Liverpool fans pay tribute to Lucas Leiva on Twitter 11 years on from his debut

Liverpool fans are rightly celebrating what has been a fantastic start to the season so far. They’re one of only a few teams to currently be maintaining a 100% record in the English top flight, with a number of Anfield regulars impressing at present.

However, today (Tuesday), Liverpool fans are also celebrating something else – the anniversary of Lucas Leiva’s Liverpool debut. The Reds have been celebrating the news online on their official Twitter page.

Lucas Leiva joined Liverpool back in 2007, and he went on to make nearly 250 league appearances. Mainly playing through the midfield, he regularly put in solid performances, and though his injury record is spotty at best, he’s gone down as a bit of a cult figure at Anfield among fans.  He regularly played more than 20 league games per season for the Reds, and that’s a testament to his importance over the years.

In response to Liverpool’s message of support to Lucas, many fans have responded in kind, with plenty of them proclaiming their love for the Brazilian. It’s fair to say that he’s still very popular among fans.

Take a look at what they’ve had to say below…

Rangers fans heap praise on Murphy after injury update

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to an injury update from Jamie Murphy, as the popular winger underwent successful knee surgery this week.

Rangers fans were furious when Murphy injured his ACL during the recent win at Kilmarnock, and who can blame them?

The 29 year-old has become hugely popular during his short stint at Ibrox so far, joining the club on loan in January before making the move permanent this summer.

Murphy has scored four times in 20 Premiership appearances, and was already looking like he could be a key part of Steven Gerrard’s side before the injury.

The winger has now updated fans on his official Twitter account, saying the operation was a success.

He is still expected to be out for the season, but it’s already clear from his positive mind-set that he will not let the injury damage his career, as knee injuries often do.

Opinion: Caulker is the only free agent Celtic should be looking at

Free agent Gabby Agbonlahor sparked transfer rumours this weekend when he said he would love to play for Celtic, but the Hoops should be on the lookout for a different free signing – Steven Caulker.

[ad_pod ]

What’s the word?

Agbonlahor issued a “come and get me” plea after taking part in the charity match at Celtic Park this weekend, saying he would love to play for the Hoops.

If Celtic are going to dip into the market for a free agent though, it shouldn’t be a 31 year-old striker with limited use left in him. It should instead be Caulker, who would arrive with a point to prove.

The 26 year-old was extremely highly rated when he broke through at Tottenham, but a mixture of injuries and poor form have damaged his reputation.

He is now a free agent after leaving Dundee earlier this summer, and his physical presence could be just what Celtic are lacking in defence.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”290059″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FFC Accy Show Put the international break to good use”]

Why would he be a good signing?

While Moussa Dembele leaving has left a gaping void at the striker position, most Celtic fans would agree their top transfer priority is in defence. Filip Benkovic joined on deadline day on a temporary deal, but the Hoops still don’t have that dominant commanding presence at the back that every team needs.

Kristoffer Ajer has shown moments of real potential, but the young Norwegian isn’t a leader, and neither is Benkovic. A move for Caulker makes perfect sense, as the Hoops would then have a mixture of youth, experience, speed, size and ball-playing ability in their defensive ranks.

Standing at 6 ft 3 in tall, Caulker is an absolute beast in the air, and could be the perfect partner to guide Ajer through the season. He has one England cap to his name, and played 14 Premiership games for Dundee last season, scoring once.

The 26 year-old has experience both in European competition and now in Scottish football, and could turn the Hoops underwhelming window into a satisfactory one.

So, Celtic fans, would you like to see Caulker signed for free? Are there any other free agents you think you should sign? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Some Newcastle fans are right to be critical of Benitez’s substitutions on Saturday

Newcastle supporters have been drowning their sorrows in recent times after seeing their side slip to a third successive Premier League defeat on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their encounter with Arsenal off the back of losses at the hands of Chelsea and Manchester City, which added to their opening day defeat to Tottenham left the Magpies with just one point, a 0-0 draw at Cardiff City, from their first four games. And they remain without a win this season as goals from Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil set Unai Emery’s Gunners on their way to all three points, as although Ciaran Clark got one back for the hosts late on, it wasn’t enough to deny the North Londoners a third consecutive victory.

Thus, there have been many disappointed and frustrated Newcastle fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have taken to Twitter to criticise manager Benitez for his substitutions against the Gunners, what with Jonjo Shelvey and Salomon Rondon left on the bench by the Spaniard.

And while Newcastle fans have on the whole been pretty supportive of the former Chelsea and Real Madrid during his time on Tyneside, they are absolutely spot on to suggest that he got those key decisions badly wrong at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Ultimately, Benitez was bold in his team selection in making four changes to the side that lost at champions City last time out, and the efforts of Joselu in leading from the front as well as those from Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie down the flanks certainly gave the home fans hope in the first half.

Yet as Arsenal grew into the contest, and subsequently took the lead four minutes after the break, the onus was surely on the Newcastle boss to tweak things to give his side more control and a greater threat in the attacking third of the pitch – yet to take Murphy and Ritchie off, arguably their two brightest sparks, seemed a somewhat strange decision.

The midfield duo of Mo Diame and Isaac Hayden really struggled in the second half to suggest that the introduction of Shelvey may have been a shrewder move from Benitez, not just to give greater strength in that department, but also given that the England international is much better on the ball than the aforementioned pair – and against an Arsenal side that have looked vulnerable defensively this term, he could have unpicked the lock.

And Joselu certainly tired as the encounter went on to suggest that bringing Rondon on, another physical presence who can hold the ball up and provide an aerial threat from set plays, could have proved beneficial in helping to bully the tiring Arsenal centre backs – yet Benitez opted for neither.

In fact, his substitutions, one of which somewhat forced following the injury to Jamaal Lascelles, proved to be hugely ineffective with neither Kenedy nor Yoshinori Muto having much of an impact on proceedings – and when that happens, it brings into greater focus those he decided against bringing on.

And against one of the better sides in the division, Newcastle fans would likely have wanted to see two of their team’s better players in Shelvey and Rondon on the pitch on Saturday, especially as the chance was there for them to get something out of the encounter – if, as has been suggested, they were slightly injured or lacking in match sharpness, why have them on the bench in the first place?

Thus, while Magpies fans have generally been very supportive of Benitez, those who have criticised his decision-making regarding his substitutions on Saturday are absolutely right to do so.

Arsenal fans react to another Wilshere injury

Arsenal fans waved goodbye to a fan favourite in the summer as Jack Wilshere left the Gunners to join West Ham on a free transfer.

Wilshere rose through the academy in North London to become a first-team favourite at the Emirates Stadium but his career with Arsenal was heavily affected by injury issues, which eventually played a key part in his exit.

At West Ham, Wilshere started to enjoy a new lease of life after featuring for Manuel Pellegrini’s side in each of the opening four games of the Premier League season, though he experienced defeat in all of those matches and has since been hit with another injury blow.

Wilshere missed Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Everton and it has now been confirmed that the England international has undergone surgery, which leaves the 26-year-old set for another six-week spell on the sidelines.

Arsenal fans on social media have had their say on the news and we have gathered some of the best reactions below.

Wilfried Zaha fitness problems should worry Crystal Palace fans going forward

After enduring a tough relegation fighting campaign last year, Crystal Palace needed to strengthen over the summer in order not to replicate that terrible campaign this year.

Despite that, Palace only brought in four new players in Jordan Ayew, Vicente Guaita, Cheikhou Kouyate and Max Meyer during the transfer window and look like they could well be fighting relegation again this season. The south London club has only won two games this season and were held to a draw by Newcastle United in what was an incredibly drab game.

As is well reported, Palace are incredibly reliant on star man Wilfred Zaha who has scored three of the club’s four goals this season but was unable to get on the scoresheet yesterday and according to Roy Hodgson, the talented winger suffered a back problem in the pre-match warm-up yesterday and was not completely fit.

The Breakdown

The update should be worrying news for Crystal Palace fans ahead of their game against Bournemouth next weekend. While he did manage to play the game, it was quite clear that the Ivory Coast international wasn’t at his best and couldn’t help his team to win their first home game of the season.

Without Zaha, Palace pose no real attacking threat going forward and can’t rely on Andros Townsend or Christian Benteke to score their goals. Indeed, the latter seems completely unable to score and is seemingly shot of all confidence in front of goal.

Middlesbrough fans fume at the club’s failure to grasp top spot

Middlesbrough’s campaign for Premier League promotion is on course, but they suffered a blip on Saturday.

Tony Pulis’s side have been in and around the top echelons of the Championship table for the past few weeks due to their results.

In 10 matches, Boro have been on the losing side just once, but they squandered the opportunity to move to the top of the table on Saturday afternoon.

Pulis took his team to the KCOM Stadium to take on a Hull City side that are lingering around the bottom three of the standings.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”301458″ player=”12034″ title=”The Problem With Paul Pogba”]

Boro were favourites heading into the encounter despite being on away soil and they managed to go ahead thanks to a 51st-minute goal from Britt Assombalonga.

Hull drew level, though, thanks to a penalty from Jarrod Bowen and the visitors were unable to regain their lead.

After the final whistle, a handful of Boro fans took to Twitter to lambast the team for failing to move to the top.

As it stands, the club are third in the table, one point adrift of leaders West Bromwich Albion.

Ideal Morata replacement: 75% of polled Chelsea fans view Krzysztof Piatek as perfect new forward

Chelsea’s attack has been a problem all season long, and so far, neither Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata have shown any sign that they’re going to be the players to sort things out.

Clearly, then, if Maurizio Sarri is going to achieve the goals that he’ll likely have at Stamford Bridge, namely a Premier League title challenge, he’s going to need to find a new striker that the club can rely on.

We recently asked fans whether Polish forward Krzysztof Piatek would be a good choice. The attacker has already bagged over 10 goals this season, and he’s impressed in front of goal. He bagged 4 goals in just 1 game in the Coppa Italia earlier this season.

Naturally, then, he clearly knows where the net is, and some Chelsea fans clearly think that he’d be a good fit. In response to our poll asking whether he’d be a good signing, a whopping 75% of polled Chelsea fans have revealed that they think he would be an ideal replacement for Alvaro Morata in the Chelsea attack.

For all of his ability on the ball, Morata simply hasn’t been able to find the net enough as of late, and that’s in stark contrast to Piatek. For Chelsea, then, the Genoa man may be a good choice.

At just 23-years-old, he’s only going to get better, and whilst he’s still inexperienced, he’s done everything right thus far. Time will, tell, though, if Chelsea fans get what they want.

Liverpool fans want to see Virgil van Dijk as club captain after his goal vs Germany

In Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson, Liverpool have two international captains in their starting back four, but it was the Dutchman who Reds fans wanted to see as their club captain after his goal helped the Netherlands to a 3-0 win over Germany.

The 27-year-old was named as his country’s captain by Ronald Koeman in March this year and has since scored twice, with both goals coming in impressive wins over Portugal and this against Germany. On Saturday, van Dijk opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after former Liverpool man Ryan Babel headed against the crossbar and the centre-back was there to nod the rebound into the almost empty net.

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay and van Dijk’s fellow Liverpool man Georginio Wijnaldum wrapped up the Nations League win late on for the Dutch, and many Liverpool fans were keen to see van Dijk take over the club captaincy from Jordan Henderson after his performance. Check out the best tweets below.

So, Liverpool fans, would you have van Dijk as club-captain or should it stay with Jordan Henderson? Have your say by voting in the poll below.

Addition of Antonio Valencia would finally give Southampton’s Cedric something to think about

According to a recent report from The Sun, defender Antonio Valencia could be set for a move away in the near future. The right back currently plays his football in the North West with Premier League giants Manchester United having made the move there back in 2009, in which time the 33-year-old has gone on to help the Red Devils win two Premier League titles.

Yet reports suggest that as per a clause in his current contract, which ends at the conclusion of the season, Valencia will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club as early as March, and that should be of interest to Southampton manager Mark Hughes as he seeks to finally give right back Cedric Soares something to think about.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, Portugal international Cedric made the move to St Mary’s back in 2015 as a direct replacement for Nathaniel Clyne, who left for Liverpool that summer, and the 27-year-old has on the whole done a fine job down the right-hand-side for the South Coast outfit.

He has appeared 106 times for the Saints in the last three years or so and has been a regular in each of their past three Premier League seasons, with the lack of other options in the right back department giving Cedric a relatively easy ride in maintaining his starting role.

And while in the first few seasons the 27-year-old certainly deserved to keep his place with several impressive displays at right back, he wasn’t as consistent and as accomplished last season as Hughes’ men struggled to a 17th place finish – but the lack of competition at right back meant Cedric went on to play 32 times in the Premier League for the Saints.

Thus, one wonders whether the Euro 2016 World Cup winner is suffering from a lack of competition in that department, which is why Hughes should seek to raid United for right back Valencia, in a bid to give 27-year-old Cedric something to think about.

33-year-old Valencia may well be entering the twilight of his career but he still remains a hugely adept right back at Premier League level, earning 335 appearances in all competitions for United in the last nine years, helping them to two league titles as well as a whole host of other trophies.

In fact, the Ecuador international won the club’s Player of the Season award back in 2012 and has been named captain on a regular basis in the last few years to underline his influence on this United team – and in a backline that shipped just 28 goals in the league last term, he’s clearly doing something right.

And with ability offensively in taking defenders on and getting a cross in, alongside adeptness defensively in possessing the pace and strength needed to get the better of opposition wingers, Valencia could prove to be a huge asset to Southampton manager Hughes, both in terms of boosting that area of his squad, as well as giving Cedric something else to think about.

The Portuguese star hasn’t necessarily been at his best in the last 12 months or so, but Valencia’s arrival would surely force him to re-discover that form, as failure to do so would see him fall out of the starting eleven.

As such, Hughes should seek to lure the £7.2 million-rated United man (as per Transfermarkt) to the South Coast outfit in a bid to finally give Cedric something to think about.
