Berwick Rangers 1-6 Rangers B

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing over some news from the club’s youth ranks.

As shared by the official Twitter page of Rangers B & Academy, the B team defeated Berwick Rangers 6-1 away from home with six different scorers in what was described as a ‘great performance’ with ‘brilliant team play’.

Robbie Fraser, Leon King, Alex Lowry, Ross McCausland, Kyle McClelland and Tony Weston all managed to get themselves on the scoresheet as Rangers B followed up their 3-0 win at home to Hammarby on Tuesday night.

The young Bears are in a very good place at this moment in time, and some of their performances should certainly catch the eye of Steven Gerrard, who may now think about giving one or two of them a chance in the first team.

Callum McGregor shines for Scotland

When Scott Brown left Celtic in the summer for a player-coach role elsewhere, it left a huge void that needed to be filled at Parkhead.

Brown had been a gracious servant for so long to the Hoops but not only were they going to miss his tough-tackling nature, but also his leadership.

Fortunately, Celtic have a certain Callum McGregor at their disposal.

The midfielder didn’t enjoy the best of campaigns in 2020/21, being sent off for a late lunge on Glen Kamara in the final Old Firm of the season. However, he looks like a new man under Ange Postecoglou.

McGregor is the club captain and that fine reward has evidently improved his performances.

The Scottish star scored a screamer against Midtjylland in the Champions League and is now proving his worth on the international stage as well.

He featured for his country against Austria on Tuesday night and put in a fabulous showing as Scotland remarkably won 1-0.

The result was a huge one for the Scots as they significantly boosted their chances of qualifying for the World Cup next year.

Lyndon Dykes was the man who scored the goal but McGregor was undoubtedly the stand out man in the middle of the park.

On his way to being described as “immense” by The Scotsman reporter, Barry Anderson, the central midfielder was a thorn for Austria.

He completed 86% of his passes, produced a rare two dribbles and was also fouled on three occasions.

It was in physical battles where McGregor truly shone. During the course of the match, he won six of his nine ground duels (66.6%). That was the second-best tally on the entire field, only behind Che Adams.

His showing was so good that it even provoked praise from The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent, Jordan Campbell. At full-time, he said on Twitter: “That was McGregor’s best performance in a Scotland shirt.”

It’s hard to argue with that claim, especially when they beat a team ranked 23 places above them by FIFA.

McGregor did score at the recent European Championships when Scotland beat Croatia, but even this display outshone that one.

On that day, his pass success rate was better at 92% but he only won 40% of his defensive duels as his country conceded three times.

On this occasion, he ran the show from midfield and helped Scotland to a famous clean sheet and victory in a match they’d traditionally lose.

Only two outright results in the first round highlighted the cautious manner in which teams approach the first few games. The main interest in the second round will be if the teams let go of their inhibitions, many of whom will lose players part of India’s ODI squad against England. A look at the Super League matches starting Monday:

Group B

Baroda v Uttar Pradesh in Vadodara
This is the clash of the semi-finalists from last season, the two strongest teams in Group B. UP will miss Suresh Raina, who joins the Indian team. Similarly, Baroda, playing their first match of the season, will lose Yusuf Pathan, their key player. This will be a rare occasion, though, when Irfan Pathan will play for them and Yusuf will be away on national duty. The Moti Bagh Stadium pitch usually assists the fast bowlers.Maharashtra v Andhra in Nasik
The Nasik featherbed, on which Tamil Nadu scored 648 for 3 and failed to take 20 wickets, will be in the focus again. Maharashtra, the hosts, will hate to be on the receiving end once more, against an Andhra side who conceded a first-innings lead to UP. The team who loses this match could well end this season languishing at the bottom.

Group A

Gujarat v Mumbai in Surat
The only two teams that managed outright wins in the first round. Both the teams had everything going for them and will look for more of the same. Mumbai have called up Vinayak Mane in place of Rohit Sharma, another of the players who will leave to join the Indian ODI side.Hyderabad v Delhi in Hyderabad
Delhi, the defending champions, had a tough first match, where they had to work hard to bowl Punjab for a below-par total. They weren’t left with enough time to force a result. Hyderabad had a tighter game, where they held on for a 27-run first-innings lead against Orissa. Delhi will miss Virat Kohli, and Hyderabad Pragyan Ojha.Punjab v Rajasthan in Mohali
Rajasthan, with a new captain in Venugopal Rao, had a disappointing start to the season – an outright loss to Mumbai. They would want to set things right against Punjab, who will be without Yuvraj Singh. Punjab struggled against Delhi, especially with their bowling. They are one of the teams yet to recover from the hole the ICL has left them in. A loss here for either team might jolt their chances of making it to the knockout stage.Saurashtra v Orissa in Rajkot
While other teams have lost out on first-choice players because of the India-England series, Saurashtra have lost out on their first-choice venue, the Madhavrao Scindia Stadium. Khandheri Cricket Stadium will be making its first-class debut with this match. Saurashtra have other problems to sort out too. Semi-finalists last year, they were thrashed by Gujarat by an innings and 227 runs in the first round. Orissa, the surprise package from last season, have only one point from their first match.

Pentangular teams call up replacements

The provinces competing for the Pentangular Cup will be hit by the absence of the players named in Pakistan’s14-man squad for the three-ODI series against West Indies in Abu Dhabi during the tournament’s third- and fourth-round matches. Five players, included in the squad of seven for the Hong Kong Sixes, will also not be available for the third-round games. The two teams most affected are defending champions Sind, and Punjab. Sind will be without Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam and opening batsman Khalid Latif, all part of the ODI squad, as well as Faisal Iqbal and Anwar Ali, who will be in Hong Kong. Punjab are worse off, with Shoaib Malik, Nasir Jamshed, Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal and Saeed Ajmal in the ODI squad and Mohammad Talha and Mohammad Salman, a wicketkeeper, in the Sixes team.Four of Federal Areas’ players will be absent: fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar, Ifthikar Anjum and Sohail Tanvir and opening batsman Raheel Majeed. Baluchistan, who upset Sind in the previous round, have lost two players in Misbah-ul-Haq and Abdur Rauf. North West Frontier Province, who were already without captain Younis Khan, playing for South Australia, will also be without Umar Gul, who was captain in Younis’ absence. The Abu Dhabi ODIs take place from November 12 to 14, and the players will attend a two-day training camp in Karachi. They will return for the two final rounds of matches. Sind’s Sohail Khan and Federal Areas’ Yasir Arafat are standbys for the ODIs, and will be available unless they are called up to the squad. The reserves called up by the teams are:Punjab: Ayub Dogar, Azhar Ali, Zulqanain Haider (wk).Sind: Asad Shafiq, Ali Asad, Afsar Nawaz, Uzair-ul-Haq, Tabish Khan.NWFP: Armaghan Elahi.Balochistan: Sohaib Maqsood, Asad Ali.Federal Areas: Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Rameez, Kamran Hussain.

Leeds pundit makes major transfer demand

Leeds United pundit Joe Wainman insists that the club need to bring in two more signings before the transfer deadline.

The club have been relatively quiet in this transfer window, with Junior Firpo, Jack Harrison, and the goalkeeper Krisoffer Klaesson.

Wainman, though, insists that more depth is needed in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad if they are to properly compete at the highest level of the Premier League.

Bielsa has previously claimed that he does not expect the club to do any more business.

But Wainman believes that both a central midfielder and a winger are required, especially after Ian Poveda was allowed to move to Blackburn Rovers on loan.

Wainman has previously claimed that a new left-back was also required, but he believes that the signing of Firpo from Barcelona has gone some way to plugging that gap.

Asked about whether the club still needed new acquisitions ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline, he said: “Central midfield and winger, in that order. I think left-back, we’ve brought Firpo in, my worry is obviously if we were to get an injury but we can move people about, which isn’t ideal, but we definitely need another midfielder and another winger option now that Poveda’s gone on loan to Blackburn.

“We do need something there.”

Hatfield: Villa were interested in McKennie last summer

Aston Villa were interested in Weston McKennie last summer, according to Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Italian giants Juventus signed McKennie on a one-year loan deal last August with an option to buy. A report in the Independent states that Tottenham Hotspur have spoken to Juventus about signing the highly-rated American and that sources believe a move for under £40m may be possible.

