Opinion: Leicester should back Rodgers and bring in this Celtic star during the summer

New Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers will have been encouraged by what he saw this midweek as the Foxes ground out a win over Brighton at the King Power.

The former Liverpool and Watford boss has made the big and bold decision to move from Celtic back to the Premier League, and it will be interesting to see just how he adapts to life back in the English game after ever so nearly leading Liverpool to glory.

However, he is going to need to be backed with some of his own players if he is to be a success, and we here in the Tavern wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him raid Celtic for some talent.

And one man who we feel might be of particular interest to Rodgers is attacking midfielder James Forrest, who has once again been in fine form for the Bhoys this term.

Double figures in terms of goals once again show the talent the Celtic man has, and at 27 and heading into his prime years, the challenge of the Premier League might well be too enticing a proposition to ignore.

Forrest is real handful in both wide and central areas, and with the Foxes having never really replaced the creative spark that Riyad Mahrez brought to the club, the Scottish star might well be the answer.

Quick, able to beat a man and with a keen eye for goal, Forrest would be a fine addition for Leicester and Rodgers.

While Celtic might not want to sell, the thought of having Forrest and the ever impressive James Maddison providing the creativity from attacking midfield is an exciting prospect for Leicester if they can convince the Scottish champions to part ways with their key man.

Tottenham Hotspur: Fans buzzing over Eder Militao transfer revelation

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans are buzzing at reports that Eder Militao’s future at Real Madrid is in doubt as he struggles to break into the first team (Diario AS via Ricky Sacks).

According to El Desmarque, Jose Mourinho is keen on signing the centre-back and has already held discussions about him with Florentino Perez.

The Brazilian international is currently valued at 40 million euros according to Transfermarkt but this price can fluctuate based on how much more game-time he gets at Madrid and how much Spurs are willing to pay. He has only made 13 appearances for the Spanish giants in all competitions this season, keeping four clean sheets.

It is not yet known if and when the transfer window will open following recent events, but what Spurs will hope for is that Militao’s price does not rise between now and then. He will not be able to feature for Real Madrid until La Liga decide that it is safe to play matches again, so in that time the 22-year old will be looking to train hard in order to then try and break the partnership set by Raphael Varane and club-captain Sergio Ramos.

These Spurs fans expressed their positive feelings towards Militao on Twitter, with one fan even claiming that the north London club would win the league with him:

If he anything like he is in FIFA hes the great CB to ever live

Liverpool’s season could end up being anti-climatic

There is no denying this has been a fantastic season for Liverpool.

The Reds are top of the Premier League with a 22-point lead, having won 26 out of 28 matches to date. Not only that, they have got their hands on two trophies already – the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

In recent weeks, though, they have suffered something of a blip. For just the third time this season, they were defeated by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, losing 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano whilst failing to register a single shot on target, and they then only edged past West Ham, triumphing 3-2 after being 2-1 down with less than 30 minutes left.

Last weekend, they reached the lowest point of a campaign that, admittedly, has been with few problems so far – they were beaten 3-0 by Watford, who have spent most of the campaign in the relegation zone, after troubling Ben Foster between the sticks on just one occasion.

The Premier League has been all but sewn up for weeks – Pep Guardiola has even thrown in the towel as his Manchester City side sit in second place. But after failing to lose in 44 top-tier matches, a defeat in such convincing fashion against a team at the wrong end of the table will be a kick in the teeth for Jurgen Klopp and co, no matter how much he denies the importance of such records.

The next few weeks could completely transform how we view Liverpool’s campaign. The return leg against Atletico is a tricky fixture, especially considering the Merseyside outfit failed to score an away goal. Klopp and the players may be talking up the importance of Anfield, but it seems unlikely that Diego Simeone’s men will be over-awed by the occasion. Before that, though, they face Chelsea in the FA Cup. The Blues have not been at their best in recent weeks – they have just one win in their last five – but it is still a tough fixture to navigate.

Two weeks ago, an unbeaten league season and a treble both looked to be attainable objectives. Now, though, the former is no longer possible, and they are in danger of ending the campaign with just one major trophy. Of course, winning the Premier League after 30 years without a top-flight title would still make this a memorable season, but there is certainly the danger of it being remembered for what might have been as much as the Reds’ actual achievements.

The next few matches could turn their season from unforgettable to regrettable.

Elsewhere, this man’s Anfield departure is a huge compliment to the Reds.

Southampton: RB Salzburg Sporting Director issues update on transfer target

RB Salzburg Sporting Director Christoph Freund has revealed that Marin Pongračić could leave the club this month.

The Croatia centre-back has made seven appearances in all competitions for the Austrian side, playing alongside Takumi Minamino and Erling Braut Håland before the pair moved to Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Pongračić – a Croatian U21 international – is believed to be on Southampton’s radar this month, with Sky Sports stating that the 22-year-old is a long-term target of the Saints.

What did he say?

Freund told Welt Fussball: “It is possible that both will leave the club. Nevertheless, we are convinced that we are very well positioned.”

Interestingly, Welt Fussball also revealed that the centre-back is in talks with a club ‘from abroad’.

Promising update

While Freund doesn’t give too much away in regards to Pongračić and his future, he does provide a promising update on a player who, as Sky Sports revealed, is a long-term target for the Saints.

Southampton are in need of a new centre-back given the fact that they have only two options behind first-choice duo Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek, although those backups aren’t the best.

Maya Yoshida – a 31-year-old who has played just five Premier League minutes since the 9-0 defeat to Leicester in October – is one of them, while Jannik Vestergaard, a man who the Saints are said to be open to offers for, is another.

Can you remember how much each of these transfer icons cost? Only experts will get 100% on our quiz…

Additionally, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have conceded the third-most goals in the Premier League this season having shipped 39 goals in 22 games, so there is quite clearly a need for reinforcements at the back.

Freund really keeps his cards close to his chest, and there is absolutely nothing to imply that Southampton are the side in negotiations with Pongračić – however, the fact that the Saints have been linked with the Croatian, as well as the fact that his departure is “possible”, certainly makes for interesting reading.

Kessié is the perfect upgrade for Wanyama at Tottenham

According to The Express, Tottenham are interested in signing Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessié from Serie A outfit Atalanta.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Italian giants AC Milan, but is attracting a lot of attention from a number of Premier League sides, including Chelsea as well.

Tottenham look like they will be going through a major midfield overhaul in the near future, with Mousa Dembélé and Victor Wanyama looking to be on the way out. While the club are well stocked with midfielders with Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and even the emerging Oliver Skipp, they will probably need an extra addition or two in this position.

With Wanyama likely to leave, the club should look to find a direct replacement for the Kenyan, who has been a formidable figure in the middle of the field for Spurs at times, although has been ravaged by injury in recent seasons. Kessié looks to be made in a similar mould to Wanyama, and that should please Mauricio Pochettino.

Formerly a centre-back, Kessié is defensively resolute, but also possesses an attacking flair that perhaps Wanyama lacks. He is the archetypal box-to-box midfielder, and his addition would take away some defensive responsibility from Winks, and allow the England midfielder to dominate proceedings with his passing.

At the age of 22, the 25-cap Ivory Coast international is a player that could have a huge future with Tottenham, and could forge one iconic partnership with Winks in the centre of the field at their new stadium.

Ideal Morata replacement: 75% of polled Chelsea fans view Krzysztof Piatek as perfect new forward

Chelsea’s attack has been a problem all season long, and so far, neither Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata have shown any sign that they’re going to be the players to sort things out.

Clearly, then, if Maurizio Sarri is going to achieve the goals that he’ll likely have at Stamford Bridge, namely a Premier League title challenge, he’s going to need to find a new striker that the club can rely on.

We recently asked fans whether Polish forward Krzysztof Piatek would be a good choice. The attacker has already bagged over 10 goals this season, and he’s impressed in front of goal. He bagged 4 goals in just 1 game in the Coppa Italia earlier this season.

Naturally, then, he clearly knows where the net is, and some Chelsea fans clearly think that he’d be a good fit. In response to our poll asking whether he’d be a good signing, a whopping 75% of polled Chelsea fans have revealed that they think he would be an ideal replacement for Alvaro Morata in the Chelsea attack.

For all of his ability on the ball, Morata simply hasn’t been able to find the net enough as of late, and that’s in stark contrast to Piatek. For Chelsea, then, the Genoa man may be a good choice.

At just 23-years-old, he’s only going to get better, and whilst he’s still inexperienced, he’s done everything right thus far. Time will, tell, though, if Chelsea fans get what they want.

West Ham set for sensational swap deal to land £13.3million-rated Nacer Chadli

According to talkSPORT, West Ham and West Brom are in discussion regarding a swap deal which would see Nacer Chadli moving to the London Stadium, in exchange for Andre Ayew.

What’s the Story?

West Ham and West Brom may well be on the verge of a sensational swap deal, with Andre Ayew heading to Birmingham and Nacer Chadli heading to London.

The Belgian has been surprisingly left out of West Brom’s pre-season trip to Austria and reports of a bust up with manager Tony Pulis emerged. The 27-year-old is unlikely to be a Baggies player for much longer and, with West Brom desperate to land Andre Ayew, talks of a swap deal between West Brom and West Ham are escalating.

How good was Chadli last season?

Chadli had an impressive, if a little understated first season at the Hawthorns. The Belgian featured 32 times in all competitions for the Baggies, netting 5 times and providing as many assists.

While the 27-year-old certainly injected some much needed flair into an often difficult to watch West Brom side, he failed to deliver in big games and seemed rather uninterested toward the end of the season.

Would Chadli be a good signing for West Ham?

This is a tough one. Chadli, who is valued at £13.3million by Transfermarkt could certainly create some balance in the team, providing some width on the left to mirror Michail Antonio’s dominance on the right flank.

However, his performances were comparable with Andre Ayew’s last season and a swap deal would represent less of an upgrade and more of a gamble for the Hammers.

Three issues Pochettino must address to avoid City thrashing

Second meets fifth in a Saturday evening clash. Manchester City host Tottenham Hotspur, with the home side lingering outside the Champions League places. That said, Pep Guardiola’s side are only three points off Mauricio Pochettino’s men, as the battle in the chasing pack heats up.

It is a tense period of the season, with several meetings between the top clubs in the next few weeks, and each match has the potential to set a team back a long way.

The recent history between these two teams is fascinating. From thrashings to disciplined team performances, Tottenham have had a turbulent relationship with their Manchester City fixtures. This Spurs side is different, though, and does not suffer from the same vulnerabilities as previous Lilywhite editions.

Pochettino has his team well-drilled, tactically savvy and functioning as a well-oiled unit. His opponent, Guardiola, is yet to find the answers for City as they continue to leak goals. However, Pochettino still has three key issues to address before kickoff…

Beware of the Backlash

Manchester City’s humiliation at Goodison Park last time will be fresh in the memory come kick-off. Regardless of comments from Guardiola or discussions the players may have had about ‘moving on’, it is not easy to forget a 4-0 thrashing.

That memory will serve as motivation. The motivation of revenge over Tottenham is present, too, setting the Lilywhites an additional challenge. Manchester City will see this match, rightly so, as a final chance to prove their credentials as champions. Defeat here and they can wave goodbye to a third Premier League crown.

Stick or Twist

Last time Spurs and Manchester City met, Mauricio Pochettino’s side set up in a 4-1-4-1 and produced one of the performances of the season to pip Pep’s men 2-0. City were flying high at that point and looked set to walk towards the league title, while the Lilywhites were only just awaking from their dopey start to the season.

Times are different now, but it presents a tricky decision for Pochettino. The 4-1-4-1 worked wonderfully back in October, but it has been the 3-4-3 system that has been dominant during Spurs’ recent strong form.

Rejigging Defence

Jan Vertonghen has been ruled out for over two months through injury and this leaves Pochettino with a dilemma defensively. Vertonghen has been integral in the success of the back three, supporting the play down the inside-left channel when Spurs have had sustained possession, and is one of the league’s best defenders.

While Kevin Wimmer presents a good backup option, Pochettino may favour adding a body to the midfield against City and reverting back to a four-man backline.
