Seventeen year old Michael Parsons set for NUL debut against Foxes

Richard Walsh11-Sep-2002Somerset Sabres are set to blood seventeen year old Michael Parsons in the day night match against Leicester Foxes at Grace Road this evening.Fast bowler Parsons who will celebrate his eighteenth birthday in October has just completed his first year at the Academy in Taunton where he has made quite an impression for himself.During this season he has played several times for Somerset Second Eleven, played for the Somerset Board Eleven and been a key member of the ECB Trophy winning Somerset Under 19’s side.Clearly delighted by his selection to play he told me earlier this morning: "I felt a bit nervous when I received the phone call to tell me that I was playing. It was a bit of a shock, but obviously I’m excited and really looking forward to the experience of playing in the first team and soaking up the atmosphere."Parsons was born and brought up in Taunton and attended Ladymead School before moving onto Richard Huish College. Originally he played club cricket for Staplegrove in Taunton, but earlier this season joined Wembdon Cricket Club in Bridgwater.Certainly the coaching staff at Somerset rate Parsons highly. First team coach Kevin Shine told me: "Having worked alongside the Academy boys during last winter I have seen a lot of Michael and have every confidence in him to go out and do a job for us."Assistant coach Mark Garaway who is also the Director of the Academy at Taunton told me: "I am very pleased for him, and he thoroughly deserves a chance after putting in a number of excellent performances. One of his biggest strengths is the ability to remain unphased by challenging situations so we are confident that he will play well."

Expert fears Vieira’s style will not suit Palace talisman Zaha

Get French Football News’ Adam White fears Wilfried Zaha will struggle to show his best form under new Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira.

Former Arsenal captain Vieira was named as Roy Hodgson’s successor earlier this month, having seen the former England chief step down at the end of last season.

Vieira, however, was not Palace chairman Steve Parish’s first choice candidate for the top job. His appointment only came after the club failed to agree terms with Nuno Espirito Santo, who has since taken charge of Tottenham Hotspur, and Lucien Favre turned down the role.

Ligue One expert White watched Vieira closely when the ex-France international was in charge of Nice.

Having cut his managerial teeth in Major League Soccer with New York City FC, Vieira had a two-and-a-half year stint as Nice’s boss before being sacked last December.

White worries that Vieira’s style of play will not suit Palace’s flair players.

When asked by Football FanCast how Zaha and Eberechi Eze would fare, he said: “I think it depends on what formation he decides to land on. Does he play Zaha further forward or off the wing?

“If Vieira continues to use the style he did at Nice then it could be difficult because Zaha will not get lots of chances. He will be isolated, in theory, as well.

“It could be a tough season for Zaha and Palace in general. It will be interesting to see how he decides to utilise Zaha.”

Windass: Crystal Palace would welcome Joshua King - Exclusive

Crystal Palace would take former Everton attacker Joshua King “all day long”, claims former Premier League striker Dean Windass.

Everton signed King on a short-term deal from Bournemouth at the beginning of February and had an option to extend it.

However, the Merseyside club have opted against doing so and he will now leave Goodison Park at the end of the month.

It leaves the 29-year-old now needing to find a new team, and Windass believes he would be welcomed warmly at a side like Crystal Palace.

Speaking exclusively to TT about the player’s future, the ex-Hull City star said:

“Crystal Palace would take him all day long, but he needs to be playing, he needs to be proving he’s a goalscorer.

“Listen, it’s hard when you’ve done ever so well for Bournemouth and you’re scoring goals, you get a move and you hardly play. And then people think you’re a bad player overnight.

“It doesn’t work like that. You need to be playing week in, week out to be scoring goals.”

Indeed, it was hard for King to get any sort of real rhythm last season at Everton, with the Norway international receiving limited minutes.

In contrast, during his time at Bournemouth, King did play when fit and delivered. While he was not at his best in the Cherries’ last Premier League season, he did manage to score 16 goals in the 2016/17 campaign before hitting double digits again in the 2018/19 campaign.

So, on a free transfer, perhaps it is something worth exploring for Palace’s new manager.

Everton fans on Yerry Mina dancing footage

Many Everton fans have been left gushing as footage emerged featuring Yerry Mina.

As shared by Toffee TV on their Twitter page, the defender stepped up for Colombia in a penalty shootout against Uruguay in the Copa America and placed his effort nicely into the corner.

He then sucked his thumb and started dancing in celebration, much to the delight of many of the Goodison Park faithful.

Mina was a key player for the Toffees in the 2020/21 season, averaging more clearances (4.5) and shots (0.7) per game and having a higher passing success percentage (90.1%) then Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane (WhoScored).

Everton supporters will be hoping that he can return from the Copa America fully fit and ready to start the new campaign well under new manager Rafa Benitez.

England go one-nil up in the series after conclusive victory at Lord's

Ralph Dellor29-Jul-2002England had to work hard – rather harder than might have been expected – to secure their victory, but at half past two on a hot and sultry afternoon, Craig White bowled a ball to Ashish Nehra who pushed forward to give a catch to Graham Thorpe at second slip and England had won by 170 runs. Ajit Agarkar, who had gone into the match with a Test average of 7.81, was left not out on 109 as he and Nehra had forced England to sweat through a record last wicket partnership of 63 before they were separated and celebrations could begin.Unlike their more illustrious colleagues, VVS Laxman and Agarkar provided stubborn resistance to England’s bowlers on the final morning. With England moving in for the kill, the batsmen refused to be flustered as they showed great resolve in face of the inevitable. Both passed fifty and runs flowed as they exploited the vast areas left vacant so that close catchers could be deployed all round the bat.Sixty runs came in the first hour as Nasser Hussain juggled his resources until he found the right answer. For the fourth time in the innings, a bowling change resulted in a wicket in the new bowler’s first over. The pair had added 126 for the seventh wicket and had defied the attack in all its guises for 209 balls when Simon Jones induced Laxman to drive on the off side. The ball flew to point where Michael Vaughan held the catch.Still runs accumulated; still the slips, gullies and short legs were in attendance. The new batsman, Anil Kumble might not have appeared as comfortable as Laxman had, but he survived in company with the admirable Agarkar until giving Matthew Hoggard a simple return catch. Zaheer Khan’s stay was a short one before he edged Craig White to Alec Stewart, but Agarkar and Ashish Nehra at least ensured that the catering staff were required at lunch. They probably had the dishes washed and dried when Nehra brought up the fifty partnership with a disdainfully hooked six off Andrew Flintoff. Then Agarkar reached his hundred by pushing Jones through the covers for two when on 99. His first run was a mixture of single and celebration, while he probably floated back for the second without his feet touching the ground.Of course, it could not last and after the batsmen had enjoyed their fun in delaying England’s inevitable win, White found the ball that brought the entertainment to an end and England head for Trent Bridge leading the series one-nil.

Leeds offered Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa could land a superb signing in Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah this summer.

What’s the story?

The England under-21 international was on the books at Elland Road during a half-season loan spell when the Whites were in the Championship, and while the Gunners ended up recalling him in January 2020, it appears they are now keen to offload him on a permanent basis.

According to Football Insider, Leeds have been offered the chance to sign Nketiah permanently, with Arsenal willing to listen to offers in order to fund a summer rebuild.

Bielsa rates him

Despite only briefly playing under Bielsa – he featured just 19 times and scored five goals – the £17m-rated forward appeared to leave a big impression back at Elland Road.

Bielsa himself said: “He’s a specialist great player with a lot of resources and our play is a collective way of playing and one player needs to adapt to this style.

“For this reason when we felt he was part of the team we thought that we were going to feel the same and that he would continue with us. He didn’t take this decision but he is a great player, an excellent professional and he had very good behaviour, he is a gentleman in every sense.”
Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan has waxed lyrical about Nketiah, claiming that his style of play is very much reminiscent of Jermain Defoe. He said: “He reminds me of another Jermaine Defoe and look at how well he did at West Ham. He’s very much that similar sort of player. He plays off the shoulder, very dangerous in the box. He’s a player you can’t take your eyes off because his movement’s so good.”

Given his previous experience of playing at Elland Road under Bielsa, Nketiah would fancy his chances of hitting the ground running were he to join Leeds a second time.

Meanwhile, Bielsa can sign this Championship starlet who silenced Elland Road for free…

McIntosh marathon innings steers Auckland well clear of trouble

Stylish left-handed opener Tim McIntosh batted throughout the day mixing classical strokeplay with excellent judgement to take Auckland within sight of first innings points at the end of day three

Steve Deane08-Dec-2000Stylish left-handed opener Tim McIntosh batted throughout the day mixing classical strokeplay with excellent judgement to take Auckland within sight of first innings points at the end of day three.McIntosh began the day on 54 and by stumps he was undefeated on 172. His marathon innings has so far lasted 524 minutes, 438 balls, and has included 20 fours and a six.He said he it was a great feeling to achieve the milestone of a first-class hundred and his highest score in any form of cricket. After fielding for a day and a half he had felt “a bit knackered” at the start of his innings yesterday, but today he felt capable of batting for long periods of time.He had to endure being struck on the body and helmet by some venomous short-pitched bowling.”He (Shane Bond) got me a beauty yesterday, just on the shoulder. There was a big bruise overnight, so I was quite happy to bounce back today and felt a bit more confident after seeing off a few overs from him.”He didn’t play the hook or pull much throughout his innings as he had been dismissed in his previous innings against Northern Districts when attempting a pull shot.He said his immediate goal was to cement his place in the Auckland team and he was aiming to score at least four first-class hundreds this season, while his long-term goal was to play for New Zealand.Auckland cruised through the first hour with McIntosh and Lou Vincent adding 48 runs without offering a chance. With the ball 40 overs old Canterbury resorted to the bowling of Chris Harris but neither batter looked in a mood to gift their wicket to the bald avenger. In the second session McIntosh went on to record his maiden first-class century. The 206 runs he added with Vincent for Auckland’s fourth wicket eclipsed the previous record against Canterbury of 177 set by L.G. Hemus and A.E. Relf at Christchurch in 1907/08.McIntosh offered a chance when on 112, edging a Shane Bond delivery with the second new ball low to wicket keeper Gareth Hopkins’ left but the catch was spilled and Bond remained wicketless.Wisneski finally ended the marathon partnership, which had lasted 272 minutes and 451 balls, claiming his fourth wicket when Vincent lazily cut a short, wide delivery to Jarred Englefield in the gully.Tama Canning struck in breezy 35, adding 64 with McIntosh before mistiming a drive and being caught and bowled by Carl Anderson.Richard Irving departed quickly for four, caught behind off the bowling of Wisneski, giving the tireless seamer five wickets for the innings.Wisneski has been the pick of the Canterbury bowlers returning figures of 40 over, 5 for 115.But the story of the day was McIntosh whose maiden undefeated century was an innings of genuine quality and assurance. The 21-year old looks to have a big future, starting tomorrow when he’ll chase a double-century and hope to guide Auckland to first innings points.

Spurs’ Giovani Lo Celso was awful vs Leeds

After tasting his first Premier League defeat as a manager against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, Tottenham caretaker boss Ryan Mason will no doubt be searching for answers over the course of the week.

The Lilywhites looked second best all afternoon, mustering just three shots on target in the entire 90 minutes and eventually falling to a timid 3-1 defeat at Elland Road.

While Spurs’ star-studded attack failed to light up a wet and windy Yorkshire afternoon, it was Giovani Lo Celso’s performance in the middle of the park which surely raised the most eyebrows.

The Argentina international has become a regular starter in the opening weeks of Mason’s tenure as interim boss and was once again deployed in a much deeper role against Leeds.

However, the midfielder failed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and was too often guilty of either misplacing easy passes or just running into a cul-de-sac – one particular moment in the second half saw him simply run the ball out of play while trying to dribble along the touchline.

As per Sofascore, he completed just one of his four attempted dribbles on the day, the worst of any Spurs player, managed no shots on goal and provided just one accurate cross. That sloppiness in possession was reflected by the fact he lost the ball on 19 separate occasions, the joint-most of any player in a Spurs shirt, while a measly 76% passing accuracy rate also told a story of his wastefulness.

In his post-match player ratings for The Independent, Andrew Gamble gave Lo Celso a five, saying: “Completely anonymous as he was dominated by Klich.”

The Spurs Web’s verdict on the Argentine was even more scathing, giving him a three with this assessment: “Lo Celso didn’t do enough to win the midfield battle off the ball today. Also misplaced so many key passes that could have led to goals.”

With just one goal and one assist in 17 Premier League games all season, Lo Celso has been rather poor in recent months, and it’s surely on Mason now to make a ruthless early call and drop him from the starting line-up.

With a talent like Tanguy Ndombele waiting in the wings, Spurs could give the Frenchman the chance to impress his new boss by taking Lo Celso out of the firing line.

In other news, this manager could restore shades of Pochettino if Spurs choose him as Mourinho’s successor.
