On Wednesday, the Premier League and suicide prevention charity Samaritans launched the 'Together Against Suicide’ project – something that has been backed by all 20 clubs in the English top flight. The initiative launches on World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10) and has been developed by the Premier League in collaboration with broadcaster Roman Kemp and Tottenham Hotspur CEO Vinai Venkatesham. The Premier League is funding 11 clubs to provide bespoke support for fans at home matchdays across the 2025-26 season.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: "Sadly, suicide is an issue that affects people of all ages from all backgrounds. We believe football can play a vital role in reducing the stigma around it and connecting fans who are experiencing suicidal thoughts with the support they need. By working with clubs and partners to develop ‘Together Against Suicide’, we want fans to understand that they do not have to deal with their problems alone. There are many ways for people to have the conversations that can have a positive impact on their mental wellbeing, whether this is by utilising the matchday services that are being launched by clubs this weekend, speaking to family and friends or by contacting Samaritans or other experts in this area for confidential advice. This is about using the power of football to help save lives and we urge fans to look after themselves and those they care about."

Tottenham Hotspur CEO Vinai Venkatesham added: "Together Against Suicide is a significant step in recognising the role that football can play in raising awareness of mental health issues and supporting people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts. I’d like to thank the Premier League and all 20 clubs for their support in shaping this initiative, and in particular Roman Kemp who came up with the idea that we see launching today. Sadly, suicide affects more people than many of us realise and this initiative sees the Premier League and clubs coming together to support fans – whether through safe spaces at stadiums or helping them access expert advice wherever they are. We want fans to understand that one conversation can make all the difference, and that they can turn to their clubs for support when they need it most."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Recent data shows that someone in the United Kingdom takes their own life every 90 minutes, and one in four people have had suicidal thoughts. This new Premier League pilot project begins on Saturday, September 13, and will see clubs providing tailored environments to offer fans the opportunity to talk in safe, non-judgemental settings, as well as directing them to trusted support organisations. The clubs involved so far are: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Tottenham, West Ham, Wolves, and Southampton.

The Premier League has also created an online hub which includes information on signs and symptoms for people to look for if they are concerned about how they or someone else is feeling. For more information, click here.

TV personality Kemp added, “As football fans, we are always there for our clubs. This initiative was created with the intention of flipping it on its head so clubs can be there for fans when they need it the most. As someone who has felt the impact of suicide and talked about experiencing suicidal thoughts myself, I know that the sense of community football brings can be used to help those in need and help save lives. I’m so proud to work on an initiative that puts compassion and connection at the heart of football and on something I really believe will make a difference to the fans that need it. A huge thank you to Vinai Venkatesham, who’s been working tirelessly to get this going, and to the Premier League for making this happen and getting the backing of all 20 Premier League clubs.”

PIF set sights on signing 13-goal star for Newcastle after Isak bombshell

Following the undeniable bombshell that Alexander Isak has asked to leave the club, Newcastle United and PIF have reportedly set their sights on a talented replacement.

When news emerged that he was suffering from a thigh injury and he would, therefore, not travel to take part in Newcastle’s Asia tour, it became clear that trouble may be afoot. And soon enough, reports came to the fore that Isak has, indeed, asked to leave St James’ Park this summer amid interest from Saudi Arabia and Liverpool.

It would have been Newcastle’s biggest fear heading into this summer, but that fear would have only increased by their own transfer failure. The last thing that Eddie Howe needs after watching the Magpies miss out on Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo is for Isak to depart, but that may be the reality that he is forced to live with next season.

There is still one positive in this saga for Newcastle, though. As frustrating as losing Isak would be, his exit would instantly solve any remaining PSR problems for the foreseeable future and allow PIF to flex their financial muscles in full.

According to The Athletic, the final package to sign Isak could cost as much as ÂŁ250m, with Newcastle demanding a transfer fee worth as much as ÂŁ150m before agent fees and wages are taken into account.

With a chunk of that money, the Magpies could welcome an instant replacement and then finally splash the cash to improve other areas in Howe’s squad.

