Celtic handed huge Old Firm boost

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side have been handed a huge boost ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final clash, with bad news emerging from the opposition camp.

What’s the latest?

In his pre-match press conference prior to Rangers’ Europa League quarter-final clash against Sporting Braga this evening, Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed that, following his withdrawal at half-time in the 4-0 win over St Mirren last weekend, Filip Helander now looks set to miss the remainder of the season due to injury.

Regarding the centre-back’s knock, the Dutchman said: “Filip Helander’s injury is not good, we won’t have him for the remainder of the season.”

Postecoglou will be buzzing

Considering that the key Rangers duo of Alfredo Morelos and Ianis Hagi have also been ruled out for the rest of the club’s 2021/22 campaign, the news that the Light Blues have suffered yet another injury setback is sure to have left Postecoglou buzzing.

While it is true that Helander had not been a regular in Van Bronckhorst’s starting XI this season – with the 28-year-old making just six Premiership appearances due to a long-term knee injury – the Sweden international has nevertheless proven just how important a player he can be for the Gers.

Indeed, over his 22 league outings in 2020/21, the £3.15m-rated defender played a key role in Rangers’ title-winning campaign, helping his side to keep 13 clean sheets, along with making 0.7 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and 2.2 clearances and winning seven duels (at a success rate of 68%) per game.

These returns saw the £14.5k-per-week centre-back average a very impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.10, ranking him as Gers’ 12th-best player in the Scottish top flight.

As such, the fact that Helander will not only miss the Scottish Cup semi-final clash with the Hoops this Sunday but also the Old Firm meeting in the league on May 1, plus Rangers’ remaining four Premiership fixtures this season, will undoubtedly come as a huge boost to Postecoglou and his Celtic side.

Tottenham: Conte set to cash in on Rodon

A big Tottenham Hotspur transfer update has emerged on central defender Joe Rodon…

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, sources close to the club have revealed that they are willing to move the Welsh international on this summer.

The report claims that they are open to allowing him to leave on a permanent or temporary basis, although they are unlikely to recoup the £11m fee – rising to £15m with add-ons – they paid Swansea City for him in 2020.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Supporters will be gutted

This update will surely leave supporters gutted as it shows that Spurs have given up on his development and do not see a future for him at the club.

He has not played a single game in the Premier League under Antonio Conte as he has not been able to convince the Italian head coach that he deserves regular minutes in the side. From this viewpoint, it is understandable as to why Tottenham are looking at Rodon and trying to work out where he will be next season.

However, they must not sell him on a permanent basis. The fans will be fuming with the willingness to cash in on the Welshman as he still has the potential to come good and showed signs of quality in the top-flight last term. He is not a lost cause and, therefore, should not be treated as such this summer.

In the top-flight last term, he averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.97 across 12 appearances. He made an average of three tackles and interceptions per game and won a whopping 73% of his individual duels, which shows that he was dominant from a physical standpoint – with journalist Ian Mitchelmore also dubbing him as “flawless” for Wales.

At the age of 24, he is still young for a centre-back and has plenty of time left on his side to develop and improve his game. This means that the best course of action for Spurs would be to send him out on loan for a season to see how he fares with regular game time in the Premier League, or another top European division.

If he plays 30+ games out on loan next term and is not able to show enough to convince Conte that he has a future in north London, then perhaps that will be the time to think about cashing in on him.

For now, though, Spurs must loan him out or hand him a chance to impress in the first-team as it is too early to consider selling him on a permanent basis – as his form in 2020/21 very much indicates that he still has something to offer.

Leeds: Orta plotting Galan swoop

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Javi Galan to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), who claim that Victor Orta has already made contact with the Celta Vigo left-back regarding a switch to Elland Road at the end of the current campaign.

However, the report goes on to state that competition is high for the 27-year-old’s signature this summer, with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla also believed to be keen on the defender, while Celta Vigo are not thought to be willing to part with Galan for anything other than an offer they simply cannot refuse.

Orta can axe Firpo with Galan

Considering just how impressive Galan has been in Spain this season, in addition to how poor Junior Firpo has been for Leeds following his £13m move from Barcelona last July, it is easy to see why Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch would be keen on a move for the Spaniard this summer.

