Chelsea boss urged to become England manager to win World Cup

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew claims that England should bring in Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to help the Three Lions win an international trophy, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.Current England gaffer Roy Hodgson is set to leave the job when his contract expires of Euro 2016, which has caused speculation on who will come in to replace the former Liverpool manager. And one of the candidates to take the position is Pardew, who is known to be a motivational head coach that can get the best out of his players.WANT MORE? >> ChelseaÂTransfer News | Crystal PalaceÂTransfer NewsThe ex-Newcastle United gaffer has done a spectacular job with Palace this season, with the Eagles sitting fourth on the Premier League table. However, despite being a front-runner to become the next Three Lions boss, Pardew considers Mourinho as the man he believes is capable of guiding England to their second World Cup.“If I was the FA and wanted to win the World Cup, I would try to get Jose Mourinho,†Pardew told Four Four Two. “You need to understand English players, and he has worked with English players for several years.“It would disappoint me, but I would also be pleased because Jose… he gets it. I couldn’t see that with Sven [Goran Eriksson] or [Fabio] Capello.“Maybe Jose could be tempted, but I don’t know; he is the best manager in the world, and the England job is one where you have to be able to win without the best players – you have to be clever to win a major tournament.â€Pardew got the better of Mourinho this season when his Crystal Palace side beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Caroline Weir, Alex Popp and the 21 best women's players of the 2022-23 European season – ranked

Ahead of Saturday's Champions League final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg, GOAL ranks the 21 best players in the women's game in Europe this season

It's been a thrilling season of women's football in Europe, with so many exciting title chases and races to be in next season's Champions League across the domestic leagues. The continent's premier competition has been extremely entertaining, too, with it set to come to its climax on Saturday as Barcelona and Wolfsburg meet in the Champions League final in Eindhoven.

We've seen new signings settle in brilliantly in new environments, experienced players discover new levels in their game and, among it all, those same consistently world-class talents shine.

So, without further ado, here are GOAL's 21 best players in the European women's game this season…

  • Getty Images

    21Leah Galton (Manchester United)

A crucial part of the United team that finished second in the Women's Super League standings and reached the Women's FA Cup final, Leah Galton's contributions to the growth of her team this season were massive.

She scored in big moments, at the Etihad against Man City and in the dramatic FA Cup semi-final against Brighton, and generally shone with productive wing play that made this the best season of her career.

    20Valentina Giacinti (Roma)

One of the signings of the season in Europe, Valentina Giacinti has spearheaded the attack in Roma's historic campaign that has seen them claim the Serie A title and the Suppercoppa Italiana, while reaching the Champions League quarter-finals on their debut in the competition. There's still a chance of Coppa Italia glory this weekend, too.

Her return of 13 league goals, and four in the Champions League, wasn't enough to top the charts, but it doesn't tell the full story of her all-round contributions to the team's wonderful play, a style she fits like a glove.

  • Getty

    19Selma Bacha (Lyon)

It's been a difficult year for Lyon with so many of their star players missing throughout due to injuries. Selma Bacha had her own spell on the sidelines at the beginning of 2023, but she's been outstanding either side of that.

No player in France's top-flight registered more assists than the versatile wide player, who also ranked second for chances created despite missing a handful of games. That creativity helped Lyon stave off the pressure of Paris Saint-Germain to win a domestic treble, softening the blow of a disappointing Champions League quarter-final exit.

Still only 22 years old, Bacha is set for a big future.

    18Salma Paralluelo (Barcelona)

Salma Paralluelo made a huge move over the summer when she left Villarreal to join Barcelona. As part of the Yellow Submarine, she was battling relegation. With the Catalans, she'd be chasing a treble. Oh, and she made that move at just 18 years old.

Despite the increased weight of expectation, Paralluelo has delivered impressive performances in her first season and some fine goalscoring form. The Spain international started only nine league games but scored 11 goals, while her sole Champions League strike gave Barca a crucial first-leg lead in their quarter-final against Roma.

What a bright, bright future she has.

13 fun facts about Mykhailo Mudryk

Everything you need to know about Ukraine and Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk!

