Villa fans react to Dean Smith comments

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is hoping for a ‘response’ when his side take on West Ham on Sunday afternoon, and a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to his comments on social media.

Villa go into the meeting with David Moyes’ side off the back of three consecutive Premier League defeats, leaving them 15th in the table despite spending almost £90m in the summer transfer window.

The most recent loss came at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal, where Villa found themselves 2-0 down at half-time. They managed to draw the second half 1-1, with Smith labelling that as a ‘response’, but a number of fans aren’t exactly thrilled by that statement.

He now wants to see a further ‘response’ against the Irons, with a win taking them up at least three positions in the table.

Villa fans react

Here is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply to the club’s official post citing Smith’s pre-match comments, with plenty left unimpressed by those words amid a worrying run of form which has seen the 50-year-old come under pressure in some quarters.

England seek to maintain momentum

After wrapping up the Test series 2-0, England now switch their focus to the one-day contests against West Indies

However, before thoughts can seriously turn to Australia, there is a busy period of limited-overs action, beginning with this three-match series against West Indies. After the win at Chester-le-Street, Andrew Strauss said that it was important England focussed on their one-day cricket and not think too far ahead. They came back to steal the series in the Caribbean 3-2 with Andrew Flintoff taking a hat-trick in the final match, but yet again Flintoff is injured and on the sidelines. So too is Kevin Pietersen, who has been withdrawn with an Achilles injury, leaving the door open for a possible debut for Eoin MorganWest Indies are always a dangerous one-day team with a batting line-up packed with explosive hitters, none more so than their captain, Chris Gayle, who found top gear in the second innings at Durham with 54 off 43 balls. He might not have much time for Test cricket, but the one-day variety is much more up his street. Dwayne Bravo’s return to the squad adds depth with bat and ball, so although England have been comfortably superior in recent weeks that might change in the coming days.Form guideEngland WWLLW
West Indies LLWWLWatch out for…Ravi Bopara has solved England’s Test No. 3 position for the foreseeable future and now he needs to cement his position at the top of the one-day order. He was promoted to open in India and retained the role in West Indies with a modicum of success, but England are still searching for the ideal combination. His approach is refreshingly simple – “you just attack more balls in one-day cricket” – and with his confidence riding high this is Bopara’s chance to make another position his own.How West Indies could have done with Dwayne Bravo during the Test series, but he was controversially omitted after medical advice said his ankle hadn’t recovered sufficiently. He has spent the last six weeks batting, bowling and diving around at the IPL and his return brings so much to the tourists’ side. Jota must start for Liverpool against Man U

After convincingly beating Watford 5-0 in their previous Premier League outing followed by a 3-2 Champions League win away at Atletico Madrid in midweek, Liverpool have a big game on their hands with Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, who are currently four points behind the Reds in the league table.

Jota should start

In terms of who Reds manager Jurgen Klopp could include in his starting XI this afternoon, we feel that Diogo Jota should definitely be in it.

Liverpool signed the Portugal forward in September 2020 from fellow Premier League club Wolves in a deal worth a reported £41m.

In his debut season with the Merseyside club, the 24-year-old – who is currently valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt – netted 13 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.

So far this season, Jota – who has previously been described as a “monster” by Liverpool’s assistant manager Pep Lijnders – has scored three goals in seven Premier League appearances.

Furthermore, he has averaged 2.6 shots and 1.6 key passes per game, showing how much of an attacking threat he has been for the Reds in the Premier League. That illustrates how he could be a terrifying prospect for United’s defenders to face on Sunday.

Even though he didn’t start in midweek against Atletico, Jota came on as a second half substitute, replacing Sadio Mane just after the hour mark. He managed to win Liverpool’s penalty, won three out of his five duels and ultimately earned himself an overall match rating of 7/10, higher than most Liverpool players who started the match according to SofaScore.

In terms of who he could replace in the starting XI tody, we feel that Jota could slot in the team ahead of Roberto Firmino, who failed to impress against Atletico as he didn’t register even one shot on target.

Whether or not Klopp chooses to start Jota, the Reds will definitely be aiming to secure all three points to keep them towards the top of the league table, especially considering how Chelsea recorded a resounding 7-0 win over Norwich City yesterday.

Rajasthan push for semi-final berth

Beat Delhi and follow up with another victory in their final league game against Kolkata and Rajasthan are through to the semis; lose, and the race shifts to net run-rate, how the other top teams fare, and plenty of crossed fingers

Big PictureYusuf Pathan will need to repeat his heroics from the last time these two teams squared off this year•AFPRajasthan Royals are placed fourth on the points table, but with only two more games to play, they still haven’t cemented their place in the semi-finals. The simplest permutation would be to win this game and the next, to save relying on the outcomes of other fixtures and net run-rate alternatives. Beat Delhi Daredevils and follow up with another victory in their final league game against the Kolkata Knight Riders and they’re through; lose, and the race for that semi-final spot shifts to net run-rates, how the other top teams fare, and plenty of crossed fingers. Considering their opponents have been virtually unstoppable, Rajasthan will need to bring their A-game to the OUTsurance Oval.Virender Sehwag may still be smarting from the defeat suffered at Centurion in the second week of the tournament where his batsmen were tied down and the bowlers failed to go for the jugular when Rajasthan were faltering. That loss snapped Delhi’s winning run at three but now, barring a sweeping drop in form, they are pretty much safe for the semi-finals.The two teams have had interesting journeys so far: Delhi began in style, winning three in a row, then lost one, won the next, lost again, only to take four on the trot before slipping up against Kings XI Punjab. Rajasthan started poorly, but despite a revival, haven’t been able to stitch together a run of victories like the six they managed in 2008. They won three in a row but then dropped two, coming back with an electric last-over success in their last game. Rajasthan haven’t been as strong as last season and need to get the right combination. What they can do for starters is analyse win against Delhi at Centurion, one in which three central figures combined to script perhaps the most amazing turnaround of this tournament.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Delhi Daredevils: LWWWW
That Delhi have done so well despite Sehwag flopping and missing four games through injury, and Gautam Gambhir having an average tournament, is down to the roles performed by a few clutch players. Delhi have won most of their tight matches and each time someone has stood up to be counted for – Dirk Nannes with his pace and swing, Ashish Nehra with his accurate bowling at the death, and AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan with the bat. In 2008, Delhi suffered because of their middle-order blues but Dilshan and de Villiers have been stand-out figures.Rajasthan Royals: WLLWW
In the absence of two spearheads, Shane Watson and Sohail Tanvir, the relative disappointment of Graeme Smith, and injuries and chucking concerns, Rajasthan have still impressed to stay in the top four. Chalk that down to Shane Warne the captain and Yusuf Pathan the batsman. Yusuf’s bat has featured in almost all their wins, and Warne employing his accurate spin at the start of an innings has proved successful. Rajasthan have won four tight games, indicative that old man Warne’s genius has enthused yet another rag-tag bunch.Watch out forYusuf Pathan: His last big contribution with the bat was a rollicking unbeaten half-century against Delhi on April 28, and Rajasthan need him to produce an encore. On that occasion Rajasthan were 65 for 5 and needing 80 off nine overs when he walked in. Yusuf’s brute strength sealed a remarkable five-wicket win.Virender Sehwag: Delhi’s most destructive batsman – nay, the world’s – has been a phantom of himself in South Africa. Sehwag has yet to cross 38 in this tournament – and seven innings have added up to only 107 runs. Not once have the bowlers earned his wicket; each dismissal has been down to poor, ill-conceived shot-making. Sehwag is one batsman who needs time at the crease before the semi-finals. It is time to deliver.TeamsDelhi dropped the Australian opener David Warner for the last game, and brought in Sri Lankan allrounder Farveez Maharoof. Maharoof flopped with the bat, bowled off the last ball of a Brett Lee wicket-maiden over at the end of Delhi’s innings, and served up too many no-balls even though he took two wickets. They may want to try out Warner again in the hope that he, Sehwag and Gambhir all fire. Pradeep Sangwan had a miserable last game, so there could be a recall for Avishkar Salvi or Dirk Nannes, who could also take Maharoof’s place.Delhi Daredevils : (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag (capt), 3 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Mithun Manhas, 7 Farveez Maharoof, 8 Rajat Bhatia, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Pradeep Sangwan/Avishkar Salvi, 11 Ashish Nehra.Rob Quiney’s spirited half-century as opener means he will stay on, though doubts linger on Johan Botha, who jumped into the game right after being allowed to resume bowling. He didn’t get a wicket, which puts his place under pressure from the likes of Tyron Henderson. Siddharth Chitnis, a bowler, didn’t turn his arm over and failed when promoted to No. 5 so he’s unlikely to get another look-in. Swapnil Asnodkar could take his place.Rajasthan Royals: (probable): 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Rob Quiney, 3 Swapnil Asnodkar, 4 Yusuf Pathan, 5 Ravindra Jadeja, 6 Naman Ojha (wk), 7 Johan Botha/Tyron Henderson, 8 Abhishek Raut, 9 Shane Warne (capt), 10 Siddharth Trivedi, 11 Munaf Patel.Stats and triviaSehwag, despite playing only seven innings and failing to ignite, has the highest strike-rate for Delhi – 152.85.Nehra is joint second on this season’s highest wicket-takers tally with 16 at 17.43.The opening stand of 135 between Smith and Naman Ojha is the best of the tournament.Rajasthan are the only team to cross 200 in 2009. Their 211 for 4 is the best score this season. Head-to-head recordDelhi and Rajasthan played each other thrice last season. Delhi won the first encounter easily by nine wickets, but lost the next two. Rajasthan clinched a home victory by three wickets in the second league game before winning the semi-final by a whopping 105 runs in Mumbai. In their previous match this season a brutal innings from Yusuf, a more sedate but no less important knock by Smith and another typically inspired tactical tweak from Warne downed Delhi.

