Quando o Corinthians vai melhorar? Sylvinho analisa e faz prognóstico: 'Resposta vem do campo'

Trunfo no lado direito

CPL eyeing on-schedule start, but wary of potential IPL clash

Contingencies being planned for, but tournament taking place could signal “Caribbean is open for business,” says COO

Caribbean Premier League (CPL) organisers hope that the tournament can still take place as scheduled in September, but plans are being developed to stage it behind closed doors, without overseas players, or in a “social-distancing stadium” in Barbados if required. With the Caribbean in lockdown and attempts to stop the spread of covid-19 proving successful so far – the death toll is yet to reach double figures in any of the six countries that host CPL games – it is possible that the CPL fixtures could be among the first staged globally, though chief operations officer Pete Russell confirmed the league would try to avoid a clash with a postponed IPL season.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Russell said he hoped that staging the tournament as planned could be “a sign that the Caribbean is open for business again” once the worst effects of the pandemic have passed.”It’s good that the Caribbean has locked down early, and it hasn’t been hit in the same way as the UK, for example,” Russell said. “We’re looking at different permutations in terms of what could or couldn’t happen, but the lucky thing is that we’ve got a bit of time – we don’t have to force a decision.”I don’t think there’s any question that we’ll be able to play it. We’re only going to play if it’s safe to do so, but we’ve been approached by a lot of the countries who want it to happen. The reason [for that] is that it’s a big sporting event, and it could act as a sign or a marker that the Caribbean is open for business again.”With the IPL season currently postponed indefinitely, it has been suggested that the tournament could be staged at some stage in September or October, not least with the T20 World Cup in October in doubt. Russell said that while the CPL would not try to compete for eyeballs with the most lucrative T20 league in the world, he hoped that the IPL could “figure out their own window”.”We wouldn’t go up against it,” he said. “While I know the BCCI is all-powerful in these things, there has to be some sensible consideration around what players and other leagues are doing.”I think IPL would want all the West Indian players to be playing in their tournament – it wouldn’t make sense for them to play at the same time as CPL when a lot of their stars are playing with us. That would defeat the objective. I don’t think they need to do that, either. They can figure out their own window, for sure.”If the tournament does go ahead as planned, it is possible that no overseas players will be involved due to health concerns and restrictions on international travel. The CPL’s organisers are also drawing up plans to hold games while maintaining social distancing within a stadium, a situation which would involve all players staying in the same hotels and the tournament being held at one or two venues instead of the planned six.”That’s what people are going to have to look at: how would a stadium look if you were to follow all the guidelines on social distancing? Of course, it’s doable. For instance, in Barbados, we would probably be able to do a social-distancing stadium, and it could be at 25% capacity – there’s a lot of organisation that goes into that, but it’s viable.”The player side is the important bit. It could be that CPL is played without international players this year, and there’s enough Caribbean talent to play without if we have to – that’s not our preferred option, but it’s doable.”And then obviously you have to go through the whole medical process. Would you quarantine players, or put them all in the same hotel? How would that all work? Even if we don’t necessary use [these plans] this year, it’s vitally important that we’ve done them. That’s my biggest focus at the minute.”The picture may become clearer next week, following an ICC meeting via videoconference in which board CEOs will discuss contingency plans, and Russell has been in regular contact with CWI chief executive Johnny Grave to work out how West Indies’ fixtures might affect the competition’s staging.”[The CWI] obviously want to get back playing. They’ve got the England tour – and I saw headlines today saying that is unlikely to take place – and then South Africa would be the first team in the Caribbean in August. There’s so much juggling to go on that it’s difficult to know what’s going to come out.”We know that in the West Indies, what’s good about CPL is that we’re employing cricketers and locals, while not many of them are getting paid at the minute. We’re an important part of that economic ecosystem, as much as we are about playing cricket.”I wouldn’t put money on it, but we could we be the first cricket back if September is our window. If we don’t play in September, then we can play probably in December. Talking to all the owners, they definitely want to do it, and for players it’s important by that stage that they’re getting some income. Our intention is definitely to play, but we would only ever do it if everything is right from a safety perspective.”

