Spurs boss Pochettino eyed by Bayern Munich

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Bayern Munich are fans of Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino as they search for a successor to current boss Niko Kovac, per Sport1.

What’s the word?

The Bundesliga giants are currently second in the table, one point behind Borussia Monchengladbach.

Bayern were almost knocked out of the DFB Cup on Tuesday, too, as Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller saved the club from a 1-0 defeat to second-tier VFL Bochum.

And the report claims that the club’s players have stopped playing for the 48-year-old, with Pochettino a potential successor.

Indeed, sporting director Hasan Salihamidicz is said to be an advocate of appointing the Spurs manager, and he has the Argentine’s phone number.

Waiting by the phone

One imagines that Pochettino might well be waiting by the phone.

The former Southampton boss has spent a total of five years at Spurs, guiding them to the Champions League final last season.

Yet, this year, he has overseen a traumatic start to the campaign; they have won just three games in the Premier League and, ironically, were thumped 7-2 by Bayern in the Champions League.

There are not many opportunities for managers to move to genuinely elite European clubs but it appears as though the door may be ajar at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern are serial trophy winners, they have won the last seven Bundesliga titles in a row and Pochettino has yet to pick up a single winner’s medal as a coach.

Indeed, one feels that his project at Spurs is nearing an end, such is their poor form, and that he could suddenly be tempted away.

A move to the Bavarian giants would almost guarantee a trophy and Pochettino ought to seriously consider the possibility.

Man Utd fans think Paul Pogba’s Old Trafford career is over after comeback delay

In one of the longest running transfer sagas of the summer, Paul Pogba’s ‘will-he-stay’ or ‘will-he-go’ situation overwhelmed Manchester United’s entire summer.

All the headlines were dominated with whether the Frenchman would be making his departure from Old Trafford, particularly after his very public comments about wanting a new challenge.

However, a move to either Real Madrid or Juventus failed to materialise, and the 26-year-old has had no choice but to stay put at the club.

The France World Cup winner has been out of action for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side with injury, and the United boss confirmed ahead of the club’s Europa League match with Partizan Belgrade that he doesn’t have an exact date as to when the midfielder will make his return.

After hearing the latest injury news on the former Juventus man, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the France international.

Many supporters of the Manchester side appeared to have a resigned feeling over the matter, suggesting that delayed comeback is simply a way of wanting out of the club in the near future.

Check out some of the reaction of United fans below:

Gerrard gets striker selection right against St. Johnstone

Rangers fans still can’t quite believe their luck having a player like Jermain Defoe providing the back-up to star man Alfredo Morelos.

Despite being in the twilight of his career, Defoe has made such an impact that there are already rumours of the Gers looking to secure his services for another season as reported in The Daily Record earlier in the season.

Steven Gerrard looks to have finally found the winning formula with regards to rotation of his forwards, keeping both them and the fans happy.

Morelos showed, in textbook fashion, why he is so important to the Ibrox club with the opening goal against St Johnstone on Sunday. Would things have been different if Defoe had started?

On the Chalkboard

Defoe arrived at Rangers from Bournemouth in January on an 18 month loan deal, at the time the only back up for Morelos was Kyle Lafferty who had been struggling for form and goals.

He made an immediate impact on his debut for the club scoring against Kilmarnock but his most telling contribution would come when Morelos served his final suspension of the season.

With Ryan Kent also suspended, Gerrard played a narrower formation with Scott Arfield playing behind the diminutive Englishman. Immediately Rangers improved to the extent that Morelos had to content himself with a place on the bench in the final Old Firm game of the season.

Defoe didn’t score but his dummy for Arfield’s goal more than justified his inclusion over the talismanic Colombian as did his match rating of 7.69/10 on the BBC Sport website.

This season has seen Morelos start at a blistering pace with 12 goals and 3 assists in 15 games so far this season, a goal involvement of 1 every 66 minutes. Defoe isn’t far behind with 8 goals in 12 appearances but has only played 500 minutes to Morelos’ 900.

This doesn’t mean Defoe should start ahead of Morelos, nor is there a clamber for it. The two league games in which Defoe has started provide for interesting reading. A 6-1 victory at home over Hibernian and a 1-0 away victory against St Mirren.

Against Hibs, the opponents came out and attacked Rangers, they left space behind and allowed Gerrard’s men to play through them – Defoe netted a hat-trick.

