Sheffield United fans buzzing about Freeman signing

[ad_pod ]Sheffield United fans on Twitter are ecstatic after their club announced the signing of Luke Freeman from QPR.

The attacking midfielder’s fee wasn’t disclosed, but it can be inferred that he cost the Blades at least more than £4mÂafter it was announced as a club-record signing.

The former QPR man was also linked with Leeds United during this transfer window, but Chris Wilder’s side have beaten out their Yorkshire rivals in the race for his signature as they gear up for life back in the Premier League.

Wilder has seemingly been after a new number 10 this summer after being linked with Everton’s Kieran Dowell, and now he has got his man.

Which Sheffield United players won’t cut it in the top-flight next season? Ingood Nick discusses in the video below…

After putting up seven goals and six assists last season it looks like he could be a great signing for the newly-promoted side and could compete with Mark Duffy for a spot behind the two strikers in the Y0rkshire outfit’s starting XI.

Understandably, United fans took to social media to share their delight about this signing.

Here’s what the Bramall Lane faithful have been saying on Twitter…

West Ham: Manuel Pellegrini must build team around Declan Rice

“I will be keeping (number) 41 for this season.” In seven words and one number, Declan Rice allowed West Ham fans to breathe a massive sigh of relief.

Rumours of the England international departing east London this summer have been rife for the past few months as Manchester United have long been interested in the 20-year-old midfielder, with the Metro going as far as to say the Red Devils were in talks with West Ham over the transfer of Rice, but with the youngster tweeting that he will be retaining his kit number for next season, it seems to have all but confirmed his status as a Hammer for another year.

Rice excelled in the West Ham XI last season, making the second most recoveries out of any player in the Premier League in the 2018/19 campaign according to Squawka and seeing his valuation on Transfermarkt jump from £9 million to £40.5 million, and with Rice now staying on at the London Stadium for another year, it is now up to Manuel Pellegrini to build the side around him.

As one of the most highly-rated youngsters in world football, it is unlikely West Ham have a player as good as Rice in their academy presently, meaning they need to keep hold of him for as long as possible.

Favouring a 4-1-4-1 formation, Rice tends to operate at the base of the midfield and rarely ventures forward unless an opposition team allows him to do so, and the England international has made a solid reputation out of himself as a good anchorman in the West Ham XI, and this can be helped with good hardworking and creative midfielders ahead of him in the centre of the park.

Pellegrini has dreams of taking West Ham to Europe in the near future via football.london, and if the Irons boss opts to build the team around Rice, then that goal could become a reality.

West Ham fans, should Pellegrini build the team around Rice? Let us know!

Liverpool fans react to Dani Ceballos links

[ad_pod ]

Despite winning the Champions League for a sixth time last month, Liverpool have been rather quiet in the summer transfer window so far.

The Reds have only signed 17-year-old Dutch centre-back Sepp van den Berg, whilst Jurgen Klopp has previously insisted the club need to make sure that they were active in the market and kept up with their rivals’ spending.

Now, Spanish publication MARCA have claimed Klopp’s side are keeping an eye on Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos and that their interest has grown in recent weeks.

The report adds the club want the 22-year-old on a permanent deal and that Klopp himself believes the Spaniard could bring an element of dynamism to their midfield.

After hearing about the links to Ceballos, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on their rumoured transfer target and many were seemingly in favour of a potential move.

Reds supporters suggested that the Madrid man would thrive under Klopp’s leadership at Anfield and threw their backing behind a summer deal.

A few however were slightly more unimpressed by the links and felt Ceballos wasn’t the calibre of player they should be targeting; instead, they urged their team to “make a statement of intent”, rather than going for someone who was deemed as not good enough by the Spanish giants.

Performance in Numbers: Dendoncker potentially under threat from Phillips if he joins Wolves

[ad_pod ]

Leander Dendoncker took a period of time to settle into life at Molineux but eventually managed to become one of the most crucial players for Wolves during the back end of last season.

A silly challenge at Wembley may have denied his team a chance of an FA Cup final but he was still recognisable as one of the key cogs in Nuno Santo’s system.

However, the addition of Kelvin Phillips, who Football Insider claim Wolves are set to ask Leeds about, may well put him under threat.

We’ve already documented the fact Romain Saiss’ place could be in danger but in the same sense, the Belgian could well be set for a slight reduction in game time.

There’s no doubting Dendoncker’s abilities but there are obvious reasons to suggest the two will end up vying for the same spot in the side.

The pair of them can play in defence whilst they also have superb qualities when it comes to playing as a holding midfielder.

Statistically, they’re quite similar, although Phillips does boast a few stats that outweigh Dendoncker’s impact on Wolves.

The stats they come closest in are tackles and interceptions.  Last season, Wolves’ current midfielder averages 2.8 successful challenges per game. On the other hand, their transfer target managed 2.6. As for interceptions, Phillips is just 0.1 ahead of Dendoncker.

In terms of the number of times each player gets dribbled past, the Leeds man is better. This specific statistic could be a determining factor in who plays if he does join the Midlands club over the summer.

Is it unrealistic to expect another top half finish from Wolves next season? HRH discusses in the video below…

The 23-year-old was dribbled past on 1.2 occasions but Dendoncker’s figure stands at 1.6. As for the number of long balls played, the latter is streets behind Philips.

