Bangladesh held back by indecision – Siddons

Bangladesh must grow out of a culture of petty politics and indecision if it wishes to truly develop as a cricket nation, Jamie Siddons says.

Jamie Siddons: “Everyone tends to know what needs to be done but it doesn’t seem to be happening.”•Zimbabwe Cricket

Bangladesh must grow out of a culture of petty politics and indecision if it wishes to truly develop as a cricket nation, the former national coach Jamie Siddons has said.Siddons’ contract was not renewed after the series against Australia that followed the World Cup, where the tournament co-host missed out on a berth in the quarter-finals. He was sad to leave the Dhaka suburbs that had been his home for three years, and admitted his own forceful approach to officialdom had probably played a large role in his exit.”Everyone tends to know what needs to be done but it doesn’t seem to be happening, whether the money’s not there or they’re just not doing it, I’m not too sure,” Siddons told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve probably said more than I should and that probably is why my job is gone. But I want them to do well, I want them to improve and I know the reasons why they’re not, and I just wish more people would listen to me.”In Australia if something’s wrong we try to fix it and we make it known what we think it is, and that’s probably not the way to go so much here, you’ve got to be more subtle about it and work with the right people.”Bangladesh cricket has tended to run on an overly politicised four-year cycle, with long term planning in short supply. Siddons advocated a closer look at other cricket administrations, and also the development of greater support networks for national coaches, the majority of which still need to be hired from overseas.”I think they’ve got to look at other administrations and follow the guidelines, and put people in place that will fill those spots,” Siddons said. “Get more coaches from overseas to start with, put the in the main positions, and get our guys to come in underneath that and learn and develop the players. Make sure there’s a 15s, 17s, 19s coach, that may be it from overseas, and an academy coach from overseas, a very good coach, and put them in place.”Look at how other administrations run their cricket, just take some guidelines from it and try to copy, try to follow. See how you go then. You’ve also got to pay good money to get people to bring their families over here to come and get involved in Bangladesh cricket and enjoy it.”The struggle of Bangladesh cricket to develop at a healthy rate, since a hasty addition to Test ranks in 2000, has been one of the less palatable aspects of world cricket in the 21st century, but Siddons argued that some progress was being made. “I look at statistics, you can’t say ‘let’s go win and make it to the quarter-finals or the semi-finals’, I say ‘what are we doing? Are we getting better or going backwards?’,” he said. “In the World Cup we made 200 four times out of six games, and in the last three World Cups we’d made 200 only three times in all of them.”The five biggest run-chases in Mirpur were against us in 2010, so that means we’ve made big scores in 2010 five times, we hadn’t had big targets chased against us before because we hadn’t set those targets, and that’s batting first against the big teams. Those sorts of things don’t just happen.”Having returned to Australia, Siddons is now an applicant for several jobs, including first-class posts in New Zealand (Wellington and Otago have vacancies) and also in New South Wales. He will be an interested observer as Australia make conclusions about how the national team has lost stature over the past three years, culminating in the surrender of the Ashes at home and the loss of the World Cup.”We can’t stay a powerhouse forever, it’s good to have reviews, it’s good to work out what we think is wrong,” Siddons said. “I’m sure everyone will have their say and hopefully the right people are going to sort it out and come up with the right answers. It’s not always ex-cricketers from 10 years ago who can come up with those answers, so I hope they’ve got the right people listening, they’ve got some vision and it all sorts itself out.”I know Tim Nielsen, it’s not his fault the team’s going bad, it’s what’s coming through and what was following the players who were there in the first place.”

