A contribution from Graham Gooch has helped the PCA fund gambling awareness courses at all 18 first-class counties.Gooch, the former England captain, has run a scholarship scheme designed to encourage the development of young players for many years. It has, in the past, led to the likes of Alastair Cook spending time abroad to work on his game. But this year, to mark their 50th anniversary, the PCA appealed to its members – both current and former professional cricketers – for extra contributions to help them increase their annual funding from £400,000 to £600,000. Gooch responded by offering £50,000 from his scholarship fund with the proviso that it would be used for a specific project rather than split across several. The PCA suggested the gambling awareness scheme and Gooch agreed.”There are a lot of dangers in the world for young people now and I am particularly interested in helping out with the education of young cricketers with all the worries and concerns of online gambling and getting into bad habits,” Gooch said. “If we can educate people, make them aware of the pitfalls and get insight from people who have been down that route and fallen foul then hopefully they can be warned about the potential dangers.”Gooch’s donation helped the PCA fund not just courses – to be run by Paul Buck, whose gambling addiction resulted in a 32-month jail sentence of which he served 11-and-a-half months – but a helpline for those who feel they might be struggling with gambling addiction. The statistics are alarming. Gambling is the fastest growing offence in the UK that leads to a prison sentence – 1,444 custodial years over the last five years – and the fastest-growing addiction both in the UK and across the world. A recent study from Lincoln University suggests there are 1.1 million gambling addicts in the UK. Bankruptcy, divorce, depression and suicide are all common consequences. Gambling addiction has also been reclassified to full addiction status, the same as heroin, by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.Professional cricketers, with time on their hands and a relatively large amount of expendable income at a young age, are considered a high-risk category. That means they – or the young male ones, at least – are considered three times more likely to be “problem gamblers” than people in the general population. With one in four males between the ages of 18 and 24 “likely to have some form of gambling problem” according to PCA chief executive, David Leatherdale, it is, as he says, “definitely an issue.”The world has changed a great deal in recent years. Not so long ago, sporting events were sponsored by tobacco companies – the John Player Special League was the NatWest T20 Blast of its day – and cigarettes were distributed free of charge in press boxes. In 1994, for a bit of fun, the Warwickshire committee made an accumulator bet on their team winning all four domestic trophies. They ended up with three.Since those days, there has been a crackdown on tobacco advertising and some tightening of regulation as regards alcohol sponsorship and advertising, though the ECB retain several sponsorship deals with companies that sell alcohol. Most of all, there is greater awareness of the dangers of match-fixing and an absolute ban on players or officials betting on the sport. But gambling advertising has filled the void left by the departure of tobacco sponsorship. It has grown by 1,300 percent over the last decade with the growth in the use of smart phones making it easier than ever before. According to statistical survey data, eighty-seven percent of first-class players in England have gambled on some other form of sport in the last 12-months and 67 percent in the last month.Gambling is fully legal in the UK and there are no rules prohibiting cricketers from gambling on other sports. Buck says it is “normalised” to the extent that perimeter advertising at many sporting events offers in-game betting and, at a recent awareness session at a PCA rookie camp, 20 of 22 players admitted to having an online gambling account. It was the two who did not admit to having one that worried the people taking the session.”Personally I have never been a gambler,” Gooch continued. “But I do like going to a horse racing track and having a bet there. I’ve also hosted Ladbrokes in hospitality boxes at Test Matches so I don’t have any issues with gambling.”But sportsmen, in particular, do find themselves with time on their hands. When I played, people would go to a betting shop if they wanted to have a flutter. Now the temptation to bet online is great. In the social media world it’s very easy to get into that. You have to be very careful that it doesn’t consume you and cause major problems for you and your family down the line.”Both Buck and Leatherdale believe that cricket is “ahead of the game” in trying to prevent the problem growing. “Cricket is a long way ahead of the other sports we work with, football and rugby, in this regard,” says Buck. They hope that by showing young players where uncontrolled gambling can lead, they can shock them out of potentially bad habits. There will be practical help too. While no debts will be paid off, players will be given psychological help where appropriate and given assistance in restructuring their finances where possible. The key, though, is intervening before that stage is reached. And, thanks in part to Gooch, the PCA have a decent chance of achieving that aim.

Chelsea Could Land Broja Upgrade With "Scary" £86m Machine

Chelsea’s lack of goalscoring edge last season was their ultimate undoing across all competitions, but mainly in the Premier League.

They conceded 47 league goals, with only six teams conceding less, yet they managed to net just 38 times across 38 matches, with relegated duo Leeds United and Leicester City managing more, clearly showing where the problem lies at the club.

No player at the Stamford Bridge outfit netted more than ten goals while centre-forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Armando Broja scored just three goals and one goal respectively, albeit the latter missed 30 games last term having suffered a cruciate ligament rupture.

The Blues have been linked with Danish sensation Rasmus Hojlund recently according to the Evening Standard and he could cost in the region of £86m as Atalanta don’t want to let one of their prized assets leave unless a substantial offer is submitted.

There is no doubt Mauricio Pochettino needs an out-and-out striker ahead of next term and by signing Hojlund, they could be making a very shrewd investment, as he should only get better and better.

Could Rasmus Hojlund replace Armando Broja?

The Dane enjoyed somewhat of a breakthrough campaign during 2022/2023, for both club and country. He scored 16 club goals, adding in another seven assists for good measure, while the 20-year-old also netted five in just five matches for Denmark, including a stunning hattrick against Finland in March.

Could he, then, be an upgrade on Broja ahead of next season? Especially with Pochettino’s need for someone who is much more clinical in the opposition penalty area.

Last season, Hojlund registered more shots per 90 (2.58 to 1.84), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.75 to 1.22) and goals and assists per 90 (0.64 to 0.31) than Broja, clearly suggesting he could be a vast improvement to what the Argentinian currently has at his disposal.

Hojlund also managed to make 0.8 key passes per game and created one big chance, with Broja only making 0.1 key passes per game and failing to create a single big chance, albeit he played fewer matches.

Lauded as “scary quick” by journalist Sacha Pisani, his pace would clearly be another key feature of his game which could endear him to the Chelsea faithful.

Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund

The Danish sensation has also been dubbed as a “monster in the making” by talent scout Jacek Kulig and with his skills being on full display during his brief time in Serie A with Atalanta, Chelsea obviously feel that a move to the Premier League could take his game to the next level.

The Blues need to vastly improve their attacking output if they want to challenge for trophies next term. Signing Hojlund this summer would give them a major boost.

Chelsea Could Solve Problems By Signing £16k p/w Enforcer

Chelsea talks with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte have 'accelerated' at a swift speed ahead of the forthcoming transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Manuel Ugarte?

As per Football Insider, Chelsea have scouted Ugarte on several occasions and are said to be in the 'driving seat' to bring the Sporting Lisbon enforcer to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The report states that the Blues will meet his £52 million release clause, though they may try to formulate some sort of installment package to acquire Ugarte if it is a viable route to go down.

90min also detail Chelsea's interest in Ugarte and have claimed that Paris Saint-Germain also child a strong attraction towards the Uruguay international.

It is believed that bringing in a new midfielder has been a main priority for the Blues even before the arrival of new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Portuguese publication Record have indicated that Chelsea may be willing to include the services of young striker David Datro Fofana on loan to do a deal for Ugarte.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones has been taken aback by how quickly Chelsea's pursuit of Ugarte has progressed over the last few days.

Jones said: "It's certainly accelerated faster than I anticipated, to be honest. We'll now have to see how quickly it can continue to move forward and what the momentum is.

"We know Chelsea are interested, but the rate at which this has been moving forward makes me think that they're keen to get it done very quickly."

Would Manuel Ugarte be a good signing for Chelsea?

Ugarte has been in excellent form for Sporting Lisbon this term and would help to shore up Chelsea's midfield as they enter into a new era at Stamford Bridge with Pochettino at the helm.

In 2022/23, the £16k-a-week ace has featured 47 times in all competitions for his current employers, registering a solitary assist in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

manuel-ugarte-sporting-lisbon-transfer-liverpool-premier-league

WhoScored demonstrate that Ugarte is also an extremely safe presence in possession and has achieved a pass success rate of 91.6% this campaign in the Primeira Liga, something which could help Chelsea to dominate the ball for long spells in 2023/24.

FBRef also determine that the former Famalicao star fares well compared to his positional peers in Europe's eight divisions below the top five leagues on the continent in the art of number of players tackled, with Ugarte managing to successfully come out on top in 4.63 challenges per 90 minutes over the last 365 days, putting him in the first percentile for this metric.

With Chelsea needing a serious rebuild this summer, bringing in Ugarte could be a masterstroke of a signing in west London that could add some bite to Pochettino's engine room moving forward.

Journalist Reveals Man Utd Contract Talks For £34m-Rated Man

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are attempting to tie Diogo Dalot down to a fresh deal at Old Trafford.

Is Diogo Dalot staying at Manchester United?

The defender has been impressive this season for the Red Devils and has emerged as a key first-team player for the side in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag. With 25 league outings to his name, as well as a goal and two assists, he has arguably had his best season in a United shirt, if not his whole career.

He's been relied upon frequently on that right flank by Ten Hag and has made that position his own, having nailed down the position for the majority of the campaign. He also has the seventh-most appearances for the Red Devils over the course of the term ahead of the visit of Chelsea on Thursday.

Man United's Diogo Dalot

Now, it appears the club are hoping to convince him to extend his stay at Old Trafford for even longer. Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that United want to get a long-term deal for the player done.

He said: "Manchester United are advancing in talks to extend Diogo Dalot’s contract. Club plan remains to keep Dalot and get new long-term deal done. There’s confidence to reach agreement soon."

Are Man United selling Diogo Dalot?

It's understandable that Ten Hag would want to tie down Dalot, with the defender impressing many. Football journalist Josh Bunting admitted that the player is coming on "leaps and bounds", adding that he has been "brilliant".

The stats would back that claim up, too. This year, the player has managed a 6.97 WhoScored rating in the Premier League and produced a superb 7.27 score during his performances for Portugal at the World Cup, highlighting the consistency of his performances for club and country.

The right-back could cost any interested team €40m (£34m) based on his valuation from the CIES Football Observatory, and that isn't a terribly large amount in this day and age for a player who has grown in importance to United. It's therefore understandable that they would want to tie him to a new contract while increasing the fee they would fetch for the player if they did opt to sell him.

United have a talent on their hands with Dalot, and if they could tie him down to a longer deal with the club, it would be a shrewd piece of business.

Tottenham: £35m goalkeeper top target to replace Hugo Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur have made Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford their top target ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the latest on Tottenham’s interest in Jordan Pickford?

That’s according to Alan Nixon of The Sun, who reports that the England no.1 remains a priority to replace Hugo Lloris for the north London outfit despite him signing a new long-term deal at Goodison Park recently.

If the Toffees are relegated, there is an agreement that would see Pickford sold and whilst his value would be a lot lower as a Championship player, the Merseyside giants would still hold out for around £35m.

It’s also thought that Pickford would earn similar wages at Spurs to what he’s currently on, which is reported to be around £150k-per-week.

What is Hugo Lloris’ future at Spurs?

It’s increasingly apparent that Lloris’ days are numbered around N17.

After an 11-year stint between the sticks, the French veteran could finally be forced out of the club.

His 2023 has been littered with mistakes following heartbreak at the World Cup, registering more errors leading to a goal than any other player in the Premier League – and more than double any other goalkeeper, including Pickford (two).

Lloris spilt a long-range effort from Douglas Luiz to tee up Aston Villa to score, then blundered against arch-rivals Arsenal in the north London derby before flapping at a near-post strike from Riyad Mahrez to squander a two-goal lead against Manchester City.

Such exploits have led to a host of criticism, the latest coming from Birmingham City striker Troy Deeney, who claimed that ‘we know he is going to chuck a few goals in every season’ to The Sun.

Whilst the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick lambasted him as a “liability” earlier in the year, with the 36-year-old being described as “passed his sell-by date” by Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness too.

It’s no wonder that a move for Pickford has now become a likely possibility as the 29-year-old has long proved his credentials as a leading glovesman for club and country.

Once heralded as a “monster” by journalist Joe Crann, the energetic 6 foot 1 shot-stopper excels with the ball at his feet, ranking inside the top 6% of his positional peers across Europe’s ‘big five’ for launch and length of goal kicks per 90, as well as outranking Lloris for both saves and save percentage per 90, via FBref.

Whoever stands in the dugout next season must resolve the underperforming goalkeeping department and in Pickford, Tottenham could well find their next no.1 for the next few years.

£35m may seem like a pretty penny but considering the Gunners gambled around £30m on Aaron Ramsdale, it may actually prove to be a complete bargain in the end and clearly, a considerable upgrade on the £110k-per-week Lloris.

AND in other news, Could’ve cost £300k, now worth £70m: Spurs must rue not signing 12-cap “beast” in 2015…

Liverpool: Stewart could be Firmino’s heir

It was recently revealed that Liverpool centre-forward Roberto Firmino will be leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season.

The Brazil international will depart on a free transfer, after eight years at Anfield, and is set to leave after many seasons of exceptional service at the top end of the pitch.

Since joining in 2015, the attacker has plundered 108 goals and 79 assists in 354 matches in all competitions for the Reds – including 79 goals and 55 assists in 249 Premier League outings.

The 31-year-old, who has hit double figures for goals in four league campaigns, has been a regular contributor in the final third and has been rolling back the years with a stunning eight goals and four assists in 11 top-flight starts so far this season.

Who could replace Roberto Firmino at Liverpool?

Whilst the likes of Cody Gakpo, who has scored four goals in seven Premier League starts, and Darwin Nunez, who has eight in 15, have come in this season to potentially take over as regular starters in the front three, Liverpool may need to replace Firmino as a squad player in the summer.

The Brazilian has come on as a substitute in seven league matches this season and Jurgen Klopp could find the heir to the dynamo’s position in the side by unearthing U21 marksman Layton Stewart.

In the Premier League 2 this season, the youngster has produced an eye-catching eight goals and one assists in ten appearances – also scoring once in three EFL Trophy outings.

The 20-year-old, whose development was stunted by missing 48 matches with a knee injury between 2021 and 2022, made the jump to the U21s after enjoying an incredibly prolific spell with the U18s – scoring 26 goals and providing five assists in 22 league games from 2019/20 to 2020/21, which shows that the talent has the quality – like Firmino – to both score and assist goals for his side.

Academy coach Barry Lewtas recently hailed the former England U18 international as a “real threat” and the striker’s sensational statistics at U18 and U21 level back that up.

Stewart started the EFL Cup win over Derby County earlier this season and this suggests that Klopp already has faith in the youngster as the German coach was willing to name him in a first-team XI alongside the likes of Joe Gomez, Nat Phillips, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberain.

The Liverpool boss must now offer the prolific youngster, who has scored an impressive 42 goals and assisted seven in 55 youth appearances for the club, an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the senior squad after Firmino’s departure this summer.

Pre-season could be a huge chance for the talented marksman to show his worth and prove that he can translate his stunning form at youth level over to the first team. If Stewart can do that then Klopp may already have his dream heir to the Brazilian attacker, without having to dip into the transfer market.

Manchester City’s greatest signings of the Premier League era

Unless your name is Robinho, then you’ve probably enjoyed yourself after signing for Manchester City for big money. The Citizens love to splash the cash, and are one of the biggest spenders in Europe.

It’s no secret that a large part of their success is down to the transfers they have made since the takeover of Sheik Mansour. The likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker, and Ederson have all arrived for big fees, before going on to have the greatest success, winning trophy after trophy.

The spending hasn’t slowed down, either, with Erling Haaland headlining their summer arrivals.

Whether any of those arrivals have the same impact as the names listed below, we’re not sure, however.

10) Joe Hart

Before the years of Pep Guardiola and the need to be a ball-playing goalkeeper, Joe Hart was one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League.

Eventually a mainstay for Man City after first signing in 2006 from Shrewsbury Town, Hart went on to play a pivotal part in three Premier League title wins.

He was also regularly picked to keep goal for England, and was undoubtedly the best stopper in the league.

He eventually fell of a cliff in terms of his form, but at his best, Hart was immense between the sticks.

9) Pablo Zabaleta

Signed from Espanyol for £7.83 million in 2008, Pablo Zabaleta went from an unknown fullback to one of the best that the Premier League has had the pleasure of seeing.

The Argentine was a mix between the modern-day fullbacks we see and the old fashioned, more defensive versions that we once saw. And, with that hybrid style, came great success.

Zabaleta went on to spend nine years at the Etihad Stadium, winning two Premier League titles and the FA Cup.

One of the best defenders City have ever had.

8) Carlos Tevez

There was plenty of controversy when Tevez made the move to City.

He had spent two years at Manchester United, technically on loan from West Ham, but he left the Old Trafford club after rejecting their offer to turn his stay into a permanent deal.

As a result, he was snapped up by City, and went on to become an absolute hero in sky blue.

The Argentine finished his Man City career with 78 goals in 148 games, having picked up a Premier League medal along the way.

7) Fernandinho

It’s only now that he’s left Manchester City that people are beginning to realise just how good Fernandinho was during his time in the Premier League.

The defensive midfielder was the backbone to City’s success, especially under Pep Guardiola, having signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013 for £40 million.

He went on to become a first-team mainstay and hoovered up trophies in a truly elite team.

The Brazilian defied his years and was routinely the best defensive midfielder in the league.

6) Ederson

The signing of Ederson for £36 million signalled the real start of City dominance under Guardiola in 2017.

The former Barcelona manager finally had the ultimate ball-playing number one that he had been craving.

And, since then, we’ve seen exactly why Guardiola wanted the Brazilian, who has won three Golden Gloves in the last three seasons.

He can make world-class saves, and also has world-class distribution.

5) Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure doesn’t often get the credit he deserves for his time in the Premier League; people seem to forget just how good he was; just how dominant he was.

The midfielder is one of the best in his position that English football has seen, and cost City just £27 million in 2010 from Barcelona.

After arriving at the club, he went on to play 316 times for the club, scoring 79 goals and laying on 49 assists.

Oh, and he also won three Premier League titles.

4) David Silva

If elegance was a player, it would be David Silva.

The silky Spaniard was the epitome of class at Manchester City, and rightfully has his own statue outside of The Etihad.

Signed from Valencia for just £28.88 million in 2010, Silva goes down as one of the best bargains in Man City history, and one of the most successful signings.

He really set the tone for what was to come for the club.

3) Vincent Kompany

There is no doubt that Vincent Kompany is one of the best centre-backs in Premier League history, and one of the greatest signings of all time for Man City.

The Belgian was the ultimate leader, right up to his departure.

Having signed for the Citizens from Hamburg in 2010 for just £7.65 million, the former City captain quickly became a bargain.

And he’s now showing that he’s just as good a manager, as he’s flying with Burnley in the Championship.

2) Kevin de Bruyne

Now seems like a good opportunity to make this prediction, so here goes: By the time Kevin de Bruyne retires, he will be spoken about as the best midfielder to ever grace the Premier League.

He simply has it all, and goes down as one of the best signings in not only City’s history, but English football history.

The £68.4 million fee paid to Wolfsburg in 2015 now looks an absolute bargain.

De Bruyne was amazingly labelled a flop after arriving at City; those takes haven’t aged particularly well.

1) Sergio Aguero

Let’s face it, Sergio Aguero was always going to top this list, wasn’t he?

Even if that last gasp title-winning goal against Queens Park Rangers turned out to be his last goal for the club, it would have been enough to see him feature on this list.

It is the Premier League’s greatest, and most dramatic moment, scored by the greatest signing in Manchester City’s history.

With the signing of Haaland, this list may just need rewriting in two years or so. The former Borussia Dortmund striker is simply too good to end up disappointing. He is bound to succeed, especially under Guardiola, who could turn what is already a goal scoring machine into something out of this world.

Newcastle struck gold on Sean Longstaff

As Newcastle United gear themselves up for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final encounter with Manchester United, one man who will likely be feeling that mix of nerves and excitement more than most is academy graduate, Sean Longstaff, with the North Shields native hoping to help steer his boyhood club to long-awaited glory.

As the 25-year-old has himself admitted, he is simply “living the dream” at present under Magpies boss Eddie Howe, having shaken off a tough spell under former manager Steve Bruce to emerge as a leading figure for the resurgent outfit.

The local lad will almost certainly be handed a starting berth for this weekend’s highly-anticipated meeting at Wembley, with that involvement set to come just under five years on from the midfielder making his senior debut for the club in the competition back in August 2018.

That early impact under Rafa Benitez had seen the towering gem catch the eye of upcoming opponents, Man United, in the summer of 2019, albeit with the Red Devils ultimately walking away from any deal having baulked at the Tynesiders’ reported £50m asking price.

Despite that initial promise, though, the 5 foot 11 machine was subsequently restricted to something of a bit-part role in the years that followed, having never made more than 15 Premier League starts in a single season prior to the beginning of the current campaign.

That lack of action now appears a distant memory for the club’s “unsung hero”, however – as lauded by pundit Tam McManus – with the Englishman having already started 19 league games this season, proving influential in the club’s rampant run of form both in the top-flight and in the cup.

For all the expectancy that Newcastle would simply splash the cash following the change in ownership, it is a testament to the work of Howe that he has more than put his faith in those already at the club, with Longstaff one of the more obvious beneficiaries of the 45-year-old’s appointment.

How much is Longstaff worth?

The playmaker’s rise of late is illustrated by the fact that he is now set to be worth in the region of £16m, according to Football Transfers, with that a rather sizeable sum considering that the £50k-per-week man cost the club nothing to develop him in the youth ranks.

Not that the northeast side will be looking to cash in any time soon, however, with Longstaff currently blossoming in the centre of the park, having scored three goals and provided three assists in 30 games in all competitions this season.

Praised for being “absolutely everywhere” in the midfield by the aforementioned McManus, the one-time Blackpool loanee has showcased his defensive prowess by averaging 1.3 tackles per game in the league this season, while also offering a threat creatively as he laid on five big chances from his 23 top-flight outings.

The relentless gem’s most telling contribution this term, however, came during the semi-final triumph over Southampton last month to help steer his side to the showpiece, having netted twice in the second-leg victory at St James’ Park.

It would no doubt be fitting if Longstaff were to again prove the hero come Sunday, although no matter the outcome of that mouthwatering clash, Newcastle do appear to have struck gold by persisting with the youth product.
