Real Madrid fans take to Twitter to celebrate Gareth Bale’s anniversary at the club

Six years ago, Gareth Bale joined Real Madrid in a move worth £85.3m.

Since then, the speedy Welshman has played a total of 234 matches for Los Blancos, scoring 104 goals and winning an incredible 14 titles in the process.

But despite his obvious success, his life at the Spanish capital was never truly easy because of his injury woes. Just last season, he sustained five different injuries that sidelined him for nine games in total.

And that was pretty much the continuation of a familiar trend that has persisted throughout the years.

But now it seems that Bale is slowly but surely recapturing the hearts of Real Madrid fans. Just weeks ago, he was one step away from being sold but all of that is seemingly behind him now.

In his latest performance against Villarreal, Bale netted a brace and he also tallied an assist in their league opener a couple of weeks prior to that.

His fine start to the season seems to have induced some affection from a group of supporters who haven’t always warmed to the former Premier League star.

Below, you can see a collection of tweets that show what the fans had to say to Bale after he reached another anniversary at the club.

And it’s fair to say they were full of love for the wing wizard…

Tottenham fans fuming as Erik Lamela misses out on Argentina squad

[ad_pod ]

Having arrived from AS Roma in the summer of 2013, Erik Lamela has had an inconsistent career at Tottenham. The 27-year-old has found himself in and out of the side in recent seasons, struggling to nail down a first-team spot on a regular basis.

However, following the absences of Dele Alli and Son Heung-min in the opening weeks of the season, Lamela has featured from the off against Aston Villa and Manchester City.

After an uneventful display against Dean Smith’s side, the attacker came back to form with a fine strike against the Premier League champions at the Etihad on Saturday. He then provided the second goal with a delicious corner kick.

However, his goal-scoring performance was deemed not quite enough for him to earn a call-up to the Argentina national squad for the upcoming international break.

Following confirmation of Lamela’s snub, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the decision.

Many supporters of the north London side revealed their shock at seeing the Argentine miss out, and labelled it a mistake on the national team’s part.

Some however opted to take a more positive outlook on things, and suggested Lamela could now remain at Tottenham “fit and healthy”.

Premier League Transfer Roundup: Tierney bid rejected, Spurs bid for Zaniolo, Reds eye Coutinho

[ad_pod ]

Friday’s Premier League transfer roundup brought you an enquiry made for Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, West Ham’s offer for Sebastien Haller and Manchester United’s prepared bid for Yusuf Yazici. Today’s edition includes Arsenal’s rejected attempt to bring in a Celtic full-back, Tottenham’s offer for a Serie A youngster and Liverpool’s eyes on a former Anfield star.

Arsenal’s Tierney bid rejected

Unai Emery has a relatively slim budget to work with this summer at the Emirates Stadium, so you can forgive him for attempting to stretch it as far as possible. However, other clubs who are having their players targeted are unlikely to be so understanding. That is the case with Celtic, who have rejected a bid from the Gunners for left-back Kieran Tierney. The London outfit offered £25m for the 22-year-old, but that was not good enough for the Scottish Premier League champions. For them, Arsenal wanted to pay too much of the sum in add-ons, with the Bhoys instead looking to receive a bigger portion upfront.

Tottenham make Zaniolo offer

Tottenham have already done some good business this summer, with both Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele having joined. And they aren’t about to stop there, it seems. According to journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Lilywhites have made an offer to AS Roma for their 20-year-old playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have lodged a bid of €27m (£24.3m), with Toby Alderweireld also included the deal. That will bring the overall package to €50m (£45m). With the former Southampton defender already being a target for the Giallorossi, it may be enough to convince the Serie A club to part with the Italian international.

Liverpool eye Coutinho return

Philippe Coutinho signed for FC Barcelona for a huge in January of last year after having impressed during his time in the Premier League. However, since then, things have not gone his way. He may even be on the move this summer, and a return to his former club is a possibility. According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, the Reds have made a bid for the Brazilian. Jurgen Klopp and co are looking to take him on an initial two-year loan, with a purchase option of £88m. The 27-year-old has also agreed to the Merseyside’s club’s proposal.

Everton fans react to interest in Borja Iglesias

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Everton fans have been weighing in on the links to Borja Iglesias, who is apparently the subject of long-term interest from the Toffees.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Everton have been eyeing a move for the Spanish striker since January.

The report states that the 26 year-old is still on holiday but his future will be decided when he returns next week, and any deal for him would have to reach at least €28m (£25m).

It also states that he is good friends with former teammate Roberto, who just joined West Ham, and would be interested in following him to the Premier League.

Plenty of Everton fans have been weighing in on the links, and while some are impressed by his tally of 17 La Liga goals last season and are happy to trust Marcel Brands, most simply see him as another Sandro Ramirez.

Sandro joined in 2017 after an impressive season in Spain, only to flop horrendously at Goodison.

Arsenal transfer target: Dennis Praet vs Henrikh Mkhitaryan

[ad_pod ]Arsenal were on the brink of a very strong first season under Unai Emery, but it all came crashing down as the Gunners failed to beat one of just Brighton, Leicester, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Everton and Chelsea to secure Champions League football. The calamitous end to the campaign means the Gunners will contest Europa League football once again next season, and missing out on the Champions League qualification money will greatly affect Arsenal’s spending power this summer.Emery has worked on a Europa League budget before, managing to divide the cash on the likes of Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Sokratis last summer. This year is perhaps different though. The Spanish boss’ arrival raised a whole host of questions about style of play, recruitment policy and ambitions of the club, but what it also did was separate those players who simply weren’t good from those who struggled for form in the previous regime. The past ten months, or at least certainly the past two, will certainly have helped fans to understand exactly who can be trusted to deliver consistently for the manager and who cannot.Â

Arsenal are reportedly keen too secure the signature of Dennis Praet this summer, after Tuttosport also reported that Arsenal are looking to sign attacking midfielder back in April.

The potential signing of Praet in particular raises a lot of questions: Is he a like-for-like replacement for Aaron Ramsey? Is this the end of Mesut Ozil? But forget the other two. Ramsey lacks Ozil’s creativity and Ozil lack’s Ramsey’s tenacity.

The player who’s the most complete package, though, namely Henrikh Mkhitaryan, has struggled to find his best form at Arsenal.

Given the stylistic similarities between the Armenian and the Sampdoria ace, it’s intriguing to see how they compare statistically.Â

At first viewing the graphic above may paint Mkhitaryan out to be the more efficient option. His goal scoring and assisting statistics are better than Praet’s, and the Armenian has bags of experience to compliment his talent as well.

He’s played under the likes of Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, Jose Mourinho at Manchester United and is now enjoying the final years of his peak performance age at the Emirates stadium, so considering it costs nothing to keep a player, why would the Gunners possibly be targeting Sampdoria’s Belgian playmaker?

Mkhitaryan certainly has the ability to score a goal out of nothing and to find a player with a neat and incisive pass, and this is all shown in his contribution of 29 key passes. However, it’s in a different area of his game that Praet shines above his Armenian counter-part.

When it comes to contributing in the attacking phase, Sampdoria’s playmaker isn’t far off the Arsenal man, and has even made more key passes than the Gunner with 37 to his name last season. However, in the defensive side of things, Praet really starts to pull away.

The Belgian has registered 63 tackles, 35 more than the Armenian’s 28, and has completed 37 dribbles compared to 20.

The stats can allude to two separate things: firstly that Emery is looking for a midfielder who can not only be creative in the final third, but who is willing to contribute heavily to the defensive side of the game. Emery is renowned for encouraging a high press, high intensity brand of football, shown often in his use of Ramsey in big games, and Praet looks equipped to fill the void left by the Welshman.

Secondly, Mkhitaryan’s strength is not only in his talent and intelligence on the ball, but more so for his versatility. He’s played everywhere across the midfield during his career, and Praet possesses this similar trait.

His ability to not only pick out a killer pass, but also to carry the ball up the pitch himself, means he can be deployed in different roles and different formations, which will suit Emery’s tinkering management style.

If the Spaniard wants to adopt a 4-2-3-1, Praet can play as the playmaker and pull everything together in a free role. However, against bigger teams Emery may want to use him out wide so that he can pack the midfield with more robust, naturally defensive options.

Praet gives the Arsenal boss the flexibility to tweak formations and to adapt more seamlessly to differing opposition, which will allow for more consistency in line-ups, something Emery’s not been able to enjoy at Arsenal so far.

Celtic: Holding onto Nir Bitton is a smart bit of work from Lennon

According to Football Insider, new boss Neil Lennon has sanctioned the decision to allow Nir Bitton to remain at Celtic for another season after lobbying the club not to let him go this summer.

A Celtic source told Football Insider the club hierarchy had actually discussed the possibility of terminating Bitton’s deal and paying him off, but Lennon – the man who signed him from FC Ashdod back in 2013 – wants him to see out the final year of his contract.

On the face of things, it may come as a surprise to some that Lennon is so keen on keeping hold of the midfielder, 27, who only managed 10 appearances for the treble winners in the recently-completed campaign due to a knee injury which saw him out of action for 346 days, as per Transfermarkt.

However, we can’t help but think this decision makes sense. The Israeli may have been fairly anonymous this term, but he has made 181 appearances for the Parkhead giants since joining all those years ago and has been a valuable squad player – if anything – during the club’s dominance of Scottish football, which has recently seen them lift the treble treble with a victory over Hearts.

Lennon apparently considers Bitton an asset due to his experience and versatility which enables him to play in midfield or in central defence, a trait which belongs to so few in the current line-up other than perhaps Kristoffer Ajer. Indeed, Scott Brown will be another year older and Dedryck Boyata has already departed, so there are obvious holes in the squad, with the 27-year-old at least an in-house solution ready to go.

Although it’s not hard to imagine Celtic being favourites for the title next season, it wouldn’t hurt to have that extra bit of security in midfield to ensure a fairly straightforward journey to glory, especially from a man who has already helped himself to six titles, three Scottish Cups and three more Scottish League Cups.

Celtic fans, are you happy with Bitton sticking around? What role do you think he will play next season? Let us know in the comments below…

Blessing in disguise: Liverpool fans see the bright side of Naby Keita’s injury

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have taken the positives from the latest significant injury news coming out of the club, after it was revealed that Naby Keita would miss the Africa Cup of Nations with an injury that will rule him out for eight weeks.

The Guinean had to be withdrawn early on in the Champions League semi-final tie against Barcelona on Wednesday after appearing to hurt his groin following a challenge from Ivan Rakitic, and it now seems a lot more serious than it originally looked.

Does your club have a legend who is criminally overrated? Fans answer this tough question in the video below…

Jurgen Klopp described the injury as ‘very serious’, and you would expect that a number of Liverpool fans would have been upset with the news that their in-form midfielder, who has scored three goals in his last six games, will miss the business end to the campaign.

However, the Reds supporters on Twitter are finding the positives of the situation, and are looking forward to having a fully fit Keita raring to go after getting an uninterrupted pre-season under his belt…

The Chalkboard: Alli out of his depth in glorious Spurs win

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur squeezed past Manchester City and into the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday evening.

Spurs, having won 1-0 at home, progressed on away goals after a 4-3 loss at the Etihad Stadium on the night, but they may have concerns over the performance of Dele Alli.

On the chalkboard

A number of Spurs players played out of their skins on the evening but an enforced substitution by Mauricio Pochettino almost saw the club throw it away.

Moussa Sissoko sustained an injury in the first half, remarkably with the score at 3-2 to City.

Fernando Llorente was introduced in the Frenchman’s place, with Alli dropping into a deeper role.

With Llorente up front, Spurs’ attacking threat was limited, and although the Spaniard did score the goal that ultimately sent the club into the last four it was from a set piece, which doesn’t exactly display a fluid attacking system.

Alli, in particular, appeared out of his depth in midfield.

He touched the ball 54 times in total, per WhoScored, and barring a clever through ball in the build-up to Son Heung-Min’s first goal, he did not have any great impact on the game in midfield.

His pass completion rate of 77% was not particularly egregious but he was dispossessed three times, allowing City to reclaim the ball and keep it circulating, only increasing the pressure on the Spurs back four.

Alli did not have a shot on goal. Nor did he complete a dribble, though he attempted two. He was dribbled past twice and he both failed to win an aerial duel and make a tackle.

In a helter-skelter game, Alli simply could not keep up.

Out of position

Alli is not really to blame for his quiet performance. A hybrid midfielder and forward, the England international can unlock defences, score goals and win tackles.

At Spurs, he has scored 53 goals and laid on 46 assists in 176 appearances. That is a contribution to 99 goals – more than one every other game.

He is not, under any circumstances, a defensive midfielder.

That he was asked to play there is not an indictment on manager Mauricio Pochettino. Instead, it serves as an indictment on the club’s squad depth and their transfer strategy.

Alli, at the end of the day, is more a supporting striker than a deep-lying playmaker and he will hope to play there more regularly as the season progresses. Otherwise, there isn’t much point in him being on the pitch at all, as his display against City proved.
