England query Stoneman dismissal with match referee

England have sought clarification from the match referee over the use of the Decision Review System (DRS) by the third umpire after the dismissal of Mark Stoneman on the first day in Perth

Nannes: I still don’t think Stoneman hit it

England have sought clarification from the match referee over the use of the Decision Review System (DRS) by the third umpire after the dismissal of Mark Stoneman on the first day of the third Test in Perth. The England captain, Joe Root, and coach, Trevor Bayliss, went to see the match referee, Richie Richardson, after play at the end of the first day in an attempt to understand the process by which Aleem Dar gave Stoneman out.Dar overruled the not-out decision by the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus on evidence the England camp felt was far from conclusive. While footage later emerged which seemed to suggest Dar was correct, England wanted to make the point that the umpires had not had such footage when the decision was made.Stoneman was given out caught behind after Dar adjudged the ball had brushed the glove while it was still on his bat on its way through to the keeper. While the England camp are disputing that they made a complaint, it is clear they were unimpressed by the speed of Dar’s decision and wanted to know what evidence he had for making it. Root was understood to be particularly angry, and was seen thumping the dressing room door in frustration when Stoneman was given out.England’s wider issue is with the lack of standardisation with DRS around the world. The equipment used – and therefore the process – is different depending on the capabilities of the host broadcaster, with England hoping the ICC eventually insists on standardisation.

Aston Villa Can Land Diaby Partner With £13m Swoop

Aston Villa completed their fourth signing of the summer transfer window this week as they announced the arrival of Nicolo Zaniolo on loan from Galatasaray.

Who have Aston Villa signed this summer?

The Villans had already splashed the cash to sign winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £51.9m.

Unai Emery also swooped to land Youri Tielemans on a free transfer from Leicester City and his former Villarreal central defender Pau Torres for a reported fee of £33m.

There could be more on the way for Villa supporters, though, as they have been touted with making an addition in the number nine position.

Santos centre-forward Marcos Leonardo has been linked with a move to the club earlier this summer, which suggests that Emery is looking at possible competition for Ollie Watkins.

How good is Marcos Leonardo?

The 20-year-old dynamo, who has reportedly been valued at €15m (£13m) by the Brazilian club, is an excellent young talent who could be an exciting player to play alongside Diaby in attack over the years to come.

Despite his young age, Leonardo has a wealth of experience with Santos as he has already been able to rack up 150 first-team appearances for the club. In that time, the talented finisher has scored 48 goals and provided 11 assists for his teammates.

This year, the prolific ace has scored seven goals and assisted two in 13 Serie A matches. He also enjoyed a fantastic U20 World Cup this summer with a return of five goals in five outings, which earned him a Sofascore rating of 7.44.

Leonardo scored 12 goals in 18 clashes across the two competitions for club and country combined, which is an average of one strike every 1.5 appearances.

Watkins, meanwhile, scored 15 goals in 37 Premier League games – one every 2.47 matches – and averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.88 last season for Villa.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for the Brazilian youngster, who is seven years younger than the England international, to develop into a better option than the ex-Brentford man if he is able to translate that form over to English football.

Brazil forward Marcos Leonardo.

Having a player like Diaby on the wing to supply him could allow the 20-year-old starlet to thrive as the ex-Bundesliga wizard is a sublime creator.

The 24-year-old magician created 14 'big chances' and produced 1.8 key passes per game in the German top-flight last term, which came after he provided 15 'big chances' and 1.9 key passes per outing during the 2021/22 campaign.

No Villa player, meanwhile, managed more than 1.2 key passes per match last season, which suggests that the French dynamo is Emery's outstanding creative threat and could be a dream player for Leonardo to make runs for.

U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed that the Brazil U20 international has "frightening" pace and this is another reason why he could be a lethal partner for Diaby as the current Villa ace is also known for his speed.

Bayer Leverkusen's website once described the France international as like 'lightning with a run-up' due to his immense pace when bursting forward to attack, which has also been backed up by The Analyst, which hailed his running power as 'searing'.

Therefore, Villa should sign Leonardo as an eventual replacement for Watkins due to the potentially lethal link-up that he could have with Diaby.

Chelsea: Reporter not happy after hearing who could be "striker"

Chelsea are yet to make a firm bid for any other striker this window, according to Paul Brown.

Reports have linked the London club with Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic, however, a deal has not materialised yet.

What is the latest striker news for Chelsea?

The Blues are currently undergoing a complete overhaul to their number nine position.

The club have already brought in two players who can play up front, with Christopher Nkunku arriving from RB Leipzig for a fee of £52m and Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson arriving at Stamford Bridge on an eight-year-deal for a reported fee of £30.1m.