The game against St Mirren was completely different. St Mirren packed the box and frequently had all their players providing a block. There was no space for Defoe to operate in and he had one of his poorest games for Rangers with fans rating him at 5.9/10 on the BBC Sport website.

There would’ve been a temptation to rest Morelos against St Johnstone but given how they would set up, Gerrard made the correct decision to start him then bring on Defoe. The goal Morelos scored meant the Perth side had to open up and Defoe was able to capitalise with the extra space available. He could easily have had a hat-trick but for blazing his first chance over the stand.

Rangers fans can expect more of the same from Gerrard, Morelos starting against the tighter and more compact teams away from home, getting his rest against more expansive teams or at home, such as Wednesday’s visit of Livingston in the League Cup.

Gerrard recently celebrated his 75th game in charge of the Glasgow club and it looks like he is learning his lessons from last season – much to the delight of Rangers fans.

Real Madrid simply cannot underestimate Levante

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The international break is finally behind us and the clubs are once again gearing up for the weekend’s action. Real Madrid will be hosting a tricky opponent in the form of Levante at the Santiago Bernabeu this Saturday, and it will be extremely important that Zinedine Zidane doesn’t fall for the “trap game” that lies ahead of them.

Just a couple of days later, in mid-week, Los Blancos have much bigger fish to fry as they travel to the City of Light to face Paris Saint-Germain. Naturally, the Champions League usually takes precedence in such situations and many would be quick to throw the seemingly insignificant league game under the bus just to make sure the big European night goes well.

But looking back the league table and especially at Real Madrid’s upcoming schedule, can Zidane actually afford to sacrifice the Levante game for an off-chance he gets a more favourable result in the Champions League?

Following that, they also have a trip to Sevilla, a place at which they haven’t been able to claim victory, or even a point for that matter, since the 2014/15 season.

Taking all of that into consideration and judging by the results we’ve seen from them so far in the season, it’s probably pretty safe to say that they really can’t afford to slip now against Levante.

Currently, the Galacticos are sitting in fifth with a tally of five points after three games played.

And yes, it’s only the start of the campaign and the season is long. Other teams will drop points too and the league table will chop and change. But, they also have to keep in mind that Atletico Madrid have three wins in three games and are on course to completely run away with it if Barcelona and Real Madrid do not get their acts together.

This becomes an even bigger problem when we take into account that the last game of this month will be a Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano, and whoever wins that one just might gain a significant advantage.

But if Zidane slips significantly before then, it could mean that his team are playing catch-up from the get-go and even before they get a chance to directly put pressure on their city rivals.

Levante might be the first step towards clawing their way back to the top, or at the very least, close enough to it so they represent some danger for whoever lies top of the pile. And now that he actually might get some of his injured troops back into the squad, there will be no more excuses moving forward.

Yes, the transfer window could’ve been better and yes, there are still issues Real Madrid have to resolve in the not so distant future, but the goal is to focus on what they’ve got right here and right now and start winning once again. Zidane has a big enough squad full of talent, experience and world-class players to compete on all fronts.

The rather poor ending to the 2018/19 season should definitely be a warning sign, and now that an equally frustrating summer is behind them and their squad is finally getting back together, maybe we once again see a dominant at the Bernabeu.

But it all has to start somewhere, and for Real Madrid, that first step may very well be this weekend against Levante.

Wolves loanee Jesus Vallejo may have to suffer on the bench because of early season progress

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolves’ Premier League season didn’t start in the best possible way last weekend as they were subjected to one of the first controversial VAR calls of the season.

Leander Dendoncker looked to have given Nuno Santo’s side the lead, only for the goal to be ruled out because of a new handball rule.

As a result, the game was drawn 0-0 as both teams held firm in defence.

The black and gold were excellent on the counter-attack last term, particularly against some of the best sides, achieving 16 points against top-six opposition.

However, it was their defence that stood out most as the new term started.

On the chalkboard

As a result of their defensive display against the Foxes, Wolves may have to continue to leave Jesus Vallejo out.

Against Leicester he wasn’t included in the squad but it surely won’t be too long before the Real Madrid man features in the Premier League.

Arriving on loan from La Liga over the summer, it wouldn’t have been a great surprise to see him slot straight into the defence.

