Rilee Rossouw century in vain against Lions

A round-up of the first week of matches in the MTN40

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Nov-2010The Dolphins set the tone for a South African weekend that was dominated by Natal-based sides when they beat the Cobras by 37 runs in Durban. Things started badly for the Dolphins. Loots Bosman, fresh from his trip to the UAE, was out for a duck in the second over. Then, the procession of half centuries began. Cameron Delport (52 off 44 balls), Imraan Khan (53 off 66 balls), Ravi Bopara (80 off 82 balls) and Glen Addicott (70 off 41 balls) helped the Dolphins to a healthy 281 for 6. Bopara shared in a 60-run partnership with Imraan and a 126-run stand with Addicott to earn the Man-of-the-Match award. Monde Zondeki was the most economical bowler for the Cobras, taking 1 for 27 in five overs. In reply the Cobras started strongly. Herschelle Gibbs (40 off 32 balls) and Andrew Puttick (47) put on 69 for the first wicket in 11.3 overs. Gibbs was bowled by Quinton Friend (2-48) and Stiaan van Zyl (20 off 29 balls) joined Puttick at the wicket. Imran Tahir (2-32) was one of the two Dolphins’ substitutes and showed his class as a limited-overs bowler. After he removed van Zyl, the Cobras middle order couldn’t get it together. Justin Kemp scored 37 off 41 balls, but the support he required from Justin Ontong (27 off 25 balls) and Richard Levi (11 off 8 balls) was lacking. The Cobras ended on 244 for 9, handing the Dolphins a respectable win.In Potchefstroom, the Lions beat the Knights by three wickets. The Lions opted to field and had immediate reward. Ethan O’ Reilly (2-33), who Alviro Petersen describes as having “a heart bigger than his body”, plucked two early wickets. Morne van Wyk (0) was bowled with the first ball of the match and Reeza Hendricks was caught behind. Rilee Rossouw rode to the Knights rescue. He scored 102 off 103 balls, with 12 fours and one six, to form the mainstay of the Knights’ innings. Small contributions from Deal Elgar (30 off 39 balls) and Adrian McLaren (29 off 31 balls) helped the visitors to 259 for 8. Paul Harris (2-43) made clear his intention to challenge for a place in the national one-day side with an economical return. The Lions relied on batting contributions all-round to chase down the total. Petersen (49 off 38 balls) and Richard Cameron (52 off 51 balls) rallied to put them in a commanding position after Stephen Cook departed early. Zander de Bruyn (52 off 52 balls) also chipped in with a half-century. Robbie Frylinck (23* off 11 balls) was with Werner Coetsee at the end as the Lions won off the penultimate ball of the match. The Knights will be disappointed with their bowling performance, giving away 20 wides. Dillon du Preez (0-41) will be particularly aggrieved. Despite not bowling a wide, he went for a more than ten runs an over. The Warriors and Titans also contested a thrilling encounter, in which the defending champions beat their northern rivals by four wickets. Makhaya Ntini (1-33) struck early to remove Blake Snijman and Basheer Walters (1-34) had Gulam Bodi out for 5 as the Titans found themselves 22 for 2 in the sixth over.Jacques Rudolph (85 off 95 balls) withstood the storm of wickets and was helped by late bursts from his lower order. Roelof van der Merwe (36* off 32 balls) and David Wiese (39* off 26 balls) propelled the Titans to 212 for 7. None of the Warriors bowlers got more than one wicket.Davy Jacobs led the Warriors reply. His 58 runs came off just 42 balls and laid the foundation for his team. Mario Olivier (2-24) got the Titans back into the game when he removed Jacobs and Arno Jacobs in consecutive overs. Ashwell Prince (45 off 63 balls) and Justin Kreusch (36 off 59 balls) were made to work hard to put the Warriors back in the driving seat. Kelly Smuts (22* off 21 balls) and Lyall Meyer led the Warriors to victory with two balls to spare.Batsman of the week: For the first century of this season’s MTN40 and helping dig his team out of a hole, Rilee Rossouw earns this week’s prize.

CA chairman Jack Clarke wary of India's clout

Jack Clarke, Cricket Australia’s chairman, will be more cautious in his dealings with India following its role in dismissing John Howard as the ICC’s vice-presidential candidate in Singapore

Peter English30-Jun-2010Jack Clarke, Cricket Australia’s chairman, will be more cautious in his dealings with India following its role in dismissing John Howard as the ICC’s vice-presidential candidate in Singapore. Australia has developed an increasingly strong relationship with the BCCI, including developing the Champions League Twenty20, but the board was part of the group that blocked Howard’s passage.A frustrated Clarke said India wasn’t the only country to oppose the joint recommendation of Australia and New Zealand at the meetings in Singapore over the past two days. However, the decision by the ICC’s board to request another candidate has altered the environment.”You hope it doesn’t affect your relationship but it obviously puts a block there for a while and makes you wary, I suppose,” he said. “But we have to deal with all the member countries of the ICC … We’ll have a board meeting in October and there’s no point not rolling up.”Zimbabwe and South Africa were the original opponents to Howard’s nomination, raising their protests outside an ICC meeting in Dubai in April, but a group of six members signed a letter on Tuesday night expressing their desire to veto the recommendation. The list didn’t include Zimbabwe, but India’s strength allowed them to bring Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on board, highlighting a return to the days when the Asian and African countries voted en-masse.Despite seeing Howard “knocked off” by the alliance, Clarke refused to say the enormous power of the bloc was unhealthy for the future of the game. “In any business model where a company has 75% of the income it is not an ideal model, but that’s not India’s fault they do that,” he said. “With distributions that go to all the countries, [India] earn it and distribute it evenly among nine of the Test-playing countries and the Associates.”It is a powerful bloc, it’s a reality of life. But you’ve also got to remember that until 1992 Australia and England had a power of veto [in ICC meetings].”There is a strong feeling that if India had supported Howard he would have had no problems in becoming the deputy to Sharad Pawar, the incoming ICC president. “I can’t speculate about that,” Clarke said. “I’ve been on the board for 18 months, been to seven meetings, I think the bloc vote that was once there before my time doesn’t exist at the same level.”A BCCI source told AFP there was “nothing personal against Howard”. “But we do accept the argument that only a man with previous experience in cricket administration should head the ICC. Howard was not involved with Cricket Australia at any time.”

Cricket Canada CEO says reports on his alleged arrest 'completely false'

The CEO, Salman Khan, had been charged with theft and fraud earlier this month by Calgary Police in relation to an earlier stint in cricket administration

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Mar-2025Cricket Canada CEO Salman Khan, who was appointed in January this year, has dismissed as “completely false” the reports of his alleged arrest and subsequent release on bail on charges of theft and fraud.Khan, along with one other individual, had been charged earlier this month with theft and fraud by the Calgary Police in relation to his earlier role as president of the Calgary and District Cricket League between 2014 and 2016. It is understood that the case was initially a civil suit, but now criminal charges have been laid.Posting on the Facebook page of Alberta Cricket Association, Khan said: “I see many fake and self-created posts circulating around, and I want to set the record straight. First of all, these are all fake. I have never been arrested, detained, or on any bail. These claims are completely false, and those spreading these rumors will have to answer for it.”Here’s the truth: A police complaint was filed against me more than 7 years ago. A police investigator approached me and said he wanted to hear my side of the story and see the evidence I have to defend myself. He told me that if I didn’t provide my side, he would proceed with charges. I told him I would visit after Ramadan, but he didn’t want to wait and decided to post charges without even hearing my side or my evidence.”Khan said nothing had been proven against him in seven years, and he would keep fighting the case. “Let me make this clear: They have nothing to prove against me – in 7 years they were not able to prove anything in the civil case, and certainly not in any criminal case. I have over 21 transcripts, with the complainant even admitting that everything was false.”I am not worried at all. I’m ready to fight just like I’ve been doing for the past 8 years.”

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Sep-2011Wicketkeeper Ben Scott has signed a one-year deal with Worcestershrie following successful loan spells with the club over the last two seasons.Scott, who has been on the Middlesex staff since 2004, has helped add experience to Worcestershire’s side following the departure of Steven Davies to Surrey.”I enjoyed my time at Middlesex thoroughly, winning the Twenty20 and having the opportunity of playing for England Lions, and I’m looking forward to new challenges at New Road,” he said. “The atmosphere and set-up at New Road is superb, they’ve been extremely welcoming to me over the last two years and I am delighted to make it full-time.”In 11 Championship matches this season he has scored 432 runs at 39.27 with a high score of 73 and has bagged 28 catches along with three stumpings.Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket, said: “We’re thrilled that Ben will continue his association with us when his latest loan period ends. He adds energy, enthusiasm, and experience to the team, which will be vital attributes when we look to improve and progress in 2012.

Time to infuse new talent, say former India cricketers

Former India players react to their team’s 4-0 loss to England in the Test series

India’s drubbing in the just-concluded Test series in England has signalled the urgent need for youngsters to be blooded into the Test team, according to former India captain Anil Kumble. Kumble said that while it could take time for India to return to their best, players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh needed to be given an extended run to allow the rebuilding process to take place.”They have to be given a long rope,” Kumble told . “You may not see India come back to the top in quick time. But we have to ensure that with these youngsters, we remain in the top three and climb to the top spot after a few years.”Arun Lal, the former India batsman, echoed Kumble’s view. “You cannot go on with 35 or 38-year-olds till eternity,” Lal said. “We need to infuse new talent. What happened in England was in a way good. We needed an awakening.”India’s 4-0 loss is the their first whitewash since the three-match series in Australia in 1999-2000, and the first by a four-game margin since the 1967-68 tour of Australia. Since Sourav Ganguly took over the captaincy in 2000, India’s overseas record has shown marked improvement – India have won 24 away Tests in the last 11 years as compared to only four between 1980-99.However, the players responsible for several of these wins have already gone – Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly – or are close to retirement, while the likes of Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh, who were part of these wins, have been dogged by injuries recently.Kapil Dev, another former captain, said several of these players would be hard to replace, making India’s task that much harder. “We were fortunate to have such good players all at one time, but they can’t go on forever,” Dev said. “It won’t be easy to replace them.”Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said, during commentary, that while England were the better side, he had not expected India to cave in so meekly. “Losing is part of the game but for a top-ranked side to lose so badly is inexcusable,” he said. “England were magnificent, they were much superior to India and much better prepared. But I did expect India to show more fight than they did in the four Tests.”With the Don Argus-led review of Australian cricket getting a lot of attention over the last week, there has been speculation over whether the BCCI will commission a similar appraisal in the aftermath of the England series. Former captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi said he didn’t anticipate too many changes coming into place. “The BCCI is not going to show a great deal of vision,” Pataudi said. “Cricket will continue [in India] the way it is, but I sincerely hope that some sense does come in.”Ravi Shastri, another former captain, said it was time to look at different players for the different formats, with an emphasis on Test cricket. “It’s time for Indian cricket to identify players who are specifically suited to the different formats of the game,” Shastri wrote in the . “A way has to be found to encourage those cricketers who want to give Test cricket priority. There ought to be superior remuneration or compensation.”

Big-hitting Paul Winslow dies aged 82

Paul Winslow, who played five Test for South Africa as a middle-order batsman in the decade after the war, has died at his home in Johannesburg

Peter Martin29-May-2011Paul Winslow, who played five Tests for South Africa as a middle-order batsman in the decade after the war, has died at Rosebank Netcare Clinic, Rosebank, Johannesburg. He had turned 82 earlier in the week.Winslow gained the reputation of a big hitter and throughout his career attacked the bowling, in contrast to most of the batsmen of his era.His most memorable innings came in the third Test at Old Trafford in 1955. South Africa went into the match trailing 2-0, and in reply to England’s 284, were 245 for 5 when Winslow joined wicketkeeper John Waite. The pair added 171 for the sixth wicket, Waite scoring 113 and Winslow 108. Winslow brought up his maiden first-class hundred with a towering straight six off Tony Lock which sailed out of the ground.Set 145 at a little over a run-a-minute, South Africa scrambled home by three wickets with minutes to spare, Winslow making a rapid 16.Winslow failed in the fourth Test – also won by South Africa – and thereafter did nothing of note in his career except for scoring 81 and 139 for Rhodesia against the touring Australian team of 1957-58 in Salisbury. There was talk of him being recalled for the Test series, but this did not happen. He did, however, play for a South African XI in a match at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria, scoring 12 and 22.Winslow was educated at King Edward VII and represented the SA Nuffield XI in 1947 and 1948 before playing for Sussex second XI in 1949. He played in one first-class match for Sussex against Cambridge University two weeks before his 20th birthday. Returning to South Africa, he played for Transvaal in two matches against Lindsay Hassett’s 1949-50 touring Australian team, making his Test debut in the fourth match of the series at Ellis Park, with little success. In 1954-55 he had a successful season for Transvaal, scoring 379 runs (42.11) with a highest of 94 and was recalled for the tour of England. In 22 matches on tour he scored 758 runs at an average of 23.68, 156 of the runs in the three Tests he played (26.00). Against Lancashire he smashed 61 in only 43 minutes, smiting spinner Jack Ikin for 30 (4,4,6,6,4,6) off an over.He retired at the end of the 1959-60 at the age of 30 to concentrate on his business career, having scored 2,755 runs in 75 matches (ave 23.34) with two centuries and 13 fifties. He is survived by his wife, Moira, who he met on the 1955 tour. She was the co-ordinator of Drive Alive after the death of four family members in 1989.

Journo drops 49ers-Leeds claim

Relegation has become a real prospect for Leeds United heading into the final few games of the season and doubts have started to creep in over their future at the boardroom level…

What’s the word?

According to the ever-reliable Beren Cross of LeedsLive, relegation is not part of the 49ers Enterprises’ plans at Elland Road and their future involvement and subsequent investment could depend on what league the Whites are competing in next season.

He wrote:

‘Paraag Marathe was in the directors’ box alongside Orta, Kinnear and Dallas on Wednesday night. The vice-chairman cannot be at every match because of his San Francisco residence and 49ers obligations for much of the year.

‘This was the first time he had been seen at Elland Road for several months and as the face of the 49ers investment vehicle, his opinion counts hugely. Future strategy on how the NFL franchise does or does not invest further in United is driven by Marathe and his colleagues.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

‘Slipping out of the Premier League less than two years after the Championship trophy was lifted at Elland Road was evidently not a part of their five-year plan in this relationship. Whether Leeds survive or go down, Marathe and the 49ers must play an important role in learning lessons from an abject 21/22.’

Any way back?

It took Leeds 15 years to make their return to the Premier League, so you can pretty much forget about an instant comeback, even more so without the investment from the 49ers Enterprises.

After finishing in the top ten in their first campaign back last term, relegation would surely have been unthinkable for many around west Yorkshire, and that only fueled the involvement of the American party last year.

“We have a three to five-year plan to reach the level we aim, and by staying in the Premier League for a few years we could aim to have a renovated stadium that could become a symbol of our ambition,” current chairman Andrea Radrizzani said in an interview with The Times’ Martyn Ziegler.

Their stake in the club had increased to 37%, whilst The Athletic believe there is a deal in place which could see the 49ers seal Leeds for a fee in excess of £400m by January 2024, but that is surely dependent on their top-flight status as their value will drastically decrease in the Championship.

Dropping back into the second tier would also cause a knock-on effect in terms of the transfer budget, to transfer targets such as Brenden Aaronson – who won’t want to swap the Champions League for the Football League – and maybe even a change in the dugout.

Currently sat in 18th position, tied on points with Burnley after another abject defeat but with a worse goal difference, those around Elland Road must be absolutely worried about what may lie ahead.

It’ll be even worse to miss out on this exciting opportunity from the 49ers.

Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal given World Cup deadline

Kamran Akmal and former captain Shoaib Malik have been told that they will not be in contention for World Cup selection unless they submit documents listing their assets and bank accounts to the PCB by December 30

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Dec-2010Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal have until December 30 to provide the PCB with the necessary documents to clear their names for World Cup selection.”The PCB has asked them to submit the documents about their assets and bank accounts by December 30 to be considered in the list of probables for the World Cup,” Subhan Ahmad, the board’s COO, told .The ICC had extended Pakistan’s deadline for the submission of its preliminary 30-member squad for the tournament to January 5, after receiving a request from the board. Kamran and Malik have not played for Pakistan since their controversial tour of England in August and were left out of the tour to the United Arab Emirates. They have also been denied permission to play league cricket in Bangladesh. The PCB has remained fairly tight-lipped about the reasons for their exclusion.Kamran and Malik had both questioned the board’s decision to not clear them for the New Zealand tour. Kamran had written to the ICC asking if he was under investigation and got a clean chit from them. The ICC had sent him and Salman Butt notices during Pakistan’s tour of England in August, seeking information about events related to the 2010 World Twenty20 held in May.Legspinner Danish Kaneria, who has not figured in Pakistan’s one-day plans in recent times, was also earlier given until the end of the year to submit his replies to the board’s integrity committee’s queries, in order to gain clearance to play for the country.

Newcastle eye Arnaud Kalimuendo

Newcastle United are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain striker Arnaud Kalimuendo, according to Foot Mercato (via Get French Football News).

The lowdown

The young marksman has spent the last two seasons away from the Parc des Princes on loan at RC Lens.

The 20-year-old has scored 10 goals in 30 Ligue 1 appearances this season, putting him three clear of Seko Fofana at the top of the team’s goalscoring charts. Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, he is under contract at PSG until the summer of 2024.

Newcastle have also been linked with another Ligue 1 striker in the form of Reims’ Hugo Ekitike.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

According to Foot Mercato (via Get French Football News), Kalimuendo’s agent is due to meet with figures at PSG ‘in the coming weeks’ for talks about his future.

He is apparently ready to commit to the newly-crowned Ligue 1 champions by signing a new deal, but that hasn’t stopped Newcastle or fellow Premier League outfit Leicester City from ‘looking at him’.

The verdict

Kalimuendo is certainly an impressive talent. He has already played nine matches for France’s under-21 side, scoring on just his second start against Ukraine and adding three more to his tally since.

Furthermore, in 2020, he won the Titi D’Or, a prize awarded to the most promising young talent at PSG.

Franck Haise, his manager at Lens, believes that Kalimuendo possesses every attribute that a modern forward needs, describing him as the ‘prototype striker of the present’.

If the 20-year-old’s parent club can’t offer him the opportunities that he craves, then perhaps a move to Tyneside could be on the cards.