Future Chelsea signingChristopher Nkunku

In terms of outgoings, Chelsea have sold Kai Havertz, who predominantly played as a forward during his three-year spell at the club, to London rivals Arsenal in a deal worth £65m. The forward was a very divisive player to the Chelsea fanbase, as seen by the reactions to his departure.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku are also set to leave the club this summer, with the Gabonese forward having agreed terms with French side Marseille ahead of a potential move, with the two clubs set to being talks regarding a transfer fee in the coming days. In the case of Lukaku, a potential move to Inter has collapsed due to it being revealed that the Belgian had negotiated with Juventus before the Champions League final, however both Juventus and a number of clubs in Saudi Arabia remain interested in the striker.

The Blues have also been linked with another incoming striker, with reports stating that Vlahovic is a target for the London club. However, The Daily Mail are reporting that the Serbian forward's salary are a stumbling block that could prevent the move from happening, whilst the fact that PSG remains favourites for the 23-year-olds signature may make Chelsea move onto different targets.

Speaking to FootballFanCast, Brown stated that the club have not made a "firm" bid for any other striker so far this summer.

What did Paul Brown say about Chelsea's striking situation?

When asked about Chelsea's forward situation, Brown told FootballFanCast: "I think for a long time, people thought that Vlahovic was going to be the one they went for, but as far as I'm aware, there hasn't been a firm bid made for any other striker. I know that obviously they've already brought in Jackson, and some people believe that Nkunku might be used in that area. Personally, I think that'd be a mistake. But aside from those two, I don't think Chelsea have made a firm bid for another striker. So there hasn't been any progress made on Vlahovic, really, or anyone else.

Should Chelsea buy another striker this window?

Chelsea have a lot more areas that need urgent addressing than striker at the moment.

When it comes to central defence, the Blues need to delve into the market to address that area. Following the news that Wesley Fofana suffered an ACL injury and will be out for the foreseeable future, the club is down to just three remaining natural centre-backs in the first-team squad: Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, and Trevoh Chalobah, with Benoit Badiashille also recovering from a long term injury. Should the reports that Inter Milan wants to sign Chalobah be true, the club would be down to the bare bones in that department, so it would be wise that they use some of their remaining funds for that position.

Another position that is lacking depth is central midfield. The club is hopeful of completing the signing of Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo despite having a second bid rejected for the Ecuadorian that was in the region of £70m. However, should the club add Caicedo to their ranks, they would still be lacking experienced depth, with the only options beyond Enzo Fernandez currently being Conor Gallagher, who is linked with a potential move away from the club, and Carney Chukwumeka, who has only played 30 games of senior football. Instead of adding to a position they have already strengthened in this summer, the club should consider ensuring that the squad has real depth available all around to ensure they can compete on all fronts

Tottenham Eye £30m Tapsoba Alternative Who Mourinho Loves

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to in the mix to sign AS Roma defender, Roger Ibanez, with Ange Postecoglou continuing his search to find new centre-back recruits ahead of next season.

What are the latest Tottenham transfer rumours?

As per recent speculation, the Lilywhites are believed to be nearing a 'conclusion' in their negotiations for Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven and Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba amid that centre-back search, with the latter man deemed to be the 'top target' at present, according to 90min.

While the north Londoners are hoping to strike a deal for less than the 24-year-old €50m (£43m) asking price, they could also be eyeing possible alternatives if a compromise cannot be met, with Italian outlet Siamolaroma reporting that Postecoglou and co are interested in the aforementioned Ibanez.

The report outlines that the likes of Fulham and Newcastle United are also showing an interest in the two-cap Brazil international, with the Serie A side said to be willing to discuss a possible exit for a fee of around €35m (£30m).

Should Tottenham sign Roger Ibanez?

Despite the ongoing focus on Tapsoba, it may prove to be a wise move if Spurs are to look to a slightly cheaper option such as Ibanez instead, with the former Atalanta man having sparkled during his time at the Stadio Olimpico thus far.

Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba.

The 6 foot 1 rock was notably dubbed "outstanding" by journalist Josh Bunting last year after helping the Italian giants to Europa Conference League glory, having so far racked up 149 appearances in all competitions for the club after arriving on an initial loan deal back in 2020.

The one-time Fluminense sensation has also been the recipient of hefty praise from manager Jose Mourinho in recent times, with the former Tottenham boss lauding him as "untouchable", while also describing the defender as a player who has "given everything he has" during his time in Rome.

If Postecoglou was to firm up his interest in the Brazilian he would be acquiring a figure who is particularly adept at winning back possession at the heart of the backline, showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 3% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for interceptions, as well as in the top 18% for tackles made.

That is a superior record to what Tapsoba has achieved in Germany over the past 365 days, with the Burkina Faso international ranking in just the bottom 39% for interceptions and just the top 36% for tackles.