Sangakkara reposes faith in depleted attack

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has reposed faith in his depleted bowling attack for the second Test. The hosts are without the two bowlers who won them the first Test in Galle by sharing 15 wickets: Muttiah Muralitharan has retired, while Lasith Malinga has been rested due to a stiff knee. Sri Lanka will bank on the services of Ajantha Mendis, who replaces Murali, and could bring in Dilhara Fernando for Malinga.”Malinga is a big loss to be honest,” Sangakkara said in a pre-match press conference in Colombo. “He troubled all the batsmen. With Malinga everyone was trying to survive rather than score off him because they know how dangerous he is.”Malinga is effective with both the old and the new ball it doesn’t matter whether the wicket is flat, with bounce or is slow; he is equally threatening on all surfaces. When a player like that goes out it’s a huge blow. We are looking forward to having him in the third Test. He’s going to take this game off, get fit and get back into the fold.”Apart from Fernando, Sri Lanka have two other pace options in Dammika Prasad and Nuwan Pradeep who didn’t feature in Galle. “Dilhara, Prasad and Pradeep have all been quality bowlers for us over the years,” Sangakkara said. “Pradeep has just finished an A team tour of Australia where he’s troubled all the Aussie batsmen who have grown up on quick bouncy tracks. He’s got a lot of pace and he is averaging in the high 140s. Dilhara is in the mid 140s and Dammika is one of the quickest bowlers we have.”These guys are around to do a job for us and whenever they are selected if they are mentally prepared to go and do the hard work in a Test match and bowl in the right areas, they are going to be effective as well. Let’s see how they share the workload. The competition is pretty high for fast bowlers.”Sri Lanka have Mendis, Suraj Randiv and Rangana Herath, who also starred with the bat, to pick among the spinners, and Sangakkara said the final XI would comprise those who were best suited for the conditions on offer at the SSC. “These guys [the spinners] will have to share the wickets and make sure it’s a partnership effort in bowling rather than depending on just Murali or Lasith. We’ll look at all three spinners and pick the most effective ones. With a batting line up like India you need to pick wickets.”Rangana bowled very steady with the ball and he was always there or thereabouts right throughout the game. He didn’t do anything wrong but we just have to make sure we make the right decision for the conditions we have and the batsmen we face,” Sangakkara said.Mendis proved successful in the tour game, grabbing a six-for, and tormented India during their previous series in Sri Lanka, grabbing 26 wickets. However, since then, he has been handled relatively easily by the Indian batsmen. “Unfortunately for him he took about 26 wickets in his first Test series and in his first big final he took 6-13 so people have been expecting him to do the same over and over again. It doesn’t work that way,” Sangakkara said. “Also he’s played a lot of cricket especially against India, the more you play the players get more used to you. He did very well for us in the warm-up game so taking the field tomorrow I am sure he is going to do a great job for us.”Despite the absence of key bowlers, Sangakkara admitted testing the Indian batsmen would be a challenge. “Test cricket is about being consistent – length and line and making sure you put a lot of pressure on the batsmen continuously not for just over one session but over four to five sessions. It’s going to be a challenge but I am sure it is something which the boys are going to enjoy.”

NUFC: Magpies make enquiry over PL beast

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Brighton beast Adam Webster in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that PIF are plotting a swoop for the Seagulls central defender this month.

He Tweeted: “Newcastle. Surprise late inquiry for centre half Adam Webster at Brighton. Right age Prem experience Price would be big all the same.”

Excitement

Newcastle fans will surely be left feeling excited by this update as he could be a sensational addition to the squad and could solve a key issue for the club.

The central defender has been in impressive form for Brighton in the Premier League this term. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.98, whilst winning 67% of his individual duels. This comes after he averaged a score of 6.93 last term and won 59% of his battles, showing that he is improving with more experience in the top-flight.

It also shows that he is a strong defender who is able to churn out consistent, quality, performances in the division for his current club.

He has proven his quality at this level and that could be a big selling point for Newcastle fans, who may like to see players with experience of playing in the Premier League instead of taking a gamble on players from elsewhere.

Whilst he has been performing admirably, Newcastle’s defence has been in tatters. Only Norwich have conceded more goals than the Magpies this season – having played a game more – and this is a key issue that Eddie Howe needs to address before the window closes.

The current group of defenders, barring Kieran Trippier, have been unable to maintain a solid defensive unit and the signing of Webster could help to fix that. He has shown that he can deliver excellent displays in the Premier League and, therefore, placing him at the heart of the defence could improve their record and help them to pick up more points.

This is why Newcastle fans could get excited by this update from Nixon as he could be a phenomenal addition to Howe’s squad. If he can translate his form for Brighton over to the Magpies then he could be a superb player for the club and one the fans enjoy watching boss the backline in the months to come.

The supporters would also love to see PIF being ambitious and snatching a player away from one of their rivals in the league, with Graham Potter’s side 15 points ahead of the Toon as it stands.

Vieira must keep Gallagher at CPFC

Crystal Palace have been enjoying a comfortable season, with Patrick Vieira bringing in a number of young new players this season to improve the squad, and all of his signings so far have made a great impact on the team.

Michael Olise, Conor Gallagher, Odsonne Edouard and Marc Guehi were all brought in last summer in the French manager’s pursuit to inject more youth into the team, as last season Palace had the oldest squad in the Premier League.

They have been doing an incredible job of integrating into the team so far, with Guehi and Gallagher in particular getting senior England call-ups this season as a result.

Despite building a team for the future, Vieira will have a dilemma hanging over his squad this summer as Gallagher is set to return to his parent club Chelsea when his season long loan deal ends, and Palace will be set to lose one of their most impactful players this season.

Gallagher has been having a season that all young footballers dream of having, with the 22 year old netting eight goals and assisting his teammates five times across all competitions so far this season from his midfield position and was named Young Player of the Year at the London Football Awards earlier this month.

Chelsea are in a vulnerable position with financial sanctioning taking hold of the club recently, as they await new owners to take over the club they are not able to make signings or offer new contracts to players currently, so bringing back Gallagher to play for the Chelsea team could be one of their only options moving forward, which means Crystal Palace’s chances of signing the player permanently are put into jeopardy.

It is clear that losing the £17k-per-week star who was hailed as “Kante with goals” by Tony Cascarino, would leave a huge hole for Vieira to fill if he did depart from the squad this summer, especially when you consider that the Eagles lost three out of the four games he didn’t play this season.

The Palace boss will need to work hard to find a way to tempt Gallagher into a permanent move to the club as he has been a key component to their successes this season, and will be important in the final push for a top half finish for the club in the remaining games of the season.

A maior questão é a financeira do país.

Acabou a qualidade no futebol brasileiro?

Classic catches, and a failed experiment

On the dime
Confidence is coursing through Anil Kumble’s veins at present. Today, after losing the toss on a flat track, he decided to open the bowling against two devastating batsmen. David Warner was away first ball with a tucked single to square, bringing Virender Sehwag – short of a few runs – on strike. Kumble began with a flipper on the pads which Sehwag failed to connect with. Sehwag missed the second ball while attempting a feisty drive. The third had some flight on it and he drove straight to a fielder. The fifth too was unable to pierce the strong off-side field and the sixth yielded just a single toward deep cover. That was a top over from a veteran slow bowler against two men who feast on spin.Six and out
No reference to the band that Brett Lee used to be part of. Abhimanyu Mithun’s career has progressed rapidly over the past season, with a superb debut Ranji Trophy season leading to an ODI cap. He hadn’t been a part of his home city’s IPL side until this evening, and the young quick made an immediate impact. Not with his first ball, however, which Sehwag carved over six, but with his second. Mithun pulled back the length and got the short ball to follow Sehwag, who for the umpteenth time in his career ended up chopping it onto his stumps. Mithun let out a roar that matched what the Kotla faithful had been bellowing during Sehwag’s all too brief cameo.Throwdown
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s second draft for this match also made his presence felt early in the piece, contributing to send back the other dangerous local Delhi batsman. Warner got cramped by a Jacques Kallis delivery and bunted it to toward cover, where KP Appanna – another hometown boy – ran in and took out the stumps with a direct hit to run-out Gautam Gambhir. One for the classic catches series
Dinesh Karthik’s eyes would have lit up when he saw a wide and short ball from Appanna. He wouldn’t have known, though, that when he smashed that one towards cover, Cameron White would fling himself to his left, get to the ball with both hands, and bring off a stunning catch very low to the ground.A experiment gone awry
Unfortunately for Bangalore, White was nowhere as sharp when he was given the ball right after that catch. There’s a reason why White hasn’t bowled himself much during Victoria’s domestic season. Ricky Ponting also hasn’t turned to him when he’s played limited-overs for Australia of late, and even White seemed a bit surprised that Kumble had picked him to deliver the 12th over. His third ball was so wide outside off that Steve Harmison would have laughed, and when White sent down some embarrassing half-trackers Paul Collingwood thumped two sixes and a four to round off a potentially game-changing 19-run over. That’s one experiment we won’t be seeing any more of.What a letdown
White got a chance to redeem himself when he was promoted to open with Kallis, but he barely managed to get into first gear. After facing eight deliveries for just four singles, and swiping and swishing plenty, White finally connected to one. Up over cover it went, and settled into the specialist long-off Warner’s hands.Slow coach
One can understand that Kallis, the leading run scorer this season, had been instructed to bat out the innings but what was Kevin Pietersen doing? He could not time the ball off the square and indulged in singles against some disciplined bowling from Delhi’s medium-pacer pair of Rajat Bhatia and Pradeep Sangwan. After scratching his way to 16 off 18 balls, Pietersen was put out of his misery on the 19th – a lovely yorker from Sangwan that crashed into the stumps.Men at work
Time was when a running catch on the edge of the cricket field used to get the adrenalin pumping. But in this time of Twenty20, it’s not just cool to take a catch on the run. You have to give it your damndest. What R Sathish, Angelo Mathews and Adam Voges did in the ICL and international Twenty20s over the past two seasons has become all the rage in the IPL. David Hussey and Doug Bollinger pulled off incredible leaping, relaying and parried catches this week and today Warner tried and just failed to become the third Aussie to add one to the collection. He leapt back to try and catch a big hit from Kallis, lost balance, lobbed the ball up, balanced himself and took the catch but immediately signaled that he was not sure whether his back foot had made contact with the rope. Replays showed that it indeed had, and Warner shrugged his shoulder. But it truly is a sign of the times when such efforts are being made with regularity.