Mykhailo Mudryk is a Ukrainian professional footballer who primarily plays as a winger for Premier League club Chelsea and the Ukraine national team. He was born on January 5, 2001, in Krasnohrad, Ukraine.

Mudryk began his football journey at Metalist Kharkiv in 2010, before switching to Dnipro's academy four years later in 2014. Due to his impressive performances, Ukraine Premier League giants Shakhtar Donetsk took interest in him and he joined their academy in 2016.

During the 2018-19 season, Mudryk was promoted to Shakhtar Donetsk's senior team, however after a single appearance he was shifted on loan to fellow league side Arsenal Kyiv for the rest of the season. The next few campaigns saw him sporadically appear for Shakhtar before again going on loan to Desna Chernihiv in the summer of 2020.

It was under manager Roberto De Zerbi that Mudryk found his footing and finally got his breakthrough. During the 2022-23 season, the winger showed the football world how talented he is, scoring 10 goals in 18 appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk. As a result, he was also awarded Ukrainian Footballer of the Year and Shakhtar's Player of the Year awards.

Due to his impressive performances, Mudryk began gaining attraction from European giants. On January 15, 2023, the winger signed for Chelsea for a fee of €70m (which could rise to €100m) which saw him become the most expensive Ukrainian player of all time and the most expensive transfer in the history of the Ukrainian Premier League.

Mudryk made his official debut for the Ukraine national team on June 1, 2022, in a World Cup qualifier against Scotland which his side won 3-1. Since then he has made nine appearances for his country, failing to open his account for them.

Here are 13 fun facts about Mykhailo Mudryk you need to know.

Afraid of the dark

Like many young children, the Chelsea winger was afraid of the dark and had trouble sleeping as a child. Whenever he would close his eyes he would imagine demons and other scary stuff.

However, Mudryk's grandmother had a pivotal role in helping the young lad overcome his fear. She told him to pray and sign the cross before sleeping, which would ensure that he is protected from all evil when he closes his eyes and goes to sleep.

AdvertisementNicknamed Misha

For family and friends, Mudryk is known as "Misha" which means someone who resembles God. The nickname is very common in Ukraine and is often given by loved ones to young children.

GettyReligious tattoos

By now it is clear Mudryk is devout based on the tattoos on his body. The first is the tattoo with the words "Only Jesus" on his neck. On his chest Mudryk has a tattoo which translates as "Dear God, if today I lose my hope, please remind me that your plans are better than my dreams".

The most expensive Ukrainian footballer

When the winger moves to Chelsea for a fee of €70m (rising to €100m) in 2023, Mudryk not only became the most expensive transfer in the history of the Ukrainian Premier League but also the most expensive Ukrainian player of all time.

While he will have to do much to live up to the expectations of his price tag, Shakhtar Donetsk Director of Football Darijo Srna believes he is the best winger in the world after Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior and PSG ace Kylian Mbappe.

Coutinho, Cannavaro, Pirlo & Inter’s craziest ever sales

With Philippe Coutinho set to return to San Siro with Barcelona on Tuesday, Goal selects the Nerazzurri's most infamous transfer gaffes

  • Getty Images

    Dennis Bergkamp

Dennis Bergkamp was arguably the hottest prospect in world football when he joined Inter from Ajax in 1993.

However, the Dutchman forward struggled to both score goals and come to terms with the demanding nature of the Italian press, resulting in one paper renaming their 'Donkey of the Week' award 'Bergkamp of the Week'.

The Netherlands ace felt the Nerazzurri were to blame for his poor return, claiming, "They said: 'We're going to play more offensive.' And they did, but only for the first month!"

As a result, Bergkamp was only too happy to leave when Arsenal came calling in 1995.

Inter got £7.5 million for the striker but that proved scant consolation as Bergkamp became an icon in north London by rediscovering his goalscoring touch and, more importantly, wowing the English game with his wondrous ball control.

    Leonardo Bonucci

Nobody would question the wisdom of Inter's decision to sign Thiago Motta and Diego Milito from Genoa in 2009.

However, the Nerazzurri erred badly during the negotiations by agreeing to sell Leonardo Bonucci to the Rossoblu for just €4 million.

The then 22-year-old was coming off the back of an impressive six-month loan spell at Pisa, where coach Gian Piero Ventura had quickly realised Bonucci was a special breed: "He's a centre-half who thinks like a midfielder."

As a result, Ventura was delighted when his new club Bari snapped up Bonucci before he'd even played a game for Genoa.

Bonucci excelled once again under the future Italy coach and, inside a year, he had joined Juventus for €15.5m.

The 31-year-old has since proven himself one of the finest ball-playing centre-halves in the world, much to the embarrassment of Inter.

    Fabio Cannavaro

Exactly why Inter felt compelled to swap Fabio Cannavaro for Juventus goalkeeper Fabian Carini in 2004 remains shrouded in mystery.

It has even been claimed that former Bianconeri director Luciano Moggi told Cannavaro to feign injury in order to persuade the Nerazzurri to cut their losses on the centre-half, who had disappointed in the two seasons that followed his €23m transfer from Parma.

However, that story doesn't really explain why Inter felt Carini, who had spent the previous two seasons on loan at Standard Liege, was worth €10m, as much as Cannavaro. It remains one of the most bizarre valuations in football history and former president Massimo Moratti has never lived it down.

Of course, Cannavaro, who has always insisted that Inter "wanted Carini at all costs", went on to prove himself the best centre-half in the world, winning the World Cup in 2006 before leaving for Real Madrid after Juve were relegated from Serie A for their involvement in Calciopoli.

As for Carini, the Uruguayan made just four appearances for Inter before being allowed to join Murcia in 2007.

    Roberto Carlos

Roberto Carlos has long blamed one man and one man alone for Inter's ludicrous decision to sell him to Real Madrid in 1996 for just €6m.

“It's not that I did not have a good relationship with Roy Hodgson," the Brazilian said of the former Nerazzurri coach. "It is just that Hodgson doesn't know much about football."

The former England manager wanted Roberto Carlos to play as a winger but the thunder-thighed South American only felt comfortable at left-back, where he was first-choice for the Selecao.

"I spoke to (Inter president) Massimo Moratti to see if he could sort things out and it soon became clear that the only solution was to leave," he revealed.

So, Roberto Carlos joined Real Madrid, where he would spend the next 11 years proving himself one of the greatest left-backs of all time.

Salah's 36 goals and the best debut seasons in history

The Egypt international has far exceeded all expectations since his arrival at Liverpool, but which other players made similarly massive impacts?

  • Getty Images

    Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

Arriving at Santiago Bernabeu as the most expensive player in history, much was expected of Bale, and he did not disappoint in his debut campaign.

Directly involved in 28 goals in just 27 Liga matches, the Wales international also scored in the finals of both the Copa del Rey and Champions League as Carlo Ancelotti's side won both competitions.

Wesley Sneijder & Diego Milito (Inter)

Signed by Jose Mourinho ahead of the 2009-10 campaign, Sneijder and Milito combined to help Inter secure one of the most famous trebles in European history.

Sneijder's performances saw him win the Goal 50 – though he did controversially miss out on a Ballon d'Or nomination – while Milito scored 30 goals in all competitions, including the winner in the Coppa Italia final and both goals to beat Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League.

  • Getty Images

N'Golo Kante (Leicester City & Chelsea)

An unknown when he arrived at the King Power Stadium, Kante was a force to be reckoned with in midfield as his ability to tackle and intercept almost at will formed the base around which Leicester's title win was built.

He unsurprisingly earned a big money move off the back of that, only to take his performance level up a notch at Chelsea where he picked up a second consecutive Premier League winner's medal as well as both the PFA and Football Writer's Player of the Year awards.

    Ronaldo (Barcelona)

Signed for a world record fee, Ronaldo proved to be a force of nature during his sole campaign at Camp Nou, scoring 47 goals in 49 matches across all competitions.

His goalscoring exploits saw him become the youngest winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award at the age of just 20.

Myburgh improves Somerset fortunes

Somerset delivered a painful blow to Gloucestershire’s season by chasing their target with five wickets and two balls to spare

ScorecardJohann Myburgh anchored the Somerset chase (file photo)•Getty Images

It is hard to walk around Bristol and not see something about the NatWest T20 Blast. Billboards, bus stations and, most conspicuously, the train station are laden with advertising for the season. “T20 cricket in the heart of Bristol” they read – and this west country derby felt like a culmination of that concerted marketing push.Although the result was unlikely to dampen the fervour of a raucous crowd it was Somerset, with a canny performance with the ball and a powerful one with the bat, who delivered a painful blow to Gloucestershire’s season by chasing their target with five wickets and two balls to spare. Johann Myburgh’s 50-ball 63 anchored Somerset’s chase but Max Waller, Sohail Tanvir and Jim Allenby deserve enormous credit for their frugal bowling that set up Somerset’s win.Somerset had won five of their last six away matches in Bristol and, in front of a sell-out crowd and apartment balconies teeming with fans, their quality set them apart from Gloucestershire as they just edged them in all three departments and held their nerve at the pivotal moments.Back-to-back sixes clubbed by Tom Cooper in the penultimate over of Somerset’s run chase with 19 required from 11 and consecutive wides bowled by James Fuller in the final over will be looked back on as match-deciding, and that they were in a chase that became far more tense than it need have been, but Somerset were ahead of the match from the start. The Powerplay, plundered for 59 for 1 by Somerset in comparison to Gloucestershire’s 37 for 1, represented the difference between the two teams. On a pitch that was perhaps harder to bat on than first impressions suggested, with the ball seaming and beating the edge, Allenby and Myburgh used their feet excellently in the initial overs, forcing Gloucestershire to adjust their lengths. Earlier, Gloucestershire, perhaps overwhelmed by the occasion or taken aback by a pitch not quite as true as they had imagined, allowed Somerset to dictate terms with the ball.Allenby, Tanvir and Gregory bowled five outstanding overs at the start of the match, keeping tight lines and using canny cutters. Peter Handscomb fell for a seven-ball duck and Michael Klinger, in such rich T20 form, was also effectively tied down.Insights

Peter Handscomb has made six single-figure scores in his seven innings so far for Gloucestershire and while playing predominantly in T20 – as Gloucestershire’s second overseas player – is perhaps finding a scarcity of cricket a problem in foreign conditions. He is also opening the batting for Gloucestershire whereas he bats in the middle order for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

Although 15 was taken from the last over of the Powerplay, Klinger and Ian Cockbain were unable to truly break free. The closest they came to doing so was when Cockbain swatted a short ball bowled by Gregory straight down the ground for six. Unfazed, Gregory banged the following ball in halfway down the pitch and Cockbain, unable to get on top of it, was caught well in the deep.Waller’s superb spell of 4-0-21-1 kept Gloucestershire down in the middle overs. Delivering a plethora of googlies, which cramped the batsmen for room, and varying his pace and angles expertly, Waller broke Gloucestershire’s rhythm, and deserved more than just the one wicket he took when Geraint Jones top-edged a slog sweep high in the air.Waller’s pressure no doubt contributed to the downfall of Klinger, who was dismissed by Allenby for 44 when he was caught on the boundary off a low full toss. When Kieran Noema-Barnett fell for 6, Gloucestershire were 115 for 5 with just 27 deliveries remaining. However, three sixes, two fours, and some frantic running from Gloucestershire’s lower order squeezed an impressive 42 from the final 18 deliveries to elevate the home side to 165 for 8, a score that was perhaps a tad under par but certainly defendable.Somerset were without Chris Gayle, now at the Caribbean Premier League, and Marcus Trescothick, who was officially rested, but the lack of star-quality made little difference to events as Allenby launched into some loose bowling early on, plundering six boundaries in his 27.It is to Gloucestershire’s credit that they never let things run out of control, with the required run rate remaining above seven and climbing steadily from the 11th over until the 18th. Spinners Tom Smith and Jack Taylor both bowled excellently, conceding no more than six runs per over. Like Somerset, they bowled very straight and relatively flat.Myburgh, a small man, was inconspicuous as Allenby muscled the ball away in the Powerplay, but his innings proved pivotal – no other Somerset batsman managed more than 27. Wickets fell at regular intervals but Myburgh remained until as late as the 18th over when he was brilliantly caught by Handscomb. A lively crowd rose once again to fever pitch as they sensed the possibility of a late and dramatic shift but it never came as Somerset claimed a deserved victory.
