Man Utd vs Wrexham friendly explored as Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's side in talks with Red Devils over pre-season fixture

Talks are underway between Manchester United and Wrexham for the two clubs to take part in a headline-grabbing friendly next summer in pre-season ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Scandinavia has been touted as a possible destination but nothing is yet confirmed, as discussions continue. The two clubs last faced each other in a friendly in July 2023 in San Diego in the United States, with Wrexham coming out 3-1 winners against a youthful Red Devils side.

  • Wrexham could face Man United again in 2026 friendly

The Athletic report that United and Wrexham may do battle once again in pre-season next summer, with the Red Devils no doubt hoping to come out on top at the second time of asking, after their 2023 defeat in front of a record 34,248 crowd at Snapdragon Stadium.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s side will be acutely aware of the lucrative business opportunity that another friendly against United represents, as Wrexham look to increase their ever-growing global profile in the game. The Red Dragons currently sit in 14th place in the Championship, just four points off the play-offs and harboring ambitions of forcing their way into the top six come the end of the season.

Meanwhile, United are sixth in the Premier League, level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, and will hope to have regained their spot in Europe by the time a prospective pre-season friendly with Wrexham comes around.

United and Wrexham's dramatic previous encounters

The last time the two clubs faced off, Wrexham striker Paul Mullin was seriously injured in an incident which resulted in him suffering a punctured lung following a challenge by United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop, with Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson describing it as a “clumsy, reckless challenge”.

Mullin is somewhat of a modern-day Wrexham legend after scoring 110 goals in 172 matches for the club, and spearheaded the Hollywood-backed outfit’s rise up the Football League. Now 31, he is out on loan at Wigan Athletic in League One.

Wrexham and Man United last did battle in a competitive clash back in 1995, in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie which ended 5-2 to the Red Devils at Old Trafford. Wrexham were in the third tier at the time and took a shock 1-0 lead into half-time, before Dennis Irwin, Ryan Giggs and Brian McClair were all on the score-sheet in a comeback win for the Premier League giants.

Should Wrexham’s current club trajectory continue as it has in recent seasons, Reynolds and Mac will dream of facing United in a competitive scenario once again – maybe even in the league, if their ultimate goal of reaching the top flight is realized.

  • Wrexham confirm new investment amidst Man United friendly news

As Wrexham continue to grow on and off the pitch, it was revealed earlier this week that the Welsh outfit and their A-list owners have sold a minor stake in the club to Apollo Sports Capital. The American sports investment firm – which recently bought a majority stake in Atletico Madrid – will join the club’s ownership and contribute to their ambitions of seeing the side establish themselves in the Championship and sustain themselves in preparation for a push to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Wrexham have already gained three promotions from the National League to the second tier since Reynolds and Mac bought the club in 2021 and immediately injected £2million ($2.7m) into what became the shoots of a highly memorable run up the pyramid.

Manager Parkinson said of the latest investment, reported by BBC Sport Wales: "I think it's really positive news for the club. It helps the club moving forward and building a sustainable club for the future. It's a great, positive story. Everybody's looking forward to working with the new investors.

"Everything stays the same football-wise, but Michael [Williamson, club chief executive officer] has kept me informed over the last few weeks. I was aware that there was something going on a while ago," added Parkinson.

"It's about putting those building blocks in place for the short and long-term. This is another step towards that. We're a club that's building all the time, on and off the pitch, and this is another step in that direction."

Guardiola wants Man City to increase £88m offer to sign Real Madrid star

A new update has emerged regarding Manchester City’s pursuit of Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning attacking midfielder Arda Guler, with Pep Guardiola’s stance made clear.

The Turk is arguably one of the most talented and exciting young attackers in Europe currently, gradually becoming more of a key man for La Liga giants Madrid.

Guler has started 10 league games so far this season, scoring three goals and bagging five assists, while Madrid legend Toni Kroos has lauded him, also discussing comparisons between the pair.

“But I don’t believe in comparisons. Arda is also a different type of player than me. His best position is much more attacking than mine, so it’s not about me succeeding him at all. But I’m generally pleased because he’s a good lad. I’ve played alongside him.

“He has a really delicate touch, which he’s already used very effectively for Real this season. That’s why I hope he continues to get consistent playing time, because that’s the only way to improve. Then I’m sure he can make his mark at Real for many years to come.”

At 20 years of age, Guler has an enormous amount of potential, and while Madrid are no doubt hesitant to allow him to leave, it looks as though he remains on City’s radar.

Guardiola wants Man City offer for Guler increased

According to a report from Spain, Manchester City are readying an offer of £88m for Guler, but that won’t be accepted by Madrid, who will demand more for his signature.

Guardiola has asked ‘whether it’s feasible to increase the offer’, though, no doubt considering him a player who he values greatly, as he looks to snap up some of the biggest young talents in the game.

The idea of Guler in a City shirt is a mouthwatering prospect, with the Turkey star someone who could fit perfectly into Guardiola’s style of play, with his technical ability right up there with the best in Europe.

Like Phil Foden, he possesses an effortless class with his left foot, being capable of drifting in off the right flank or adopting a No.10 role, while Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has lauded him.

“With his quality, he’s a mix between Ozil and Guti. Guti had that vision and finesse to link play or operate closer to goal, and with Mesut I enjoyed football so much. Arda has that something special – that natural talent you can’t teach.”

For now, it looks as though Madrid are going to be stubborn in allowing Guler to leave the club, but City and Guardiola should continue to pursue him as a top target, given his world-class long-term potential.

Damien Comolli gets a promotion! Ex-Liverpool and Tottenham director made Juventus CEO less than six months after joining Serie A club

Juventus have confirmed the promotion of Damien Comolli to CEO, just months after he arrived to oversee the club’s sporting department. The French executive replaces Maurizio Scanavino following a reshuffle approved by the board of directors. Backed by owner John Elkann, Comolli will now lead the Bianconeri’s long-term rebuild on and off the pitch.

Former Premier League executive promoted to CEO

Juve have announced the appointment of Comolli as their new chief executive, following Tuesday’s meeting of the club’s board. The decision marks a rapid elevation for Comolli, who only joined the club in the summer after departing Toulouse, where he served as president for five years and oversaw a return to Ligue 1 and subsequent European qualification.

Comolli initially stepped into the role of general manager at Juve after the departure of Cristiano Giuntoli and his technical staff earlier in the summer. However, the board has now opted to streamline the organisational structure by removing the General Manager position altogether and granting Comolli full executive authority. The official club statement read: “The Board of Directors has appointed Damien Comolli as CEO, with the simultaneous termination of the previous role of General Manager, granting him administrative powers substantially in continuity with the previous structure.”

Comolli replaces Scanavino, whose mandate concluded on November 7. The promotion makes Comolli the central decision-maker across both corporate and sporting operations, positioning him at the heart of Juventus’ strategic rebuild during a critical period for the club, both competitively and financially.

Advertisement'Winning must be an obsession' – Comolli sets ambition

Speaking during his official presentation at the Allianz Stadium, Comolli made his intentions unmistakably clear. “I’m obsessed with winning, every day I think about how to do it: in a club like this, winning must be an obsession,” he said.

Comolli also emphasised his alignment with Juventus’ ownership group, led by Exor chairman Elkann. “Elkann is passionate about football just like me, he always wants to win, and his commitment to Juve is tangible,” he stated. The new CEO described the opportunity as both “a privilege and a great honor,” adding: “I approach it with ambition and modesty; the only thing we want is to get back to winning.”

The former Liverpool and Tottenham sporting director has long been regarded as a meticulous planner and strong advocate of data-driven squad building. His appointment signals Bianconeri's desire to modernise their operational structure and reinforce the club's identity after several turbulent seasons marked by board resignations, legal scrutiny and inconsistent on-field results.

Board confirms internal leadership alignment

Alongside Comolli’s promotion, the Juventus board confirmed the formal establishment of new committee assignments. The control and risk committee will consist of Fioranna Vittoria Negri, Antonio Belloni and Guido de Boer. The related-party transactions committee will feature Cappiello, Diva Moriani, and Negri.

The club also reaffirmed executive responsibilities across compliance, auditing, and sustainability. Stefano Cerrato continues as the executive and Investor Relator, Mauro Plati remains in charge of risk and internal audit, and Greta Bodino continues overseeing people, culture, and ESG strategy. These internal confirmations ensure continuity during a period of structural change and strategic realignment.

AFPNew era begins as Juventus chase stability and silverware

Comolli’s first major task will be guiding Juve through the next transfer window and finalising the club’s sporting leadership team. Alongside Giorgio Chiellini and sporting coordinator Julien Modesto, he is expected to confirm the appointment of a new sporting director. Marco Ottolini, formerly of Genoa and previously part of Juventus’ scouting and loan department, remains the leading candidate for the role.

On the pitch, Juve are competing to find themselves in the Champions League and stabilise the squad following recent transitional campaigns. Comolli’s focus will extend beyond recruitment to rebuilding Juventus’ competitive identity and financial sustainability.

The upcoming months will be decisive in determining whether Comolli’s leadership can restore Juve to the consistent trophy-winning force they once were. The club faces pressing strategic decisions, including contract renewals, academy integration, and managing wage efficiencies, all while competing in Serie A and Europe.

The Turin side recently appoints Luciano Spalletti to restore stability on the field after sacking coach Ivan Juric this month.

Moyes has unearthed Everton's brand new Fellaini with "enormous potential"

David Moyes has made a strong start to his second spell in charge of Everton, but it will take a lot to match what he achieved in his first stint on Merseyside. The Scot had a 12-year reign at Goodison Park first time around, where he managed 518 games, winning 221 of them.

Although he never guided the Toffees to any silverware, Moyes, who left the club to manage Manchester United in 2013, turned them into a consistent top-four challenger.

Fourth place was the highest he took the club in 2004/05, finishing in the top half eight other times.

Moyes had some iconic players at his disposal in that first spell, with Marouane Fellaini one that springs to mind.

Fellaini’s time under Moyes at Everton

Belgian international Fellaini is certainly someone who could be classed as a cult hero of the Premier League. The now 37-year-old was brought to Goodison Park by Moyes in 2008/09, joining from Standard Liege, whose academy he is a graduate of.

Well, the midfielder, who stands at six foot four, shone under Moyes during their time together on Merseyside.

He played 173 times under the Scot in that famous Blue shirt, scoring 32 goals and assisting 24.

His best campaign came in the final season the pair spent together at Goodison Park, 2012/13. That season, Fellaini scored 11 times and chipped in with five assists in 31 top-flight games.

He was a huge aerial threat, with this header in the season opener against Man United an example of how deadly he could be in the opposition box.

The Everton manager clearly appreciated a player of Fellaini’s profile in his squad. Back in 2011, he explained in an interview that “he is a bigger threat than most because of his size, he can create goals and can be disruptive to the opposition.”

Of course, now Moyes is the Toffees manager once again, he might be looking for their new Fellaini. Over the summer, he may have signed the perfect player to execute the role.

Moyes’ new Fellaini

When looking to replicate Fellaini, it is clear what profile Moyes needs in his squad. A tall, physical midfielder who is strong in duels and can have an impact crashing the box, looking to get on the end of crosses and disrupt play.

This summer, Everton signed 23-year-old German midfielder Merlin Rohl on loan from Freiburg, with an obligation to buy him for £17.3m at the end of the season.

Well, standing at 6 foot 4 himself, Rohl could be the ideal candidate to fill the Fellaini role.

Although he’s only played once for Everton so far, after picking up an injury, the Berlin-born midfielder showed his value in a Freiburg shirt. In 60 appearances, he bagged three goals and assisted six.

This strike in the Europa League shows exactly the kind of chaos he can cause in the opposition penalty box.

Indeed, the underlying numbers from his last two full seasons in the Bundesliga show how much of a threat he can be in and out of possession.

For example, he won an average of 5.7 duels per 90 minutes last season, and the campaign before created 1.2 chances each game.

One of the real strengths of Rohl’s game is the versatility he can bring to Everton’s side. The 23-year-old, described by Klemens Hartenbach as a player with “enormous potential,” can operate anywhere in midfield and has even played out wide.

This was something that Everton tactical analyst Matt Smith pointed out over on X, explaining he is “capable of playing in multiple positions” in midfield. Yet, Smith said that he sees Rohl “playing slightly deeper” in the future.

With his height, goal threat and ability to win duels in midfield, it is easy to see how Rohl can become Moyes’ new Fellaini.

He is certainly a unique profile in this Everton squad, and, once he is back from injury, it will be fascinating to see how the Scot deploys him.

VIDEO: USMNT star Ricardo Pepi matches Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Aguero with another late Champions League goal for PSV

Ricardo Pepi made his mark off the bench once again, scoring a stoppage-time equalizer for PSV against Olympiacos on Tuesday to earn them a crucial Champions League point. The goal was Pepi's third in four games in all competitions, despite playing a grand total of 75 minutes across those matches. PSV now have five points through UCL four games.

AFPPepi's late goal

Pepi's goal came in the 93rd minute with his side trailing, 1-0, and seemingly destined for a Champions League defeat. PSV, though, were given a late lifeline via a free kick, but the initial ball in resulted in a shot that was blocked away.

The ball fell to Pepi, and he made no mistake, firing a first-time finish into the back of the net to earn PSV a crucial point via a 1-1 draw. With the draw, PSV are 17th midway through Matchday Four in Europe's premier competition.

AdvertisementWatch the goalGetty ImagesMatching icons

Pepi has proven clutch for PSV throughout his time with the Dutch club, but the American striker's latest big moment was enough to see him match a mark previously put up by some of the game's most recognizable legends.

Per Opta, Pepi's goal was his third result-changing goal in stoppage time of a Champions League match. Only two other players in history have scored as many: Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Aguero.

Pepi has three goals so far this season to go with two in the Champions League, with the previous finish coming against Napoli in a six-minute cameo that produced a goal and an assist.

AFPWhat comes next?

The U.S. men's national team is set to gather next week for November camp, and will play Paraguay and Uruguay in their final matches of 2025. The squad for that camp is set to be released and, given his run of form, Pepi seems likely to be selected, fitness pending.

He still faces a fight to get back into PSV's starting XI, though, and that could continue on Sunday when the Dutch giants, second in the Eredivisie, visit third-place AZ Alkmaar.

Waseem and UAE make history after acing 206 chase against Bangladesh

The home side held their nerve in a dramatic final over to seal their first ever T20I win against Bangladesh

Mohammad Isam19-May-2025
UAE held their nerve in a last-gasp finish in Sharjah, and eventually completed a famous two-wicket win against Bangladesh in the second T20I.It was a historic effort from the hosts to win for the first time against Bangladesh, chasing down 206 with a ball to spare. UAE captain Muhammad Waseem’s 82 held the innings together, striking nine fours and five sixes from 42 balls. But it was how UAE reacted after Waseem’s departure, with 58 runs still left in the chase, that spoke of their character. Every player hit at least one six from No. 7 onwards, with Dhruv Parashar keeping his cool in the last over. Haider Ali struck the winning runs off Tanzim Hasan off the penultimate ball. Although it was a free hit, both Haider and Matiullah Khan were in a mix-up. Towhid Hridoy, inexplicably, didn’t throw the ball on the first attempt. By the time the throw came in, Haider had completed the two runs that gave UAE the famous win.Related

Waseem leads the chargeUAE’s chase started with a stroke of luck when Najmul Hossain Shanto couldn’t latch on to a tough chance off Muhammad Zohaib’s outside edge, off the first ball. Waseem, though, took off from where he left off in the first game. He launched Tanvir Islam out of the stadium in the second over. This one didn’t even bounce on the roof, but went straight out of the ground into the trees. He struck Tanzim over midwicket with a swing of the bat, before slog-sweeping Tanvir in the next over, for his third six. Waseem also took a liking to Rana’s pace, tonking him three time in the ninth over, straight, through the covers and over point. He lifted Rishad over long-on for his fourth six to complete a century opening stand.UAE lost two wickets in the 11th and 12th overs but Bangladesh couldn’t make it three in a row. Hridoy dropped Waseem, who was batting on 63, in the 13th over. He clattered Tanvir for his fifth six soon afterwards, as he got the chase immediately back on track.Rana’s horror startNahid Rana has made an impressive start in Tests and ODIs, so there was hope and hype about his T20I debut. He, however, couldn’t quite release the ball properly in his first over. He dropped one too short first ball, before bowling a beamer next ball. Both were no-balls, before Zohaib top edged a catch to cover off the free hit.Rana couldn’t get his bearing right, bowling a big wide down the leg-side next, before Waseem cracked him twice through point for consecutive fours. It could have been a third four but Hridoy stopped a sharp blow at midwicket at the 30-yard line. Nahid went for 18 in his first over.Big guns’ exit scares UAEUAE were still doing well when Asif Khan slammed Tanzim for consecutive sixes in the 14th over. The second was a special shot, a flat blow through the covers. Shoriful Islam, however, got the better of Waseem in the following over, getting him caught behind with a slower delivery. Jaker took a splendid catch, diving well to his right. Rana, smarting after two expensive overs, hit back with Asif’s wicket. He got the big hitter to slog at a hard length. Rana took the catch off his own bowling, giving Bangladesh a vital edge in the contest.A near three-way collisionRana could have had another wicket but the captain Litton Das, Rishad and Tanzid nearly collided to take Saghir Khan’s catch. The ball went down, before Saghir cracked Rishad for a six over long on. He, however, fell next ball, getting caught at long-off. Aryansh Sharma repeated Saghir’s formula, top-edging Rana for a six before getting caught and bowled one ball later. Shoriful started the penultimate over by removing Alishan Sharafu, giving Bangladesh another boost. The UAE players celebrate a first ever T20I win over Bangladesh•Emirates Cricket BoardParashar stands tallParashar, however, didn’t get fazed by the wickets at the other end, slamming Shorfiul for a four over mid-on, and six through point. With 17 to win off the last seven balls, Shoriful conceded five overthrows by throwing at the non-striker’s end.Tanzim started the 12-run defense in the last over with a wide down the leg side. Parashar then posted Tanzim’s full-toss high over long-on for a six, leaving just four needed off the remaining four balls. He however fell next ball, before Matiullah Khan took a single. The decisive moment of the game, arguably, came next ball: Tanzim bowled another full-toss, which was adjudged a no-ball.Haider managed to squeeze the ball through point and hared back for the second but there was a mix-up with Matiullah. Had Hridoy thrown the ball with the first attempt, the run-out was very much possible as the replays showed that Haider reached the crease just in the nick of time as the throw came in late.Tanzid boosts Bangladesh startBangladesh made their best start in seven years when they got 17 runs in the first over of the match. Tanzid slammed Matiullah Khan for a big six off the fourth ball, before hammering two straight boundaries. Then, Litton cracked Dhruv Parashar for consecutive fours too, but Muhammad Jawadullah dropped a sitter off the next ball, when Litton was on ten.Jawadullah didn’t fare better with the ball shortly afterwards. UAE’s best bowler from the first game, the left-arm quick went for 15 runs in his first over. Tanzid cracked him through the covers first ball, before launching him into the stands over square-leg. Then came the dab past the lone slip. Tanzid eventually completed his fourth T20I fifty with a six off left-arm spinner Haider Ali.Tanzid however fell in the tenth over when he couldn’t hit it past Matiullah at deep square-leg. Overall, he struck three sixes and eight fours in his 33-ball 59. He helped stitch together an opening stand of 90 with Litton, as Bangladesh eventually made a towering 205 for 5. It wasn’t to be enough.

Australia A 315 for 7 (Trenaman 77, Knott 52, Faltum 52, Wong 4-57) vs England ARachel Trenaman top-scored with 77 from 131 balls, while Charli Knott and Nicole Faltum contributed a pair of half-centuries, as Australia A battled back from a difficult start to reach a competitive 315 for 7 on the opening day of their four-day unofficial Test against England A in Sydney. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Australia A slipped to 50 for 3 in the morning session, thanks in particular to the incisiveness of Issy Wong, who bowled Maddy Darke for 5 before having Anika Learoyd caught on the cut by Alice Capsey at second slip for 16. Earlier, Tahlia Wilson had been the first to fall, edging a drive to slip off Eva Grey for 11.By lunch, Australia were still awkwardly placed at 63 for 3, but Trenaman and Knott settled into their work after the break, capitalising on some loose deliveries to add 87 for the fourth wicket. However Wong, whose form and fortunes have been under scrutiny in recent seasons, returned to break the stand as Knott mistimed a pull to Paige Scholfield at midwicket for 52.Capsey then claimed the key scalp of Trenaman as she sliced a drive to Jodi Grewcock at backward point, and though Faltum kept Australia’s momentum going into the evening session, Georgia Davis picked her off, also for 52, via a drive to Grace Scrivens at mid-off.Wong then finished her day as she had started it, removing Tess Flintoff for 33 to cement her status as the pick of England’s attack with 4 for 57 in 21 overs. The four-day fixture is the final match of England A’s seven-game tour. England claimed the T20I leg 1-0 after two washouts, before Australia A hit back to win the 50-over leg 2-1.

'The World Cup is in my mind' – USMNT's Yunus Musah eyes Atalanta success to boost 2026 chances under Mauricio Pochettino

USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah hopes his recent move to Atalanta will help him secure a spot in the U.S. squad for the 2026 World Cup. The 23-year-old, who joined the Italian side on loan from AC Milan this summer, is focused on establishing himself with his new club. He played 14 minutes in a draw against Weston McKennie's Juventus on Saturday.

    World Cup aspirations

Musah recently acknowledged that delivering strong performances for Atalanta would enhance his chances of making the 2026 World Cup squad.

“So the way the World Cup is in my mind is that knowing that if I have good performances here, have a good season here, it will boost my chances to go to the national team and play in the World Cup,” Musah told . “So that’s how I think about it. If I do well here, focus on doing well here, then I’ll have a better chance to be in the team in the World Cup. So that’s how I’m thinking about it.”

Musah has made four appearances for Atalanta so far, but has largely been in a limited role for La Dea – playing just 31 minutes so far.

  • Reflecting on summer transfer uncertainty

The midfielder acknowledged it was a challenging summer due to transfer rumors while he was at Milan. Despite that, he focused on training and improving his game.

“Yeah, as you said it was a summer that was a bit of uncertainty,” Musah explained. “And yeah, I just put my head down, worked hard at Milan and got the trust of the manager and everyone, and then this great opportunity came for me to come to Atalanta. And I joined this great team and to keep playing in the Champions League, and try and get top four in the league and everything.

“So its been very nice, been settling in. I’ve been training a lot with the team and getting to know the guys. So yeah, I can’t wait for the rest of the season really.”

'To be the most complete midfielder I can be'

Musah expressed his desire to become the most complete midfielder possible. He explained that versatility is essential for adapting to different tactical setups.

“I’m just trying to develop as a all-round midfielder, to be the most complete midfielder I can be,” Musah said. “So, you’re going to need to play in different formations, etc, etc. But if you’re a complete midfielder, you’ll be able to adapt in any formation I think. So, that’s my goal, to really develop in that aspect and really learn from our coach here and in the national team.”
