Livi 2-2 Celtic: Christie continues abject form

If things weren’t bad enough already at Celtic, their 2-2 draw with Livingston on Wednesday just about summed everything up.

Celtic did well to come back from 1-0 down but a Jay Emmanuel-Thomas equaliser on the hour mark condemned them to yet more dropped points. Furthermore, Scott Brown was sent off late in the game.

The Scot clearly hasn’t been at the races this term and this was yet another example of his foolishness. For someone that’s the club captain, he should know better.

The Hoops are enduring a horrid season and are very quickly surrendering their grasp on the SPFL title.

It doesn’t bode well that even their best performers are now failing to get the job done. That was the story for Ryan Christie who put in a dismal showing on Wednesday evening.

He has now scored just once in his last 16 outings, and after being linked with both Arsenal and Leeds, has taken his foot off the gas.

Christie came up with a golden moment in the Scottish Cup final, curling one in from long range, but beyond that, he has been poor in the last few months.

This was the nadir of his season so far, putting in a display that typified his own struggles as much as his team’s.

The Scotland international surrendered possession far too easily for Livi’s opener and it didn’t get much better for him. He lost the ball on 17 occasions throughout the match, the fifth-worst tally of anyone on the Celtic team.

Furthermore, the 25-year-old failed to provide his usual threat in the final third. He completed just one of his two crosses and didn’t manage a single dribble. Those statistics were down from his season averages of two successful crosses per game and 1.6 dribbles per match.

Writing in his post-match thoughts, David Oliver from The Scotsman said: “Not in the game nearly enough and a shadow of the Scotland hero of last year.”

Indeed, this has been a poor start to the year for Christie, someone who offered so much last term.

In 2019/20, the winger registered 20 goals and 16 assists. Clearly, this campaign has been much worse, finding the net on just four occasions.

Many of Celtic’s players are letting Lennon down at the moment, and Christie is one of the chief suspects. There needs to be a considerable improvement from their attacking dynamo.

Liverpool: Fans discuss news about Georginio Wijnaldum

Many Liverpool fans have been talking about an update involving Georginio Wijnaldum that recently emerged on social media.

In an article for EuroSport, journalist Dean Jones recently provided some information regarding the Dutch midfielder’s situation. The report stated that Jurgen Klopp is set to urge Liverpool to make a new attempt to convince the Dutchman to sign a new deal at Anfield.

The report claimed that terms couldn’t be agreed in the earlier negotiations but Klopp believes that handing Wijnaldum a new deal with higher wages would be a better option than signing a replacement. The manager was the driving force behind the club’s signature of Thiago Alcantara and he could do the same, when it comes to Wijnaldum’s potential new deal.

His current deal at the Anfield-based side runs out at the end of the season. Because of that, he would be free to agree a pre-contract deal with foreign clubs in the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old had joined Liverpool from Newcastle in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £25 million. This season, the Dutchman has made 19 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, scoring one goal so far.

The update about Wijnaldum was relayed on Twitter by Anfield Edition and many Liverpool fans gave their opinion about the news, with one supporter hailing him as ‘spectacular’.

Get rid: Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish must cash in on Christian Benteke

Crystal Palace have endured an inconsistent start to the season but reports claim that the club are set to reward Christian Benteke with a new deal at Selhurst Park.

What’s the word?

According to The Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser, Palace chairman Steve Parish has offered Benteke’s representatives a contract extension to avoid losing him for free next year.

Palace have several players who are out of contract in the summer, with Benteke, Patrick van Aanholt and Gary Cahill chief amongst them.

It’s claimed that the Belgian striker is happy at the club but he could change his mind if he doesn’t get enough game time before the end of the season.

Shrewd move

Benteke was billed with so much promise upon his arrival at Selhurst Park but has turned out to be something akin to a poisoned chalice.

The Eagles signed the Belgium international from Liverpool for a club record £27m in 2016. Since then, Palace’s record signing has been nothing short of a damp squib, having scored just 23 times in 121 appearances in all competitions, which is a pretty measly return by anyone’s standards.

However, this time there is a method to Parish’s madness, or so it may seem at least.

The 29-year-old, who is one of the club’s highest-paid players, hasn’t scored since the 3-2 defeat at home to Chelsea last season, having failed to find the back of the net for the first team so far this season.

Despite his struggles, the Eagles gave Benteke an extension last year to keep him at the club until the end of the current campaign. Whilst a move failed to materialise, despite links to Spurs, tying him down to a new deal would give Palace the chance to try and recoup even a fraction of the price they paid the Reds for him in 2016.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Darren Bent believes his former Aston Villa teammate may never rediscover his best form, saying: “I can’t believe it because I was with him at Villa. He took my place at Aston Villa. So when I think about it everything was tailor-made for him. Every free-kick we hit was ‘hit Benteke,’ every goal kick, throw in, we just hit Benteke but that season, he could not stop scoring.

“And to see him in the form he’s in now and to go so long without a goal, I can’t quite understand it because he was honestly brilliant at Aston Villa. Even some of the finishes, the chests and volleys, every time Aston Villa needed a goal, Benteke would come up with it.

“Now to see that Benteke there and to see the Benteke that we see today at Crystal Palace where he can’t buy a goal, I can’t quite understand what’s happened there. Confidence is massive but the way he’s playing at the moment it’s like he’s got no confidence left.”

Parish must cash in on Benteke at the earliest opportunity, to put it mildly, but in order to so, he needs to convince him to sign a new contract to prevent him from leaving as a free agent in the summer.

The Belgian has received plenty of interest from China in the past, including from Marouane Fellaini’s Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan. Benteke currently earns £120,000-a-week, which Chinese Super League clubs would be able to double with ease.

If a club can meet their asking price, it will then allow Parish to reinvest the funds into the first team instead. Valued at £8m via Transfermarkt, even a transfer fee in this region would go some way towards revamping Palace’s ageing squad, which is the oldest in the Premier League by quite some margin.

There’s no doubt that losing their record signing for a fraction of the price they originally paid for him would be a bitter blow, but when push comes to shove, Palace may just have to bite the bullet and accept a cut-price deal.

West Ham’s Sebastien Haller must step up after Michail Antonio’s hamstring injury

David Moyes has previously lauded the talent Sebastien Haller has in his pocket, but must now see the West Ham United striker step up and deliver more than ever with Michail Antonio likely ruled out of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.

Antonio was forced to hobble off the pitch during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the London Stadium, leaving the Irons waiting anxiously for scans to reveal whether or not the 30-year-old will need treatment for a recurring hamstring problem.

Early signs coming out of the east London outfit from insider ExWHUemployee suggest the news will not be as positive as Moyes had first hoped, likely leaving the Hammers boss without his joint-leading goalscorer who’s responsible for a quarter of West Ham’s 12 top-flight strikes thus far.

Antonio put the Irons into the lead against Manchester City over the weekend when the forward creatively turned the ball home with a bicycle kick, marking his 11th Premier League goal since matches begun being played behind closed doors – only Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane has more.

Any time on the sidelines will deal a hammer blow to Moyes’ aspirations of taking anything from Anfield on Saturday, a ground the Irons have not won at since a 3-0 victory in August 2015.

Moyes has rarely entrusted Haller with leading his line since returning to the London Stadium, with the Frenchman only starting eight of a possible 20 Premier League ties while offering a mere three goals and one assist over 19 outings.

Haller’s record has seen Moyes frequently call on the 26-year-old to show why he was signed for a club-record £45million last year, as scoring in the Carabao Cup was not why Manuel Pellegrini brought the attacker or Felipe Anderson to England.

“Both had big reputations [before I arrived] and I think the games that they have played everybody had the chance to see their performances,” said Moyes, via quotes by the Evening Standard, following West Ham’s Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic.

“I’ve got to say the two of them are great to work with, the two of them are really good lads – I like them a lot. Felipe is a terrific lad, so is Seb. But what I want them to be is terrific players every time they play, and I want them to make a difference.

“I think Seb, a 6 ft 4 centre-forward and you’re leading the line, I think you are expecting much more of that. Maybe Seb isn’t completely that type. We are still finding out exactly what Seb’s attributes are in that case.”

Moyes’ feeling that Haller is not the traditional hard-working, centre-forward type that he would like is considered the sole reason why the Frenchman is behind Antonio in the Irons’ pecking order.

But with Antonio not available at Liverpool and no other senior strikers in the squad, Haller has been gifted a great chance to prove to Moyes that he can be the hard-working type that would see him start more often rather than be a £45m flop stuck on the bench.

It is unlikely that Haller will be able to step in and replicate precisely what Antonio brings to the table, but the 26-year-old can hold play up and bring others into the game, he can score, he can create, and he can cause opposing sides trouble.

But if Haller fails in this test, his future at the London Stadium will be in serious doubt given Moyes favoured the introduction of Andriy Yarmolenko and moving Jarrod Bowen centrally against Manchester City when replacing Antonio, rather than calling on a recognised centre-forward.

AND in other news, West Ham face a huge decision over the future of a crucial club figure who’s proven critics wrong.

West Ham: Fans react to David Moyes’ comments on Pablo Fornals

West Ham manager David Moyes has been heaping praise on midfielder Pablo Fornals, much to the approval of many Irons fans.

Speaking via @whufc_news, Moyes said: “Pablo has done really well. He’s a really likeable boy and works really hard for the team. We’re always demanding more from him because we want assists and goals for him and he’s been doing that. His energy and enthusiasm is incredible.”

The Spaniard definitely deserves the plaudits from his manager. This season he has one goal and two assists, and he has averaged 1.5 shots and one key pass a game (WhoScored) His eye for goal has certainly helped the Irons as they have eight points after six games in the division.

The £16.2m-valued ace struggled to be consistent in his first season in the Premier League last term, with only two goals and five assists. If he keeps up his good form from recent weeks, then there is no doubt he can improve on his record from 2019/20.

Spurs making a fresh move for Milan Skriniar

Tottenham Hotspur are formulating a new offer for Internazionale centre-back Milan Skriniar, according to Italian outlet TUTTOmercatoWEB.

Inter are said to want between €50m and €55m for the centre-back, but Spurs are so far unwilling to meet the Serie A side’s valuation.

Is it Mido or Pedro Mendes? This Spurs quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Daniel Levy and his team have now made a fresh offer for the Slovakia international, and are suggesting an initial loan move, which is to include an obligation to buy him for €40m upon its completion.

It can be suggested Skriniar is currently being left out in the dark by Inter boss Antonio Conte, as he was left on the bench for the entirety of their 4-3 win against Fiorentina in their return to Serie A action.

This game saw Alessandro Bastoni, Aleksandar Kolarov and Danilo D’Ambrosio operating in Inter’s back three for the full 90 minutes, while Skriniar watched on.

It is said within the report that it is now down to Inter whether they will accept this offer and let the 25-year-old move on, but their stance is not yet known.

Conte has openly stated that Skriniar could leave Inter if a good enough offer is to come in for him, so there is definitely scope for the situation to develop.

Jullien returns, Turnbull starts: Predicted Celtic XI vs FK Sarajevo

Celtic will be looking to continue their rich vein of form when they return to action in the Europa League later this evening.

Neil Lennon’s side head to Bosnia to face FK Sarajevo with a place in the group stages on offer for the winners.

Domestically, the Scottish giants are unbeaten and head into this match on the back of an impressive 3-0 victory over Hibernian on Sunday afternoon.

But will the Hoops boss make any changes for this tie? Here’s the XI we are predicting tonight…

Lennon could name a side with three changes as one of his favourites is set to return from injury.

In goal, first-choice shot-stopper Vasilis Barkas remains and he’ll be protected by a back three once again with Kristoffer Ajer and Shane Duffy keeping their places from the weekend.

However, Nir Bitton is likely to make way with Christopher Jullien back in training this week. The £5.4m-rated colossus had been out of action since picking up a back problem a couple of weeks ago.

In midfield, there could be a surprise change with 21-year-old David Turnbull starting over skipper Scott Brown. The 35-year-old veteran isn’t going to be able to play two matches per week all season and the £3m summer signing hugely impressed against Hibs. It’s well worth giving him the runout he deserves.

He could partner Callum McGregor with Ryan Christie playing slightly more advanced in the Bhoys’ engine room.

The width should come from Greg Taylor and Jeremie Frimpong once more as James Forrest is set to miss the trip through injury.

Another player that will be absent is the in-form Alban Ajeti, which means Odsonne Edouard is a shoo-in to return to the starting XI. He may well partner Moi Elyounoussi in a two-man attack.

The Saints loanee bagged alongside the £5m man on Sunday.

It means Patryk Klimala, Olivier Ntcham and Ismaila Soro have to settle for places on the bench once again.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs could swap Erik Lamela for Ivan Perisic amid interest from Premier League rivals

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as surprising contenders to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan this summer, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho wanted to bring Perisic to Old Trafford during his time in charge of Manchester United but Ed Woodward refused to sanction a deal. Recent reports revealed that the Croatia international is weighing up a move to north London in the summer, amid interest from Mourinho’s former club.

Tottenham have held talks with his agent over a potential transfer and it seems a deal could be one step closer to being completed. According to Calciomercato, as per @TranSPURS, Spurs are prepared to offer Erik Lamela in exchange for the Inter Milan midfielder.

Perisic has spent the past season on loan at Bayern Munich, scoring four goals and supplying three assists in the Bundesliga this season, taking 1.9 shots per game (via WhoScored). However, the German giants will not trigger the option to sign the 31-year-old on a permanent basis and he is now considering his options.

The Italian publication claimed that Antonio Conte has no intentions in using the Croatian at the San Siro next season, which has left him in a precarious position.

Mourinho has the answer to his old adversary’s problems as the Portuguese wants to take Perisic off his hands. He is willing to offer Lamela in exchange to sweeten the deal, which could be a shrewd piece of business by Daniel Levy.

The Argentine was a firm favourite of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, becoming the club’s first-choice winger during his compatriot’s reign, but he has struggled for consistency this season.

His output has simply not been up to scratch, especially as the Spurs boss has made it clear that he wants to win trophies.

Clubs are operating in unprecedented circumstances and Mourinho knows that his budget has been severely slashed, so he will have to resort to hunting for bargains, searching for free agents and sorting out swap deals. It is arguably the perfect opportunity for the Portuguese to finally get his man.