PIF set sights on Lois Openda

Turning towards an Isak replacement before anything, those at St James’ Park are now reportedly ‘targeting’ a Bundesliga talent. According to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, PIF have now set their sights on signing Lois Openda for Newcastle this summer as they look to find the heir to Isak’s Tyneside throne.

The RB Leipzig forward, now at the peak of his powers at 25 years old, is not the out-and-out goalscorer that Isak is, but he is a better creator and could provide Howe with a better all-rounder than the Swede.

After impressing in the 2023/24 campaign, Openda picked up where he left off last season and ended the campaign with 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. Described as a “fantastic young striker” by scout Jacek Kulig whilst in Germany, the Belgian could now get the chance to make the biggest move of his career so far.

Ashwin fifty powers Dindigul Dragons to maiden TNPL title

A collective effort by their bowlers limited Lyca Kovai Kings, in their third straight final, to 129 for 7

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Aug-2024A 46-ball 52 from R Ashwin at No. 3 following a collective bowling effort helped Dindigul Dragons to their maiden Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title. It was Ashwin’s third successive fifty in TNPL 2024.Lyca Kovai Kings, in their third straight final, were restricted to 129 for 7 – thanks to two-wicket hauls from Sandeep Warrier, Varun Chakravarthy and P Vignesh each – with Dragons overhauling it with six wickets and ten balls to spare at Chepauk. Ashwin also contributed with four stingy overs for just 13 runs. After being inserted, Kings raced away to 48 for 1 in five overs. But Varun struck twice in two balls in the final over of the powerplay to get rid of S Sujay (22 off 12) and U Mukilesh. B Sai Sudharsan, who scored an unbeaten 123 in the Qualifier 1, soon cut a short and wide one straight to backward point to leave Kings in tatters at 51 for 4.R Ashwin struck his third successive half-century in the TNPL•TNPLAtheeq Ur Rahman and Ram Arvindh then stitched a 36-run stand in 28 balls. But once that partnership was broken by Suboth Bhati, Kings run-rate took a hit. M Shahrukh Khan, Kings’ captain, also had an off day and that culminated in an abject finish to the innings. The start to Dragons’ 130-run chase was a bit frantic, with both the openers being dismissed in 15 balls. But Ashwin and B Indrajith (32 off 35) brought a sense of calmness. Ashwin hit one four and three sixes in his stay. They added a run-a-ball 65 for the third wicket to all but seal the chase. One that was completed swiftly in the end, thanks to Sarath Kumar’s 15-ball 27 with two fours and as many sixes. While Ashwin was named Player of the Match for his innings, Shahrukh took the series honours for his all-round efforts: 225 runs at a strike rate of 182.92 – easily the best among the top run-scorers in TNPL 2024 – and 13 wickets, second to only M Poiyamozhi’s 16.

Nottingham Forest in advanced talks for ÂŁ18m+ star similar to Vinicius Jr

Nottingham Forest have Europa Conference League football to look forward to next term and are now progressing in their attempts to bring a highly-rated forward to the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest transfer targets as they prepare for Europe

It wasn’t to be for Nottingham Forest in their pursuit of Champions League football, though a place in Europe’s third-tier continental tournament could offer a realistic prospect of silverware next season.

West Ham United and Chelsea’s previous exploits in the Europa Conference League will offer Nuno Espirito Santo all the encouragement he needs, but the Portuguese boss knows signings will be necessary to balance their trophy bid with domestic endeavours.

Nottingham Forest managerNunoEspirito Santo is seen before the match

According to reports, Nottingham Forest are interested in a permanent deal for Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, though there could also be a possibility of a loan agreement in the eyes of former scout Mick Brown.

Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes is a surprise target for the Tricky Trees, lending credence to the notion that they will go all out this summer following an impressive Premier League campaign.

Intriguingly, Espirito Santo stopped short of confirming he would be in charge next term after his side missed out on Champions League qualification, stating: “We are in good place and now it’s time to reflect and focus on the future. This is not a moment to speak about me. It’s about the club.”

Either way, there is plenty to be positive about on reflection. Nottingham Forest have shown they are a force that can compete with the best after conducting a mass overhaul across the last couple of years in the East Midlands.

Sparing no expense, the Tricky Trees are now advancing in their pursuit to sign a talented forward who has likened himself to Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr.

Enjoying a bright start to the year, Jesus has netted seven goals and laid on a solitary assist in 23 appearances across all competitions for Brazil’s reigning top-flight champions.

Chris Wood has been a talismanic figure at the City Ground of late, though his age may work against him moving forward and securing an alternative option would make sense to bolster squad depth.

Now, it remains to be seen if Nottingham Forest can push a deal over the line as they look to build on an impressive campaign by keeping pace with contenders for European football in 2025/26.

Man City's "exceptional" star is finished at the Etihad if Reijnders signs

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola isn’t used to going entire seasons without a trophy.

Indeed, the 2024/25 campaign was just the second in his career without a single major trophy being won, and he needs to change things this summer.

Manchester City manager PepGuardiolaapplauds fans after the match

The summer transfer window could be the most important in the club’s recent history. Kevin De Bruyne is departing, while several other players could be sold.

In terms of incomings, Florian Wirtz and Morgan Gibbs-White have both been routinely linked over the previous few weeks, but the latest on that is that Wirtz will not be heading to the Etihad.

Recent news has seen AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders linked with a move too.

Why Man City must sign Tijjani Reijnders

With De Bruyne leaving and several midfielders aged 30 or over, Guardiola looks set to bring in someone younger during the summer.

Reijnders fits the bill, especially as he is coming to the peak of his powers. The Dutchman has enjoyed a sublime campaign with Milan throughout 2024/25.

AC Milan's Tijjani Reijnders.

There has been a distinct lack of goals from City’s central midfield options this term. Matheus Nunes is the highest scorer with four, but the Milan sensation will be able to add an attacking threat to Guardiola’s side.

Indeed, the 26-year-old has scored 15 times and provided five assists for the Serie A side.

Furthermore, when compared to his peers across Europe’s top five leagues, the midfielder ranks in the top 3% for both non-penalty goals (0.29) and progressive carries (3.11) per 90, along with ranking in the top 16% for touches in the attacking penalty area.

This suggests the Dutchman loves bursting forward into dangerous positions regularly and could give City some much-needed dynamism in the heart of the pitch.

What a move for Reijnders would mean for City

If he does sign, it could be curtains for Ilkay Gundogan.

Gundogan played a key role for City during his first spell at the club, winning everything that was on offer.

A single-year sabbatical in Barcelona didn’t go as planned for the former Borussia Dortmund star, and he returned to the Etihad last summer.

Manchester City's IlkayGundogan

Hailed as “exceptional” by Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, upon his arrival, he failed to replicate the feats of his first spell back in Manchester.

Across 48 matches, the 34-year-old recorded just seven goal contributions in all competitions for the club, a far cry from the 18 he registered two seasons ago.

Of course, age catches up with us all, but the midfielder simply failed to offer much for Guardiola throughout the campaign, especially in the Premier League.

Not only did he create just three big chances across 31 league games, but the Turkish-born star failed to score a single goal, won less than 50% of his total duels and made only 0.8 tackles per game.

If City capture the signing of Reijnders in the next few weeks, it will surely mean the end of Gundogan’s second stint in England.

They say never go back. In Gundogan’s case, perhaps he should have remained in Barcelona.

As bad as Schar & Burn: Newcastle must drop 4/10 star whose "legs gave up"

Newcastle United missed the chance to reinforce their lofty Premier League position as they were given a thorough hiding against Champions League-chasing rivals Aston Villa.

A switch flicked in December and United charged their way into the ascendancy, winning the Carabao Cup off Liverpool in March and underlining their elite-level credentials.

Still third in the top flight, Eddie Howe’s side now need to regroup ahead of the crucial final stretch of the season, their six-match winning run snapped.

Joelinton applauds Newcastle fans

However, this was a bruising display that will have left stand-in manager Jason Tindall seething. So often so strong, the centre-halves were taken to the shops against Villa Park’s slick frontline.

