Sam Northeast sets up Glamorgan's first win

Glamorgan claimed their first win of the 2024 Vitality Blast with a 25-run victory over Sussex in Cardiff, with Sam Northeast’s 61 not out enough to set up a winning target.Four wickets for Tymal Mills helped to restrict Glamorgan to 183 for 7 from their 20 overs but a solid Glamorgan bowling display, and a much improved effort in the field from their first match in this competition against Surrey, saw them defend the target.James Coles top scored for Sussex with a career-best 69 not out but he had little support from the rest of the Sussex batting line up.The star with the ball for Glamorgan was Mason Crane who finished with figures of 2 for 22 from his four overs as Sussex finished on 158 for 6.Regular wickets throughout the Glamorgan innings meant they had to fight to keep the scoring going, but significant contributions all down the order allowed them to post a competitive total. The home side’s powerplay brought 56 runs for the loss of two wickets with Chris Cooke and Northeast going well.Cooke was given a life on 21 when Dan Hughes slipped while attempting to take what should have been a straightforward catch off the bowling of Danny Lamb. Just as it looked as if Glamorgan would take full advantage of this mistake, Cooke was dismissed by Mills.A solid stand of 68 between Northeast and Colin Ingram seemed to be setting a platform for them to attack the Sussex bowling in the death overs. Two wickets in two balls from Mills pegged them back once again. The first was Ingram who was bowled off an inside edge, then Marnus Labuschagne was bowled next ball by one that beat him for pace.Mills had Dan Douthwaite caught by Oli Carter for 11 to take his second four-wicket haul of the competition so far.Northeast was there at the end, hitting the last ball of the innings for six to set Sussex a target of 184.Sussex started brightly thanks to an expensive over from Tom Bevan but two Sussex wickets inside the powerplay slowed them a little. A steady stand of 42 between Carter and Coles kept them in the contest. Carter was dismissed for 33 when he was caught by Eddie Byrom off the bowling of Ingram, although Glamorgan felt they had dismissed him in the previous over when a low catch from Tom Bevan was adjudicated to have not been taken cleanly by the umpires. As had been the case throughout the Glamorgan innings, regular wickets meant that there was always the need for an element of rebuilding and three quick wickets saw Sussex go from 73 for 2 to 85 for 5. Just at the point where Sussex needed to accelerate, Crane put the brakes on thanks to his excellent spell that did not concede a single boundary. The second of Crane’s wickets came from a fantastic boundary catch from Labuschagne that saw him toss the ball back into play to claim the wicket of John Simpson.Coles batted intelligently for his first fifty in T20 cricket, but with no support around him the required rate kept climbing. By the start of the 18th over Sussex needed 65 runs, a task that was too much for them as Glamorgan secured their first win of the season.

Hardik banned for MI's slow over rate, will miss first game next season

Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, has been banned for one match for his team’s slow over rate against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium. MI have already played their last match of IPL 2024, which means Hardik will miss the team’s first match next season. In case Hardik moves to another team for the next season, he will miss that particular team’s first game.It was the third time this IPL that MI failed to maintain a minimum over rate. As a result, Hardik, apart from the one-match ban, was fined INR 30 lakhs and the rest of the playing XII, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 12 lakhs or 50% of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.Related

It was a forgettable season for both MI and Hardik. The 18-run defeat to LSG meant MI finished with just four wins from their 14 games and finished at the bottom of the points table. Hardik, who had come in as a pre-season trade and had taken over captaincy from Rohit Sharma, was booed by the Wankhede crowd throughout the tournament. On the field, he scored 216 runs at an average of 18.00 and a strike rate of 143.04. With the ball, he took 11 wickets at an economy of 10.75.Mark Boucher, MI head coach, also admitted that the off-field noise might have “clouded” Hardik and played a part in the team’s “below-par” performance.

Narine, Raghuvanshi and Arora power demolition of Capitals

KKR handed Capitals a thrashing to make it three wins in three and go to the top of the table with a massive net run rate boost

Moody: ‘Raghuvanshi’s hands, bat path similar to Gill’

Last Wednesday at the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad set the record for the highest IPL score: 277. What should have been a once-in-a-decade effort was very nearly taken down by a marauding Kolkata Knight Riders batting unit tonight in Visakhapatnam. Sunil Narine plundered his personal best in T20s – 85 off 39 – almost home-grown Angkrish Raghuvanshi matched him with 54 off 27, and Andre Russell added the finishing touches with 41 off 19.A searing yorker from Ishant Sharma to get Russell in the last over prevented the record being broken, but the 272 KKR put up was more than enough to register a comfortable win – by 106 runs – and join Rajasthan Royals with three wins from three matches at the top of the table. In taking four wickets in the powerplay, two each for Vaibhav Arora and Mitchell Starc, KKR ticked another box in a season in which they have presented themselves as serious title contenders.Pant fined for slow over-rate again

Rishabh Pant, the Capitals captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate against KKR in their 106-run loss in Visakhapatnam. As it was Capitals’ second offence of the season – in just four matches – Pant was fined INR 24 lakh, while the rest of the members of the playing XII, were each fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever is lower.

Narine, Raghuvanshi hammer CapitalsKhaleel Ahmed and Ishant Sharma set Capitals’ win in the previous match in Vizag with swing early on. Here, though, probably because of Narine’s presence, both of them started slightly short of a length. The one ball that Khaleel pitched up swung to beat Narine. It seems ridiculous now but Narine took six balls to get off the mark. Capitals had managed to keep Narine quiet, but had they missed the small window of swing to try to get him out? Another chance would arrive soon to a short-of-a-length delivery, but neither Ishant Sharma nor Rishabh Pant heard the edge. No appeal, no review.Narine and Phil Salt had got down to work by then, but Capitals could still have got Narine for 24 off 13 had they listened to Mitchell Marsh and reviewed. Then again, reviews were not the only thing they were getting wrong. They kept offering Narine room, when they went short they didn’t get it high enough, and the ball had stopped swinging by now.Sunil Narine smacked seven fours and as many sixes in his 39-ball innings•AFP/Getty ImagesAnrich Nortje got rid of Salt in the fifth over, but Raghuvanshi, trained from the age of 11 by KKR’s own Abhishek Nayar, walked out and laced fours off the first two balls he faced. Mukesh Kumar is not express, but his injury has left DC with even less of a pace threat. Narine jumped on Rasikh Salam’s medium-pace in the last over of the powerplay, hitting him for three fours and a six to bring up his half-century in just 21 balls. Their 88 for 1 in the powerplay was the highest by any team so far at IPL 2024.The end of the powerplay brought DC relief only for one over, bowled by Sumit Kumar, but Narine ended any threats of variations in the attack by hitting two sixes off Axar Patel, who wouldn’t bowl again. Raghuvanshi matched him with a reverse-pull over short third for a six. Their 135 for 1 was the third-highest 10-over score in the IPL – all three have come this season.Wickets fail to slow KKR downEventually it was the short ball from Marsh that got the better of Narine, but it wasn’t just one short ball. He kept bowling short and wide outside off with changes of pace. Narine still ended with a boundary every two-and-a-half balls, and the wicket came too late anyway. The 13th over was the right point of entry for Russell, and he punished the samey attack. Capitals didn’t go back to spin despite right-hand batters at the wicket, and Nortje was the only one who presented the batters with an inbuilt challenge.Andre Russell and Rinku Singh smashed 32 runs off 11 balls for the fifth wicket•AFP/Getty ImagesRussell was too good for the rest, and when Nortje started the 19th over with one fewer fielder on the fence because of a poor over-rate, Rinku Singh got stuck into him, taking 25 off the over.Ishant then produced a beauty that drew an applause from Russell himself and prevented Capitals from ending up on the wrong side of the record.Arora announces himselfOne of the two tall domestic fast bowlers in the KKR stable, Arora came on as the Impact Player and found inswing immediately. It wasn’t just swing, though. He mixed it up with accurate bouncers. Prithvi Shaw fell to the inswinger before Abhishek Porel top-edged a bouncer.Vaibhav Arora took 3 for 27 in KKR’s clinical win•BCCIAt the other end, Starc took care of his Australia team-mates, Marsh caught trying to square-drive and Warner playing on immediately after slogging him for a six. These were his first wickets this IPL after his eight overs in the first two matches had gone for 100 runs.At 33 for 4 in the fifth over, even batting for net run rate would need heavy hitting and risks. For a while Pant and Tristan Stubbs managed to score quickly. Pant was especially pleasing as he continues his return from a life-threatening accident, but their fifties were never going to be enough to deny KKR a third consecutive win – the first time they have started a season with three wins in three in their history.

Rafael Leao hints at decision on AC Milan future stay as winger names his 'dream' club amid Arsenal and Bayern Munich links

Leao appeared on a Q&A on TikTok, where he was asked which club he dreams of playing for. His answer: “I already play in one of my dream teams. Milano! Milano! Milan is one of my dream clubs,” served as a strong signal amid growing speculation about a transfer to Bayern or Arsenal.

The Portuguese winger’s comments come at a key moment, with Milan’s pre-season beginning under new head coach Allegri and transfer rumours swirling. While Bayern were reportedly keen, with internal discussions about a potential move, Leao’s public stance has temporarily cooled the exit talk.

Leao’s declaration appears to align with Milan’s internal direction under Allegri, who has reportedly already spoken to the player and views him as a central figure in his tactical rebuild. Despite financial concerns at the club, Milan seem determined to hold onto their stars.

The winger has long been a fan favourite and one of the club's top performers, and his bond with Milan could be vital in navigating a difficult season ahead. Market-wise, Milan are still open to offers, but only if they exceed €80m (£67m/$86.2m). Bayern, while still admirers, have now shifted their focus to Nico Williams and Bradley Barcola.

Unless a huge bid materialises, Leao looks set to stay at San Siro to become a cornerstone of Allegri’s new Milan. The Portuguese international is expected to feature prominently in pre-season and could even take on a leadership role in a young, reshaped squad. Leao’s form and commitment in the opening months of the season will now be critical in silencing the remaining transfer noise, and in pushing Milan back toward the top of Serie A.

Sky Sports: Coventry & Lampard join race for "excellent" Europa League star

Setting their sights on summer reinforcements, Coventry City and Frank Lampard have now reportedly joined the race to sign a Europa League defender alongside a number of Championship rivals.

Coventry looking to win Championship transfer race

Coventry have emerged to become one of the surprise packages of the season under Lampard. When they sacked Mark Robins in favour of hiring the former Premier League midfielder who struggled in charge of Chelsea, Everton and Derby County, the decision unsurprisingly stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Four months into his tenure, however, Lampard has proved the doubters wrong.

A recent 2-0 defeat against Derby County may have ended an impressive run, but Coventry still have their sights set on a shock play-off place with just nine games left to play in the Championship.

Away from the action, meanwhile, those behind the seasons at the Sky Blues have reportedly turned their attention towards the transfer window. According to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Coventry have now joined the race to sign Tyrese Asante from Maccabi Tel Aviv this summer following the defender’s impressive season.

Featuring in both Champions League qualification and the Europa League throughout the current campaign, it’s no surprise that Coventry have been joined by the likes of Hul City and Cardiff City in pursuit of Asante.

Tyrese Asante for Tel Aviv against Ajax.

Of course, given their current position in the top six, Coventry’s transfer plan could yet receive a major boost if they earn a place in the play-offs and then secure shock promotion.

"Excellent" Asante could commence Coventry rise

If promotion doesn’t happen this season, then Coventry’s form ever since Lampard’s arrivals suggests that they’ll be ones to watch next season, especially if Asante arrives. A defender capable of playing European football, there’s no doubt that the 22-year-old would be an impressive coup for the Sky Blues as they potentially build towards the Premier League.

Praised for his “excellent” numbers and “strong” passing by football consultant Kai Watson in February, the Dutch defender is only just getting started at 22 years old and a move to Coventry would only accelerate his potential.

Lampard got a taste for the incomings that he could welcome at Coventry in January, signing Matt Grimes and Jamie Patterson. Now, when the summer arrives, he could receive his best addition yet in the form of a defender full of talent in Asante.

Changes are being made in Amsterdam on the back of an agonising end to the 2024-25 campaign. Ajax appeared to be on course to reclaim the Eredivisie title with a few matches of the season remaining, but a dip in form arrived at the worst possible time.

A four-game winless run, that delivered just two points, meant that Ajax headed into the final day requiring favours from elsewhere. They did not arrive, with Henderson’s first goal for the club not enough to see them overhaul PSV at the summit.

DID YOU KNOW?

After squandering a nine-point lead, Italian coach Farioli has decided to walk away after just one year at the Johan Cruyff Arena. He has faced plenty of uncomfortable questions, with title pain in the Netherlands leaving him in tears, but Henderson has been quick to salute his efforts in a difficult role.

“Not everyone from the outside will appreciate or even understand what we all had to go through this season to achieve what we did, but you kept everyone together and wanting to fight for each other right till the very end.

“It was an absolute pleasure to work with you and your staff over the last year and I know this is only the beginning of your journey! I look forward to seeing you standing on the touchline once again showing everyone what a great coach and man you are, I just hope they appreciate and show you the respect you deserve. Thank you and good luck Gaffa!”

Trent Alexander-Arnold has tarnished his Liverpool legacy by leaving for Real Madrid to pursue a Ballon d'Or he's never going to win

The Reds' academy product has announced his intention leave Merseyside this summer, provoking understandable anger at Anfield

It's finally official, then: Trent Alexander-Arnold is leaving Liverpool, most likely for Real Madrid. Some fans are frustrated, others are fuming; none are surprised, though. It's been coming.

Alexander-Arnold has long been Liverpool's 'Scouser in the team', the local lad whose dream came true. He was both desperate and destined to captain the club he joined at six years of age. However, at some point during the past year or so, something changed. Maybe it was Jurgen Klopp's exit – the impact of which hit Alexander-Arnold even harder than he expected – or maybe he just wanted a fresh challenge.

Whatever the cause, the consequence was a dramatic shift in perspective that will result in the Reds losing one of their most valuable assets for nothing, which means a bitter backlash is inevitable – and not just towards the player…

AFP'Don't play the game, change the game'

During an interview with last October, Alexander-Arnold was asked about his remaining career goals and whether he would rather win another Champions League, become Liverpool captain, lift a trophy with England or win the Ballon d'Or. After a little bit of deliberation, he chose the latter.

"[I want to be] a legend of football, someone who changed the game," he explained. "A saying I have is 'Don't play the game, change the game.' I want that legacy of being probably the greatest right-back ever to play football, to be honest.

"It's only the morning after you retire that you're able to look at yourself in the mirror and say you've given it everything you have got. It doesn't matter how many trophies you win or medals you have got. It matters what you have given to the game and if you reach your full potential. I've heard potential being thrown around with my name since the age of six. If you reach that potential and become the player you believe you can be, which is one of the best ever, then you'll be happy. It doesn't matter how many trophies you win, I guess."

It was at that moment that it became abundantly clear that Alexander-Arnold was bound for Santiago Bernabeu. His focus had very clearly shifted from becoming a Liverpool legend to securing superstar status with Madrid.

AdvertisementAFPMadrid's obsession

Madrid will certainly offer Alexander-Arnold a better shot at winning the Ballon d'Or than Liverpool. Los Blancos are the biggest and best club in the world; they've won more than twice as many European Cups as anyone else. Perhaps most importantly of all, though, they take the Ballon d'Or very seriously. Too seriously, in truth.

Madrid were so incensed by Rodri claiming a narrow victory over Vinicius Jr in last year's vote that they made the embarrassingly petty decision to boycott the ceremony, which not only demonstrated the Spanish side's unrivalled sense of entitlement – but also underlined just how much undue importance they attach to a meaningless individual accolade within a team sport.

However, it's still extremely difficult to see Alexander-Arnold having any chance of actually being voted the best player in the world – even with the support of the incredibly powerful Florentino Perez. Just proving himself the best player at Madrid will be tough enough, as he'll somehow have to outperform Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius for an entire year – from right-back.

A defender's not won the award for nearly two decades (Fabio Cannavaro in 2006), so even accounting for the greater importance of full-backs in the modern game, it would take a truly extraordinary campaign to even put Alexander-Arnold in the mix. Remember, the wonderfully consistent Dani Carvajal won both the Champions League and the European Championship last year – and that twin-triumph wasn't enough to even earn the Spaniard a place on the podium.

In that sense, Didi Hamann has a point when he says, "If winning the Ballon d'Or is the reason that he wants to join Real Madrid, he should forget it and stay at Liverpool!"

AFPLegacy tarnished

In fairness to Alexander-Arnold, he's acutely aware that most people will deem him "deluded" for believing he can win the Ballon d'Or, but that's also kind of missing the point. In his mind, it's not really about whether he lifts the trophy or not, it's about putting himself in the best possible position to do so – and he feels moving to Madrid is key in that regard.

It certainly won't hurt his chances, of course, but the transfer will tarnish his Liverpool legacy. There's just no getting away from that fact.

Although attempts have already been made online to diminish or even erase Alexander-Arnold's role in Liverpool's success under Klopp, his key contribution will never be forgotten. He'll forever be a part of Anfield lore for quickly-taken corner alone.

Klopp even considers the academy product the most significant addition made to his squad during his nine years in charge – which is some compliment, given Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Fabinho and countless other great players were signed on the German's watch.

AFPNo chance of a fond farewell

Of course, Alexander-Arnold's prominent part in one of the most exciting eras in the club's history only makes his imminent departure all the more unpalatable. Some of his fellow fans have already accused him of betraying his childhood club, which upset former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock.

"Can't believe the negativity directed towards Trent Alexander-Arnold… Comments like 'He should be shamed' and 'He's not loyal' are deluded. He's entitled to make his own choices and challenge himself in a different league and different country," Warnock wrote on Twitter. "He's won everything with LFC, been an incredible servant to the club and should be given a great send-off by the fans."

There's just no chance of that happening, though; Alexander-Arnold's exit is too emotive. Because he's not just leaving Liverpool, he's departing on a free transfer.

Jamie Carragher has tried to downplay the significance of Liverpool losing Alexander-Arnold for nothing by pointing out that he didn't cost the club a penny – but that only makes it worse from a financial point of view, given the increased importance of making pure profit on homegrown players in the current economic climate.

The money raised from a sale last summer could have been put towards buying a replacement (which will be costly) or strengthening the squad elsewhere if the belief is that Conor Bradley is ready to fill the void at right-back.
