Expectation is that CA as a business can absorb this – Matthew Mott

A postponement in moving Cricket Australia’s headquarters and a drastic cut down in travel may be among the measures the governing body will make to save cash in the time of coronavirus, while any decisions to reduce staff or salaries will be delayed as CA attempts to “absorb” the global pandemic within the business.CA has been compelled to look into a raft of saving measures to keep what cash the organisation can. This is over and above cash reserves that were around A$26 million entering the summer, augmented by the recent payment of rights fee instalments from Fox and Seven. CA had been planning to move its headquarters into rented office space while renovating its longtime headquarters in Jolimont, Melbourne, one of two large office properties the governing body can name as assets, alongside the A$29 million National Cricket Centre in Brisbane.Matthew Mott, coach of the T20 World Cup winning women’s side, said that while the message to all staff had been that CA would do its best to absorb the global suspension of sport to limit spreading of coronavirus, ways and means of becoming more efficient needed to be found in all departments of the organisation.”I can only go on the messaging we’ve had from our senior management, and this is an awful thing to happen to the whole of society, but in terms of timing we’ve been incredibly lucky,” Mott said. “We can shut down over Easter, we can shut down a few off-season programs. There will be huge financial implications, but timing wise if we were going to suffer something like this, the timing is not too bad.”We’ve been assured we’ve just got to make sure we come up with some really constructive feedback on how we can save some money going forward, but the expectation at the moment is that CA as a business can absorb this.”Obviously the longer it goes on, it’s going to put more pressure on everyone. I haven’t got a crystal ball, I don’t know how long this is going to last, nor does anyone, but in the short to medium term we’ve been assured that we’ve got enough equity and agility within the business to be able to absorb it, and we just need to be smart and pretty clinical about how we prepare and get our players ready.”In addition to having all staff work from home as of last week, CA will be able to find savings from a dramatic reduction in domestic and international travel, while the taking of paid annual leave among staff will be another option available to take cost off the governing body’s books. Mott was certain, however, that the women’s game would not be subject to cost-saving that might serve to stem the momentum that flowed from the World Cup and its technicolour finale, when Australia beat India in front of an 86,000-plus crowd at the MCG.”What we saw at the MCG just showed if you put the work in behind the scenes and you promote the game then the audience is there,” Mott said. “I think if anything the whole business is just going to have to be more efficient, and there’s going to be things that are cut out, it’s just the nature of where we’re at. I’m sure there’ll be input in both male and female programs about how we can get the best bang for our buck, and how we can be a lot more efficient. Everyone needs to work out what’s going to be the best for their programs, and how they’re going to make them run most efficiently.”It is a common lament among retired athletes that they never get the chance to stop, reflect and make balanced life decisions in the hurtling momentum of careers that last far less than half as long as those working regular jobs. Now, all of the world’s athletes will be taking stock, no matter where they sit on the road from rookie to veteran.”We’ve certainly put out messaging to our players, we’re going to have a break during this period here now, but often in those breaks you still think ‘I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do that’. Not just cricket but sport and the community, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on what’s important,” Mott said. “I think it’ll wear thin after a while, but I’ve absolutely loved being able to hang out with my family on the weekend, cook meals together and spend time together and just hang out.”There’s no pressure to be catching up with other people or stuff like that. I do think it is a great opportunity for everyone just to take stock, work out what’s really important in their lives, and just plan out what are the next steps. All these things have a funny way of happening for a reason. I think if you take a positive mindset towards them, you can really make them work for you.”I know there’s going to be people out there that are really struggling making ends meet, and it’s going to put a huge amount of financial pressure on a lot of people in our community and that’s incredibly sad, but there’s a lot of people also who can use this as a real positive driver to just work out what’s really important in your lives and make sure that when we get out of this situation, which we will, that we can really crystallise what’s important for us as a community and how we want to take ourselves forward.”Two players who were already looking at time for reflection were Ellyse Perry (torn hamstring) and Tayla Vlaeminck (foot stress fracture) who did not make it to the end of the World Cup campaign. Mott said that both were tracking to be fit to play within the normal timeframes for their respective injuries. Whether there will be any cricket to play yet by the time they are ready is another matter entirely. “It probably eases both their minds a little bit,” Mott said, “that they’re not missing out on as much as they would if we were over in South Africa.”

Leeds struck gold selling 90s star who’d be worth more than Phillips today

Leeds United have hit the jackpot many times over the years in regards to cashing in on players for significant fees, including Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips in recent times.

In the summer of 2022, former sporting director Victor Orta sold them both to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively, and the Whites were subsequently relegated at the end of that season.

The Cityzens swooped in to sign Phillips for an initial fee of £42m, with a further £3m in potential add-ons, which was a huge fee for a player who had come through the academy system and, therefore, did not cost Leeds a penny to sign.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

He is not the first player to come through the youth setup before being sold for a significant amount of money, though, as David Batty followed the same path during the 1990s, and was sold for more than Phillips if you adjust for the inflation of transfer fees in football.

David Batty's first spell at Leeds

The central midfielder came up through the U18s side to join the first-team during the late 1980s and helped the team to win promotion to the top-flight from the Second Division during the 1889/90 season.

His first year of top tier football came during the 1990/91 term, as the talented gem made 37 First Division (pre-Premier League) appearances.

Batty then played at least 30 top-flight matches in each of the following two seasons at Elland Road, winning the First Division title in 1991/92, including 30 in the inaugural Premier League campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the academy graduate was a crucial player for the club throughout the title-winning term, with 89.6 minutes played per game on average.

His fantastic performances for Leeds over the years convinced Blackburn Rovers to swoop in to secure his services for a mouth-watering fee in January 1994.

How much Blackburn paid for David Batty in 2024 money

As per Totally Money, Blackburn splashed out a fee of £3.4m to sign the combative central midfielder from the Yorkshire-based outfit ahead of the second half of the 1993/94 campaign.

If you adjust for the inflation of transfer fees in football, per Totally Money's index, over the subsequent years, that fee would have been worth a staggering £52.6m in today's money.

This shows that Batty's huge move to Ewood Park was more valuable to Leeds at the time than Phillips' £45m move to Manchester City was in 2022.

Former Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

It cost £0 for the Whites to sign the impressive star, given he came through the academy, and then they went on to sell him for a gigantic fee, relative to the time.

Batty then won the Premier League title with Blackburn during the 1994/95 campaign and went on to play for Newcastle before a return to Leeds in January 1999 for a fee of £5.7m – that would be worth £24.9m in today's money – and he ended his career at Elland Road.

The club, therefore, struck gold with the 1990s star as they made a huge amount of money on his services and enjoyed his talents during a top-flight title-winning campaign after bringing him through the youth teams.

Spurs have a sensational teen waiting in the wings to replace Son

Just over one week ago, Tottenham Hotspur brushed Aston Villa aside in a Premier League performance that might be the finest since Ange Postecoglou was appointed last summer.

Spurs' campaign has been characterised by inconsistency, though not quite so precipitously so as the 2022/23 season, where Antonio Conte was sacked and European qualification was left out of reach.

Spurs players Radu Dragusin and Yves Bissouma

Still, the recent 3-0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage was as bad as any since the Australian's arrival, a big blow in the race for top four.

Heung-min Son was a ghost against the Cottagers, but it's hard to dispute the South Korean as being anything other than an excellent captain since donning the armband last summer.

How Heung-min Son is performing as Spurs captain

Son joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen for about £22m back in 2015 and has since cemented his legacy as one of the Premier League's finest forwards of the modern era, even described as a "world-class player" by his manager earlier in the term.

As per FBref, Son ranks among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 12% for assists per 90 and the top 13% for pass completion, underlining his elite efficiency in the final third.

While he was ineffective against Fulham, taking two off-target shots and making just one key pass, the 31-year-old has been immense in the main, with 14 goals and eight assists from 24 starting appearances in the top-flight.

Moreover, the Spurs skipper has completed 84% of his passes and averaged 1.8 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, with his 17 big chances created surpassed only by Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

Such a dynamic talent is basically irreplaceable, but Tottenham might have an academy star in the ascendancy who could assume Son's role when the day of his departure arrives.

Damola Ajayi's season in numbers

The lad in question is Damola Ajayi, who is only 18 years old but has been in emphatic form this season, having posted 11 goals and seven assists across 20 appearances.

Principally a right-sided attacker but competent in a centre-forward role and at No. 10, Ajayi has made the leap to the Premier League 2 with great success after earning his stripes with the U18s, bagging three goals and three assists apiece from just three starts, recently netting a late winner as Wayne Burnett's squad beat Middlesbrough and ended a three-game winless run.

Not much has been said of this talented teenager yet but he is sharp and versatile with a quick turn of pace and elegance in his motions in the danger area.

While he will likely be a few years away from earning regular opportunities in Postecoglou's first-team, he might find the perfect partner in James Maddison, with the England international's remarkable playmaking ability serving chances on a platter, and with regularity.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Indeed, Maddison is currently averaging 2.5 key passes per game in the Premier League while completing 87% of his passes, proving that he can place passes for his surging teammates with first-rate precision and technical control.

Postecoglou must keep a close eye on this one, especially given Son's influence will not last forever. When the fated day of the South Korean's leave does arrive, then Ajayi might just be the goalscoring wideman to take the mantle and continue a resurgence that seems to be in its embryonic phase.

Celtic could repeat their Jota masterclass with swoop for "star"

The Celtic board have backed manager Brendan Rodgers in both transfer windows throughout the season so far to bolster his playing squad at Parkhead.

He was brought in to replace Australian manager Ange Postecoglou last summer, after he moved down south to the Premier League, and made nine new signings ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Nat Phillips, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Hyeok-kyu Kwon, Hyun-jun Yang, Luis Palma, Odin Thiago Holm, Marco Tilio, Maik Nawrocki, and Paulo Bernardo all came through the door during the summer.

These signings failed to start the season well, however, as Celtic were knocked out of the League Cup by Kilmarnock in August and dumped out of Europe as they finished bottom of their Champions League group during the first half of the campaign.

Brendan Rodgers.

Nicolas Kuhn was then snapped up from Austrian side Rapid Wien on a permanent deal in January, before Adam Idah arrived on loan from Norwich City on deadline day at the start of last month.

The Hoops boss is now already eyeing up another player to add to his group at the end of the season, as the club are reportedly keen on a Portuguese winger, who could be their next Jota – figuratively and literally.

Latest Celtic transfer news

According to HITC, the Scottish giants are among a clutch of clubs looking at a possible swoop to sign Vitoria Guimaraes forward Jota Silva this summer.

Rodgers is far from the only head coach keeping an eye on the Liga Portugal star as a number of Premier League and Championship teams are also showing an interest in him.

Southampton and Leicester City, who are currently competing to secure promotion to the top-flight, have been keeping tabs on the 24-year-old whiz.

Jota Silva

Meanwhile, Premier League sides Bournemouth, Brentford, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brighton & Hove Albion have also been monitoring his progress with Vitoria.

However, the report does not reveal whether or not any of the aforementioned clubs, including Celtic, are prepared to go in with a firm offer to acquire his services at this moment in time.

HITC also does not mention how much Vitoria would demand from any of the interested teams to cash in on their "star" – as per journalist Graeme Bailey – forward.

Therefore, whilst Rodgers is eyeing up the young attacker, it remains to be seen whether or not a deal for Jota Silva is a viable one for the Glasgow-based outfit at this moment in time.

If the Hoops can strike a deal to sign the Portugal international, though, then they could repeat the masterclass they played with the signing of his compatriot and namesake Jota back in 2021.

Celtic's Jota masterclass

Former Celtic boss Postecoglou swooped to sign the winger on loan from Benfica ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, and he hit the ground running at Parkhead with electric performances on the flank.

Jota racked up ten goals and ten assists in 29 appearances in the Scottish Premiership during his first season at the club, along with two goals and two assists in five Europa League outings.

In total, the young whiz produced 13 goals and 14 assists in 40 matches for the Hoops in all competitions, which convinced them to trigger their option to buy him for £6.5m.

As you can see in the table above, the Portuguese wizard continued his fine form in front of goal over to the 2022/23 campaign after Celtic snapped him up on a permanent deal.

Jota ended the season with a return of 15 goals and 12 assists in 43 games in all competitions for the Scottish giants, which took his tally to 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 outings for Postecoglou's team over his two years at the club.

His terrific displays on the wing in Scotland convinced Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad to swoop in to complete a staggering £25m deal for the magician, of which £7.5m went to Benfica – thanks to their sell-on clause as part of the move that sent him to Parkhead in 2022.

Celtic's former forward Jota.

This shows that Celtic played a masterclass with the signing of Jota from the Portuguese league as they had a superb player on the pitch who went on to make them a mouth-watering amount of money.

Why Celtic could repeat their masterclass with Jota Silva

The Hoops could now repeat that masterclass by returning to Liga Portugal to sign another exciting winger who could catch the eye in Glasgow – Jota Silva.

He has been in impressive form for Vitoria in his breakthrough season in the top-flight of football in his home country, and earned a debut for Portugal against Sweden this week.

Jota Silva

Jota Silva has showcased his quality as a scorer and a creator of goals throughout the 2023/24 campaign so far, with a return of 13 goals and seven assists in 32 matches in all competitions.

This has come after the young forward, who can play on either flank, produced four goals and four assists in 40 outings in all competitions last season for Vitoria.

So far this season, the 24-year-old phenomenon has plundered nine goals and five assists, to go along with six 'big chances' created, in 25 Liga Portugal clashes.

As you can see in the table above, Jota Silva is similar to the former Celtic star in the sense that they both score goals at a similar rate, both love to dribble past opponents to push their respective teams up the pitch, and can both create for others.

Like the current Al Ittihad whiz, the Vitoria maestro is also a right-footed forward who can be deployed out on the right or the left flank, and still cause chaos on either side.

Therefore, Rodgers could repeat the club's Jota masterclass by swooping for Jota Silva this summer, as the 5 foot 10 gem could be another Liga Portugal starlet who goes on to thrive in Scottish football.

The current interest from Premier League sides also suggests that there could be scope for the Hoops to sell him on for a profit, like they did with Jota, further down the line if he excels in Glasgow.

The West Ham star who was as bad as Phillips vs Nottingham Forest

West Ham United appear to be degenerating right before David Moyes' eyes, having lumbered to a 2-0 loss against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, with a poor patch in the Premier League now festering into something more serious.

Fortuitously, West Ham are only one point away from seventh place (Europa Conference League qualification) after Newcastle United could only draw at home to Bournemouth, but this should not detract from the desperate need for an upswing in form.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

This was certainly not last weekend's abject 6-0 drubbing inflicted by Arsenal at London Stadium, but Moyes has now watched his team fall to a third successive defeat, with a winless run now stretched to eight fixtures in all competitions.

Lucas Paqueta remains sidelined but United fielded a squad more than capable of weaving past the Tricky Trees, and while Kalvin Phillips was signed on loan from Manchester City in January, his woes very much continued yesterday.

Kalvin Phillips' game vs Nottingham Forest by numbers

Phillips, aged 28, is a cultured Premier League player and was instrumental in Leeds United's rise under Marcelo Bielsa, and while City tempted him with a £45m transfer in 2022, his time with the imperious champions has been anything but smooth.

Just two Premier League starts were not what the wide-eyed midfielder likely had in mind when he moved to Manchester, and with no sign that he would ever cement a starring spot under Pep Guardiola he made the move to West Ham last month.

A terrible start to life in the capital has compounded his problems, and while error-strewn efforts across recent matches have left Phillips hot under the collar, his second-half dismissal against Nottingham Forest is surely his lowest point so far.

As per Sofascore, the England international took 46 touches and completed 86% of his passes before seeing red, but he only won two of his six contested ground duels and committed three fouls.

Phillips was deservedly branded with a 3/10 match rating by the Evening Standard's Malik Ouzia, who wrote: 'Is having an incomprehensibly bad start to his loan spell. Sent off for two quick bookings to doom hopes of a comeback.'

Jarrod Bowen's performance vs Nottingham Forest

Back in his natural right flank role as Michail Antonio made his return to action after spending several months on the sidelines, fans might have expected to see Bowen perform in all his dynamic brilliance, having posted 14 goals and five assists in all competitions this term.

Bowen certainly wasn't left as shamefaced as Phillips but did only manage to grab a 5/10 match score, with Ouzia noting that he 'scuffed one chance straight at Matz Sels but otherwise struggled to get into the game,' after handing him a dismal 5/10 rating.

But with just 33 touches all afternoon, Bowen was largely on the periphery and actually had possession fewer times than his goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola, who made 35 touches.

Bowen also completed just 71% of his passes but at least he sought to make things happen, creating one key pass, though he failed with both of his crosses and his one attempted dribble.

Bowen's constancy in attack has been one of the biggest factors behind Moyes' success over recent years and he will click back into gear sooner rather than later, but it is concerning that the 27-year-old was unable to aid his club toward a vital victory at City Ground.

Ultimately, West Ham have much football yet to play this season and will start winning once again, but things need to change soon before European conversation fades to a nebulous din.

Twelve months of paid leave under Cricket Australia parental policy

The new policy includes three weeks leave for partners and support for children up to four to be brought on tour

Cricket Australia has launched a parental leave policy, which guarantees players who become pregnant 12 months of paid leave along with three weeks for partners and other support including additional funding for tours.CA and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) have been working on the policy for two years and it came into action earlier this year. Alongside 12 months of parental leave, players who fall pregnant will be guaranteed a contract extension for the following year. Other points include:Players who have a partner who gives birth will be entitled to three weeks paid leave upon the birth or adoption of a childAt any time after giving birth, the player can return to the game subject to medical clearanceTravel support for players who are primary carers including flights, accommodation and other applicable travel expenses for the child and a carer will be available until the child is four years of age.”Were a woman cricketer to become pregnant, it typically signalled the end of their career,” Alistair Nicholson, the chief executive of the ACA, said. “The travesty of this is that so many great athletes have not been given the chance to reach their true potential, denying the rest of us the opportunity to enjoy and admire their talent.”A key figure in bringing the policy together was former Australia player Clea Smith who is now general manager of member programs at the ACA.”This policy is the combination of three years of collaboration within Australian Cricket, the ACA and the players, and we’re delighted with the outcome,” she said. “This is a world-leading, player-centred policy providing balance in the lives of all players. The policy is designed to keep female players in the game for longer which will have a positive impact at all levels of the game.”Sarah Elliott, who scored a Test century against England in 2013 at the time she was breastfeeding her first child, was also consulted about the policy.”Probably the bit that jumps out is the support afterwards,” she told the . “It takes out that stress of who’s going to pay for flights, accommodation, transport and logistics. I felt like I was always causing trouble, kind of like a squeaky wheel and that everyone was tippy-toeing around me.”It was an uncomfortable space, whereas now that policy really lays it out clearly. The players and coaching staff know exactly what they can expect and everything is laid out.”There was controversy in 2016 when it was revealed that Cricket Australia asked female players to declare if they were pregnant when signing central contracts.Earlier this year New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite announced she was pregnant and would be taking time away from the game. Under NZC’s policies she will retain her central contract.

Mykhailo Mudryk to Arsenal takes fresh twist as Chelsea stance revealed

Arsenal could now have a fresh opportunity to sign Mykhailo Mudryk after eventually missing out on the forward to Chelsea in 2023.

Arsenal's serious chase for Muydrk explained

The north Londoners were in hot pursuit of Mudryk in January last year, with reliable news outlets like The Guardian even claiming Mudryk wanted to join and were in serious transfer talks.

Negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk were both lengthy and complicated, with London rivals Chelsea also chasing a multi-million-pound deal for the 23-year-old. While Arsenal had been in discussions for a while, their west capital rivals eventually beat them to Mudryk's signing by "offering a package with the type of appealing and achievable bonus payments that Shakhtar were demanding" (Charles Watts).

"Before Chelsea arrived in Turkey, we almost agreed with Arsenal that there was no chance to close (the deal)," said Shakhtar executive Sergei Palkin to The Athletic at the time.

"When they proposed the final offer of €70million plus €30million (in add-ons), we sat down and started to talk internally about how it will be fulfilled in terms of the payments, the fixed part and the bonus issues. We realised we will not close this deal (with Arsenal). I said to Edu that I did my best but it was not possible.

"When Chelsea arrived, they just called and said, ‘OK, we know you negotiated with Arsenal, we know you are close with some kind of figures. We want to meet’. I said, ‘OK, let’s meet’. I told Muydrk, ‘If I do not sell you in winter, we will definitely sell you in the summer’. I said, ‘Maybe you will cost even more in summertime’. We were ready to accept different scenarios. We would not be rushed."

Eventually, after hijacking Arsenal's deal for Mudryk, the Blues confirmed his signing for a Ukrainian-record £88.5 million.

However, fast-forward to now, and his stay at Stamford Bridge hasn't exactly been the stuff of legend just yet. This season, he's bagged three goals and two assists with the vast majority of his appearances coming off the bench. A far cry from how he burst on to the scene at Shakhtar, there are even reports that Chelsea could consider selling Mudryk already.

Arsenal emerging as main candidates for Mudryk

In a fresh twist, it appears as if Mikel Arteta could give the £100,000-per-week forward another chance to make an Emirates Stadium move.

Indeed, as per reports out of Spain, Chelsea's stance is they're contemplating a definitive sale or to loan the player out so he can rediscover his best form. In a surprise update, Arsenal are named as one of the "emerging" main candidates to sign Mudryk this summer.

It is unclear now as to where he would fit into the side, but the player's form at Shakhtar could be a clear indicator that Arsenal would land a pretty exciting player who could thrive under the right development.

He walked in with the score on 39 for 2 and watched the innings unravel to 127 for 6. But through it all, he stayed firm, hitting seven fours and two sixes, finally falling in the 40th over. At that time, Zimbabwe were 159 for 7 but Kyle Jarvis and Donald Tiripano hoisted them up over 200.
