Back injury rules out Sreesanth for three months

Sreesanth fears he has entered the most difficult phase of his career after he was told four days ago by doctors in Sydney that a stress fracture of his lower back had ruled him out of international cricket for the next three months. The Indian fast bowler, who has not played international cricket for the last 11 months due to various injuries, has been ruled out of the IPL next month and is now almost certain to miss the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in England in June.”I have never been through anything like this in my life before,” Sreesanth said from Sydney. “It’s been a year now since I have been hit by a series of injuries and it’s just too bizarre. But I don’t want to think about anything else just now except to focus on my recovery. Tournaments come and go, and I am not going to sit in a corner and worry about missing them. All I need to focus on is to get fit again.”Sreesanth, who had established himself as one of India’s leading strike bowlers within a year of his Test debut in 2006, first suffered a left side strain during the last IPL in May 2008. Subsequently, he developed a second injury that was initially diagnosed as a “stiff back”.He was cleared to play domestic cricket in December, after undergoing a rehabilitation stint at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, and carried on till the Duleep Trophy final in February – however, he looked far from his best, unable at times to execute his full, natural action or his run-up.”It was devastating to be told that I had been carrying this injury for almost five months,” Sreesanth said. “But in a way, I am happy too that the injury has been diagnosed. There was always this niggling pain down in the back even after I was cleared to play last year. But I was told by experts in India that I was perfectly alright and was just not mentally tough enough to play again. They questioned my mental strength and commitment and even I started doubting myself. But now, I have my answer.”Sreesanth says the first step to recovery happened when he got in touch with Patrick Farhart, the physio of his IPL team (Kings XI Punjab). “He asked me to come to Sydney for assessment and then took me through an exhaustive check-up, including a bone scan and an MRI scan,” he said. “Clearly, there was a stress fracture in the lower back (L2). Now I am following Patrick’s recovery schedule.”Sreesanth now hopes that his “faith in god” and “amazing support” from friends, including Brett Lee, his IPL bowling partner, will see him through the present crisis. “Lee and Mitchell Johnson are the two guys who have come back from similar injuries and still done extremely well,” he said. “So that’s an inspiration. Brett has always been a good friend, and he has been particularly helpful here. He has worked out with me, and spoken to me a lot, mostly about keeping the faith and believing in oneself during such situations.”Sreesanth says he has been told that his international career – stuck since last April at 14 Tests and 50 wickets – hinges on how well he manages the recovery, and not how quickly he does it. “That’s why I am going to play safe now,” he said. “I am not going to rush back like I have done before and spoil it all again. But I will be back because I know my best is yet to come.”

Aston Villa wanted to sign Man Utd’s Jesse Lingard

Aston Villa made an approach for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested that Dean Smith’s side were ready to rival fellow Premier League outfit West Ham in a move for the England international.

Now, The Times have delivered an update on Lingard’s situation, name-checking Villa as one of the teams who registered their interest in luring Lingard away from Old Trafford.

The report adds that the midfielder has in fact rejected a new contract offer from United over concerns over playing time this season, and that he is ready to run down his deal unless he is given assurances by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Would be superb at Villa

Lingard’s current contract comes to an end next summer, meaning that he would be able to leave on a free transfer, and what a bargain that would be for Johan Lange and co at Villa.

After joining West Ham back in the January transfer window on a short-term loan, Lingard racked up an incredible nine goals and four assists in just his first ten Premier League games for the club – it was no surprise then that he was lauded as being “absolutely phenomenal”.

The England international’s ability to score goals from midfield is something which could add a different dimension at Villa, and it’s a knack that Michael Carrick was quick to praise back at Old Trafford.

The United coach said: “He senses where the space is and how to use it. I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s a dribbler with skills and tricks but he’s dynamic. How he plays, he is unique in some ways. You don’t see so much of that now as everyone wants to get on the ball. Off the ball, he’s very effective.”

His performances with the Hammers showcased the kind of impact the £75k-a-week earning star can have when he’s on song and the confidence is flowing through his veins.

Giving him an opportunity to shine at Villa, where the spotlight is understandably less than somewhere like United, could offer him the kind of freedom that sees him become a really consistent performer and break back into the England side under Gareth Southgate.

He’s a player the club must surely go back in for after their initial summer approach. Given that he would be available on a free once the season ends, or for a knock-down price in January, Villa could strike gold either way.