Newcastle's defence falls against Villa

Newcastle have been in emphatic form in recent weeks, turning Crystal Palace over 5-0 in midweek. However, the relentless fixture list, having forced United into three games over six days, claimed a top outfit in this one.

Fabian Schar equalised before twenty minutes after connecting with the in-form Harvey Barnes’ whipped delivery, but it was not a good evening for the long-serving Swiss centre-back, who disappointingly lost all five of his duels.

Likewise, Dan Burn has been a pillar of strength this term but he failed to produce his best performance, skewing Youri Tielemans’ lunge into his own net to all but seal the hosts’ victory. He also struggled to impose himself against a lively frontline, winning just one of five duels.

Dan Burn scores an own goal for Newcastle

Both Schar and Burn will recover over the coming days and gear up for next weekend’s crucial clash against Ipswich Town at St. James’ Park.

Options have been sparse in defence, but there’s one man who may be dropped going forward after being exposed against Unai Emery’s men.

Newcastle must now drop stalwart

Even with Lewis Hall sidelined for the rest of the season, Kieran Trippier surely needs to be benched for the tough run-in, with Howe perhaps shifting Tino Livramento back into his natural right-back berth and giving Matt Targett some rare game time from the outset.

Following the loss, the experienced full-back was branded with a 4/10 match rating by The Chronicle Live, who noted that he was run ragged by the Lions.

Ceding possession 16 times despite only making one key pass, as per Sofascore, Trippier’s ball-playing skills weren’t at their best, but more concerningly he only won one of his four contested ground duels, having a tough time against the dangerous Ollie Watkins.

Newcastle's Jason Tindall and Kieran Trippier

Newcastle writer Thomas Hammond even made the scathing comment that “Trippier’s legs gave up on him.” Aged 34 and a true veteran of the game, it’s hardly surprising that this might be the case for the vice-captain.

Schar and Burns suffered rare off-days and you’d think that all of a Magpies persuasion will be able to rally ahead of the stretch ahead, but if faced with such intensity again, Howe and Tindall might want to consider dropping Trippier, who was already at risk of being sold during the winter transfer window and may well be in the coming months.

Newcastle assistant manager Jason Tindall

The concern, of course, is that the Toon face a testing finish to the season, one which they will need to pass with flying colours if a place back at the continent’s prized tournament is to be achieved, lifting a stunning campaign even higher.

Australia's road to 2026: Eyes on Fraser-McGurk and Ellis' chance to lead

Everyone in the squad can expect an opportunity with six matches in less than two weeks

Andrew McGlashan03-Sep-2024An opening bat-off?All eyes will be on Jake Fraser-McGurk. But it’s worth remembering that for all the talk he has generated around the world over the last six months or so, he has yet to make his T20I debut. That will come at some point over the next six matches, but there is no guarantee it will always be in the opening position. Australia are expected to look at a few options as they ponder life after Warner.Related

