Sheffield Shield round-up: Sutherland six-for, Whiteman and Hardie twin tons

A round-up from the opening day of the latest Sheffield Shield round as teams push to play NSW in the final

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Mar-2020ScorecardWill Sutherland took a career-best 6 for 67 to help Victoria skittle South Australia and continue their remarkable run towards the Sheffield Shield final.Victoria needed just 41.4 overs to take the final six wickets on the fourth day to bowl South Australia out for 216 for a 182-run win. Sutherland took three wickets on the final day to complete his best bowling in Shield cricket after taking his maiden five-wicket haul in the previous match against Queensland.Travis Head provided some resistance making a half-century after he lost night watchman Joe Mennie. But Scott Boland found a path through a gaping gate from around the wicket knocking back Head’s off stump. Boland also pinned Jake Lehmann lbw later in his spell.Harry Nielsen and Chadd Sayers put together a 49-run stand to frustrate Victoria but Sutherland returned to take two of the last three wickets. He had Nielsen caught at fine leg off a top edge for 40 before Wes Agar holed out to deep point.Victoria have won three games in a row and are now a chance to make Shield final having been dead-last and winless after six rounds prior to the BBL break.ScorecardSam Whiteman and Aaron Hardie have produced match-saving centuries for Western Australia to deny Queensland a vital outright victory at the WACA and put the Bulls Sheffield Shield final hopes in jeopardy.Whiteman made his third Shield century and his first in nearly four years to ensure Queensland at least batted again before Hardie shepherded the tail with his maiden first-class century to push WA’s lead to 128 and give Queensland just 16 overs to chase them in fading light on the final day.Queensland reshaped their batting order to have a crack at the target but lost 4 for 18 in the first six overs and slumped to 5 for 42, with Matthew Kelly taking three wickets to add to his five in the first innings, before Jimmy Peirson and Nathan McSweeney shut up shop in final six overs of the day.WA were staring down the barrel of defeat in the first hour of the final morning having lost Cameron Green, Josh Philippe, and Josh Inglis to be 6 for 162, still 57 runs shy of forcing Queensland to bat again.Whiteman and Hardie steadied with a half-century stand. Whitman reached his patient century off 242 balls. But Queensland will rue a missed opportunity. Hardie was dropped on just 19 by Joe Burns at first slip. It was a simple knee-high chance off Michael Neser with WA only 13 runs in front and two sessions still to play.Hardie made them pay striking 11 fours and a six in his 100 not out. Whiteman fell for 110 to a stunning catch from Bryce Street. But Hardie shared a 51-run stand for the 8th wicket with Kelly and then a 31-run partnership for the 10th wicket with David Moody, to go from 71 to 100 and take WA to safety. The draw sees Queensland drop to third on the Shield table behind Victoria will one round left to decide who will meet New South Wales in the final.

Wolves could sign "prolific" 22-goal star who’d be a dream next to Cunha

Wolverhampton Wanderers saw yet another Premier League game go by without securing all three points as they drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest.

The only real positive for Gary O’Neil was the return to the starting XI of Matheus Cunha, who was making his first start since February 10th, grabbing two goals in the process.

This could give the Old Gold a boost heading into the final few games, while it looks like the manager is eyeing up a potential partner for the Brazilian next season…

Wolves transfer news

Last season, the Molineux side scored the fewest goals in the Premier League, registering just 31. Although they have improved massively this term, it is clear O’Neil is aiming to add some more attacking prowess to his squad during the summer transfer window.

According to GIVEMESPORT sources, Wolves are currently keeping an eye on striker Mohamed Amoura ahead of making a potential swoop when the season comes to an end.

Mohamed Amoura in action.

They face some competition from Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, however, and if Spurs qualify for the Champions League next season, they will likely be the frontrunners for his signature.

O’Neil may have to move a few players out of the club in the transfer window in order to make a deal happen, especially considering Amoura has a contract at his current side, Union Saint-Gilloise (USG) until 2027.

Adding someone with his talent to the manager's attacking lineup could certainly give the club a major boost, while also being a dream signing for Cunha in the process, who could link up well with the Algerian.

Why Mohamed Amoura would benefit Cunha

Cunha is currently the top scorer at the club this season, netting 13 goals across all competitions. The former Atlético Madrid forward has been deployed as a number ten throughout the campaign to devastating effect and this could see him work well with Amoura.

Not only does Cunha have three assists from this position, but he also created seven big chances, and averaged one key pass per game while succeeding with two dribbles per match, showcasing his selfless nature.