Meanwhile, new details have emerged over Villa’s summer swoop…

Clint McKay bowled Victoria to within sight of victory after their batsmen posted a huge total of 484 at the MCG. Tasmania were scrambling to stay in the match at stumps on the third day and their captain Daniel Marsh was the main obstacle in Victoria’s path, unbeaten on 69 with Luke Butterworth on 25.The pair had combined for a 60-run partnership that steadied the Tigers after they stumbled to 5 for 85. Tasmania ended the day at 5 for 145, trailing by 121, but Marsh and Butterworth at least gave them hope of survival on a final day that was likely to feature a few showers.Victoria had a first-innings lead of 266 and it looked like the game could be over in three days when Tasmania crashed to 3 for 18 with McKay having claimed all the wickets. He struck with the second ball of the innings when Rhett Lockyear was caught in the slips for 2 and followed with Travis Birt lbw and Michael Dighton caught behind.Shane Harwood and Jon Holland chipped in with a breakthrough each as the day threatened to become a disastrous one for Tasmania, who had allowed Victoria’s lower order to add 146 before lunch. The in-form Rob Quiney made his maiden first-class century earlier this season and he looked set to add a second until he top-edged an attempted hook on 88.The Tigers also had big trouble trying to remove their team-mate from last summer, Damien Wright, who was fresh from a club cricket century and finished with 84. Wright was the last man out, handing Brett Geeves his fourth wicket, but there were precious few reasons for Tasmania to celebrate for the rest of the day.

Everton: Boyland on Ndombele chances

Patrick Boyland has said that Everton’s recruitment team have ‘liked’ Tanguy Ndombele ‘before’ but is unsure whether a move for the 24-year-old is feasible.

The lowdown

The Frenchman – who has been hailed as a ‘rare talent’ by football coach and analyst Harry Brooks – has told Tottenham Hotspur that he’s open to leaving before the end of the transfer window (via The Athletic).

The midfielder has effectively been frozen out by new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, sidelined for the entirety of pre-season and all 270 minutes of competitive action so far. If he were to leave the north London outfit, his preference would apparently be a move to ‘one of the biggest clubs in Spain or Germany’.

Everton, for their part, have been assessing potential midfield signings such as Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff.

The latest

In a Q&A for The Athletic, Boyland was asked whether signing Ndombele on loan is a realistic option for the Toffees.

He replied: “Not sure. They’ve liked him before (they being the recruitment side) but he was obviously out of reach then. The reporting from London seems to suggest he’s available but that Spurs would prefer to recoup some/most of the sizeable transfer fee. Everton have looked at midfielders (Longstaff etc) but there’s not much money atm. Maybe a loan or two”.

The verdict

Considering that Ndombele’s ‘sizeable transfer fee’ was £55m and that there seems to be ‘not much money’ available at Goodison Park, Everton may well be priced out of the equation. Also, another potential stumbling block in the way of a permanent deal is the player’s £200,000-per-week wages.

A loan arrangement could perhaps see his salary divided between the clubs, and while that wouldn’t be ideal for Spurs, it would clearly be better than paying the full amount for a player who may barely feature. If no permanent offer is on the table, perhaps they would be receptive to that idea.

This would be a coup for Everton if they pull it off. Ndombele isn’t perfect but his ability to weave through opposition challenges and evade their press is very impressive, and Rafael Benitez would surely welcome those traits within his squad.

In other news, many Everton fans were left fuming over this transfer update.

Nottinghamshire sent crashing to painful defeat

Nottinghamshire’s Championship hopes were finally extinguished at 3.57pm when Charlie Shreck struck a catch to backward point and Hampshire completed a massive 203-run victory. In reality, they were over when the day started. It would have needed a miracle for Nottinghamshire after being set 442 in 76 overs and Dimitri Mascarenhas’ four top-order wickets ensured there would be no Lazarus-like revival from the home side. Durham were already on the team bus back home and now the celebrations can truly begin for them.As soon as Kent were bowled out earlier today, Nottinghamshire’s pursuit of a second title in four years was over barring an extraordinary run chase. Twelve months ago Lancashire almost pulled off a miracle against Surrey, coming up 24 runs short at The Oval, but Nottinghamshire had fewer overs to repeat them. The asking rate was 5.82 an over before they even began and they were emotionally gone, having seen the title wrestled away from them.Chris Read trudged off as the unbeaten batsman and it will take him a while to get over the last couple of weeks. Losing the deciding Pro40 match against Sussex was one thing, but seeing the Championship slip away with such a comprehensive defeat will be a bitter pill to swallow. Second place will be little consolation.”Where we really had our opportunity was on the second day with our batting,” Read said. “That to me was the way we were going to win, having elected to field first. We’d bowled them out for 200, which was fantastic, then we should have been looking at getting 350-400. We were in a reasonable position to do that, then it all fell apart.”They showed their intent by promoting Graeme Swann to open, but he lasted just 10 balls before having a wild heave at Mascarenhas and losing his leg stump. Two balls later Mark Wagh edged to second slip and, after a brief stand between Will Jefferson and Samit Patel, Jefferson drove the last ball before lunch straight to mid-off.This innings had all the makings of going into free fall. Nottinghamshire’s players probably wanted to leave as quickly as possible and forget about the last few weeks. Mascarenhas continued his one-man wicket-taking display when Ashwell Prince lobbed a return catch. Prince hasn’t produced the runs Nottinghamshire had hoped for when he joined following South Africa’s Test tour.Patel showed some resilience with a flamboyant display of striking, even if he had nothing to lose. Still, the sweetness of his striking again caught the eye, following his hundred against Surrey last week and first-innings 70 here. He is certainly finishing the season on a high, but will look back on his drive to mid-off on the second day – leading to Nottinghamshire’s collapse – as a crucial moment in this match. His fifty came off 51 balls and he’d struck 14 boundaries before being brilliantly caught by Mascarenhas, running backwards at least 30 yards from mid-on to take the ball over his shoulder. Mascarenhas covered the same distance in his celebration and Liam Dawson enjoyed his first wicket of the match. Bilal Shafayat then drove a low catch to mid-on and stood there before being given out following a consultation between the umpires. Both Shafayat and Nottinghamshire already knew their fate, though.Hampshire could have been more aggressive in setting their target, but there was lingering resentment about a match at the conclusion of the 2005 season, when Kent accepted Nottinghamshire’s one-sided offer to chase 420 in 70 overs to stay in the Championship race. It gave Dawson the chance to reach his maiden first-class century, off 153 balls, including a cover-driven six off Shreck. Hampshire were in no mood to give Nottinghamshire a sniff, and the Durham players will be the first to thank them for that.

