'You live for those pressure moments' – de Villiers

If AB de Villiers was less experienced, South Africa might have lost the series to England on Sunday. If AB de Villiers was less experienced, 22 for 3 would have been a hole too deep for him to dig his team out of. If AB de Villiers was less experienced, 237 would have been too much to chase. But AB de Villiers was playing in his 200th ODI and knew exactly what to do: embrace the situation and then overcome it.”You live for those pressure moments,” de Villiers said. “Through an international career, you have ups and down but you always feel you are gong to be tested in moments like that. It has taken me years to feel comfortable and to feel like I have good composure in those situations.”De Villiers knew that after a top-order tumble South Africa needed cool heads. Luckily, he had his calmest team-mate, Hashim Amla, on hand to provide that.”The chat between us was not to worry about the runs and to make sure we get in and not lose another wicket,” he explained. “We’ve done it before. I felt it was really important to take it 10 runs at a time and get to a fifty-run partnership.”After 58 balls together, de Villiers and Amla had that. They’d also survived a squeeze, punished some poor balls and given themselves some breathing room. After another 48 balls, that stand had doubled and South Africa were safe. The captain’s decision to drop himself one lower than the No.4 position he usually bats looked like a stroke of genius and the victory target was well within reach.”I like to push myself a little bit down when we are chasing. I feel I handle the pressure situations well and that’s why I want to be there at the end,” de Villiers said. And if he is there at the end, the South Africans always feel they have a chance.More than his ability and audacious strokeplay, it’s de Villiers’ attitude that keeps his countrymen and, in the space of the last week, his team-mates hopeful. With South Africa 2-0 down, de Villiers rallied his troops and asked them “to keep believing”.He admitted that in facing the prospect of a second series defeat at home in the same summer, they were in a “really dark space”, but that he wanted them to snap out of it.”I asked them to keep spirits up. I asked them to keep believing and have the faith we can come back,” he said. “We showed inspirational videos here and there but we tried to focus on the basics and do the small things right and well, and created more pressure than England and then things went our way.”South Africa also made key personnel changes when they realised the precariousness of their position. They stopped relying on JP Duminy and Farhaan Behardien, to operate as the fifth bowler and brought in an allrounder to give them 10 overs. They shortened their batting line-up from a specialist point of view but added two genuine finishers and seemed to find a better balance, even if it’s not something they will stick with long-term.”I like to think we haven’t moved away from that seven-batsmen option,” de Villiers said. “But David (Wiese) and Chris (Morris) brought a different dynamic. Change was needed after the first two ODIs and they breathed an air of confidence into the side.”Wiese has been the more consistent of the two but Morris will be remembered as the hero after his match-winning innings of 62 at the Wanderers. His knock there kept South Africa alive. It gave them the belief de Villiers sought but they still could have drowned in the wave of emotion that match swept over them. That they didn’t only shows how desperate they were to finish the job.”We took a lot of confidence from that but after an emotional game like that, it’s easy to lose your fighting spirit,” de Villiers said. “We were just maybe a bit more hungry than England to really nail it down.”Even so, he praised the opposition for giving South Africa a wake-up call and a warning for what they will offer in tournaments to come. “They are a fantastic one-day team,” he said. “To come back from rock bottom in that 2015 World Cup. The talent was always there but mentally they had to get through a few obstacles.”Morgs played a big part in that. Even though he didn’t have a great series with the bat, he still had the right body language. He is the right man to take England forward. They will be a team to deal with in the next few years, especially at the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup.”If de Villiers keeps performing like he did at Newlands, so might South Africa.

Blues snare giant striker Zigic

Birmingham City have completed the signing of Serbia striker Nikola Zigic from Spanish side Valencia.

The 6ft 8in hitman has joined the Blues on a four-year contract after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £6million.

Zigic, who is part of Serbia's World Cup squad, has been linked with several moves to the Premier League in the recent past.

Valencia paid Racing Santander £13.5million to sign the striker back in 2007 but he struggled to hold down a starting place at the Mestalla.

He was loaned back to Racing last season where he scored an impressive 13 goals in 19 matches.

The 29-year-old has also scored 16 goals in 42 international appearances.

Speaking earlier in the month, agent Milan Calasan said: "He has always said would be interested in a move to England and if he was to go there it would have to be the right club that understands his characteristics."

Zigic is the third new signing made by Blues boss Alex McLeish since the Premier League season ended.

He has paid a reported £6million for Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster and signed Spanish midfielder Enric Valles on a free transfer.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Was Fabio Capello’s punt always going to end in tears?

Ledley King’s World Cup dreams appears to be coming to an abrupt end before ever actually starting, after the defender suffered yet another injury whilst playing against the US this past Saturday.

The England centre-back managed to play only just 45 minutes before eventually being substituted for Jamie Carragher, which raises a few questions. Was Capello’s decision to include King in his final 23 man squad a correct one? Or has the Italian gambled, and evidently wasted a valuable space by taking the centre-back to South Africa?

King’s recent injury (although not connected to his long-term knee problem) would have no doubt reignited the debate of whether the defender should have been included in the squad in the first place by Capello. The England coach told the gathering media of the defender’s set-back:

“Ledley has a problem with his abductor muscle and will not play in the next game.”

The England centre-back has officially been ruled of the group C clash against Algeria this Friday, and recent reports suggest that the player’s groin injury may take up to three weeks to heal, which has left King’s World Cup dreams in on the rocks. The man likely to take his place, Jamie Carragher, told Sky Sports of King’s dismay:

“Losing Ledley is a blow. He is a top player and it is unfortunate because it is the same position as Rio. You can’t bring anyone else out now, so any injury is going to hurt the squad. But the manager (Fabio Capello ) picked five centre-backs in the squad because he knew there could be problems and his selections have been proved right.”

The Spurs man is not known to have a great fitness level, and as such, stuggled to get game time. Nevertheless, Capello decided to take him to South Africa as he is undoubtedly one of the finest defenders England have to offer.

Capello’s theory behind King’s inclusion was that the player would be a back-up option in the defensive department. Certainly King himself knew that when boarding the plane that he was only a contingency plan, should John Terry or Rio Ferdinand have been unfit, suffered an injury or stricken by a virus. Ferdinand did have fitness problems prior to the start of the World Cup, and unexpectedly suffered knee ligament damage during an England training session. Ferdinand was ruled out so King stepped in.

To be fair King did perform well against USA, but with every touch, run and tackle England fans and maybe even Capello were genuinely worried that the centre-back was going to pull a muscle and sadly he did…a gamble which backfired by the England coach? You better believe it.

Capello could have left King home and instead opted for either Gary Cahill or Ryan Shawcross. However, these two centre-backs are still very young and have only been capped at U-21 level for their country, so to take either one of them would have been a crazy decision by the Italian.

King was unfortunate to pick up yet another injury, although, it was pretty much written in the stars, wasn’t it? Taking all this into consideration, should King have been included in the England squad this summer, despite his injury-prone status? Yes. Secondly, did Capello waste a space on the England plane in regards to the defender? Not really. Thirdly and more importantly, were there better options available to the England coach to consider? Many would think not.

Switzerland medical for Cole

Joe Cole has arrived in Switzerland for a medical before officially signing for Liverpool.

The 28-year-old England international has joined up with his new team-mates at a training camp where he will complete the formalities on his free transfer move to Anfield.

Cole is the first player brought to the club by new manager Roy Hodgson following his release by Chelsea at the end of the last campaign.

The Reds beat off interest from Tottenham and West Ham to sign the midfielder and club legend Ian Rush believes Cole can help bring the best out of star duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

Cole is expected to put pen to paper on a four-year contract worth a reported £90,000 per week in the next few days.

"When you look at what we've got attacking-wise, we've got younger lads but we needed more experience and Cole brings that," said Rush, who is the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

"Joe could play just behind Fernando Torres. People don't know his position because he can play on the left, right and just off the striker, and I think it's a wonderful signing.

"Skill-wise he is the best in England – there is no one better.

"I'm sure Roy Hodgson will play him in every game, especially if he is playing well, and maybe getting regular football is a reason why he has come to Liverpool.

"To get Joe to come out of London and come to Liverpool is a coup for Hodgson himself.

"A lot of people were expecting him to stay in London because that's where he was born and been brought up.

"I think this sends a sign out to Liverpool supporters that the club do mean business."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Mark Schwarzer desires Arsenal move

Veteran Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has admitted that he is desperate to be allowed to leave Craven Cottage and join Arsenal before the transfer window shuts.

The 37-year-old Australia international is reported to be a top target for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who is keen to being in an experienced keeper to help out Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.

New Cottagers boss Mark Hughes does not want to lose one of his star performers, but Schwarzer is adamant that he wants the opportunity to move to the Emirates Stadium.

He told the Australian Daily Telegraph:"I need it to happen. I've had a couple of chats with Mark Hughes and it's delicately poised.

"Who wouldn't be keen to go to Arsenal? At this stage in my career it's an amazing opportunity to play at that level and one I really want to take.

"It's taken a long time and the season's very close. On one hand you understand them not wanting to disrupt too many things, but I want things resolved as quickly as possible.

Steve Bruce explains Kenwyne Jones deal

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has confirmed that he allowed Kenwyne Jones to join Stoke City in an £8million deal because he felt the striker was not playing up to his full potential.

The 25-year-old frontman scored 28 goals in 101 appearances for the Black Cats, but Bruce felt that Jones could have done better.

He told the Sunderland Echo:“There has always been a frustration with me, and I think with supporters, who have watched Kenwyne that you see an abundance of talent, but it has not come out often enough for us for whatever reason.

“In management you get paid to make some important decisions sometimes. Stoke have been badgering me for a year. Everyone knows they love a big, traditional centre-forward and he might go and suit them.

“Towards the end with Kenwyne, things were not working out, so I have accepted Stoke’s offer and given him permission to speak to them.”

