Barreca 2.0? Newcastle eying Brentford’s Yoann Barbet

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle appear primed to make a huge mistake in the transfer market, as reports claim the Magpies are eyeing Yoann Barbet.

What’s the story?

According to Calciomercato, Newcastle want Barbet to solve their right-back problems.

The report claims both Newcastle and Aston Villa want to sign the Brentford defender, with Benitez leading the charge to bring him to Tyneside.

Barbet would be a free signing as his contract expires this summer, but is he really an upgrade on what the Magpies already have?

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

Is he good enough?

At 25, Barbet has bags of experience to offer, making 116 appearances for Brentford, racking up seven goals and four assists.

However, the right-back has never really showed he can perform at the highest level, yet to make a single appearance in any of Europe’s top five leagues.

He is averaging 1.5 tackles per game in the Championship this season. To put those numbers in perspective, DeAndre Yedlin makes 1.9 tackles per game in the top flight, while also offering up two more assists than Barbet has this season.

The last time the Magpies signed a full-back it was the loan capture of Antonio Barreca back in January, who has not played a single minute of first team action since.

The Monaco loanee is clearly not up to the task of the top flight either physically or technically, because that’s what happens when you sign inferior players who are unproven at the highest level. Barbet would just be Barreca 2.0.

Chris Wilder shows no sympathy for struggling Championship rivals

[ad_pod ]

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has voiced his frustrations with fellow Championship clubs who are willing to make rash financial gambles in a desperate bid to achieve promotion to the Premier League.

Such actions can prove costly, as failure to go up can result in bloated wage bills and the threat of Financial Fair Play sanctions.

The Blades are run on a far more sensible model, investing what they can afford smartly, and never leaving themselves on the brink of financial chaos should the team fall short of their ambitions.

Who would make a combined Sheffield XI? Ingood Nick makes his picks in the video below…

Blades boss Wilder has made it clear that he has no sympathy for second tier clubs who find themselves in trouble following financial mismanagement and backfired gambles.

What he said

In his press conference on Monday, as quoted by The Star, the manager said: “Everything goes back to the gambles that teams have, they are prepared to put everything on the line. Clubs are prepared to break rules and break the FFP (Financial Fair Play) to get to the Premier League…No sympathy from me on that…It will be the same this year. Those that don’t go up or make it will be in the same situation as others have found themselves in recently.”

Wilder then continued to explain that the Bramall Lane club take a more measured approach: “It is not a do or die situation for us. If you look at our accounts and our financial dealings, in terms of what we pay our players, there will not be a situation here if we do not go up that will see everyone having to be sold and not being able to sign anyone.”

The responsible way to do it

Sheffield United could well get promoted this season. The Blades are currently in the thick of the chase for automatic promotion and will soon face one of their main rivals for this prize, Leeds United, in a potentially season-defining encounter.

If the Blades do achieve promotion then the club, and Wilder himself, will deserve plenty credit for managing the feat whilst still running the club in an exemplary and responsible manner.

Of course, if Wilder and his squad can’t pull it off this year, then his and the club’s pragmatism and common sense means the future is still bright.

Key Battle: Danny Ings vs Mamadou Sakho

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday evening, Southampton will host Crystal Palace at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints will be confident heading into this encounter, having gone unbeaten for the last three Premier League games – a run that includes securing a hard-fought draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, were unfortunate to fall to a 4-3 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield last time out in the league, and Roy Hodgson will be keen to see his side bounce back from the loss.

The battlers

The south coast club’s key man in terms of offering a goal threat is Liverpool-loanee Danny Ings. The 26-year-old has registered eight goals in 17 appearances for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side so far this season, as per Transfermarkt’s statistics.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Palace centre-back, and Ings’ former Liverpool teammate, Mamadou Sakho will likely be the man tasked with stopping the once-capped England international.

Who will prevail?

Like Ings, Sakho has enjoyed an impressive campaign so far. According to WhoScored’s stats, the 29-cap France international has averaged 1.1 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 4.7 clearances per Premier League match so far this season.

What’s more, the 28-year-old has only been dribbled past 0.3 times per game.

As per WhoScored’s records, Ings has maintained an average of completing 0.8 dribbles per Premier League game this season, and has generally been dispossessed only 0.9 times per match.

Although Sakho ought to know Ings’ game well from their shared time at Anfield, the stats suggest that the striker is coming into this clash with a slight edge over his opponent. Southampton fans will be hoping that advantage pays dividends on Wednesday night.

Landing Aaron Ramsey next summer would be Chelsea’s biggest transfer mistake in years

Chelsea’s squad is strong, but it certainly has been better in the past. Maurizio Sarri has a bit of a rebuilding job on his hands over the next year or two, with a few major signings still needed.

However, one man that is certainly not required is Aaron Ramsey. According to the Daily Star, the Welshman – who looks set to leave Arsenal at the end of the season – is a target of the Blues.

Fortunately, the publication reports that the club are having second thoughts about a move, and that’s absolutely right. Landing the 27-year-old would be a big mistake on the part of the Chelsea brass.

Naturally, the most obvious reason comes in the form of what Chelsea already have. Between Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barley, the Blues have two of the Premier League’s most in-form midfielders, whilst Mateo Kovacic has also enjoyed a good start to the season so far. So, given that Ramsey would likely feature in that more advanced attacking role, there just isn’t space for him in the squad.

However, the reasons also go beyond that. His fitness record should certainly raise concern, with the Welshman only having made more than 27 league starts once during his time at Arsenal. Last year he made just 21, and many of those missed displays came through injury.

There’s also his history. He’s an Arsenal man, and he’d have a huge job to do to win over the Chelsea fans.

Furthermore, financially it’s also a deal that may not make sense. Sure, he’d be available on a free, but Alexis Sanchez moved to Man Utd on similar terms last year, and that’s worked out poorly. Sometimes, just because a player doesn’t require a big fee, that still doesn’t make them financially viable.

So, for Chelsea, a move just doesn’t make sense.

Thoughts?

Oliver Norwood could prove to be a very shrewd signing by Leeds United

According to The Sun’s live transfer blog (8th August, 7am), Leeds United are close to signing midfielder Oliver Norwood. The 27-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion and has done so since leaving Reading back in 2016, although he spent last season on loan at second tier outfit Fulham given his lowly position in Chris Hughton’s pecking order.

And Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds are reportedly interested in sealing a deal for the £2.7 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), a deal which, if they do indeed get done in the last knockings of the transfer window, could prove to be a very shrewd move indeed by the Yorkshire heavyweights.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, optimism has been high among Leeds fans ever since the highly-rated Bielsa took over as the club’s new head coach back in the summer, what with the man labelled by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as the ‘best coach in the world’.

And while that optimism somewhat reduced given their lack of activity in the transfer market, their outstanding performance in their 3-1 victory over pre-season Championship favourites Stoke City on Sunday has got many Leeds fans talking about the possibility of a return to the Premier League.

And while it is only one game, further performances like that one, which was full of energy, dynamism, and ultimately genuine quality in both boxes, will surely see the Yorkshire giants go close in the second tier this season – something they have threatened to do in each of the past two seasons.

And adding the vastly experienced Norwood will only aid in their quest to maintain that throughout the campaign.

The 27-year-old has 248 games worth of Championship experience to call upon in his career in a bid to add further quality and know-how to the Leeds ranks, but significantly he knows how to get out of the division having been a part of Fulham’s team that won promotion via the play-offs last season.

And having that particular nous can only be beneficial in a Leeds side that, in the last two years, have got into positions to challenge for promotion only to fall away as the season drew to a conclusion – Norwood has played his part in a team that kept going for the duration.

And with expectations now even higher after a majestic start to the season, bringing in players of the quality and indeed experience of Norwood will only benefit Leeds in the long, hard slog that is the second tier campaign.

Thus, sealing a deal for the 53-times Northern Ireland international could prove to be a very shrewd move indeed by Bielsa and the Leeds hierarchy.

Aston Villa fans react as Jack Grealish tweets he will be ‘back soon’

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish tweeted on Monday that he is close to a return to first team action following his injury, and Villa fans are delighted with the news.

The 22-year-old would have been hoping to make a massive impact for the Midlands outfit this season as they look to secure a return to the Premier League at the second attempt, but he was hospitalised during a pre-season game with Watford in July after his kidneys suffered a blow during a collision with Tom Cleverley.

Steve Bruce will be looking forward to the return of the talented attacker considering his team has won just two of their opening eight Championship fixtures this season, although one of those came on Saturday when they beat Barnsley 3-0 at Oakwell.

Aston Villa supporters were quick to respond to Grealish’s Twitter post via social media, with some saying ‘the club needs him’ and others saying they ‘want to see him play up top with Jonathan Kodjia’.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

In Focus: Unhappy Everton striker eyed by European giants; Toffees must stand firm

According to reports in The Sun, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku is a summer transfer target for Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus after telling the club he won’t be signing a new deal.

What’s the story, then?

Well, despite reports on talkSPORT last week that Lukaku was on the verge of signing a new five-year contract at Goodison Park, the 23-year-old instead told the club on Tuesday that he would be turning down a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in Everton’s history as he wants to play Champions League football.

That news would have alerted the Belgian’s former club Chelsea – who tried to bring the attacker back to Stamford Bridge last summer – and Manchester United, while Juventus and Real Madrid could also be interested as they look to strengthen their attacking options this summer.

Could he leave this summer?

It depends on a few things.

Firstly, will Ronald Koeman still want a player that he knows doesn’t really want to be at the club? The Dutchman did have a similar situation when he was in charge of Southampton with one of his current players Morgan Schneiderlin, who was convinced to stay at St Mary’s for another year before making his exit.

However, with Lukaku’s contract not running out until 2019, they could easily tell him that he has to honour it.

Secondly, it could depend on the offers that come in.

The Toffees aren’t exactly short of cash and they won’t need to accept any old bid, meaning it could take a enormous amount of money to convince the Merseyside club to cash in on the striker.

How would Everton replace him?

It would be difficult.

The Belgian is the joint-top goalscorer in the top flight this season with 19 goals, and he also recently became the club’s all-time leading marksman in the Premier League era with a current total of 62 even though he is yet to finish his fourth season at Goodison.

It isn’t easy to find someone as prolific as that, but they would certainly trust director of football Steve Walsh, who discovered N’Golo Kante for Leicester, to find an able replacement.

Five reasons this West Ham starlet would be a fool to move to Man United

Manchester United tend to pride themselves on supporting younger players. However, Reece Oxford, of early season West Ham fame, would be a fool to move to Old Trafford at this time. The Hammer has been linked with a move to the North West already this summer and it looks as though he will be subject to interest from across the country.

Oxford starred for West Ham with an excellent early season performance against Arsenal, but, since then, has failed to really nail down a regular place in the side and had to rely on injuries or suspension to get any sort of role in the XI. Slaven Bilic is not short of options in Oxford’s roles, unfortunately.

The defender, who can also slot into a midfield position, only made three league starts for the east London club last season. However, it would be a massive mistake to be lured in by a move to Old Trafford.

Here are FIVE reasons why…

Not so Special One

Jose Mourinho’s invincibility cloak was whipped off last season. ‘The Special One’ seems to have had his golden touch tarred slightly and it will take a storming start to his time at Manchester United for it to return.

Youngsters are seldom a part of Mourinho’s planning, anyway, and his short-term challenge at United will just make that harder for any player of Oxford’s inexperience to get minutes. Mourinho might envisage a longer future at Old Trafford and, if he does, then it might change Oxford’s decision, but that would only happen in a year or two.

Europa Demands

West Ham might look like they’ve got a fair amount of midfield and defensive depth at the moment, but the lingering Europa League campaign will give plenty of opportunity for fringe players to step up.

Despite Kouyate and Noble’s stranglehold on the midfield roles, Oxford would definitely be a viable option for Bilic in the midfield. Oxford’s own versatility gives him an upper hand on many who are trying to make their breakthrough.

Friendly competition

Manchester United, even without all the signings they are likely to make this summer, have plenty of players in either of Oxford’s primary positions.

In the defensive midfield slot they have Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, whilst at centre-back there are plenty of players who have slotted in alongside Chris Smalling. The crucial run of starts that any young player needs would be pretty damn hard to come by at United.

[ad_pod id=’fifa16-wonderkids’ align=’center’]

Pay-day Loans

Jose Mourinho has a penchant for loaning out youngsters he doesn’t quite fancy.

The move to Old Trafford would award Oxford with a monstrous pay-day, sure, but would it help his development? Across the whole of the country, it seems to be so rare that a player returns to have much success from a lengthy loan period.

[ad_pod id=’fifa16-wonderkids’ align=’center’]

DNA of a winner

Youngsters got a sniff at Manchester United this season, admittedly, but that was largely down to an onslaught of injuries.

The pressure for success next season at Old Trafford is going to be phenomenal. Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal will all be piling the pressure on the sleeping giants of Premier League football and there is only so much that can be done with youngsters.

Oxford would be way down the pecking order and unlucky to get much big match experience.

PSG are finally trying to show Kylian Mbappe who's boss – but how long can his exile really last if he won't leave?

The forward insists he won't depart the club this summer, while the Parisians have frozen him out of the squad – who will break first?

In France they call them the 'loft.' In English, it roughly translates as 'bomb squad.' They're Paris Saint-Germain's outcast group, forced to train separately from Luis Enrique's first-team group. They have little chance of playing for the club this season, and are simply kicking a ball about, awaiting a loan move or permanent transfer. There are many familiar faces here: Julien Draxler, Gini Wijnaldum and Leandro Paredes have been there for a while; it seems Neymar and Marco Verratti have since been added in the final week of pre-season.

There's also Kylian Mbappe. Once vice-captain, superstar, and assumed Parisian for at least the next 10 months, Mbappe has been assigned to PSG purgatory, well away from the team he was supposed to lead to a Ligue 1 title this year.

The reason for his exile is clear. Mbappe has informed the club that he won't renew his contract that is due to expire in June. PSG, in return, have put him up for sale, and might be forced into letting one of the world's best leave. For his part, Mbappe has turned around and insisted he is going nowhere.

This kind of thing has happened before, though. The Parisians have been publicly pushed around by Mbappe for much of his six-year stay in the French capital, a string of events in which PSG have eventually caved to his demands. But it looks different now. PSG have taken a stand, and are at least trying to demonstrate that no one — not even Mbappe — is more important than the club.

It's an admirable show of strength for a nation-state marketing tool whose footballing prowess is admittedly limited. They are entering new territory here, and taking a stand against one of their star players, silencing one of the most desirable assets in their portfolio — suggesting that, for once, there might be other, more practical, sporting priorities in Paris. How long it lasts, though, remains to be seen.

GettyHometown kid with unlimited power

Mbappe has always been aware of his power in Paris. Here was a hometown kid, returning to the city of his birth, the Parisian in a team full of global stars. PSG ultras coveted a world-class French footballer to be the face of the team. Mbappe was that — and he knew it. Whatever perceived pressure of the role didn't get to him, either.

Mbappe has scored at least 25 goals in each of his last three seasons at PSG. He has five Ligue 1 Golden Boots to his name, and seems set to be at least a Ballon d'Or finalist this year. Throw in a World Cup win — claimed at just 19 — and there arguably isn't a more successful footballer who so easily embodies his club and country.

This was particularly clear last summer. Mbappe was on the verge of leaving PSG, and, depending on which of the multitude of stories you believe, had all-but agreed to fulfil a childhood dream and join Real Madrid. But the Parisians realised they couldn't afford to lose him, so they caved to every single financial and symbolic demand. Mbappe was made the highest-paid player in history, and anointed de-facto footballing adviser. Mbappe even received a phone call from the French Prime Minister, begging him to stay.

Mbappe accepted the terms. His contract gave him the option to leave in 2024, and included a 'loyalty bonus' for every additional season he played. Mbappe could, theoretically, become immensely wealthy for two years — before bolting for a new project.

But there was also a more sinister, implicit element to the deal. Mbappe had won the negotiations and carved out a very specific role in Paris. He was now the most powerful person at the club, and could, both publically and privately, dictate decision making.

AdvertisementGettyA series of failures

Whether Mbappe was entirely aware of the extent of his influence remains unclear. It is also difficult, and perhaps unfair, to accuse a 24-year-old of being some sort of insidious supervillain dictating the moves of an organisation. There are, presumably, no evil lairs or secret meetings here. But he certainly knew how much weight his words would carry.

So, Mbappe has gone about the last year moulding club storylines, and having a material impact on both public relations policies and footballing decisions. The list of perceived grievances is lengthy.

First, it was his desire to sign a striker to play alongside him, something he made clear in a passive-aggressive interview. The club swiftly entered negotiations for Goncalo Ramos, but were barred from signing him due to Financial Fair Play restrictions. A few months later, it was revealed that Mbappe was unhappy at the club, and wanted to leave. It dragged manager Christophe Galtier and Luis Campos into a media storm, the two giving conflicting statements in the days after the story broke. Mbappe flatly denied the rumour — not that many believed him.

Then, in February, Mbappe took issue with a PSG season ticket promotional campaign. The video, encouraging fans to renew their seats for the 2023-24 season, featured Mbappe — but made no mention of either Lionel Messi or Neymar. Once a few keen eyes noted their absence, Mbappe released a statement, claiming 'it isn't Kylian Saint-Germain' and denying that he had any role in the video that he himself narrated. PSG quickly removed it.

There have been other incidents, too. Mbappe criticised PSG's squad depth following their Champions League exit to Bayern Munich. He took on the vice-captaincy, something that Presnel Kimpembe, vice-captain at the time, was not made aware of. He called the club "divisive" while on international duty.

And then, it was leaked that he would not be taking up the one-year option in his contract to stay until the summer of 2025. PSG claimed that he had only made it clear in early June;Mbappe said he had told them months ago.

web psgScrubbed from the club

The PSG of old would have done everything to keep their superstar. They would have thrown even more money at him, allowed him to train with the first team, and shared pictures of him smiling on social media. Every Mbappe goal would be met with the public adulation of the club. The posters would remain up; the media campaigns would continue to circulate; the kits would still fly off the shelves.

Except, they haven't. None of those things have happened. Mbappe has been silenced, cast aside. The giant billboard on the side of Parc des Princes, a massive picture showing Mbappe in celebration, has been taken down. He is no longer on the club's website homepage. His kits and sponsored products can no longer be bought at PSG stores. He did not appear at the club media day. He has only made one pre-season appearance, a 10-minute cameo in a training-ground friendly with Le Havre (inevitably, he scored).

Mbappe was once the face and soul of this project. Now, he's been expertly scrubbed from the club's fabric. He is not entirely forgotten — Mbappe is far too big for that — but his association with PSG is steadily being removed. Meanwhile, the club have been active in the transfer market in their attempts to sell him. Mbappe, they have admitted publicly, is allowed to leave the club. As expected, there are numerous interested parties for a 25-year-old superstar who will arguably only get better.

PSG have already accepted a bid from Al-Hilal — although Mbappe turned the Saudi Pro League club down. They are reportedly in active negotiations with other parties, too. There has been faint Premier League interest, while an offer from Real Madrid seems likely to arrive before the end of the transfer window.

GettyA team trying to move on

Elsewhere, a team has been assembled without him. PSG's transfer business is overblown and over-analysed every year — mostly because the new signings tend to cave to the desires of Mbappe and whichever megastars the club employs at the time. But this is a planning for an Mbappe-less future, and something vaguely interesting is happening.

The Parisians have addressed numerous areas of need with sneakily good deals and promising prospects. Manuel Ugarte and Lee Kang-in won't sell many shirts, but both are under 24, and appear to be a good fit for this new iteration of PSG, overseen by Luis Enrique. Milan Skriniar and Marco Asensio, brought in on free transfers, will add valuable experience. Ousmane Dembele and Lucas Hernandez are risky additions, given their injury history, but the potential is certainly there.

And the summer's big signing, Ramos, will certainly provide some of the goals missing due to Mbappe's absence. There could be some more activity to come. Verratti wants out, and will likely seal a Saudi Pro League deal soon. Neymar has also been told to find another club. Both will certainly need replacing.

Pieced together, it looks very much like a well-assembled side, with a good mix of youth and experience. Perhaps more importantly, though, PSG look nothing like the series of squads that pandered to Mbappe for years. There is a clear balance, an obvious system, and a manager to lead it all. Mbappe, now, would be a luxury addition, not the focal point of an imperfect side.