Indeed, over his 29 LaLiga appearances this term, the £12.5m-rated left-back – who is also comfortable operating from left midfield and on the left-wing – has been one of Eduardo Coudet’s standout performers, helping his side keep nine clean sheets, registering three assists and creating two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 0.6 key passes per game.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The £43k-per-week full-back has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.3 interceptions, three tackles – the second-most of any player in the division – 1.1 clearances, 34.6 passes, completing 2.4 dribbles – the joint fifth-most in the league – and winning eight duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who The Real Champs dubbed both “underrated” and a “threat” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as Vigo’s joint fifth-best player in the Spanish top flight.

In comparison, over Firpo’s 19 Premier League outings this season, the £10.8m-rated defender has been rather less impressive, helping the Whites keep one clean sheet, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 2.5 tackles, 1.3 clearances, completing 0.7 dribbles and winning 4.9 duels per game.

These returns have seen the £55k-per-week Dominican Republic international average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.59, ranking him as Leeds’ joint seventh-worst performer in the English top flight.

As such, it is perhaps not surprising that Frank McAvennie has tipped the former Barcelona full-back for a move away from Elland Road this summer, with the former West Ham United forward stating last month:

“He’s from Spain so maybe he was never quite up to playing in the Premier League. I imagine he will go back there, he hasn’t done very well at all. He’s had a result in coming to Leeds, he has got his name out there. But he hasn’t performed.

“You have to hit the ground running over here. He will go, he’ll get a team over in Spain. I’m thinking the likes of Getafe, someone like that, one of the smaller teams. Leeds can get a bit of money back for him and they can move on. He can’t cut it over here.”

Indeed, as McAvennie suggests, considering Firpo’s poor form since his move to England last summer, it would appear a wise move for Orta to cut his losses on the 25-year-old – who Anthony Lewis dubbed “awful” earlier this season – this summer, before reinvesting the money received from his sale – as well as his hefty weekly wage – into a move for the much more impressive Galan.

Vieira must keep Gallagher at CPFC

Crystal Palace have been enjoying a comfortable season, with Patrick Vieira bringing in a number of young new players this season to improve the squad, and all of his signings so far have made a great impact on the team.

Michael Olise, Conor Gallagher, Odsonne Edouard and Marc Guehi were all brought in last summer in the French manager’s pursuit to inject more youth into the team, as last season Palace had the oldest squad in the Premier League.

They have been doing an incredible job of integrating into the team so far, with Guehi and Gallagher in particular getting senior England call-ups this season as a result.

Despite building a team for the future, Vieira will have a dilemma hanging over his squad this summer as Gallagher is set to return to his parent club Chelsea when his season long loan deal ends, and Palace will be set to lose one of their most impactful players this season.

Gallagher has been having a season that all young footballers dream of having, with the 22 year old netting eight goals and assisting his teammates five times across all competitions so far this season from his midfield position and was named Young Player of the Year at the London Football Awards earlier this month.

Chelsea are in a vulnerable position with financial sanctioning taking hold of the club recently, as they await new owners to take over the club they are not able to make signings or offer new contracts to players currently, so bringing back Gallagher to play for the Chelsea team could be one of their only options moving forward, which means Crystal Palace’s chances of signing the player permanently are put into jeopardy.

It is clear that losing the £17k-per-week star who was hailed as “Kante with goals” by Tony Cascarino, would leave a huge hole for Vieira to fill if he did depart from the squad this summer, especially when you consider that the Eagles lost three out of the four games he didn’t play this season.

The Palace boss will need to work hard to find a way to tempt Gallagher into a permanent move to the club as he has been a key component to their successes this season, and will be important in the final push for a top half finish for the club in the remaining games of the season.

Sri Lanka run into hot Australia

Australia and Sri Lanka enter their second Super Eight encounter with bright hopes after they were successful in the opening fixtures

The Preview by Peter English08-May-2010Match FactsSunday, May 9, Bridgetown
Start time 1330 (1730 GMT)Master and commander: Mahela Jayawardene has held together Sri Lanka’s batting•AFP

