Nuno must now finally ditch West Ham man who's "national league standard"

It is still only October, and it already feels as if the wheels have come off at West Ham United.

The East Londoners are currently in the relegation zone and only being kept off the bottom of the table by an even worse Wolverhampton Wanderers side.

Worse yet, any of the positivity that came from the draw away to Everton in Nuno Espírito Santo’s first game has all but vanished thanks to three consecutive defeats.

Therefore, if the Portuguese coach is to save the Hammer’s Premier League status this season, he needs to make some changes to the team as soon as possible, such as dropping someone who looks miles off the pace.

Changes that Nuno has to make to West Ham

Given the dire situation West Ham currently find themselves in, Nuno has to make some dramatic changes to the team for the next game, and that starts at the back.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Both Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman must come out of the team, as even though the other options are less than ideal, they have a chance of being better than the Frenchman and Englishman, who have been diabolical for a few games now.

Then, with Ollie Scarles recovering from his dislocated shoulder, the manager should move Kyle Walker-Peters to that right wing-back role if he insists on keeping the shape he used against Leeds on the weekend.

Moreover, while he’s been a brilliant servant to the club, Tomáš Souček now offers little to nothing when he starts, and therefore, he should be dropped to the bench for the far more dynamic and promising Soungoutou Magassa.

Moving on to the attack, and the experiment of player Lucas Paqueta up top has to come to an end.

Yes, Callum Wilson is not of the standard either, but by playing the team’s most creative player as a false nine, the chance creation from deep is practically non-existent.

Ideally, Nuno should revert to a four at the back system and play the Brazilian in attacking midfield.

Last but not least, another change should be made in the middle of the park: the removal of a player who is miles off being the standard required to play for West Ham.

The West Ham ace who must be dropped

He isn’t the number one problem at West Ham this season, but it has become increasingly clear that Andrew Irving is nowhere near good enough to play for the club and should therefore be dropped.

It might sound harsh, but it’s an opinion shared by journalist Jordan Rushworth, who described the Scotsman as a “National League standard” midfielder, adding that he “gets walked past every time an opposition midfielder has the ball.”

Unfortunately for the Edinburgh-born ace, his statistics from the game at Elland Road only back up such a brutal assessment.

For example, in his 64 minutes of inaction, he amassed an expected assists figure of just 0.01, failed to make a single key pass, didn’t take any shots, misplaced 100% of his crosses, took 48 touches, lost the ball seven times, lost four of five duels and was dribbled past once.

It’s not just his technical weaknesses that are a problem for the Irons, though, but also his complete lack of any real physicality.

He’s not strong enough on or off the ball and lacks any real athleticism or explosiveness, which in the modern Premier League is a massive problem, and one highlighted by Jamie Carragher after the Brentford loss, when he described the Hammers as “one of the slowest teams I’ve seen in Premier League history!”

Therefore, regardless of the formation he wants to play, Nuno simply has to take Irving out of the starting lineup from now on, especially when he has better options to choose from.

For example, while he can still be a little rash, respected analyst Ben Mattinson has described Magassa as someone blessed with “pure athleticism.”

Moreover, he’s still relatively inexperienced at this level, but Freddie Potts can get around the pitch far easier than the Scotsman, and as Mattinson says, is blessed with an impressive “passing range and powerful carrying” ability.

Ultimately, while there are plenty of changes that need to happen at West Ham, one of the big ones is the removal of Iriving in favour of a far more dynamic and promising alternative.

Worse than Summerville: Nuno must drop 3/10 West Ham flop who's "the worst"

West Ham’s woes continued as they were defeated by Leeds United in the Premier League.

Former Australia quick Gordon Rorke dies aged 87

He made his mark on debut in the 1958-59 Ashes before his career was cut short

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jul-2025Former Australia fast bowler Gordon Rorke, who played four Tests, has passed away aged 87.A tall pace bowler, considered one of the fastest in Australia at the time, Rorke’s Test appearances all came in 1959 – two against England in the Ashes followed by two away against India late in the year where he was struck by illness when he contracted hepatitis. He claimed five wickets in the match on debut in Adelaide as Australia won by ten wickets and regained the Ashes. However, his career was dogged by controversy over his delivery where he dragged his back foot so that he could deliver the ball with his front foot several feet over the bowling crease. Rorke’s ability to do this led to a review of the no-ball laws.”I was frightened that he might tread on my toes,” Colin Cowdrey, who made 84 in Adelaide, said. The lingering effects of illness from his India tour meant that his career ended aged 25. Overall in first-class cricket for New South Wales, he claimed 88 wickets at 24.60.”Cricket NSW extends its deepest condolences to Gordon’s family and friends at this difficult time while celebrating his contribution to our game,” the state said.

West Indies seamers shine as Australia bowled out for 225 after a 7 for 68 collapse

Mitchell Starc strikes back with an early inroad before stumps in his 100th Test

Australia suffered a dramatic collapse of 7 for 68 under the new Sabina Park floodlights as West Indies’ quicks enjoyed the conditions with Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph and Justin Greaves sharing all ten before Mitchell Starc struck back with an early inroad in his 100th Test.Starc, who had earlier collected a duck, went close on numerous occasions before removing debutant Kevlon Anderson, who inside-edged onto the stumps attempting a drive. West Indies had been forced into a makeshift opening pair of Anderson and Brandon King after Mikyle Louis, who had been recalled in place of the struggling Kraigg Brathwaite the match after he reached 100 Tests, and John Campbell picked up injuries in the field.Losing just one wicket in 45 minutes against this Australia attack with a pink ball under lights could be considered a success with King and Roston Chase doing well to see out the day. As has been the case in the first two Tests, the value of Australia’s total will only really be clear once West Indies’ innings develops.Related

Pink-ball theatre: Unplayable deliveries, unbelievable catches and T20 batting in Test cricket

Australia were handily placed on 129 for 2 shortly before the dinner break with Cameron Green and Steven Smith well set, but Green fell to a wonderful delivery from Seales shortly before the break and then things started to happen quickly in the final session. Shamar Joseph removed Smith and Beau Webster while Travis Head fell to a stunning catch by substitute Anderson Phillip.Seales, Shamar Joseph and Greaves carried West Indies’ bowling after Alzarri Joseph was forced to leave the field due to back problems and was sent for scans. Meanwhile, Louis injured his knee when it was jarred in the outfield and Campbell took a blow in the chest at short leg.Substitute Anderson Phillip pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Travis Head•Associated Press

The day had significant intrigue before a ball was bowled when it was confirmed that Australia had omitted Nathan Lyon for the first time where he was available for a Test since 2013 as they went with an all-pace attack. West Indies, meanwhile, thought conditions warranted recalling their specialist spinner Jomel Warrican. There was purchase for both West Indies’ spinners but considerable assistance for quicks throughout on a well-grassed surface, with life very difficult as day turned to night. The tempo of the early exchanges belied what would come later. Sam Konstas, who was dropped on 1, and Usman Khawaja battled through the first hour for 21 runs and went on to compile the longest opening stand of the series. By lunch, Australia were 50 for 1, having struck just four boundaries, although a sluggish outfield was partly to blame for that.Konstas was given a life when debutant Anderson spilled a chance at third slip in the fifth over and was skittish in his running early on, twice being at risk of being dismissed had there been direct hits. Having done some hard work against the new ball, he was trapped lbw by Greaves to leave him one innings in the series to make a mark.West Indies thought they had Green before the interval when Seales won an appeal lbw, but Green reviewed with a second to spare and the ball was sliding past leg stump. Aside from that moment, Green built on the positive work of the second innings in Grenada and, after tea, unfurled a couple of crisp drives.Khawaja had absorbed a lot of pressure and good deliveries before falling to a stunning catch by Shai Hope as he edged Shamar Joseph from around the wicket.Australia left out a fit Nathan Lyon for the first time since 2013•Associated Press

Smith was quickly out of the blocks, pulling his first boundary powerfully through midwicket, and took three more in a row off Greaves before being given a life on 24 when Warrican couldn’t cling on to a stinging return catch. With Alzarri Joseph off the field, Chase had to juggle his pace bowlers and resorted to twin spin of himself and Warrican for a period in the middle session.Shortly before dinner, Seales, who has been outstanding through the series, produced a wonderful delivery which straightened to Green to clip the top of the bails – replays showed that if the ball hadn’t deviated, it would have hit the middle of the bat. When Smith and Head resumed under the glare of the floodlights, it was clear that batting would be tough and that the batters weren’t going to hang around. Smith was beaten by the first ball of the session and then edged wide of the slips before being distracted by the clock at the Courtney Walsh End, which needed covering with a black cloth.Smith slashed an edge over the cordon against Shamar Joseph before a repeat was well caught by King at first slip. There was no repair act from Webster this time as he edged behind.Head hadn’t hit top gear as he initially tried to repel the bowling, but then attempted to launch Greaves over the off side and was spectacularly held by Phillips, running to his right of mid-off and flying horizontally to hold the catch.Bat-throwing time had clearly been declared. Alex Carey had already lofted a six over mid-off against Greaves and then edged behind. Pat Cummins launched three sixes as he flung the bat at nearly everything before picking out long-on. Shamar Joseph took his series tally to 17 wickets when he removed Josh Hazlewood.

How the White Sox' Ineptitude Resulted in an Historic MLB Low With Loss No. 121

It’s been two months now since the Chicago White Sox stopped trying to outrun history. Players and coaches struggle to point to a date—the losses long ago started to run together—but it came around the lowest point in a season without highs.

Interim manager Grady Sizemore, elevated in early August to replace the fired Pedro Grifol, surveyed the room and made a decision. The team was barreling toward the single-season loss record of 120 games, set by the impossibly inept 1962 New York Mets. That group was an expansion team in its first season. This one was three years removed from winning the division. Sizemore could manage each game like the postseason, stealing outs from his starters and overusing his top relievers, fighting to lose only 119 games in 2024, or he could start thinking about 2025.

“Whether you lose 100 or 110, it doesn’t matter,” he says. (Evidently 121 does not even merit mention.) “You’re not going to the playoffs. At this point, we can’t focus on the record. It’s: How do we get better for next year? Who are the core guys that are coming back? How do we make them better? How do they fit into a winning team? How do we develop that team that we have in there right now into a productive, winning team next year, a competitive team that can play .500 baseball?”

In the meantime, history did come for them. On Friday, they lost their 121st game. All week they had insisted it would be just another loss, and indeed it was: The starter—this time lefty Garrett Crochet—pitched well, as they often have. The bullpen—this time lefties Jared Shuster and Fraser Ellard—gave up a couple of runs, as they often have. And the offense managed virtually nothing, as they often have. They lost 4–1 to the Detroit Tigers, their league-leading 46th time scoring fewer than two runs.

The players and coaches say they still expect to win every night. A player who was with the White Sox earlier this season disputes this: “They’re going in hoping to win,” he says, “But expecting to lose.”

They have had plenty of practice. They lost 22 of their first 25 games, tied for the worst start to a season in the wild-card era. Then it got worse. They lost 14 straight, then 21 straight, then 12 straight. They have staged one single successful comeback after the sixth inning all year. They are 0–102 when trailing after eight. They have held a lead in 95 games this season; they have lost 56 of those. According to FanGraphs, they have held a 0.0% chance of making the playoffs since April 7. They are 43 1/2 games back in the division … of fourth place.

All in all, it’s been the most stomach-turning summer in Chicago since Dave Matthews’s bus drove over the Kinzie Street Bridge.

“When you lose 21 in a row, it’s kind of like, ‘What the f—?” says Crochet. “You kind of get to the turning point of, like: All right, now it’s like, do you win? You do the [little] things. You get guys over. And I feel like we’ve done a better job than that as of late.” He grins and adds, “The record might [suggest] otherwise.”

It’s the worst year in history. They might as well get something out of it.

Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Join Exclusive Yankees List With Back-to-Back Homers in Game 5

The New York Yankees' offense is finally awake, and they got after Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty early on Wednesday night during Game 5 of the World Series.

Aaron Judge, whom the entire Yankees fan base has been desperate to see start making solid contact, opened his World Series home run account with a two-run jack in the bottom of the first. He took a fastball out to right field and parked it in the bleachers to give New York a 2–0 lead.

The crowd exploded with excitement when the captain finally came through after some elongated postseason struggles. Judge knew the moment it left the bat that the baseball was destined for the seats, and he saluted the crowd after touching the plate.

The excitement only heightened after that.

In the very next at-bat, Jazz Chisholm followed suit with a solo shot of his own. Chisholm's home run was also his first-ever in a World Series game, and it gave the team a 3–0 lead.

The Yankees duo became the fourth-ever tandem to hit back-to-back home runs in the organization's World Series history. Judge and Chisholm joined some iconic names in franchise lore including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig (1928, 1932), Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle (1964), and Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson (1977). It was the fifth time New York had hit back-to-back home runs in a World Series game, and the first time in 47 years.

Nick Castellanos Says Mets 'Do Not Want' to Return to Philadelphia for Game 5

The Philadelphia Phillies' backs are against the wall after their 7-2 loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday at Citi Field. One more loss ends the club's once-promising season.

Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos, who spoke to the media after the loss, is well aware of that fact. But Castellanos also believes Game 4's must-win environment, while a pressure-filled contest for the Phillies, also carries some pressure for the Mets as well.

"I think it's, instead of just flushing it and forgetting it, I think right now it's really important to embrace what we're … what the situation is," Castellanos said. "We lose, we're going home. Baseball's over for us.

"It's a great opportunity because if we're able to come in and scrape out a win here, I know that they do not want to go back to Philly for a Game 5."

Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies' home ballpark, has become a very tough place to play for opponents, especially in recent postseason history.

The Phillies had the best home record in baseball during the regular season. Since 2004, Philadelphia owns a 29–14 record in playoff games at Citizens Bank Park. That's good for a .674 winning percentage, which is the best by any team in any stadium in postseason history.

As such, there's certainly every reason for Castellanos and company to feel confident about their prospects in a potential Game 5 at home. But the Phillies, who didn't pitch particularly well and stranded six runners in Tuesday's loss, need to play better to make that scenario a reality.

With the season on the line, Philadelphia sends Ranger Suarez to the mound to pitch against the Mets' Jose Quintana on Wednesday night.

Duke, Milnes, Coad team up to demolish Middlesex

Three of Duke’s six dismissals came off Matt Milnes, who took 4 for 29 after Ben Coad wrecked the hosts’ top order at Radlett

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay17-Aug-2025Yorkshire 130 for 3 (Imam-ul-Haq 53*, Brookes 3-17) beat Middlesex 129 (Cornwell 28*, Robson 28, Milnes 4-29, Coad 3-26) by seven wicketsYorkshire wicketkeeper Harry Duke took six catches to set a List A record for the county as they thrashed Middlesex to cement their status as Metro Bank One Day Cup Group B front-runners.Three of Duke’s dismissals came off the bowling of Matt Milnes, who took 4 for 29 after Ben Coad, bowling unchanged to finish with 3 for 26, had wrecked Middlesex’s top order at Radlett. The home side, who began the day level on points with their opponents, could not get to grips with Yorkshire’s relentless seam attack on a pitch with variable bounce, registering the ground’s lowest List A total as they were rolled for 129 in 31 overs.Opener Imam-ul-Haq maintained his excellent form in the tournament, hitting a stylish unbeaten 54 from 66 balls as the White Rose coasted to victory with 23 overs to spare, despite Henry Brookes’ spell of 3 for 17.Jack White set the tone after Middlesex had won the toss and surprisingly chosen to bat first, his third delivery spitting up at Josh de Caires’ elbow and deflecting back onto the stumps. Will Luxton then pulled off a smart tumbling catch at backward point to remove Joe Cracknell off Coad, who also had Ben Geddes caught behind pushing forward as the home side sank to 5 for 3.Sam Robson hung in there and, having taken 13 deliveries to get off the mark by squirting White to long-on for three, oversaw a brief counter-attack with some courageous strokes off both front and back foot.He reached 28, sharing a stand of 38 with Jack Davies but, once both had departed in the space of three balls, Middlesex continued to flounder against sustained, accurate Yorkshire bowling.Nathan Fernandes and Toby Roland-Jones did their best to spark a recovery, with the latter pulling George Hill for the first six of the innings before he was given out caught behind next ball.It was left to Noah Cornwell to provide some cheer for the home supporters, taking on Hill and plundering 18 from four deliveries – including two top-edged fours over Duke’s head – to post a career-best 28 not out. However, the wicketkeeper snapped up an edge off last man Nathan Gilchrist to claim his sixth dismissal and close out the innings with 19 overs unused, leaving Yorkshire to enjoy their lunch and contemplate a modest target of 130.Lyth made the most of a leg-side glance that Cracknell could not hold in the first over of the visitors’ reply, dispatching Roland-Jones for successive fours and dominating his partnership of 59 with Imam. Both Roland-Jones and Gilchrist beat the bat several times without success, but Brookes’ sudden burst of three wickets in seven deliveries pegged Yorkshire back as Lyth drove to gully for 39 before Luxton and James Wharton were both caught behind. But Imam displayed his class, cutting and driving with precision and steering the ball into gaps and lifting the White Rose total into three figures as he pulled Cornwell for back-to-back boundaries.Duke played an efficient supporting role with the bat, punching Brookes and Cornwell to the rope as he kept Imam company with a breezy 28 in their unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 63.However, it was the Pakistan international – having passed 50 for the fourth consecutive game – who applied the finishing touch, glancing Cornwell to the fence at long leg to confirm Yorkshire’s victory.