Ryan Bennett looked the most likely to drop out given Conor Coady is the skipper and Willy Boly’s resolute nature. Yet, the former was superb against Leicester which means Vallejo may have to suffer on the sidelines for a little longer.

There is no doubting the Spaniard’s pedigree. After all, he was one of the players win the European U21 Championships this summer.

However, the dogged and perhaps rather surprising performance of Bennett and the rest of the defence on week one of the Premier League makes it difficult to see how Vallejo starts against Manchester United on Monday evening.

If you don’t know the words to the Joao Moutinho chant in the video below, are you even a real Wolves fan?…

Bennett won two aerial duels last weekend whilst also making an impressive four interceptions. The central defender showed his no-nonsense approach with three clearances too.

It was a resilient performance against a Leicester team boasting numerous creative outlets and it showed he does indeed have the ability to step up.

On evidence this season, it could be a hard task for Vallejo to make an instant impact.

The positive for him, however, will be the fact that he’s far more likely to get game time as a result of Nuno’s preferred three-man defensive unit.

Spurs fans are wrong to want Gareth Bale to return this summer

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans were sent into a frenzy last weekend after Mauricio Pochettino pleaded ignorance when asked about the possibility of Gareth Bale returning to the club.

He is being frozen out at Real Madrid and his manager, Zinedine Zidane, has confirmed that he wants the Wales international to leave the club.

Asked about the possibility of a stunning deal to bring Bale back, Pochettino said: “Yes, I saw in the media but I don’t know which club is working, trying to sign him. At the moment I don’t have any information from my chairman. I don’t know if we are or it’s another club. It’s not my job. It’s the job of my chairman that is trying to build the best squad possible.”

Cue meltdown.

Scores of fans flooded Twitter, begging for the club to bring the former star back to north London.

Across a six-year stay in the capital, Bale became a megastar, scoring 56 goals and registering 58 assists in 203 games. He scored that famous hat-trick against Inter Milan. He became renowned for long-range screamers. He moved for a world-record fee.

Yet fans are forgetting something: Bale treated Spurs like dirt.

On August 28th, 2013, as he neared a move to Madrid, the Daily Telegraph reported that he failed to turn up to training for two days in a row.

His then-manager, Andre Villas-Boas, had expected him to turn up, per the report, but he simply didn’t.

The manager later said in a press conference that Bale would probably be fined for failing to report.

He said, per The Metro: “He is involved in a big transfer move to Real Madrid and in the end if it happens, we wish him all the best, but the fact that he hasn’t turned up is not the correct behaviour.

“That is the position they chose to take and it’s up to the club to decide if it’s a fineable offence.”

Prior to this, on July 23rd, Marca, via the Telegraph, reported that Bale had told Spurs chairman Daniel Levy he wanted to leave after his agent, Jonathan Barnett, was involved in a clandestine meeting with Los Blancos officials in which he was shown his client’s prospective No.11 shirt at the Bernabeu.

Barnett, the Telegraph claimed, was involved in discussions as to how to force Spurs into a sale.

On July 30th, the newspaper claimed that Bale was growing “frustrated” and that his state of mind was one of “anger” that Spurs were adopting a “stubborn approach”.

The next day, they reported that Bale had personally informed Villas-Boas he wanted to leave.

This is not a player who respected Spurs.

Of course, players have dream moves. Certain Premier League players want to play for certain big clubs abroad. It has happened ad infinitum and is happening again this summer, with Eden Hazard moving to Real Madrid from Chelsea.

Yet for fans to beg for Bale’s return is to forget what he did to the club.

It was a summer of frustration for fans as the transfer rebel essentially soiled his own legacy.

He had been turned into a star by Tottenham and then, at the drop of a hat, turned his back on them, chasing the big move.

It has gone south. He does not seem to be wanted in Madrid despite winning a clutch of trophies and scoring one of the best goals the Champions League has ever seen.

It is ironic, really, that despite his performances, he is not being shown any loyalty, in almost a mirror image of what he did to Spurs.

Reports suggest that he could well end up in China, where he might earn over £1m-per-week and play with the likes of Marko Arnautovic, who recently forced his way out of West Ham United in pursuit of a payday.

That is the very definition of poetic justice and it is exactly what Bale deserves.

Those Spurs fans who want him back are being forgetful; he wronged the club and its supporters; he should not be welcomed back with open arms.