While Ibanez is perhaps less adept at playing out from the back – as he ranks in just the bottom 21% for progressive passes, in contrast to Tapsoba (top 5%) – the in-demand ace does boast a pass accuracy rate of 87.7% as a marker of his composure on the ball, with that placing him slightly ahead of the Leverkusen man (86.4%).

Although Mourinho's prior 'untouchable' remark may ensure that it proves a difficult task trying to prise Ibanez away from Roma this summer, the £32k-per-week machine would represent an ideal option as far as Postecoglou is concerned.

With Spurs needing to improve upon last season's dismal defensive record – after shipping 63 league goals – such a signing could help to bring back some much-needed solidity at N17.

Birmingham City in talks to sign “X-Factor” midfielder

Birmingham City are in talks to sign Derby County midfielder Krystian Bielik, according to a report from the Telegraph

What is the latest news regarding Krystian Bielik?

According to the report, the Championship side are locked in talks with the League One outfit for the Polish international, with the fee potentially reaching £1m

The midfielder spent last season on loan at the Midlands club, making 35 appearances in the league and recording one goal and one assist across the campaign.

Birmingham City loan midfielderKrystian Bielik.

Birmingham look set to be under the new ownership of American hedge fund manager Tom Wagner soon, and manager John Eustace will be hoping to make Bielik his first signing of the new era.

Will Krystian Bielik join Birmingham City?

Bielik joined his parent club Derby from Arsenal in the summer of 2019 for a fee that could’ve risen to £10m, should all of the performance incentives been met.

The Polish midfielder has had an incredibly unfortunate time at Pride Park, suffering a pair of devastating knee injuries in back-to-back seasons that kept him out of action for a combined 634 days.

Ahead of last season, following Derby’s relegation to League One and the potential of a place in the Polish national team for the 2022 World Cup, Birmingham swooped in and picked him up on loan for the season.

Across the campaign, Bielik averaged a 6.77 rating, according to WhoScored, which was the second-highest average rating in the Birmingham squad for players who played over 2000 minutes

The midfielder is a defensive powerhouse, having averaged 1.92 blocks per 90, 2.17 clearances per 90 and 2.07 aerials won per 90 ranking him in the top 10% of all players across Europe's "next eight" leagues over the last year, as per to FBref. The Pole also averages 2.04 tackles per 90 and 1.45 interceptions per 90, further showcasing his defensive solidity

The Blues stand to get a fantastic deal for the 25-year-old colossus, with his market value currently €2.8m (£2.4m).

One reason why the midfielder, who was described by journalist Ryan Conway as Derby County’s “X-Factor”, is available for less than half his market value is his contract situation, with the players deal at Derby set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Should Birmingham be able to complete this deal despite their potential FFP problems, they will secure a fantastic midfielder who could help them in their quest to finish in the top half of the Championship for the first time since the 2015/16 campaign.

Craig Cachopa will consider whether to go full circle and qualify for New Zealand after negotiating an early release from his contract at Sussex for what the club called “personal reasons”.Cachopa was enticed to England in 2014 by Luke Wright, now Sussex’s captain, when he was playing in New Zealand. He was born in South Africa but qualifies as a non-overseas signing in England as he holds a Portuguese passport. After three seasons in county cricket, however, in which his success has been modest, he could chose to explore links with New Zealand, where he was a former U-19 national captain.Cachopa, 24, said: “I am grateful for the fantastic opportunity I have had over the past three years here at Sussex, however I think it is a good time for me to return to New Zealand to try and achieve some of my childhood dreams after some much needed rest.””I love county cricket and it has been a fabulous experience for me representing Sussex in all three formats. But I intend to spend some quality time with my family at home in New Zealand resting before considering my options, and deciding on my next steps towards achieving my aspirations to play international cricket.”Cachopa made his Sussex debut in the NatWest T20 Blast in 2014. He played 16 Championship matches for Sussex, and 43 white-ball matches, across the NatWest T20 Blast and the Royal London One-Day Cup. A powerful middle-order hitter, the T20 Blast was his strongest format for Sussex, as he averaged 27.18 with a strike rate of 136.79, and was also deployed as a wicketkeeper in a number of the Sharks’ T20 matches.Sussex’s head coach Mark Davis said, “I am sure Craig has enjoyed his time at Sussex and would have learnt a great deal about himself as well as his game. He is an immensely talented cricketer who has yet to reach his potential. We wish him great success in whatever he decides to pursue in the future.”Cachopa spent the England off-season last winter in New Zealand, representing Wellington as an overseas player. It was a return to his first-class roots: he made his debut for Wellington in 2012 before moving to Auckland.