Xavier Bartlett's 'surreal few months' leaves him eager for more

Connolly's love of the 'big moments' puts him on the fast track

Jos Buttler doubt for Australia T20Is after pulling out of Blast quarter-final

It’s been an interesting winter for Fraser-McGurk after shooting to prominence in the IPL for Delhi Capitals following his ODI debut against West Indies last season where he batted as though it was T20s. He was a traveling reserve for the T20 World Cup amid plenty of discussion that he should have been in the main squad, which wasn’t damped by Australia’s Super Eight exit, even if who he would have replaced was never really answered. Then he struggled for runs in the MLC where he made 81 in seven innings for San Francisco Unicorns. It could be that captain Mitchell Marsh partners Travis Head at the top and then the order is built from there. It’s conceivable that over six matches there are six different batting orders. Cameron Green is another option after the success he has previously had at the top of the order, although he expanded his finishing game in the IPL.Jake Fraser-McGurk sparkled at the IPL•Associated PressChance for Ellis to be the leaderIt’s a curious statistic that among Nathan Ellis’ 25 international appearances to date, only one of them has been at home – a T20I against England in 2022 where he took 3 for 20 in a total of 208 for 6. That will surely change come the November white-ball series against Pakistan, but for now it continues to be on the road where his opportunities come. And this tour represents a chance for him to take the lead in an attack where, through little fault of his own, he has often felt like an understudy.Ellis’ numbers, particularly in T20Is, suggest he could have had more chances than have come his way. He played four matches at this year’s World Cup, but only when one of the big three was rested. Now, with Josh Hazlewood’s withdrawal from the Scotland series, he is the Australia’s most experienced quick. It will be interesting to see which phases of the game he is used in. His reputation has been built on being a superb death bowler, but it’s understood that Australia have highlighted their powerplay bowling as an area that needs work. At the last two T20 World Cups crucial defeats by New Zealand (in Sydney) and India (in St Lucia) have come on the back of being dominated by the opposition batters in the first six overs, while against Afghanistan it took them 15.5 overs to break the opening stand. The swing of Xavier Bartlett will be an option while the pace of Riley Meredith has replaced Hazlewood in the squad. Green will likely have a role with the ball as well in the first six and don’t be surprised to see Australia try and squeeze in an over of spin from someone other than Adam Zampa. But with six matches in 12 days, expect everyone to be given a chance at some stage.

Over to InglisOne of the significant personnel changes after the T20 World Cup is that Josh Inglis will now get a run as wicketkeeper although the selectors have not yet put a line through Matthew Wade. One of the consequences of Wade not being there, along with Warner’s retirement, is that Australia have lost two left-handers. It was a factor that played in the favour of Cooper Connolly’s selection. All Inglis’ T20I innings have come in the top five and he struck 110 off 50 balls against India in Visakhapatnam last year batting at No. 3. However, it could be that he slots more directly into Wade’s position lower down as a finisher as Australia assess their options at that crucial, and fiendishly difficult, part of the batting order. Marcus Stoinis had an impressive group stage of the T20 World Cup at No. 5, but there may be consideration given as to where Tim David bats, particularly in the absence of Glenn Maxwell.Fielding sparkIf one area cost Australia in the Caribbean, it was the fielding. They had a horror day against Afghanistan with five drops and other misfields which came off the back of a poor display against Scotland. They will want to significantly sharpen up. The inclusion of a couple of younger names in Fraser-McGurk and Connolly should help, both in terms of skill and energy. Green and Aaron Hardie, who are yet to command regular places in the T20 side, are also good in the field as is Sean Abbott, a late addition after Spencer Johnson’s injury.

Harmanpreet and Shafali's pyrotechnics give brand India another boost

Their respect for each other is endearing, but the fire in the contest between the two batters was anything but

Annesha Ghosh24-May-2022Shafali Verma is pacing towards Harmanpreet Kaur as the Supernovas captain trudges towards the dugout after a momentum-shifting 51-ball 71. The 18-year-old Velocity opener then extends her arm, clutches Harmanpreet’s palm in a homie handshake, grins in appreciation, pats on her back, and walks off.If brand India Women ever needed a hero shot for a marketing campaign on its explosive batters or, more specifically, the passing of the baton in this regard, this sequence between Shafali and Harmanpreet might be a worthy choice.Related

Pooja Vastrakar once again proves she is the X-factor

Even more fitting was the fact that these moments played out during the Women’s T20 Challenge. It was, after all, the second edition of this tournament that catapulted Shafali into India reckoning almost overnight, in 2019. An international debut materialised soon after, not to mention under Harmanpreet’s captaincy, during a record-breaking seven-month period that culminated in the big-hitting Shafali almost singlehandedly steering Harmanpreet’s India to their first-ever T20 World Cup final, in March 2020.The bonhomie on view between the two India team-mates at Pune’s MCA Stadium on Tuesday was endearing. The fire in the contest between the two batters, though, was anything but. Set 151 to win their season opener, Velocity opener Shafali had a task on hand: Go big or watch Supernovas saunter to a fourth straight final of a tournament in its fourth season. No team in the Women’s T20 Challenge had successfully chased that big a total before. And the failure to do so on the day would have shoved Velocity into a must-win situation – and on the same boat as defending champions Trailblazers – for the third and final round-robin game of the four-match competition. But Shafali understood the assignment. So, she took on the No. 1-ranked white-ball bowler, Sophie Ecclestone, the second ball of the chase and refused to relent – against Ecclestone, offspinner V Chandu, and pacers Meghana Singh and Pooja Vatsrakar – ever since. All 10 of Shafali’s boundaries, a six included, came against this pack of four. Each of them ended up conceding at a rate of 144 or more against her as she galloped to the fastest fifty – off just 30 balls – in the tournament’s brief history.Shafali Verma smashed a 30-ball half-century•BCCI”I took some learnings from the first innings [of the day] – which areas were easier to access and which weren’t,” Shafali said to the host broadcaster after Velocity’s seven-wicket win. “I was especially wary of the direction of the wind, so I chose my strokes accordingly.”I have worked very hard on them [shots in the third region that required deft touch rather than brute force] over a while and there are two or three more shots that I have in my repertoire and would like to convert in the next game.”Velocity captain Deepti Sharma, who made 24 in an unbroken, match-clinching stand with South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, described Shafali’s “fantastic” innings as a turning point in the game. Wolvaardt, who shared a 14-ball 11 stand with Shafali, was equally effusive in her praise of the teen opener.”I really enjoyed it,” Wolvaardt said about Shafali’s aggressive approach that, she added, helped her ease into her unbeaten 51-run innings. “It was really nice for me to come in when there’s a set batter like that. Because, then, all that my role becomes is just getting her on strike. So, it’s an easy way for me to get into my innings when I have someone like that at the other end. I’m glad we were able to bat together for a little bit today.”She’s probably the most chilled batter that I’ve ever met. So it’s really cool to hear how she goes about her game,” Wolvaardt said when asked if she has shared any notes on batting with Shafali in the dressing room. “She’s just really relaxed, really backs her skills and knows what our options are. I think I need to do a bit more of that sometimes. Sometimes, I overthink my game a little bit too much… Hopefully, I can take some learnings out of it (their interaction).”Her team-mates can’t get enough of Harmanpreet Kaur after she pulled off a stunning catch at short third man to send back Shafali Verma•BCCIThe only measure of discomfort Shafali showed during her knock, which underpinned a foundational 63-run second-wicket stand with Yastika Bhatia, was against Australia legspinner Alana King and West Indies medium-pacer Deandra Dottin. Motoring on after Dottin dropped her on 35 at point off Ecclestone, Shafali, on the insistence of her partner, Wolvaardt, took the DRS and survived a close call, overturning an on-field lbw decision that had initially gone in King’s favour when Shafali was on 49.Shafali, however, was only able to extend her stay by another six balls. Stopping her on her march was Harmanpreet, who plucked the ball mid-air, with both hands, at short third when Shafali tried to make room and glide it off Dottin. The blinder was one of the two catches Player of the Match Harmanpreet, by far the best fielder in the Indian side, took on the day. The first, of the other opener, Natthakan Chantam’s, had come earlier in the innings, with Harmanpreet looking every bit the captain on a mission to seal Supernovas’ entry into the final. With the bat, to that end, she had already done her bit. Equal parts circumspect and alive to opportunities, Harmanpreet steadied Supernovas’ ship with her first fifty of this edition. En route what was also her highest score in the tournament yet, she relied heavily on the sweep, using possibly every variation of the shot in the book – including the reverse option, albeit sparingly – to good effect. With Taniya Bhatia, she added 82 off 63 and then a 28-ball 28 with Sune Luus, making good on her intent to score quickly and sizably in the death, as she had made clear the previous evening.Having walked in when her side was 18 for 3 in the fourth over, Harmanpreet departed after bringing Supernovas to the safety of 138 in the final ball of the 19th over. For the batter who top-scored in their win against Trailblazers less than 18 hours ago, it was fitting she walked back to the dugout to a standing ovation from her team-mates and highlights-worthy gesture of appreciation from a player almost half her age, but nearly an equal in pluck and pyrotechnics.