Having allowed Jones to move on, the Black Cats are poised to sign Manchester United frontman Danny Welbeck on a season-long loan.

Sunderland sign Ghana star Asamoah Gyan

Ghana international Asamoah Gyan, one of the stars of this summer's World Cup, has joined Sunderland from French side Rennes.

The 24-year-old moves to the Black Cats for a club record transfer fee of more than £13million, beating the previous highest amount paid to Tottenham last summer for Darren Bent.

Gyan has signed a four-year contract after impressing for the Black Stars in South Africa, scoring three goals as Ghana reached the World Cup quarter-finals.

He started his career at Liberty Professionals in his homeland before joining Udinese seven years ago. Gyan scored 11 goals in 39 appearances for the club and also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Modena.

He moved to Rennes in July 2008 and went on to score 14 goals in 48 appearances for the French side, before featuring in all five of his country's games at the World Cup against Serbia, Australia, Germany, the USA and Uruguay.

Avram Grant: West Ham will be fully prepared

Manager Avram Grant has revealed that he will prepare West Ham United for Saturday's trip to Stoke City but he will not personally be in the dugout at the Britannia Stadium.

The Israeli coach has confirmed media reports that he would not be at the match due to a clash with the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur.

But Grant, who delayed taking the reins at former club Chelsea due to a similar clash three years ago, has dismissed suggestions that the Hammers will be unprepared for the trip north.

"I will have all the input except I will not be in the dugout," he explained."The meeting with the team, the talking with the team, the tactics, the training and the preparation for the team is the same.

"The staff know exactly what they need to know in any situation and so do the team."

The Hammers are currently rock-bottom of the Premier League table after four successive defeats this season, but Grant insists he never considered changing his mind about missing Saturday's game, adding:"It is the one day I have respected since I was a child and unfortunately it came on a Saturday this time.

Steve Bruce backs Darren Bent to shine

Manager Steve Bruce has backed Sunderland striker Darren Bent to enjoy success on the international stage with England.

The 26-year-old has been hailed as an important player by national team head coach Fabio Capello, having opened his goalscoring account for England in their 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Switzerland last month.

Bruce told the Sunderland Echo:"I'm delighted for Darren that his England career is up and running again, he totally deserves it.

"He's a top-quality professional, but more importantly than that, he's also a proven and prolific goalscorer in the league I regard as the toughest in the world.

"How many Englishman can claim that? Not many. It was great to see him back in the squad the other month and great to see him on the scoresheet.

"Now that he's done that, his next target is to be an England regular and I think that's something that is in his grasp – the sheer number of goals he has scored over the years has to count in his favour.

Should Toffees Let This One Out of the Wrapper?

Steven Pienaar is stood at a crossroads and seemingly edging towards one route more so than the other. With Everton having offered the out-of-contract player a wage increase during the summer and his insistence not to accept the newly offered terms, it seems ever increasingly likely that the South African will seek pastures new, leaving Everton Street in the distance as he ventures forth.

It must be a disparaging realisation for David Moyes that a player he bought for £2 million from Borussia Dortmund and whom he gave the opportunity to prove himself in the Premiership, will renounce these past pledges in the hope of securing a better deal for himself. Everton have no doubt nurtured the player and given him the exposure that has resulted in various clubs, such as Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United, becoming admirers. To leave without any remuneration in return or acknowledgement of the things that Everton have done for him would leave a bitter taste in the mouth of any manager. But then again as former players have professed before ‘look out for number one’, for the clubs can be just as unforgiving. This appears to be a reciprocal relationship of self-interest by both parties resulting in an imbalance in the eventual outcome.

With Pienaar’s seemingly obstinate mentality, the matter presents itself as to whether or not Everton try to cash in on the player rather than letting him go for nothing in return. This could be denied in January by a foreign club if Pienaar opts to sign a pre-contract agreement, or if he decides to bide his time at Everton until the end of the season and transfer to another English club. There are two options available in light of the situation; one, Everton can continue to persevere in contract talks and two, they will try to manufacture a move for Pienaar to a Premiership club. With the first being a non-starter, the solitary option is to sell in January or involve him in a player swap deal.

[youtube hsjxuBfzgDY]

Everton captain Philip Neville has declared that, “He is such an influential character. But it happened to Joleon Lescott a few years ago and we did not want him to move. It has happened to several other big players.” If Pienaar is using Everton as a stepping stone then he will have succeeded in his mission by not signing a new contract and moving to a top club, whether home or abroad. Ultimately the final decision comes down to the player himself and what he wants to achieve, Everton can only do so much persuading until all avenues have been exhausted. As Neville again states: “You can say to Steven every minute of every day that we do not want him to leave but at the end of the day it is his decision. The club wants him to stay, but there is not much else we can say.”

A period of limbo thus ensues for both club and player, with the future to be determined by a single decision. Who would be an adequate replacement or are their already enough players at Everton to compensate for Pienaar’s departure if he indeed does leave?