Symonds' absence will take gloss off the tour – Kirsten

Gary Kirsten, India’s coach, has said Andrew Symonds’ possible absence from the tour of India, which begins in October, could take the gloss off the series

Gary Kirsten, India’s coach, has said Andrew Symonds’ possible absence from the tour of India, which begins in October, could take the gloss off the series. Kirsten hoped India would be able to exploit the situation if Australia have to go for a relatively inexperienced player as Symonds’ replacement.Symonds, who was sent home from Darwin ahead of the ODI series against Bangladesh after he chose to go fishing instead of attending a team meeting, was pondering his future with Australia. Coach Tim Nielsen had said the team was planning for being without the allrounder for the India tour.”We all know with the Australian set-up that they always replace those individuals with quality players, but in the heat of Test-match battle sometimes experience counts for a lot,” Kirsten told the Melbourne-based .”There is a lot of hype around him and the quality player that he is, and also I gather there is a lot of tension around from what happened in the last series.”To not have him around … does that alleviate it? Does it make it better? I don’t know the answer. One thing we must always be aware of is that the game is bigger than the individual.”

Crystal Palace suffer Lewis O’Brien blow

Crystal Palace have suffered a potentially significant blow in their pursuit of Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have been linked to the highly-rated 22-year-old in recent weeks as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to strengthen his engine room options.

O’Brien has entered the final year of his current contract at the John Smiths Stadium, although the Terriers do have the option to extend that by a further 12 months.

However, fellow Premier League side Leeds United appear to have won the race for O’Brien’s signature after agreeing a £7m fee for the player, according to The Telegraph.

Patrick Vieira will be gutted

After rising through the ranks at his boyhood club, O’Brien has established himself as one of Huddersfield’s most promising midfielders, scoring five goals and providing seven assists in 83 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit.

Vieira has already bolstered his midfield engine room options in the shape of Conor Gallagher on loan, but with James McCarthy departing and Cheikhou Kouyate linked with an imminent exit, the former Nice boss may need added reinforcements for the upcoming campaign.

However, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that O’Brien will be the man to solve the south London outfit’s conundrum in the middle of the park.

After missing the opening two matches of the Championship season due to COVID-19, the Englishman returned to action for their 1-0 victory over Preston North End on Tuesday night, putting in a solid display on his comeback.

Palace have been targeting young, exciting acquisitions in the current window, changing the landscape at Selhurst Park in the process, and O’Brien would certainly fit into the makeup of the new-look side.

Therefore, news that Leeds are closing in on his signature will surely leave Vieira feeling gutted. The capital club have also been heavily linked with a move for Watford ace Will Hughes, but reportedly saw an opening offer of £5m turned down by the Hornets.

It leaves the former Nice boss in a rather tricky situation as both of his top midfielder targets are seemingly out of his reach at this moment in time.

With just a couple of weeks remaining before the transfer window shuts, Vieira will be desperate to add the final touches to what’s been a successful summer so far.

And, in other news…Crystal Palace submit bid for “clever” £12m maestro, he’s a big upgrade on Riedewald

Journalist says Crystal Palace are not interested in Batshuayi

Crystal Palace reporter Matt Woosnam has revealed the Eagles are not interested in signing Michy Batshuayi on a permanent basis.

The Chelsea striker has enjoyed two loan spells at Selhurst Park and scored eight goals in 33 appearances.

Although the Belgium international has returned to Stamford Bridge ahead of the new season, he is among those boss Thomas Tuchel is keen to sell in order to boost his transfer kitty.

Chelsea are looking to offload a string of high-earning fringe players as they set their sights on signing big-name targets like Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

Batshuayi has failed to nail down a regular starting berth at Chelsea following a reported £33million transfer from Marseille in 2016.

The 27-year-old has also spent time at Borussia Dortmund and Valencia since his move to west London but new Palace manager Patrick Vieira, who was appointed earlier this month, will not be dipping into his transfer budget to secure Batshuayi’s services permanently.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, The Athletic journalist Woosnam said: “I think that’s almost certainly not going to happen. It’s out of the question.

“Palace are looking at revitalising their squad and it’s very clear they’re looking at younger players.

“That does not mean completely avoiding slightly older players but Batshuayi is slightly old in that respect.”
