Wolves: £13m Hwang move thrown into doubt

A concerning update has emerged regarding the possibility of a permanent move to Wolves for Hwang Hee-chan, with an attacking player needing to be sold for it to happen.

The Lowdown: Hwang impressing for Wolves

The 25-year-old joined Wanderers on loan from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer window in order to add depth to Bruno Lage’s squad. Hwang has made an instant impression at Molineux, scoring four Premier League goals and thriving in both a left-sided and central attacking role.

The South Korean has been linked with joining Wolves permanently but a fresh rumour has now emerged which could present an obstacle to such a move.

The Latest: Permanent move thrown into doubt

According to Football Insider, Wolves may need to sell one of their prized assets for ‘big money’ in order for the move to happen.

That could potentially apply to Adama Traore, who has been tipped to leave Molineux and linked with an exit, but either way, the club may not be able to fund it without outgoing business happening.

Wolves have the option to sign Hwang for £13m next summer as part of the loan arrangement but another club could swoop for him in January.

The Verdict: Tie him down, Wolves

Hwang has shown what a huge asset he can be for Wolves in the space of a few short months, so it makes complete sense to sign him permanently.

Furthermore, with Traore seemingly out of favour under Lage – his last start came against Leeds United on October 23 – his exit could help fund a permanent deal for the South Korea ace.

Hwang has already looked in sync with fellow Wolves forward Raul Jimenez, with Rio Ferdinand describing their combination as ‘beautiful’, and it would be good to see them continuing to flourish together beyond next summer. If selling someone like Traore is what it takes to get the Korean in permanently, so be it.

Australia ready for life without Symonds

Australia will draw on the lessons learned from Shane Warne’s shock exit from the 2003 World Cup as they attempt to deal with the departure of Andrew Symonds on the eve of the World Twenty20. Ricky Ponting had barely commenced his international captaincy career when Warne, then at the height of his powers, tested positive for a banned diuretic and returned home from South Africa on the morning of Australia’s opening match against Pakistan. On that occasion, Symonds blazed a tremendous century at the Wanderers to lift the spirits of the shell-shocked Australians and commence momentum that continued through to a victorious final against India. This time, others will be required to fill a void created by Symonds – he was ordered home following an alcohol-related incident during the week – and Ponting is confident he has the squad to cover.”I’ve been there before, I know how to handle it,” Ponting said. “It’s about the next guy in line coming in and putting his hand up when required and making a name and identity for himself at international level.”Michael Clarke, Ponting’s deputy, stressed on Friday that the recommendation of Australia’s leadership group to send Symonds home was not personal, but was made with the interests of the team in mind. The leadership group – comprised of Ponting, Clarke, Tim Nielsen and Steve Bernard – felt Symonds’ repeated behavioural infractions set a poor example for Australia’s younger players, and decided accordingly to push for his removal from the World Twenty20.”It’s certainly not personal, the decision was made for the benefit of the team and I think all of us are trying to move on and trying to focus on what’s in front of us,” Clarke said.”No matter what comes along on a tour, as a team you need to stick together and I think we’ve shown that.”We trained really well yesterday, I think our preparation today has been spot on, so the boys are looking forward to tomorrow’s game and what’s happened in the past will stay in the past.”

Howey: Another defensive midfield player ideal for Newcastle

Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey believes that the Magpies need another defensive midfield player amid speculation that the club are linked with Amadou Diawara at Roma.

Diawara featured for AS Roma on 28 occasions last season in all competitions, scoring one goal, and according to Corriere dello Sport,Tottenham, Leicester and Newcastle were all keen on the defensive midfielder this summer.

Journalist Ekrem Konur has reported that Wolves had begun talks with Roma over a one-year loan move for the 24-year-old, so it appears there is currently plenty of competition for his signature.

And Former Magpie Howey believes that Newcastle need to sign another defensive midfielder, exclusively telling Transfer Tavern: “I think we need another defensive midfield player.

“Yeah, just someone to sit in front. I like Hayden, I think he does a good job there, I think he played in three positions against West Ham, but it will be nice for him to maybe have somebody alongside him to help and I think if you’ve got that back four, stroke five and then two, one can maybe drift up a little bit.

“At least you’ve got that protection if Newcastle are on the attack and then you can actually show the other lads a bit further forward to give a little bit more help to Callum Wilson, because sometimes I feel as though he is just too isolated, so another defensive midfield player will be ideal.”

Newcastle have made one summer signing during this transfer window, with Joe Willock joining the club permanently from Arsenal after an impressive loan spell last season.

Steve Bruce’s side have lost both of their Premier League fixtures so far this season, conceding six goals in the process, and are preparing to host Southampton at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Palace fans to Barca interest in Gallagher

Barcelona are thought to be interested in Crystal Palace loanee Conor Gallagher.

As to be expected following his brilliant start to Selhurst Park life, the update has had a number of Eagles fans talking on social media.

Reports earlier in the month claimed that his parent club Chelsea were willing to hand him a first team opportunity next season under Thomas Tuchel.

However, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, as cited by The Hard Tackle, Barcelona have set their sights on a future move for the 21-year-old.

Gallagher has been a regular under Patrick Vieira this season and picked up Palace’s Player of the Month for August with more than 89% of the vote from supporters.

It seems as if his displays for the Eagles have been catching the eye, though, so Palace could find it difficult if they wanted to make his loan move permanent.

Everton eyeing Sean Longstaff move

An update has emerged regarding Everton’s reported interest in Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, Toffees manager Rafa Benitez is monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation at St James’ Park ahead of a potential swoop for the midfielder.

The report claims that the potential arrival of Joe Willock has thrown Longstaff’s future into doubt, with the Toffees now showing an interest in him.

Axe him

If there is serious interest from Everton, or another club, then Newcastle should ruthlessly axe Longstaff and allow him to leave on a permanent basis. He has not kicked on enough in recent seasons and a loan move to a Premier League rival would not make sense for the Magpies.

Therefore, they should sanction a sale in the coming weeks should a respectable offer come in for his services. The prospective signing of Willock from Arsenal for £20m will only push him further down the pecking order, with Jeff Hendrick, Miguel Almiron, Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden all playing more minutes than him in the Premier League last season.

Also, his performances on the pitch when given the opportunity were not good enough to suggest that he deserves more playing time. He averaged a dreadful WhoScored rating of 6.36 in 22 appearances, including 15 starts, with zero goals and one assist to his name.

Last year, the midfielder bristled in reaction to criticism over his performances by saying: “At times, it’s probably been a bit surprising. It’s something you have to take in your stride and enjoy.

“I hold myself to those high standards, so I’ve got no problem with everyone else doing that as well. I’ve still got people around me helping me, trying to get me to where I want to be.

“I’m still enjoying it, and it’s just about staying at an even keel and I know that, ultimately, I’ll get to where I want to be.”

However, the statistics surrounding the £18k-per-week dud’s Premier League performances on the pitch suggest that such criticism is warranted. He hardly fared any better in the 2019/20 campaign either as he averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.37 – scoring once and setting up one goal in 23 games.

Therefore, it could be time for Newcastle to part ways with the Magpies academy product. With other players ahead of him in Steve Bruce’s thoughts, Willock coming in from Arsenal and his underperformance over the past two seasons, selling Longstaff now could be a shrewd transfer decision by the club.