Amoura has been on fire for USG throughout 2023/24, scoring a total of 22 goals across 40 matches, while also showing his selfless side by chipping in with six assists.

It is no wonder that the Algeria international was hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig for being “incredibly prolific” just before Christmas.

Among his teammates in the Belgian top flight, the 23-year-old currently ranks second for goals and assists (19), first for shots on target per game (1.4), second for big chances created (six) and fourth for successful dribbles per match (1.2), offering the same sort of qualities as Cunha.

This could allow O’Neil to form a deadly partnership which could help Wolves secure a top-half finish in the Premier League next season.

While a current price for the player is unknown, it looks as though the Old Gold will have to splash out a significant fee, but judging by his statistics this season, Amoura could be well worth it.

Arsenal ready big contract offer for striker called "better than Haaland"

Arsenal are ready to offer a target an Emirates contract worth just under £100,000-a-week, according to a new report.

Arsenal transfer rumours

The Gunners have been in fine form in recent months under Mikel Arteta, scoring goals for fun in the Premier League in 2024. A push for the title as well as being in the Champions League quarter-finals promises for a dramatic end to the campaign, but away from the pitch, sporting director Edu Gaspar has already hinted that the club have their summer targets.

"We already have our targets,” said the Brazilian (via TNT Sports).

"We have planned a lot ahead and I will be worried if we don’t score a lot of goals and if we’re not creating chances, which is the opposite because we create a lot and score a lot of goals.

“The plan is to try to get better every year and I think we are in a good moment. Let's see if we can keep improving. I think if you see the type of the players we have at the moment, it’s players which have a big, big commitment of [to] the club, which is very important. So the way we transmit to the fans, transmit to people our commitment – sometimes you can lose, you can win games, it’s all part of the sport – helps us perform the best way possible and show the passion we have for the club and try to be win as many games as we can.

“Many times in certain conversations to recruit the players you don't see the character of the player or the character of the player does not fit well with what we are trying to do and then you have to move on and try to find what we’re really looking for. If you see all the signings we’ve made since we started together, everyone is almost the same, young, energetic and passionate, and good talents with big, beautiful futures ahead of them.”

Some of the players to have been linked with moves to north London include AC Milan starlet Franceso Camarda, Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Another target is Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, and it looks as if the Gunners are ready to make their move.

Arsenal ready Joshua Zirkzee contract offer

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, relayed by TBR, Arsenal are set to offer Zirkzee an Emirates contract worth €6m-a-year (£5.2m), which works out at just under £100,000-a-week.

However, the Gunners aren’t the only side keen on the Bologna striker. AC Milan are also mentioned with an interest, whereas Bayern Munich have a €40m (£34m) buyback clause.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

Zirkzee, just 21 years of age, is into double figures for Serie A goals during the current campaign and appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €40m Transfermarkt valuation.

The Dutchman has also been compared to Erling Haaland, with Voetbal International reporter Souleyman Ozturk claiming that Zirkzee is a better version of the Manchester City star.

"Zirkzee is better than Erling Haaland at everything. Now you may be dismayed because of this statement. But I will frame it. (Zirkzee) has vision, technique, strength, charisma, flair, footballing ability. He is therefore better than Haaland in almost everything.

"Imagine if Zirkzee had the energy and focus of Haaland. Then he would be the best striker in the world."

He appears to be an exciting Emirates target, and by the looks of things, a summer move is one to watch.

James Pearce can’t believe what he’s heard on Liverpool’s penalty claim

Journalist James Pearce cannot believe what he has heard about Liverpool's late penalty claim against Manchester City, following yet more controversy in the Premier League.

Liverpool held by Man City at Anfield

The Reds drew 1-1 at home to Pep Guardiola's side on Sunday afternoon, in what proved to be one of the most pulsating games of the season to date. John Stones' opener was cancelled out by an Alexis Mac Allister penalty, and Jurgen Klopp's men probably deserved to pick up all three points given their display in their second half.

The biggest moment of the game arguably arrived in the dying seconds, however, as Jeremy Doku appeared to foul Mac Allister inside the area, kicking him in the stomach after initially getting a touch on the ball.

Alexis Mac Allister scores.

Referee Michael Oliver waved away Liverpook's protests, however, and following a VAR check, the on-field decision remained the same without sending the referee to the screen. After the game, Klopp showed his displeasure at the decision.

It is the latest incident in a big game where Liverpool can feel hard done by, having been robbed of a fair goal away to Tottenham earlier in the season, following an unfathomable VAR error when Luis Diaz scored, as well as not being awarded an apparent penalty after Arsenal's Martin Odegaard handled the ball at Anfield in December.

James Pearce stunned by Liverpool penalty claim

Taking to X, Pearce shared Shay Given's thoughts on why Liverpool weren't awarded a penalty, facepalming at the former Man City goalkeeper's explanation on Sunday evening.

Given's thoughts on the decision are baffling, as there is no qualifcation within the laws of the game regarding just how high a boot must be to be considered dangerous. Quite how Oliver and VAR couldn't decide that Mac Allister was fouled between them is staggering, considering Curtis Jones was shown a red card for winning the ball and then going through a man at Spurs, with Mac Allister himself also harshly sent-off for a much lower challenge against Bournemouth, in a decision that was overturned after an appeal.

All football fans want with VAR is consistency, and these decisions have the potential to ultimately define the Premier League title race – relegation could easily be decided by a huge mistake, too. There is an increasing feeling from many that football was better before this technology came along.

Ralf Rangnick: How Man Utd punchline turned Austria into Euro 2024 dark horses and earned Bayern Munich manager offer

The German was not widely admired for his work at Old Trafford, but he's since strengthened his reputation significantly

On May 22, 2022, Ralf Rangnick attended his final post-match press conference as interim Manchester United manager. This writer was among the journalists gathered at Selhurst Park and I can still picture the thoroughly underwhelming scene now.

United pressers are usually filled to bursting, but there were heaps of empty seats for this one. On that final day, like so many times previously in recent years, the Red Devils simply weren't the story. The biggest jeopardy they faced was potentially dropping down into the Europa Conference League for the following season. Manchester City and Liverpool's tense Premier League title race, as well as Arsenal and Tottenham's top-four battle and a relegation scrap, were playing out elsewhere.

Such was the lack of interest, there was an ominous silence when the press officer asked for the opening question following Palace's 1-0 victory, and the same staff member was soon forced to ask for quiet as some techies loudly chatted while setting up a camera to capture Eagles boss Patrick Vieira's last press conference of the campaign.

When he was eventually free to speak, Rangnick expressed himself eloquently and without a filter, as he always did during his time at Old Trafford. He addressed topics ranging from Bruno Fernandes' role in Palace's winner, the imminent exit of Edinson Cavani and what type of players United should be targeting in the summer transfer window.

And with that, he was off, firing a thank you to the media folk in attendance. At that time, Rangnick had been pencilled in for a continued consultancy role at Old Trafford following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permanent successor, a job he would juggle with his new responsibilities as Austria head coach.

However, just seven days later, his permanent exit was confirmed in a short statement posted on the club's website. "We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his efforts as interim manager over the past six months," it read.

"By mutual agreement, Ralf will now focus solely on his new role as manager of the Austria national team and will not therefore be taking up a consultancy role at Old Trafford. We would like to wish Ralf the best of luck in this next chapter of his career."

Getty ImagesShaky stint at Old Trafford

Reflecting on his time at the United helm a few years later, opinion remains split on Rangnick. To some, he is a hell-raising soothsayer who correctly identified the club's problems and wasn't afraid to let those above him know about their shortcomings. To others, he was a disastrous appointment, whose tactical incompetence led to United's season crashing and burning when it could have been salvaged. The truth of the matter likely lies somewhere in the middle.

Throughout his time at the club, Rangnick often publicly highlighted problems that INEOS appear to be addressing in the opening stages of their part-ownership. In his very first press conference, he criticised the churn of managers since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement and emphasised the need to create a "United DNA".

Then, towards the end of the his tenure, perhaps after seeing the true scale of the issues, he continually reiterated this message, most famously recommending the club underwent "open-heart" surgery in April 2022.

"You don’t even need glasses to see and analyse where the problems are," he said. "Now it’s about how do we solve them? It’s not enough to do some minor amendments – cosmetic things. In medicine you would say that this is an operation of the open heart. If this happens and everyone has realised that this has to happen and if people want to work together then it makes sense, and I believe it doesn’t take two or three years to change those things."

This warning are eerily similar to Sir Jim Ratcliffe's comments in February of this year. "It's a two-to-three-season challenge to get the organisation and environment right, to get the performances on the field right and win football matches," he said. "That involves the design and structure of the organisation being correct. In the last 11 years, Manchester United have had a lot of coaches and nobody has been very successful in that environment. That says to me there is something wrong with the environment."

INEOS have backed up these proclamations too, rapidly altering the club with the additions of Omar Berrada as chief executive, Jason Wilcox as technical director and – hopefully soon – Dan Ashworth as sporting director.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesEasy job?

