Vece Paes appointed as physio to East Zone Academy

The East Zone wing of the National Cricket Academy run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started functioning in Kolkata. The camp is being conducted by the former Test opener Arun Lal. Assisting him are Barun Burman from Bengal, Randhir Singh of Bihar and Jimut Mohanty of Orissa. However, the highlight of the Academy is the participation of Dr. Vece Paes, who incidentally is the father of India’s tennis star Leander Paes. The Cricket Association of Bengal initially had objected to the appointment of Dr Paes in the Academy. He is performing the role of a physical trainer. Initially, the CAB had planned to appoint some former cricketer of the state to perform the role. It was at Arun Lal’s insistence that the CAB was forced to accept Dr. Paes. Giving the reasons for his choice, Lal said on Wednesday, “To me he is the best man in the country as far as Sports Medicine is concerned. He can really work wonders with young kids.Being a former Olympian himself, he can understand the psychology of a sports person better than anyone else. That is why, I have brought him to the Academy.” Lal said that the camp will continue for two months and the emphasis will be on fitness. “I want to increase the physical ability, endurance and fitness of the cricketers in the Academy to the highest level.” The cricketers are going through their practice drills in two sessions. The morning session consists of physical exercise, swimming and fielding drills. The afternoon session is restricted to only fielding and batting.” The former Test opener who had earlier coached the senior Bengal team felt that it was easier to coach youngsters. “They listen to your advice. The seniors come as a much more hardened lot. They are not willing to change.”The Academy is being run in the same manner that Rodney Marsh runs theCommonwealth Bank Cricket Academy in Adelaide. Bowlers have been askedto bowl a maximum of 40 deliveries per day. The cricketers have alsobeen given a file where they have been asked to write a daily reporton their performance.

Pundit says Wilson must leave Liverpool

Paul Stewart has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Harry Wilson must leave Liverpool to progress his career.

The Wrexham-born attacker came through the academy at Anfield but has made just two first-team appearances for the Reds – the second of which came against Arsenal earlier this season in the Carabao Cup.

As a result, Wilson has spent the previous four seasons out on loan in both the Championship and Premier League.

The last of those was back in his native Wales with Cardiff City where he scored seven times, including an exquisite hat-trick against Birmingham in their penultimate game earlier this month, and added 12 assists, in the latest in a long spell of loan spells for the 24-year-old.

Wilson showed two years ago at Bournemouth that he’s more than capable to competing at Premier League level, although a career at Liverpool doesn’t appear likely.

The Athletic recently reported that Wilson has no future on Merseyside, and Stewart believes that he must leave Liverpool to further his own career having been continuously overlooked by Jurgen Klopp.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“I actually thought at one point that he was doing so well on loan that he could come back and maybe have a future at Liverpool.

“But for him to progress in his own career he’s maybe got to look at leaving Liverpool, otherwise, if he stays, he’s probably going to be loaned out and not be a fixture in the team.”

SAFC fans happy with Sanderson news

Sunderland fans appear to be very happy after Lee Johnson revealed ahead of the Blackpool clash that Dion Sanderson will not miss the rest of the season as initially expected.

The Black Cats’ hopes of automatic promotion are in trouble following a couple of disappointing results. First, they were beaten by Charlton Athletic 2-1 before losing by the same scoreline to Wigan Athletic, who are currently struggling to stay in League One. They currently trail second-placed Peterborough United by five points with six games left to play (BBC).

They were then hit with another blow when it appeared Sanderson would miss the rest of the season due to injury (Roker Report). However, prior to the Wearside outfit’s clash with Blackpool this weekend, manager Johnson has revealed Sanderson should be fit before the end of the season (James Hunter).

The news appeared to please the club’s supporters, and they were quick to take to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter when the news broke.

Aston Villa considered Keinan Davis loan

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that the Villans have considered loaning out striker Keinan Davis on more than one occasion.

Davis helped Villa turn things around against Fulham earlier this month after he came off the bench to assist Trezeguet’s second goal of the game which made it 2-1, before Ollie Watkins finally put the nail in the coffin.

Undoubtedly, it was a match where Davis showed his quality and what he has to offer, perhaps giving manager Dean Smith something to think about going forward.

Things, however, could have ended so differently, with Hendrie revealing that the 23-year-old has had opportunities to go out on loan.

On Davis, the ex-Villa player told FFC:

“I know they like him. I know they like him, hence they’ve kept hold of him. He could have gone out on loan a few times and they’ve kept hold of him. I know the striker situation has been a bit of an issue there, but when he’s come on he hasn’t let the team down.”

There is probably a long way to go until Davis can start to really stake a claim for a starting spot in Villa’s XI, with top scorer Watkins currently standing in his way.

However, as he showed against Fulham, the Englishman can certainly have an impact off the bench.

Arsenal: Gunners eye move for Jordan Amavi

Premier League giants Arsenal are reportedly eyeing up a move for former Aston Villa player Jordan Amavi.

French outlet Le10Sport have released a report about the situation of Amavi, mentioning interest from Arsenal and Italian juggernauts AC Milan.

Amavi could reject Arsenal interest and stay at Marseille

Le10Sport have stated that, while Amavi’s contract at Marseille runs out this summer of, Arsenal are monitoring his situation and the player is being courted in Serie A too. Stefano Pioli’s AC Milan are also cited as one of the interested parties.

The report added that Amavi and Marseille could soon reach an agreement for the left-back to sign a new contract. A new three-year deal could be penned by the defender so that he can continue his adventure at the Stade Velodrome.

That will come as a blow to Milan and Arsenal, who were following the defender’s progress in Ligue 1 recently. The 26-year-old has previously plied his trade with Aston Villa, who sold him to Marseille  in the summer of 2018 after an initial loan deal in France.

This season, Amavi has made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring once. Andre Villas-Boas, who had managed him at Marseille earlier in the campaign, hailed the Frenchman as “amazing” and spoke highly of his defending, aerial ability and pace.

Signing Amavi could be a good move for Arsenal

Since Amavi’s contract runs out in the summer, he could be available on a free transfer for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side currently have just one out-and-out left-back option in the squad in Kieran Tierney. They loaned out Ainsley-Maitland Niles to West Brom over the winter and that move left them threadbare in the left-back department.

They need depth in that position and Amavi, still just 26, would offer them that. The £9m-rated defender could also offer some re-sale value further down the line, so it seems to make plenty of sense for Arsenal to pursue him.

Liverpool fans call for Firmino to leave

A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for Roberto Firmino to leave this summer, having been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.

The Brazilian has been a wonderful player for the Reds, becoming one of the poster boys of the Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield and winning both the Champions League and Premier League.

Firmino leads the line in his own unique way, pressing relentlessly off the ball and proving to be selfless on it, dropping deep and allowing Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane space in behind.

The 29-year-old may have contributed a huge amount for Liverpool down the years, but he hasn’t been himself for a sustained period now.

Firmino’s performances have dropped off for around a year, and for the first time, there are now real question marks about his place in the team, especially with Diogo Jota now such an influential member of the squad.

According to El Gol Digital [via TEAMtalk], Atletico are eyeing up a move for the Liverpool star, potentially viewing him as a replacement for Luis Suarez.