Donald and McDermott on England shortlist

England have moved a step closer to finding a new bowling coach by naming a five-man shortlist that includes two domestic coaches and three overseas candidate

Cricinfo staff01-Apr-2010England have moved a step closer to finding a new bowling coach by naming a five-man shortlist that includes two domestic coaches and three overseas candidates. England leave for the World Twenty20 at the end the end of April and need to find a replacement for Ottis Gibson, who left in January to coach the West Indies.Allan Donald is the likely frontrunner, having done the job in 2007, but Australian duo David Saker, the Victoria bowling coach, and former fast bowler Craig McDermott are also in the reckoning. According to the the shortlist is completed by Dougie Brown, assistant coach at Warwickshire and Stuart Barnes, currently at Gloucestershire.Saker does not have international pedigree but has been coaching at Victoria since retiring from first-class cricket six years ago and has helped them to consistent success. His elevation, over the other, England-based, low-profile candidates would be a blow to the ECB’s own coaching programme.Barnes has a level four qualification and worked with the England performance programme during the winter which would make the England job an obvious progression. Yet he played just 11 first-class games and missed out on a job as Warwickshire’s bowling coach last year.Given the fiasco surroundings Peter Moores, the former England coach, and his lack of top-level experience, England may be reluctant to promote Barnes at this stage. Brown enjoyed a long career with Warwickshire and has had stint coaching Namibia but would be a surprise choice. The two most familiar names are Donald and McDermott. Having taken 291 Test wickets and 84 Ashes wickets, McDermott’s appointment would be intriguing. He has been coaching alongside Troy Cooley, who helped orchestrate Australia’s downfall in the 2005 Ashes before being enticed back to his native country, at Cricket Australia’s centre of excellence and has made no secret of his desire for the England job.”I just put my hat in the ring, I’ve had an interview and so forth and I will let the process run its course,” he told the . “Working at the Centre of Excellence has been a valuable experience for me and also working under and alongside Troy Cooley has been fantastic.”His knowledge of both the Australian set-up and conditions could prove crucial for England as they search for a formula to that can give them hope of defending the Ashes with the Kookaburra ball in Australia in November. The interview panel, made-up of Andy Flower, Hugh Morris, the ECB managing director and Kevin Shine, the ECB bowling coach, will decide next week so that the position is settled for when England depart for the World Twenty20 at the end of April.