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick provides Dani Olmo update amid claims Blaugrana are unable to register £51m signing with La Liga

Hansi Flick shared an update on Dani Olmo's availability amid claims that Barcelona have been unable to register the £51m ($66m) signing with La Liga.

  • Barcelona's financial struggles continue
  • Are yet to register Olmo with La Liga
  • New signing unavailable for Valencia clash
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite the club’s well-documented financial woes, Barcelona have continued to secure high-profile signings with Olmo, Spain’s Euro 2024 hero, being one of their marquee acquisitions this summer from RB Leipzig. The Spanish playmaker, who returned to his boyhood club, is yet to make his debut after being left out of the squad for the 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Monday.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fans were hopeful that Olmo might be registered in time for Barcelona's La Liga opener against Valencia at Mestalla but Flick in his pre-match press conference on Friday, dashed those hopes by confirming that Olmo will not be available for the match. The manager said that the forward remains unavailable due to his physical condition rather than any registration problems.

  • WHAT FLICK SAID

"Dani Olmo is not in a good enough physical condition for tomorrow," he told reporters.

"We want to take care of him. It is important that everyone plays but also avoids injuries. We want everyone to be there and train, without getting injured."

When questioned about the ongoing issues with player registrations, Flick chose not to dwell on the topic and instead redirected attention to the Valencia battle. He confirmed that he would have 22-23 first-team players available to face Valencia and refrained from commenting further on the registration setbacks.

He added: "The things we can't change we don't think about. There are no excuses or complaints. Things were said. I have had many experiences in the past and I have arrived here with the situation that exists. We focus on tomorrow's game, we want to play a great match. Tomorrow morning the list of call-ups will be made official."

However, much to the relief of the Blaugrana faithful, playmaker Pedri, who had been sidelined with an injury sustained while on international duty with Spain, is once again available for selection.

"I am very happy to have Pedri again. He will be able to play the second half tomorrow," informed Flick.

The German also addressed the recovery of Gavi, who is working his way back from a serious ACL injury.

"He is working very well but needs time," he said. "He's a great player and I have to thank all the coaches who are around him and are helping him. I don't want to put pressure on him, he's 20 years old and we have to take care of him."

Clement may already have a Goldson replacement in Rangers’ "Rolls Royce"

Glasgow Rangers return to action after a two-week break following their defeat to Benfica at Ibrox in the Europa League last 16 second leg.

A trip to face Dundee was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, meaning Philippe Clement has had plenty of time to nurse his injured players back to full fitness ahead of the Premiership match against Hibs on Saturday afternoon.

Every match is now a cup final for the Light Blues as they aim to win their first title since 2021. The defeat to Benfica could be a blessing in disguise as the schedule won't be quite as hectic, but they still have to play ten matches (11 if they reach the Scottish Cup final) between now and the end of May.

Clement will be hoping his key players remain fit and healthy over the course of the next few weeks as a potential treble is within their grasp.

The defence in particular has been mightily impressive this season, especially domestically, and much of this is down to the solid partnership of John Souttar and Connor Goldson.

Goldson made his 300th appearance for the Gers in the recent win over Hearts, showing a level of consistency that often goes underappreciated by the Ibrox faithful.

Connor Goldson’s statistics for Rangers this season

After 29 Premiership matches this season, Rangers have conceded just 16 goals, the lowest in the top flight. This defensive stability has proven crucial to their recent ascent to the top of the league table, with Souttar and Goldson starring together.

There has been the odd mistake or two, however. During a tie against Aberdeen in November, Goldson was caught out by a long ball over the top, allowing Bojan Miovski to run through and score. He did win a penalty during injury time to salvage a draw, however.

Among his teammates, Goldson currently ranks third for accurate passes per game (61.7), along with ranking first for accurate long balls per game (5.7) and third for clearances per game (3), fully demonstrating his passing ability throughout the course of the season.

Souttar has also taken his game up another level since being deployed alongside Goldson, as the duo have wonderful chemistry.

The Englishman will hope to win another league title and the Scottish Cup before the end of the season, but the question is, how long will he remain at Ibrox for?

Connor Goldson’s Rangers future

Heading into the final few weeks of the 2021/22 season, Goldson’s contract was due to expire, with the speculation that he was going to leave for nothing once the campaign had ended.

At the start of June, the defender signed a four-year extension with the club, committing his future to the Glasgow side as he aimed to win more trophies.

Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson.

“Connor is an important player in our group and we are delighted that following all of our discussions, he has decided to commit his long-term future to Rangers.” Said sporting director Ross Wilson at the time, and it has proved to be a big coup keeping him at Ibrox.

The 31-year-old still has two years left on that contract, but Clement may well be looking for long-term replacements for the former Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back, especially as he seeks to lower the average age of the squad.

The Belgian shouldn’t dive into the market and splash millions on a player, however, as he has an ideal heir for Goldson already in his first-team squad – Leon King.

Leon King’s Rangers statistics

The 20-year-old displayed his impressive talents during the 2020/21 season, making his senior debut under Steven Gerrard during a League Cup clash against Falkirk.

Aged just 16 at the time, he was given 19 minutes towards the end of the match, while Gerrard also gave him his league debut against Livingston during the penultimate game of the championship-winning season.

It was clear the former Liverpool captain was all for developing youth talent and King was among one of the best in his age group.

Rangers centre-back Leon King.

King made six appearances in all competitions the following season, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst following Gerrard’s mantra of allowing youngsters to blossom. He even started two of the final three league matches that term, showing that the Dutchman trusted him.

This experience certainly stood him in good stead ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, as he was called into action sooner than he expected.

Injuries to Souttar and Ben Davies in the opening stages of the season saw King deployed next to Goldson in what was a baptism of fire for the youngster.

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton hailed King as a “big Rolls Royce” during the summer of 2022 and the youngster demonstrated his qualities alongside Goldson.

Throughout the season, he made 23 appearances for the club, which included six in the Champions League, facing off against the likes of Liverpool, Ajax and Napoli.

Despite the Gers losing all six matches in the competition, King still managed to win 50% of his total duels per game, along with making 1.7 tackles and completing 25.5 passes per game, showing that while he was thrown into the deep end, he was more than capable of swimming.

With Goldson and Souttar thriving, plus Leon Balogun also starring whenever he has been awarded a start, King has found game time much harder to come by this term compared to last.

The defender has made just four appearances – totalling 14 minutes overall – during 2023/24, with a loan move perhaps being the most logical option for him next season.

Leon King

Prior to signing an extended contract with the Light Blues in December 2022, Premier League clubs such as Manchester United and Newcastle United were circling around the youngster, looking to take advantage of his status.

While the previous few months have been tough, this learning process will give Clement the opportunity to find out if King has the maturity and commitment to remain at the club for the long term.

Goldson won't last forever and King may be the perfect choice to replace him when he finally departs Ibrox.

Fabrizio Romano shares Ruben Amorim contract twist that may help Liverpool

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided a significant update regarding Liverpool's top manager target Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim.

Amorim favourite to be Liverpool's next manager

Talk of who is going to be Jurgen Klopp's replacement at Anfield has been headline news in recent months, ever since the 56-year-old confirmed that he will depart as manager at the end of the season. The German has become a genuine club legend since arriving back in October 2015 and replacing him is going to be one of the hardest tasks at the club in many years.

With Xabi Alonso now out of the running to take over from Klopp in the summer – he has decided to remain at Bayer Leverkusen next season, as he closes in on Bundesliga title glory with them this season – Amorim has emerged as the new front-runner to come in.

Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim

The 39-year-old is excelling as Sporting boss currently, sitting top of the Primeira Liga and looking highly likely to seal title glory and is considered one of the most exciting and talented young managers in the whole of Europe.

Amorim certainly isn't the only option for Liverpool, with numerous others candidates mentioned as Klopp's potential successor, including Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann, but it does appear as though he is at the top of their list.

Now, a fresh update has dropped over the Portuguese coach – one that could act as a boost to Reds supporters.

Fabrizio Romano shares Ruben Amorim contract update

Writing on X on Sunday, Romano claimed that Amorim could actually leave Sporting on the cheap this summer, suggesting he could be acquired for just €10m (£8.5m) in case of a "top proposal".

This could be great news for Liverpool, assuming the Reds are viewed as a "top club proposal", potentially getting Amorim for a cheaper fee than the expected £17m.

At this point, it could be a surprise to some if he didn't become the Reds' next manager once the current campaign reaches its conclusion, but then it did look as though that was the case with Alonso, too, only for him to commit his future to Leverkusen.

Replacing Klopp is a task that is bordering on impossible, regardless of who his successor is, but if Liverpool see Amorim as the standout choice, they need to be trusted, with the returning Michael Edwards also likely to have a big say in the decision.

Report: Edwards and Hughes set to offer major Liverpool star new contract

It could be worth over £10m a year.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 6, 2024

He has caught the eye when it comes to honours, already winning one Primeira Liga title and three Portuguese League Cups, and his style of play is likely to appeal to Liverpool fans, with the Sporting manager even being described as the "anti-Mourinho", such is his attacking nature.

Mark Goldbridge rips into "joke" Man Utd star who lost the ball 17 times

Mark Goldbridge has laid into a Manchester United player in their Premier League win over Everton, accusing him of playing for the Blues because he was so careless in possession.

Man Utd pick up vital 2-0 win against Everton

It was another important afternoon for Erik ten Hag and his Red Devils players on Saturday, with the manager knowing that victory was essential in their hopes of sealing an unlikely Champions League qualification this season. They trailed Aston Villa by 11 points going into the match, and Tottenham by six points, so a slip-up would have been disastrous to their chances.

In truth, United were never close to their best at Old Trafford, but some poor Everton defending allowed them to ease the nerves, with James Tarkowski and Ben Godfrey both conceding penalties for fouls on Alejandro Garnacho. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford dispatched one spot-kick apiece, putting the hosts in complete control.

Garnacho

The second half saw Ten Hag's men coast through proceedings overall, despite the odd sporadic threat from the Blues, and they saw out the win in comfortable fashion.

Mark Goldbridge rips into Man Utd midfielder

Taking to X during the game, Goldbridge didn't hold back in his criticism of Casemiro, saying he was so poor that he was essentially "playing for Everton", also adding in another post: "Some of these players a joke! It's so clear they have downed tools. GET RID OF THEM."

This certainly wasn't Casemiro's finest performance in a United shirt, on a day that once again showed that he doesn't represent the future at Old Trafford. Now 31 years of age, the Brazilian has looked increasingly leggy this season, and his all-round game was lacking against Everton.

According to Sofascore, Casemiro lost possession a total of 17 times at home to the Blues, also completing just one out of three long balls. He was dribbled past once, too, and generally doesn't look like the same player he once did, back when few defensive midfielders in the world were more formidable.

Casemiro isn't out of contract at United until the summer of the 2026, but the club must surely consider moving him on at the end of the season, in order to receive a fee for him and get him off the wage bill. Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be looking for younger midfield signings, not to mention potentially a new manager, and the Brazil international feels like the past rather than the future.

"New addition to the injury list": Man Utd suffer fresh blow before Everton

He was largely excellent last season, which supporters will always appreciate, but there was a reason why Madrid were willing to sell him when they did, rebuilding their midfield with younger stars such as Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni. United must now follow suit and adopt a similar approach, bringing Casemiro's time at the club to an end.

Fit-again Smriti Mandhana to join India squad in the Caribbean

Smriti Mandhana has recovered from her toe injury and will join the India women’s squad in the Caribbean ahead of the second ODI against West Indies on November 3.ESPNcricinfo understands that Mandhana, who had sustained a fracture to her right toe while batting in the nets ahead of the ODI series against South Africa at home last month, will be leaving for the Caribbean on November 2. The BCCI confirmed on Friday that Mandhana will be available for selection from the third ODI onwards. The two teams will also play five T20Is as part of their build up to next year’s T20 World Cup.Mandhana spent a part of her recovery at home in Sangli, from where she posted an update via Instagram of her first running session. She subsequently underwent rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru even as the Indian squad left for the Caribbean on October 21. No replacement for Mandhana had been announced at the time.Mandhana, the vice-captain of the T20I side, had been named in both ODI and T20I squads for the tour, which is India’s final assignment this year. With no India players participating in the ongoing fifth edition of the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia, the matches in the West Indies could give Mandhana a chance to regain form ahead of the tour of Australia in January next year, where India will play a T20I tri-series against the hosts and England in the lead-up to the women’s T20 World Cup in February-March in Australia. In her most recent international assignment, the T20I series against South Africa in Surat, Mandhana had scored only 46 runs in four innings. Prior to that, she was below her best in the Women’s Cricket Super League in England too, scoring 268 runs in 11 innings for Western Storm.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

The London side are scheduled to regroup later this month under new manager Enzo Maresca before they jet off to the US for pre-season.

Man Utd may already have their next Rooney & Ronaldo in "incredible" duo

Manchester United have had numerous fantastic duos over the years, such as Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane, and of course Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.

However, one that stands out above all is Cristiano Ronaldo and Rooney, who developed a telepathic relationship as youngsters.

Erik ten Hag is attempting to reinstall the focus on developing youth and recreate that famous duo, with a handful of players becoming key to the Red Devils rebuild.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the dangerous pairing that could become Man United's next Rooney and Ronaldo.

The Rooney and Ronaldo dream duo

Sir Alex Ferguson's signing of Ronaldo and Rooney in consecutive summers during the early 2000's for a combined fee of £43m is arguably the best piece of business the club has completed in modern memory.

From 2006 to 2009 – when Ronaldo left for Real Madrid – Rooney, or the Portugal legend, was the top scorer across all competitions, with the 2007/08 season being the highlight of their time together. The number seven scored an insane 42 goals in 49 matches across all competitions, while Rooney registered 32 goal contributions in 43 games.

Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo

To sum up just how remarkable they were together, their combined goals over five seasons was 236 across all competitions, which is absolutely crazy.

With the two stars in the Red Devils attack, United notably won three Premier League titles and the Champions League, and Ten Hag will be hoping his new version of the duo can deliver similar success in the near future.

The new version of Rooney and Ronaldo

This season for United has been both frustrating yet somewhat promising, with the recent form of Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund bringing excitement back to the Red Devils faithful, and the latter two have shown signs of becoming the next deadly duo to become heroes for their club.

Their relationship has particularly blossomed since the turn of the year, with them both taking most of the attacking responsibility in the side, despite Hojlund being just 21 and Garnacho being 19.

Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho.

Since Boxing Day, the Argentine has scored four goals and provided two assists, while the Dane has become a record breaker, holding the status of the youngest-ever Premier League player to score in six consecutive games with an output of eight goals and two assists in his last eight.

Putting their team on their back, showing the courage to never let their head drop despite making mistakes, and continuously wanting to improve are admirable traits of the duo, and they’re very much like both Rooney and Ronaldo in that sense.

Former United player Michael Owen called Garnacho "incredible, – with the winger having also been dubbed a "young Cristiano" by Paul Scholes – while broadcaster Joe Thomlinson said that Hojlund is “ridiculous,” and in truth, they’re certainly living up to that reputation.

The future of Man United is extremely exciting, and for once, there is a sense of progress at the club. If the Red Devils are going to become the giant that they used to be on the field, then Garnacho and Hojlund will both be at the forefront of it.