The Big PictureThe last time Australia and Sri Lanka played in Barbados was the 2007 World Cup final, an ODI which finished in darkness and with a third global trophy in a row for Ricky Ponting. Both teams have changed considerably since then, with Australia having only four players in the Caribbean who appeared in that game and Sri Lanka six. Each side enters their second Super Eight encounter with bright hopes after they were successful in the opening fixtures. Australia have shown their power and no signs of the slips that have softened up their previous two World Twenty20 campaigns. Following group victories against Pakistan and Bangladesh and a convincing 49-run win over India, they are the form team of the competition.Sri Lanka, who stumbled in the tournament-opener against New Zealand, lost the rust that their board complained publicly about with a 57-run thrashing of West Indies on Friday. Both teams have on-song batsmen at the top of the order while their bowling attacks are also clicking. Whoever wins will probably have done enough to earn a spot in the semi-finals, so there is extra motivation in this compelling fixture.Form guide (most recent first)Australia WWWTW
Sri Lanka WWLLWWatch out for…Mahela Jayawardene is the player of the tournament so far and a shining example for the team. In only three matches he has flooded 279 runs at 139.50, with a strike-rate of 163.15, and done it while being true to the roots of his traditional technique. If Jayawardene can keep his streak going – he has scores of 81, 100 and 98 – he can carry Sri Lanka to the final. In comparison to Jayawardene’s heroics, Shane Watson isn’t doing anything stunning. However, Watson and his partner David Warner are quickly forging a reputation as the most feared combination in the game. Watson has two half-centuries in his collection of 139 runs at 46.33, along with a strike-rate of 157.95. Sri Lanka will increase their chances of success if they take care of this brutal pair.Team newsMitchell Johnson returned against India as Australia chose their preferred XI, and there will be no need to change unless Johnson’s elbow infection flares. With their batsmen and bowlers firing, Australia have no concerns.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 Brad Haddin (wk), 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Michael Hussey, 8 Steven Smith, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Dirk Nannes, 11 Shaun Tait.Muttiah Muralitharan is out of the tournament after re-injuring his groin against West Indies and will leave a big hole. This should give another chance to the offspinner Suraj Randiv, who stepped in for Murali against Zimbabwe, or the last-minute replacement Thilan Thushara.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Mahela Jayawardene, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt, wk), 4 Chamara Kapugedera, 5 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thissara Perera, 8 Lasith Malinga, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Nuwan Kulasekara, 11 Suraj Randiv.Pitch and conditionsThis is the final game of the Super Eight stage in Barbados before the tournament heads back to St Lucia. The surface has suited the bounce of the Australian fast bowlers and the Sri Lankan batsmen can expect a lot of short balls. Another warm day is predicted for Kensington Oval.Stats and trivia Mahela Jayawardene needs another 39 runs to overhaul Tillakaratne Dilshan’s World Twenty20 tournament record of 317, which was set last year. Jayawardene has already passed Matthew Hayden’s haul of 265 in South Africa in 2007 The last time the teams played Sri Lanka knocked Australia out of the 2009 World Twenty20 in Nottingham. Australia won the only other exchange they have had in this format, which occurred in the 2007 event Michael Clarke dropped himself down the order and didn’t get a hit against India. He hasn’t batted in T20 internationals six times and on five of those occasions Australia have wonQuotes”Whatever the role you’re given, you back yourself to contribute. Opening the batting gives you more time, it suits my game.”

Man City fans rage over FIFPRO World XI

A number of Manchester City fans have been left fuming after FIFA announced their 23 nominees for the Men’s FIFPRO World XI.

FIFAPRO and FIFA asked professional footballers across the globe to vote for the World 11, basing their votes on the 2020/21 season. They requested that three players were picked for each position, choosing from a selection of goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. FIFAPRO then trimmed the shortlist from 55 to 23 players in attempt to reflect a real-life squad.

The 23-man squad consists of three goalkeepers, six defenders, six midfielders, and eight forwards, plus a further two outfield players who received the most votes. The squad is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Alisson Becker, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Edouard Mendy

Defenders: David Alaba, Jordi Alba, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dani Alves, Leonardo Bonucci, Ruben Dias

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, Frenkie de Jong, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante

Forwards: Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski, Romelu Lukaku, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Neymar

City Xtra shared the squad on Twitter, informing supporters that Manchester City duo Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne had made the final 23.

However many fans were fuming due to some quite notable omissions from Pep Guardiola’s squad, despite them romping to the Premier League title.

João Cancelo was frequently mentioned due to his electric Premier League form this season, as he currently leads the City squad in interceptions averaging 2.1 per game. Ederson was also left out, even though he kept 19 top-flight clean sheets last term, more than both Mendy and Alisson (premierleague.com).

Here’s how these City fans responded to the “disgusting” selection:
