Man City player ratings vs Leicester

Manchester City took another huge step towards the title with an impressive 2-0 win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, here are our player ratings from the game.

Starting XI

Ederson: 7/10

Saved comfortably from Youri Tielemans early in the second half after being a spectator for the first 45. A late strike from James Maddison was fortunately straight at the Brazilian, who earns a 7/10 simply because his clean sheet earns me fantasy points.

Kyle Walker: 6/10

After a quiet first-half, Walker was key in City’s opening goal as his dangerous cross into the box caused chaos and allowed Mendy to find the net. Looked solid at the back and defended well when Castagne pushed forward for the home side.

Ruben Dias: 7/10

After a very comfortable first half, the centre-back burst into action with a superb block to deny Tielemans what looked to be a certain goal. Had very little else to do but that block proved vital considering it was 0-0 at the time.

Aymeric Laporte: 6/10

Defended a rare Leicester break brilliantly by running across Kelechi Iheanacho and earning a foul after the former City man pulled him back but had very little to do overall.

Benjamin Mendy: 7/10

Guilty of not getting forward enough in the first half but was in the right place at the right time to open the scoring, showing great composure to cut inside Timothy Castange and find the bottom corner with his weaker foot. Had very little to do from a defensive perspective.

Fernandinho: 7/10

Unfortunate to have a great early strike chalked off after an Aguero offside. Played with his usual quality and gave Leicester’s midfielders very little time on the ball. Regularly won back possession to kick start attacks. Picked up a late booking after unnecessarily kicking James Maddison.

Rodri: 6/10

Broke up play well as usual and largely went unnoticed as you would hope from a defensive midfielder but was arguably outperformed by Fernandinho in the middle. Picked up a late booking for a foul on Tielemans that was very much in the mould of Fernandinho.

Kevin De Bruyne: 8/10

The Belgian was inches away from opening the scoring after striking the crossbar from an excellent free-kick. Largely ran the show in the first half and created the second goal with an inch-perfect pass through to Gabriel Jesus. Played in Mahrez perfectly but the Algerian curled it wide when he should have scored. Withdrawn after getting frustrated after some late Leicester tackles but still a superb display from the world-class midfielder.

Riyad Mahrez: 5/10

Hit straight at Kasper Schmeichel in City’s best chance of the first half when he should’ve scored. The £37.8m-rated dynamo later missed another sitter when played through by De Bruyne before being replaced by Torres with around 15 minutes remaining.

Gabriel Jesus: 7/10

Was played in beautifully by Riyad Mahrez but couldn’t cut the ball back to his strike partner Aguero. Later repaid the favour by providing a delightful flick for his Algerian teammate. Hit narrowly over after De Bruyne found him in the box shortly before half time. Got the goal his performance deserved after sliding home from Sterling’s cut back.

Sergio Aguero: 6/10

You can’t blame the Argentinian too much for being offside for Fernandinho’s goal but a volley that was blazed over the bar by the striker highlighted his rustiness and was perhaps one that you would have expected him to take a few seasons ago. Replaced by Raheem Sterling just after the hour mark, hopefully, the run-out will do his fitness some good as he looked far from his best again here.

Subs

Raheem Sterling: 7/10

Perhaps guilty of not pulling the trigger quick enough when found in the box by Jesus but then regained his composure to give the ball back to the Brazilian for a tap in to make it 2-0.

Ferran Torres: 6/10

Barely touched the ball as City saw out the game late on.

Phil Foden: N/A

Gers fans rage at Scottish Cup change

Glasgow Rangers fans are far from happy after their Scottish Cup fourth round clash this weekend was moved from Saturday to Sunday.

With the Premiership already sewn up for the Gers, Steven Gerrard’s men can now concentrate on the Cup as they go in search of a domestic double. This weekend, they face Celtic in what is likely to be their most demanding test in the competition – if they progress, they will be confident of lifting the trophy at Hampden Park.

The match was set to be played on Saturday at 3 pm, but due to the funeral of His Royal Majesty Prince Phillip, the match will now be played on Sunday at the same time. While Rangers are generally staunch supporters of the monarchy (The Athletic), many are frustrated the match has been moved a whole 24 hours rather than just played at a later time on the same day.

The news was shared on Twitter by Rangers’ official account, and the fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the Rangers fans had to say below

Ele vai me ajudar bastante.

Tottenham suffer Lo Celso injury blow

According to a report from The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a further injury blow as news emerges on Giovani Lo Celso – with the Argentine reportedly set to be out for ‘at least’ another three more weeks due to hamstring trouble.

Lo Celso injury blow emerges

Indeed, as per this update, the Spurs attacker’s comeback under manager Jose Mourinho has been delayed – coming as Tottenham also deal with the absence of Harry Kane.

While the Englishman could be back earlier than expected, with the player himself estimating a meagre two-week absence (Tottenham Hotspur official), the same cannot be said for Lo Celso, who is apparently set to be out for longer than anticipated.

The 24-year-old, who Mourinho called ‘amazing’ before his injury absence (Evening Express), especially due to his good run of form rotating in the attacking positions alongside Tanguy Ndombele, now won’t return to the pitch for an extended period of time.

Transfer Tavern take

Lo Celso will apparently miss the rest of February and there is also a ‘fear’ he could be out for even longer than that – with no date currently set on his return or even an estimate in this report.

Given Tottenham’s need for attacking quality, combined with the arguable overreliance on Ndombele, Kane and Son Heung-min, this update comes as a major blow.

Time will tell when he does return, but this update spells bad news for the immediate future of Spurs’ attacking play.

Arsenal could sign a Mesut Ozil upgrade in Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt

According to Sport BILD journalist Christian Falk, Arsenal are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt.

What’s the story?

The Gunners have been short of creativity this season, with just 16 goals scored in their first 16 games of the new Premier League season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have improved in the last couple of games, particularly with academy starlet Emile Smith Rowe playing in that all-important number ten role.

But, it seems the north London side are still intent on signing an attacking midfielder, and Falk has claimed that Brandt is in their sights, and that a “transfer is already a topic in the dressing room”.

Perfect upgrade on Ozil

Whilst things haven’t quite gone to plan for Brandt this season – he’s completed the full 90 minutes just twice in the Bundesliga – there’s no doubting the kind of talent the Germany international possesses.

His former coach at Dortmund, Lucien Favre, said: “He can play different positions in different systems, on the wings, between the lines, in a midfield two or three, even as a striker. He offers many solutions for a coach. That’s his great quality, that’s his strength.”

That versatility sets him apart from Ozil, who whilst he could potentially play off the right, is at his best in that number ten role. Brandt can play on either flank, and with Arteta showing he is a tactically astute manager, the 24-year-old’s ability to adapt to different systems and demands seems tailor made for the Gunners right now.

In August 2017, he became the youngest Bayer Leverkusen player to rack up 100 Bundesliga appearances, and has already got plenty of Champions League experience with Dortmund too.

If Edu can pull off a deal for the £31.5m-rated record-breaker, then Arsenal may just have found their ideal Ozil upgrade.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho must unleash Moussa Sissoko against Leeds in the Premier League

It’s a sign of just how far Moussa Sissoko has come in his time at Tottenham, that he’s established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet – outside of course the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

The France international has been a trusted lieutenant of Jose Mourinho this season, completing the full 90 minutes in ten out of the 13 Premier League matches he’s played.

Last time out against Wolves however, he was dropped to the bench – the first time that’s happened in the top-flight since the second game of the season against Southampton. But with Leeds up next on Saturday afternoon, the midfielder surely has to come back in.

Mourinho’s side could only labour to a draw against Wolves, and whilst Sissoko is hardly going to unlock opposition defences with a cute pass like a Tanguy Ndombele, his drive and energy is something that is absolutely priceless to this team.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips said: “He is a superb player – power, pace and travels with the ball really well. He can take the ball in tight situations with his strengthSissoko is a huge player for Tottenham. He reminds me of Gerrard, a little bit.”

Described as a “real dominant force” by former Spurs midfielder Michael Brown, the £80k-a-week ace looks tailor made for a contest against Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, where it’s going to be all about managing the transitions and trying to stop the Yorkshire club breaking away on dangerous counter-attacks.

Ndombele might be the man Spurs look to for a bit of creative inspiration going forward, but the return of Sissoko against an energetic and dynamic Leeds side could be the key to tilting the game in the north London outfit’s favour.

Wake up Wilson: Glasgow Rangers must reward Kai Kennedy with a new deal

Glasgow Rangers will be well aware they can’t afford to repeat the mistake they made with Billy Gilmour by letting Kai Kennedy leave his boyhood club.

Kennedy’s current contract will run out in 2021 and it’s been suggested that his time at the club could be coming to an end in the not too distant future.

However, reports in recent times have revealed that Rangers seem to have reneged on their stance as they have reopened discussions with the player’s representatives, with further talks to be held in the coming weeks and months.

What’s the story?

According to Glasgow Live, the Rangers academy product could commit his future to the club after his agent held talks with the Gers.

It’s claimed that negotiations are still ongoing after initial talks stalled earlier this year following a public spat with Steven Gerrard over his playing time. However, it remains to be seen if the two sides will be able to reach an agreement.

The 18-year-old has attracted attention from European giants AS Roma, Bayern Munich and Manchester City in recent months after breaking through into the first team as a second half substitute in the 2-0 win over Stranraer in the Scottish Cup last season. So, Gers chief Ross Wilson must act now before it’s too late, as it’s unlikely he will be short of suitors in the months ahead.

Wake up Wilson!

Without trying to rub salt in the wound, it’s safe to say that the Light Blues have been in this position before, as Pedro Caixinha tried in vain to convince Gilmour to stay at the club back in 2017. They aren’t the first club and they certainly won’t be the last to lose one of their top prospects, but losing another would paint an all-too familiar pattern.

Once hailed as a “fabulous little player” by Gerrard after some “outstanding” performances, Kennedy has made five appearances for John Robertson’s side so far this season, registering his first assist against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup, which is surely a sign of things to come. At one stage it looked like the left winger was destined for the exit after an apparent disagreement with the Ibrox boss over his lack of game time.

Contrary to some reports, it seems that their relationship isn’t beyond repair, although the talented teenager is currently plying his trade on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle after being told he could find a new club in the summer. But Gerrard may have to swallow his pride as the club cannot afford to let another talented youngster slip through their grasp.

Now it’s up to Wilson to try and convince Kennedy to sign a new and improved contract, having so far failed to agree a new deal with the winger. Admittedly, Gerrard has a number of wide options to choose from, as Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi, Brandon Barker, Jordan Jones and even Joe Aribo have all started in recent weeks before the international break.

However, Jones has hardly done himself any favours whatsoever after falling afoul of the coronavirus protocols. Indeed, the Northern Ireland international has been heavily linked with an exit in the winter transfer window. If he is sold as is expected, this would create space in the squad for another winger, which may allow Kennedy to stake his claim for a place in the starting line-up instead.

He just needs to be given the time to shine at a senior level, as he has already show flashes of his overall brilliance with two assists in seven games for the Gers’ reserves. Now Wilson must reward him with a new deal, or the club could live to regret their decision to let him go for little more than a development fee next summer in the years to come.

AND in other news, Glasgow Rangers could’ve signed Ryan Kent’s perfect replacement in Daniel Johnson…