Long balls forward are quite a key part of Wolves’ game if you consider the stats. Midfielders Ruben Neves made 6.1 whilst Joao Moutinho made 3.3. The man in danger of being dislodged however played only 0.8 on average.

It would be wrong to suggest that Phillips could completely take his place, but there are definitely signs to suggest that he could fill in for the Belgian international when necessary.

Major mistakes: Manchester United

It is safe to say that this has become a season to forget for Manchester United fans, with a sixth-place finish and a lot of problems being unearthed as each day comes, this club now needs the biggest re-build of its life.

Picking favourites? Playing who you trust over current form? Buying the wrong players? There are so many things that you can pick out of this current Manchester United that has led to what can only be described as a dismal campaign.

With a huge summer ahead we look towards a couple of major mistakes that has led to the return of the grey cloud that looms over Old Trafford.

Allowing good players to run down their contract

It goes without saying, if you want to be successful, you HAVE to have good foundations within the dressing room. With the departure of Ander Herrera this summer and other players like David de Gea entering their final contracted year, it seems that Manchester United didn’t get the memo.

Allowing player’s contracts to run down just creates a lot of uncertainty around the club and within the player’s mind. It is clear to see that this has happened to de Gea towards the end of this season, especially with rotation players like Phil Jones signing a new deal.

Appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the end of the season

The message was clear with the departure of Jose Mourinho, Manchester United will wait until the end of the season and make the right appointment for forward development, that lasted long…

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as an interim, we saw a side to United that we haven’t seen since the good old days of Sir Alex Ferguson. However, since the board went back on their word and gave the Norwegian the job full-time, it’s plain easy to see that multiple players became comfortable. Although Ole may have been given the job at the end of season anyway, the board’s decision to make it public early may have just been the start of their demise.

The Chalkboard: Palace targeting Lookman could be last throw of dice to keep Zaha

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace are targeting a summer move for Everton winger Ademola Lookman according to The Daily Mail, and it could prove to be a last tactical throw of the dice by the club to try and keep the want-away Wilfried Zaha at Selhurst Park.

On the chalkboard

The Eagles look set to face an uphill task to convince the Ivory Coast international to stay in south London over the next few months as he eyes Champions League football.

The 26-year-old ended the 2018/19 campaign with 10 goals and 10 assists in 34 Premier League appearances, mainly playing either from the left wing or as a striker.

Zaha featured as a centre-forward when Christian Benteke was injured and Jordan Ayew out of form, and it would certainly be an interesting to see him play in that position for a whole campaign to discover how many goals he would get.

Signing Lookman would allow that to happen

If Palace manage to pull off a deal for the out-of-favour Toffees winger, he would likely come straight into the starting XI under Roy Hodgson.

Should Crystal Palace keep hold of Max Meyer this summer? Harvey Jones discusses in the video below…

The 5 ft 9 former Charlton youngster has tended to feature from the left during his career to date, which would suggest that it would be him and Andros Townsend on either flank.

Having Lookman available would then allow the former England manager to hand Zaha a consistent striker’s role, and testing and establishing himself in that position would surely be something that would interest the attacker given he has all of the attributes to be a success there.

Should he join Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool or any Champions League outfit, it seems pretty certain that he would be used out wide, if he can get in the team on a regular basis at all.

It may well be a final ploy to keep the 26-year-old at Selhurst Park, but anything is worth a go to try and keep an individual who is so vitally important to Palace.

Even if they sign Lookman and don’t keep Zaha, at least they have a player who fits in perfectly to their effective style of play.

The Verdict: Should Spurs spend big money on reported target Tanguy Ndombele?

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a potential swoop for Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele by AS, via Sport Witness.

The 22-year-old has emerged as a genuinely elite midfielder in Ligue 1 and has already played at the very highest level, featuring in all of the club’s Champions League games this campaign.

Indeed, he has played 91 times for the club in all competitions, while also winning four caps for world champions France.

Lyon have reportedly slapped a €100million (£86m) price-tag on his head, although that fee could come down to €70-80 million.

Either way it would take a staggering figure to prise him away from the Ligue 1 outfit.

Would it be worth it for Spurs as they look to reinforce their midfield? Football FanCast writers give their verdicts…

Jack Saville

“Ndombele could be Spurs’ best central midfielder since Modric. Yes, he’s that good. They are two different types of players but his excellent blend of technical prowess, defensive solidity and physical power would make Spurs the envy of the Premier League if they pulled off a major coup. It’s unlikely Levy would be tempted at £86 million but, in today’s climate, you’d have to say that he’s worth a figure in that ballpark.”

Matt Dawson

“For me, Ndombele would be the missing piece of the Spurs jigsaw. It’s clear the impact Moussa Dembele had on the team but since his departure, I don’t think Tottenham have really been able to settle on a consistent midfield. Ndombele would help solve this issue and also severely boost any hopes Spurs have of challenging for a title. There aren’t too many areas they need to improve on, and as such, the reported price tag shouldn’t be a concern at all. Pochettino must do everything he can to bring him to London.”

Luke Glanville

“We can clearly see that there are some areas in the Tottenham team that need to be strengthened. The departure of Moussa Dembele really hurt Spurs and as a result, the central midfield is one of them. However, blowing £86.1 million on Tanguy Ndombele would be absolute madness from Daniel Levy. The Lilywhites must look to fill that position from within and luckily, they have two players coming through the academy in Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp, who can help to do that. Mauricio Pochettino and those that help him with recruitment must realise this.”
