Spurs’ Giovani Lo Celso was awful vs Leeds

After tasting his first Premier League defeat as a manager against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, Tottenham caretaker boss Ryan Mason will no doubt be searching for answers over the course of the week.

The Lilywhites looked second best all afternoon, mustering just three shots on target in the entire 90 minutes and eventually falling to a timid 3-1 defeat at Elland Road.

While Spurs’ star-studded attack failed to light up a wet and windy Yorkshire afternoon, it was Giovani Lo Celso’s performance in the middle of the park which surely raised the most eyebrows.

The Argentina international has become a regular starter in the opening weeks of Mason’s tenure as interim boss and was once again deployed in a much deeper role against Leeds.

However, the midfielder failed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and was too often guilty of either misplacing easy passes or just running into a cul-de-sac – one particular moment in the second half saw him simply run the ball out of play while trying to dribble along the touchline.

As per Sofascore, he completed just one of his four attempted dribbles on the day, the worst of any Spurs player, managed no shots on goal and provided just one accurate cross. That sloppiness in possession was reflected by the fact he lost the ball on 19 separate occasions, the joint-most of any player in a Spurs shirt, while a measly 76% passing accuracy rate also told a story of his wastefulness.

In his post-match player ratings for The Independent, Andrew Gamble gave Lo Celso a five, saying: “Completely anonymous as he was dominated by Klich.”

The Spurs Web’s verdict on the Argentine was even more scathing, giving him a three with this assessment: “Lo Celso didn’t do enough to win the midfield battle off the ball today. Also misplaced so many key passes that could have led to goals.”

With just one goal and one assist in 17 Premier League games all season, Lo Celso has been rather poor in recent months, and it’s surely on Mason now to make a ruthless early call and drop him from the starting line-up.

With a talent like Tanguy Ndombele waiting in the wings, Spurs could give the Frenchman the chance to impress his new boss by taking Lo Celso out of the firing line.

In other news, this manager could restore shades of Pochettino if Spurs choose him as Mourinho’s successor.

Wolves man Saiss slammed vs West Ham

Gabby Agbonlahor has slammed Romain Saiss for his part in the goal that Jesse Lingard scored for West Ham United at Wolves on Monday night.

The man on loan from Manchester United opened the scoring for David Moyes’ team with a mazy run on the night as the Wanderers lost out 3-2 in the end at Molineux.

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor has slammed Saiss for not being able to defend well enough to stop the goal from Lingard, and was extremely critical of the whole defence in general:

“Saiss for the Lingard goal, if that was a defender I was playing with I’d be hammering him at half-time saying ‘You’ve not even made a challenge.’ It’s like he had Timberlands on.

“The defence have got to wake up and sort their defending out.”

Saiss did not cover himself in glory

Saiss in particular did not cover himself in much glory on the night, as he really struggled at times in a defence that shipped three goals on their own home turf before half-time.

The Morocco international lost out on four of his duels in total in the match and also failed to block any shots on his goal, while he also lost possession of the ball on no fewer than 13 separate occasions, the joint-second most out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, it was a night to forget for the 31-year-old, who will need to play better than that to cement his place in the starting eleven under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Ref slams Newcastle decision vs Burnley

Keith Hackett has slammed the Professional Game Match Officials Limited’s (PGMOL) view on why Newcastle United did not get a penalty versus Burnley.

The foot of James Tarkowski appeared to be very high and in a dangerous position when Sean Longstaff was about to head the ball in the box, but nothing was given in the end after a check by VAR, after both Stuart Atwell at Stockley Park and Anthony Taylor on the field decided that the incident was not worthy of a penalty to the St. James’ Park faithful.

The PGMOL have since come out and explained their decision, stating (via Mark Douglas) that Tarkowski had ‘played the ball first’ and that Longstaff had ‘stooped and put his head into that area’.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett, who is a former referee in the Premier League, slammed the statement given:

“The most outrageous and stupid comment.

“I suggest whoever made it needs to examine the laws of the game.

“It’s just ridiculous, I just want to know who these people are who are making these statements.

“In football, in the laws of the game, you cannot use the ball as an excuse for a foul change.

“I don’t know who makes it. I shuddered when I listened to it.

“My emails and social media was going crazy with referees from around the world saying ‘Who is this person at the PGMOL making this statement?’”

Newcastle won in the end

It was lucky that Steve Bruce’s team managed to end up winning the game, otherwise a lot more may have been made of the controversial decision and subsequent explanation.

It begs the question over whether the officials are using the technology given to them correctly if a former referee in the top flight is strongly disagreeing with them, and luckily the on-field decision did not cost the North East club any points in the end.

Still, the explanation itself may be the most worrying aspect of the whole ordeal, even more so than the original decision, given that Hackett seems to suggest it doesn’t even abide with the laws of the game.

Liverpool fans want to sign Bissouma

A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for the Reds to sign Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma following another impressive performance from him.

Jurgen Klopp may be expected to be in the market for new players this summer, adding fresh blood to his squad after a disappointing season. Defensive reinforcements look to be at the top of the agenda, but additions in midfield shouldn’t be ruled out either.

With Gini Wijnaldum’s future still up in the air, not to mention James Milner now being 35 and question marks over Naby Keita’s worth, it could be that Klopp eyes up a new face in that area.

Bissouma has been linked (ESPN) with a move to Liverpool as a Wijnaldum replacement, as he continues to shine in the middle of the park for Brighton this season.

He was excellent in the Seagulls’ 0-0 draw at home to Everton on Monday night, taking home the Man of the Match award in the process and earning praise from Jamie Carragher in the form of being called “a top-quality player”.

Liverpool fans want to sign Bissouma

These Liverpool supporters took to Twitter to talk up the idea of the 24-year-old heading to Anfield this summer and called for the club’s FSG ownership to try and land the ‘brilliant footballer’.

Leeds’ Bielsa is making a mistake with Joe Gelhardt

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa appears to be making a major mistake over Joe Gelhardt amid Kevin Phillips’ verdict on the young striker.

What’s the story?

The 18-year-old has been in prolific form at academy level for Bielsa’s side this season, scoring 11 goals in 15 games in the Premier League 2. Despite that goal-scoring record, Gelhardt has found first-team opportunities hard to come by, with the closest he has been to the action being an unused substitute in recent weeks.

That has now led to Phillips to claim that the striker may consider his options sooner rather than later, especially if things continue as they are now.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Sometimes you have to be patient. It’s tough when you’ve got Patrick Bamford ahead of you. He’s probably the first name on the team sheet. But there comes a point where, as a player, if you’re scoring goals and doing well you want an opportunity.

“If you’re not going to get it at the club you’re at, can you go somewhere else and get an opportunity?  It’s a tough one for the manager because he wants to keep everyone happy but Leeds are playing well with the system that they play.  He’ll want some questions answered by the manager about ‘where does my future lie?’”

Radrizzani won’t be happy

Football Insider claimed that the 18-year-old is seen as “electrifying” and “phenomenal” behind the scenes, while Bielsa himself is seemingly a big fan of the talented teenager, with the Leeds manager saying: “He’s a player that always creates danger in a game. He’s a player who’s more linked with the finalising of chances rather than the creation of them. He has resources to beat an opponent and he has a final shot, a finish that is very good.”

So it will surely frustrate Andrea Radrizzani and co that one of the club’s brightest young prospects is struggling to get any first-team action at all this season, even with Leeds having little to no depth up front.

Bielsa sticking with Bamford as his main man up top is completely understandable, especially when you consider he’s bagged 14 goals in 29 Premier League games this season.

But could Gelhardt not have come on for Bamford at the end of games, or be given a chance instead of the likes of Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo for example?

It’s a gaffe on Bielsa’s part, and it would be no surprise if Gelhardt himself is wondering whether he could potentially find a path to first-team football much quicker elsewhere like Phillips suggests.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign a perfect midfield partner for Kalvin Phillips in this star…

West Ham fans slam Coufal vs Man Utd

Many West Ham United fans were left slamming the display of Vladimir Coufal in their side’s 1-0 away loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

The Czech Republic international did not have his best game for the London Stadium faithful as a Scott McTominay goal in the first half of extra time made sure that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team went through to the next stage of the competition at Old Trafford, at the expense of the Hammers.

Coufal never really managed to get going in the match and he had a poor game by his usually high standards. The 28-year-old lost out on no fewer than five of his duels and only managed to achieve a 71% pass accuracy, the second-lowest out of any of his teammates to have started the game (Sofascore).

Coufal also failed to make a single key pass or accurate cross, and lost possession of the ball no fewer than 26 times in the match, the most out of any outfield player to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

These Irons slammed his performance on Twitter, with one WHU supporter even going as far as to claim that the right-back was ‘very poor’:
