Newcastle on verge of beating Real Madrid to deal for "exciting" new gem

Already closing in on their first signing of the summer, Newcastle United are reportedly on the verge of beating Real Madrid in the race to welcome a young Spanish talent.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been forced to hold back in the last two transfer windows thanks to profit and sustainability rules, but will be desperate to make up for lost time when the summer arrives. Having already sold both Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly last month, those at St James’ Park may well finally have the space to welcome some fresh faces.

Just who those fresh faces are remains to be seen, but the rumours have certainly been coming thick and fast. Names such as Johan Bakayoko have threatened to steal the headlines this week in a move that would complete Newcastle’s frontline once and for all.

The PSV Eindhoven winger is a rising star and recently showed exactly what he’s capable of against Premier League opposition, scoring an impressive solo goal in a 3-2 victory against Liverpool in the Champions League.

He’s not the only winger on the Magpies’ list of potential reinforcements though. According to The Boot Room, Newcastle are now on the verge of signing Antonio Cordero from Malaga, having reportedly reached an agreement with the young Spaniard.

A player who will be arriving on a free deal in the summer if that agreement has been reached, Newcastle may well get the chance to celebrate victory against the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal in the transfer market.

Cordero, meanwhile, will be eager to make his mark on Eddie Howe’s side in pre-season if St James’ Park is to be his next destination. At just 18 years old, the Spaniard will have the chance to lay down an early marker for a place in Newcastle’s senior squad.

"Exciting" Cordero is an impressive coup

Given the interest of both Real Madrid and Arsenal, among others, Newcastle deserve credit for how they’ve swooped in and reportedly landed Cordero’s signature ahead of the summer.

The Malaga star has already been making his mark in senior football in Spain, scoring four goals and assisting another six in La Liga2 and seemingly in no mood to slow down any time soon. Earning plenty of praise as a result, analyst Ben Mattinson described Cordero as “direct” and “exciting” at the beginning of the year.

Following Almiron’s January exit, there’s certainly room for another winger at St James’ Park alongside Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon, which opens the door for a young prospect to arrive.

On a free deal, Newcastle also have the chance to welcome a future star without thinking about PSR concerns ahead of the summer transfer window – highlighting an intelligent move.

Newcastle also have a "very clever" £25m alternative if Bakayoko deal fails

Newcastle United are reportedly pushing to sign a “very clever” winger in the summer transfer window, as they look to add depth in attacking areas.

Newcastle target new wingers

The Magpies continue to be linked with new signings ahead of the next window, in what needs to be a period that sees Paul Mitchell help make Eddie Howe’s squad even more formidable. Johan Bakayoko is seen as a “top name right now” when it comes to potential additions, with the PSV Eindhoven winger a potentially exciting capture.

At least one new centre-back will also be needed, considering Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are ageing figures, and Sporting CP ace Ousmane Diomande has again been backed to join Newcastle in the summer. They are among many top clubs battling to sign the 21-year-old, however, so it won’t be easy to get him.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

It has also been claimed that the Magpies are set to beat Real Madrid to the services of Antonio Cordero, with the Malaga teenager a player who could have a bright future in the game. Despite his tender years, he has already made 45 appearances for the La Liga side, scoring five goals and also bagging eight assists.

Newcastle are still thought to be eyeing a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in the summer window, with the Republic of Ireland international surely weighing up his future at Anfield. With Alisson going nowhere and Giorgi Mamardashvili coming in, the 26-year-old may be pushed further down the pecking order.

Magpies make contact with agent of Turkey starlet

According to a new report from Milliyet, Newcastle have made contact with Baris Alper Yilmaz’s agent over a £25m move to St James’ at the end of the season. The Galatasaray winger was linked with a switch to the Magpies during the January transfer window, but he has stayed put for the time being.

Galatasaray'sBarisAlperYilmazand Ismail Jakobs celebrate after Victor Osimhen scores their third goal

Bakayoko stands out as a great option for Newcastle, possessing so much flair on the right flank, but Yilmaz should certainly be considered a strong alternative.

At 24, he has a little more experience than the PSV man, scoring 10 times in 18 Turkish Super Lig appearances this season, while he has netted twice in 24 caps for Turkey.

Journalist Graeme Bailey has heaped praise on him: “Yilmaz is different. He’s a fascinating player. I think he ticks a lot of boxes for Newcastle. He can play anywhere across the front three and is a very clever footballer. He’s a good age.”

Whether its Yilmaz or Bakayoko that comes in this summer, or another player for that matter, a new right winger is essential for Newcastle, both in terms of signing a Jacob Murphy upgrade and improving squad depth. It has to be seen as the key area of focus, alongside centre-back.

FSG chiefs wowed: Liverpool preparing £33m+ bid to sign new star for Slot

Liverpool are now preparing a bid to sign a new defender for Arne Slot as they look to beat Manchester United to him in the transfer windows ahead, with his talent having left Reds chiefs impressed, according to a fresh report.

Liverpool facing rebuild

Though currently top of the Premier League, there is no doubt that Arne Slot’s side will have to be active in upcoming transfer windows in order to keep their place among England’s and Europe’s elite.

They have already begun planning for the future in some areas, with Giorgi Mamardashvili being signed last summer to join the club in 2025 as the long term replacement for Alisson, who is now 32-years-old.

There will also need to be change in the frontline, with Darwin Núñez continuing to underwhelm and both summer signing Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota injury prone, leaving Slot’s side light in attack at times.

Then there is the well-publicised contract concern, with all of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold becoming free agents this summer as things stand and set to rob Liverpool of three of their key men should they not agree new deals.

Though there is hope that at least Van Dijk stays, nothing has been announced yet, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has already been the subject of one bid from Real Madrid this winter, with Los Blancos confident of landing him either now or in the summer.

But there is another key area that Liverpool are now looking to upgrade on, and to that end they are ready to splash the cash.

Liverpool ready bid for left-back

That comes as a fresh report out of Italy claims that Liverpool are now prepared to offer €40m (£33.7m) to sign fullback Patrick Dorgu amid interest from Manchester United and Napoli.

One major concern this season for the Reds has been the form of left back Andy Robertson this season, with the Scot well below his historic best and the need for a new left-back at Anfield drawn into sharp focus.

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool

They have been strongly linked with moves for Premier League pair Milos Kerkez and Antonee Robinson, but now appear to have moved away from the duo in favour of a more explosive option in the form of Dorgu.

Dubbed an “elite team player” with “immense physicality” and a “top mentality” by Analyst DanielScouting on X, Dorgu has been used mostly as a right-winger by Lecce so far this season, but is comfortable playing at left-back too having done so for much of his career and for the national team.

He is on the radar of several Premier League clubs, with Manchester United the latest to be keeping tabs on him after interest from Tottenham in the summer.

Now though, Liverpool could beat them both to his signature. As per the report, Liverpool have “prepared a €40m investment’’ to sign the Danish international. They add that they have scouted him on four occasions so far this season and that FSG officials have “been left convinced by the 20-year-old” based on what they have seen.

Any deal at that fee would represent Lecce’s biggest ever sale, but could prove a bargain should Dorgu be able to deliver on his immense potential, with the 20-year-old able to replace Robertson for the next decade at Anfield.

Forget Archer: New boss can strike gold with "exceptional" Southampton star

Interim Southampton manager Simon Rusk would have been pleased with his team’s efforts in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, even as Arne Slot’s Liverpool picked up a victory on the South Coast.

It wasn’t a complete stroll for the Reds when travelling to St. Mary’s, in a game they might have been expecting to cruise by in after Southampton’s recent 5-0 loss on their own patch to Tottenham Hotspur, but the table-topping side in the Premier League had to make do with a slim 2-1 win instead.

In particular, Rusk’s Saints will latch onto their second-half display for many a positive, with Cameron Archer scoring his side’s only goal of the night to boost his confidence.

Standout Saints performers vs Liverpool

Archer would gift the hosts some hope that they could get back into the EFL Cup contest, after Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott had combined for a quickfire first-half double.

That is the former Aston Villa’s man fifth strike in all competitions for his lowly side, and this is very much the pick of the bunch, as the Southampton number 19 was gifted time to take on various different Liverpool shirts before curling a fine effort home.

Away from the 23-year-old making Liverpool worry slightly, the likes of recently capped England senior international Taylor Harwood-Bellis also stood out, with the young centre-back winning 100% of his duels even when facing off against the aforementioned menace that is Nunez.

Rusk would have also been pleased by a second-half cameo from Yukinara Sugawara too, who completed three key passes from just 29 minutes of action, but another star shone bright for the Saints even with the level of opposition they were up against.

Fernandes' performance in numbers

Mateus Fernandes is one individual the new Saints manager – whenever Rusk steps down – will surely want to keep around the first team picture, after putting in another encouraging display for his new club.

Deployed down the left channel for this mid-week clash, the Portuguese midfielder was energetic and brave for his team when going in for duels and tackles in an intense second-half showing, whilst also being a threat when launching forward on occasion.

In keeping with his team’s lively second-half display, Fernandes would win eight duels and complete four tackles, whilst also proving himself to be a competent performer in attack when his passes weren’t wayward, with two key passes tallied up. It is no surprise that analyst Ben Mattinson previously lauded his “exceptional ability to play perfectly weighted through balls”.

The wide-eyed 20-year-old would also be involved in a major moment of controversy near the close of the EFL Cup clash, as he raced through on goal to try and equalise, only for Jarell Quansah to bring him down in what looked to be an obvious foul.

On another night, the Liverpool number 78 could have been sent off for his recklessness, but referee Simon Hooper would give nothing to the bemusement of the disgruntled home crowd and the agitated Southampton players.

As much as that would sour proceedings, Fernandes would have still been pleased with his efforts come full-time, with Daily Echo journalist George Rees-Julian gifting the former Sporting man a high 7/10 rating after the game, conceding that he was ‘robbed’ of a great chance at the end across a spirited outing.

He will hope he can stake a claim for more first-team opportunities moving forward, therefore, having already picked up 13 starts back in the Premier League under ex-boss Russell Martin.

Based off his display on Wednesday night against one of the top-flight’s most intimidating outfits, he should be given plenty more games in the division under the next regime.

Forget Son & Solanke: Spurs’ "world-class" talent is now emulating Kane

It’s been a mixed campaign for Tottenham Hotspur so far this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have looked incredible in some games, like the ones against Manchester United and Aston Villa, but then utterly hopeless in others, like the ones against Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town.

However, while it’s easy to focus on the negatives, there are also some undeniable positives, such as the attractive and ultra-attacking style of play the manager has firmly drilled into his team.

On top of that, several players have been sensational this season, including one who’s starting to emulate Harry Kane in some of his play, and no, it’s not Dominic Solanke.

Harry Kane's Tottenham legacy

When it comes to Spurs’ modern-day legends, there are none greater than Kane.

The England captain joined the club’s youth setup as a teenager and, following several loans all over the country, earned his opportunity over a decade ago and never looked back.

In all, the 31-year-old made 435 appearances for the North Londoners, in which he racked up a frankly ridiculous tally of 280 goals and 61 assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 1.27 games.

However, as his impressive number of assists would indicate, the sensational striker was more than just a poacher, and as the number ten on his back would have given away, he was more than adept at creating chances for his teammates.

In fact, it was with current club captain Son Heung-min that the Walthamstow-born star created the greatest goalscoring partnership in Premier League history, with the pair combining for 47 goals.

Amazingly, of those 47 goals, only 23 came from the Englishman, with the other 24 coming from his South Korean teammate, proving yet again that he was a supremely gifted creator.

Now, Spurs might never see a player like Kane again, but someone in their current squad is proving himself to be adept at scoring and creating, and they play particularly well with Son.

The Spurs star emulating Kane

So, let’s get right to the point, and while he’s playing well this season, with six goals and two assists to his name so far, the player in question is not Solanke.

Instead, it’s Swedish superstar Dejan Kulusevski, who has found himself playing almost exclusively in midfield this season, where he has seen his influence grow and performances dramatically improve.

For example, he was the beating heartbeat of arguably the team’s best performance this season, away at Old Trafford, scoring a goal and becoming the first away player since the 03/04 season to create nine chances in one match there.

Moreover, the “world-class” international, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, who was first brought to the club by former manager Antonio Conte, has already beaten his assist tally from last season.

In just 17 appearances across all competitions, the 24-year-old dynamo has provided five assists and scored twice, whereas last year, he provided just three and scored eight goals in 39 games.

On top of having a far more significant influence on proceedings, akin to Kane, the former Juventus ace has also always played well with Son, with the pair creating nine goals between them, which may well increase now the 24-year-old’s in the midfield.

Ultimately, while nobody can fully replace Harry Kane at Spurs, Kulusevski is doing his best to emulate his creative abilities this season, and so far, he’s doing a pretty good job of it.

Spurs may already have a bigger talent than Moore up their sleeve

The sensationally talented youngster could have a bright future at Spurs.