McKennie featured 46 times for Juventus last season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in all competitions in his first year in Turin. Luke Hatfield says that Aston Villa were interested in the 22-year-old last summer, telling Football FanCast: “It’s a weird one because, you know, last summer if he was available the same way he was and I think he ended up going to Juve last summer, then yeah Villa would have been all over it. I mean, they were interested.”

Calciomercato.com reported earlier this week that Villa are again interested in McKennie this summer and with interest from Spurs also, there is a battle for his signature during this transfer window.

Villa have done some really good business this summer bringing in Leon Bailey, Axel Tuanzebe, Danny Ings, Ashley Young and Emi Buendia. Dean Smith’s side managed to respond to an opening day Premier League defeat at the hands of Watford with a 2-0 victory against Newcastle United last weekend.

Aston Villa: Spurs make Caleb Chukwuemeka bid

Tottenham Hotspur have made a player-plus-cash bid for Aston Villa target Caleb Chukwuemeka, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Villa links

Villa were linked with a move for Chukwuemeka, older brother of Villa midfielder Carney, earlier this month.

The Daily Mail claimed that Villa have had an approach for the forward turned down by Northampton Town.

Chukwuemeka, who Keith Curle said ‘had a little bit of magic’ last season, has made 28 senior appearances for The Cobblers.

It seems as if Villa will now have to battle Spurs for the 19-year-old, though, going off recent reports.

The Latest: Spurs bid

Football Insider, who were informed by a Tottenham source, shared an update on Chukwuemeka on Wednesday.

They suggested that Spurs are offering Northampton £1m plus their own teenage striker Kion Etete in a bid to land Chukwuemeka.

Chukwuemeka has less than 12 months remaining on his Northampton contract, so Spurs’ bid could possibly be enough to land the teenager.

The Verdict: Villa need to act

Chukwuemeka is clearly highly thought of by Villa and Spurs, who have both firmed up their interest with an approach and offer respectively.

Villa may now need to act fast if they want to sign Chukwuemeka. You’d expect younger brother Carney could help seal a possible move, with Villa bolstering their academy ranks by already signing Josh Feeney, Ajani Burchall and Finn Azaz.

The club’s academy appears to be going from strength to strength after winning the FA Youth Cup last season, and adding Chukwuemeka to their ranks could be another solid move.

Agbonlahor issues Klaesson warning

Leeds would be better off signing a more experienced goalkeeper than Kristoffer Klaesson.

That’s according to former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

News emerged from the same publication on Thursday that Leeds are in advanced talks to sign the 20-year-old from Oslo-based club Valerenga.

A deal for the £450,000-valued ‘keeper is said to be ‘edging closer’, with a contract on the table.

Phil Hay, Leeds United correspondent for The Athletic, reported earlier in July that Leeds had stepped-up their efforts to sign a new back-up to Illan Meslier after Kiko Casilla left on loan.

In addition to Klaesson, Levante’s Dani Cardenas and Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman have also been considered. An injury to Magpies no. 1 Martin Dubravka, though, has complicated any move for the latter.

The latest

Agbonlahor believes the sensible approach is to recruit a deputy ‘keeper who is a capable no. 1.

And he has doubts as to whether Klaesson meets that standard with only limited experience in a league that ranks outside UEFA’s top 20.

“Any player can get injured at any time,” he said. “Your number one keeper can get injured for the season on the opening day of the campaign.

“You have to be very careful with number two goalkeepers, they have to be quality. You look at Aston Villa and other teams, they try to get a quality number two in because you never know what can happen in football.

“I wouldn’t want to put that on a young goalkeeper. I’d rather have somebody with at least a few years of experience in a top league.”

The verdict

You’d have to say Agbonlahor has a point. We shouldn’t write off Klaesson simply because of the league he comes from, but do Leeds really believe he’s ready to step-in for a number of months if Meslier was to get injured?

What about the alternatives, then?

Well, Woodman probably wouldn’t be keen on the move given that it wouldn’t make much difference to his prospects of first-team football, and Dubravka’s injury may even offer him a path into the first-team on Tyneside.

But Cardenas might tick the boxes. The 24-year-old forced his way into Levante’s first team at the back-end of last season. He may not have ‘a few years of experience in a top league’ but, significantly, he would not be coming into a top league completely raw like Klaesson.

In other news, Leeds are monitoring this defender.