Sunderland fans slam Pritchard

Flocking to Twitter, many Sunderland fans were less than impressed with midfielder Alex Pritchard following his display as The Black Cats ran out 2-1 winners against Lincoln City on Tuesday evening.

Lee Johnson’s side, looking to respond after Saturday’s disappointing 4-0 away defeat to Portsmouth, began their defence of the Papa John’s Trophy in perfect fashion.

February’s semi-final of the same competition last season saw Sunderland beat Lincoln in a penalty shoot out to send them to the final – ultimately going on to win the trophy.

On Tuesday evening, they continued their recent run of form against The Imps with a 2-1 away victory – kicking off Group F with all three points.

Goals in either half from Daniel Neill and Stephen Wearne put Johnson’s men in cruise control before Lewis Montsma grabbed a late consolation strike in added time.

After what was a solid away performance, one man who certainly didn’t attract many plaudits was midfielder Pritchard as supporters pointed out his lacklustre display.

Losing possession 17 times on the night, the 28-year-old also didn’t manage any shots on target or successful completed dribbles (SofaScore) – leaving little wonder why many fans weren’t impressed.

No ano passado joguei assim no Atlético Nacional e me dei muito bem. Cuca conversa muito comigo, me dá toda a confiança.

Leeds had £13m Lewis O’Brien bid rejected

Leeds United had a £13million bid for Lewis O’Brien rejected in the summer, according to Huddersfield Town chairman Phil Hodgkinson.

The Lowdown: Leeds constantly linked with move

The Whites ended up having a productive summer, bringing in the likes of Junior Firpo and Daniel James, but they failed to find a quality midfielder who can allow players like Kalvin Phillips to rest and rotate.

Leeds were continually linked with a move for Huddersfield’s O’Brien, but he ended up staying put at the Championship club.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Chairman makes big claim

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Hodgkinson has claimed that the Whites bid as much as £13million for O’Brien.

You couldn’t get a much closer source than the Terriers’ chairman himself, delivering a nine-word verdict and confirming that Huddersfield rejected the approach:

“The fourth offer we rejected was for thirteen million.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-15/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Overpriced?

While O’Brien is a young player who has shone in the Championship, winning Huddersfield’s Player of the Year award in 2019/20, £13million seems a lot of money to spend on a player who will ultimately be arriving as back-up, rather than a first XI option.

The 22-year-old remains unproven at the top level and he would likely have come in as a squad player, providing opportunities to rest Phillips now that the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ is featuring regularly through international breaks.

It may be that Leeds come back in for O’Brien in the January transfer window or next summer, but there is a feeling that he could be overpriced if they are willing to spend that amount again.

Liverpool fans call for Origi to leave

A number of Liverpool supporters have urged Fenerbahce to sign Divock Origi, following an update regarding the striker’s Reds future.

The Belgian’s Anfield career has been one of the more curious ones of the Jurgen Klopp era.

Origi has undoubtedly contributed to Liverpool’s success, famously scoring in the 2019 Champions League final win over Tottenham, not to mention bagging a brace in the incredible semi-final victory against Barcelona.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

There have been other big moments, too – the dramatic late winner at home to Everton in 2018/19 stands out – but the 26-year-old has become an increasingly ineffective player for the Reds.

For that reason, Origi could still leave this summer, with Fotospor [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] claiming that Fenerhahce want to sign him before the September 8th transfer cutoff in Turkey.