How often have both openers been dismissed for ducks in an ODI?

Also: how many players have scored a Test hundred without previously having made a first-class fifty?

Steven Lynch31-Mar-2020Craig Ervine recently scored a century in his first Test as captain. Is he the first to do this for Zimbabwe, apart from Dave Houghton in their inaugural Test? asked Malcolm Price from Zimbabwe

Craig Ervine marked his first (and so far only) Test as captain with 107 and 43 against Bangladesh in Mirpur in February. You’re right to say that Dave Houghton also achieved this feat – he made 121 and 41 not out against India in Harare in November 1992. But one other Zimbabwean has also done it: Ervine’s current team-mate Brendan Taylor hit 71 and 105 not out in his first Test as captain, against Bangladesh in Harare in August 2011.Is there anyone stuck on 99 Test wickets, or close to some similar milestone, during this break from international cricket? asked Prasant Naik from India

I think the closest to a significant Test milestone at the moment is the Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who is currently marooned on 297 wickets. You’re talking about the match against West Indies at Old Trafford, when both Martin Guptill and Colin Munro fell for golden ducks. New Zealand still managed to win the match (just) despite the efforts of Carlos Brathwaite. Losing both openers for nought isn’t that rare: it had happened earlier in the same World Cup, when Afghanistan lost Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai for 0 against Australia in Bristol. Those were the 43rd and 44th instances in all one-day internationals: the first was in Ahmedabad in 1981-82, when Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth both bagged ducks against England. Only 11 of the matches were won after such a poor start.Jerome Taylor’s 106 from No. 8 remains his highest first-class score•Getty ImagesJerome Taylor scored his maiden first-class fifty in a Test, and converted it into a century. Has anyone else scored a Test hundred without having previously made a first-class half-century? asked Craig McGregor from New Zealand

The Jamaican fast bowler Jerome Taylor’s feat came during a rapid innings of 106 for West Indies against New Zealand in Dunedin in 2008-09. His previous-highest in first-class cricket was just 40, for Leicestershire against Derbyshire at Grace Road in 2007. A total of 42 men have now scored their maiden first-class hundred in a Test – but, remarkably, the only one of them who had never even reached 50 before shares Jerome’s surname. The New Zealander Bruce Taylor went into his first Test, against India in Calcutta in 1964-65, with a highest score of 49 a few weeks before, but hit 105 from No. 8, and then took 5 for 86.What unusual event held up Glamorgan’s Championship match against Gloucestershire in 1948? asked Mark Andrews from England

I had to look this one up and luckily Wisden provided the answer. The match was played at Eugene Cross Park in Ebbw Vale in August 1948. The first day was a peculiar one, as the match report explains: “A mountain mist enshrouded the ground for most of the first day’s play, but the strangest diversion of all was the appearance of a flock of sheep on the field, causing the game to be held up.” The Cricketer called it a “small” flock, but also revealed that when the groundsman couldn’t be found before the start of the second day, the umpires rolled the pitch for the prescribed period. The match finished in a rainy draw but it didn’t affect Glamorgan too much. They went on to win the Championship that season for the first time.Use our

Shohei Ohtani Continues Hot Streak With Leadoff Homer Off Garrett Crochet

After going just 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5–2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, Shohei Ohtani's five-game home run streak came to an abrupt end. On Saturday evening, however, he wasted no time getting back on the wagon.

Sitting on a 1–1 count to lead off the contest against Garrett Crochet, Ohtani received a 97 mph fastball right down the middle from the Red Sox ace—and made him pay. The Dodgers star ripped the pitch to dead center field for his 38th home run of the season, giving Los Angeles a 1–0 lead.

Here's a look at the dinger:

Crochet seemingly knew it right from the get go, slowly turning around to watch the ball fly to dead center field.

Dodgers right fielder Teoscar Hernandez also took Crochet deep to give Los Angeles a 2–0 lead in the first, with Boston center fielder Jarren Duran answering in the second with a two-run triple off Clayton Kershaw.