All of this suggests that Rangnick seemed to succeed in his brief as a kind of footballing trouble-shooter. But his detractors might point out that this was hardly worth his sizeable salary. If the club wanted someone to point at them and shout: 'Manchester United aren't very good, they need to be more like Man City and Liverpool,' they simply could have turned on the television or had a brief scroll on social media.

Rangnick's other role was to have a positive influence on the pitch. Solskjaer was sacked following a 4-1 defeat to Watford, a result that left United eighth, six points off the top four, out of the Carabao Cup following a September defeat to West Ham, but well on track to progress to the Champions League group stages.

By the time he'd finished the job, they'd crashed out of Europe in the last 16 to a poor Atletico Madrid side, exited the FA Cup against second-tier Middlesbrough and moved up just two places in the table – though only by the skin of their teeth.

Perhaps most disappointingly, Rangnick – who arrived with a lofty reputation for high-octane, pressing football – made very little progress implementing that DNA he continually mentioned. Flirting between several different approaches, United were far from cohesive, often being bailed out by the individual brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo – who would later describe his boss as "not even a coach".

So while Rangnick's candid interviews were refreshing for supporters, he failed to convince as a coach at the top level during his stint in the Premier League. Not that that stopped Austria supporters getting excited when he was unveiled. And, maybe surprisingly, this hype has proved justified.

Getty ImagesTurning things around

When Rangnick took over, public feeling towards the Austria national team was at its lowest ebb for some time. They had just failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, attendances were down and the football being played under Franco Foda was largely unadventurous.

Perhaps conscious of this fact, Rangnick made efforts to get the public on side, moving out to Austria and speaking affably at his first press conference. However, the biggest factor in the shifting mood around the men's team has been the changes made on the pitch.

After enduring a shaky start in a tough Nations League group, Rangnick's methods began to make an impact in November 2022. During that international break, Austria secured an encouraging win over Italy, which provided a platform for their mightily impressive Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. They would breeze through Group G, finishing just one point behind winners Belgium – who were the only side they lost to during the entire process.

And after qualification was sewn up, they kicked into another gear, winning three of their four subsequent friendlies, including victories over Germany, Turkey and Serbia.

Getty ImagesOverhauling the tactics

Perhaps what has been even more eye-catching than the results themselves has been Rangnick's overhaul of Austria's playing style. Credited as a pioneer of gegen-pressing, this high-octane approach has been present right from the start of his reign. Usually playing a 4-2-3-1, Rangnick also insists on vertical passes and rapid transitions – and it's pretty clear that his squad has bought in.

Speaking after just his second game in charge, a noteworthy draw with France, skipper David Alaba said: "It just shows that maybe we’re fed up with playing a certain kind of football, like we’ve always had in previous years."

That Rangnick has managed to implement his style – which requires players to take on complex instructions and run themselves into the ground – despite having scarce contact time with his squad, is worthy of significant praise.

In 2024, there is also a political element to any national team job, and Rangnick has handled himself excellently in this arena. In March, he omitted three players from his squad after they were seen engaging in homophobic chanting following Rapid Vienna's win over city rivals Austria Vienna the previous month.

Amid the rise of the far right in Austria and Germany over the past few years, Rangnick has said: "If the history of both countries has taught us anything, it is the danger posed by right-wing extremism and fascism."

Rangnick has also insisted that the national team has a role to play in standing against these malignant forces. "We cannot allow things to continue like this. I do not want our grandchildren to suffer. We as a national team must also stand up for the right values."

Messi could have been forgiven for feeling a little anxious ahead of a crucial clash – having previously endured final heartache in 2014.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The all-time great has, however, learned to take everything in his stride – with there little that he has not experienced over the course of a record-breaking career. Rather than allow the sense of occasion to get to him, Messi enjoyed a relaxed evening with his team-mates before speaking with his family and getting a good night’s sleep.

  • WHAT MESSI SAID

Messi told of readying himself for a match that allowed a remarkable medal collection to be completed: “Just like every night. We always got together with the boys to talk, drink mate, play cards and that night was the same as always. Before going to sleep I spoke with Antonela, as we did every night, and went to sleep. We were very calm. Although we knew that we were going to play against a very tough opponent because of the players they had and because they had also had a spectacular World Cup. We had been very calm and confident. At that moment the group had passed many tests and was more than prepared to play in that final.”

As captain, Messi had to deliver a pre-match team talk. He did not, however, replicate his emotional speech from the 2021 Copa America final. He added on narrowing the focus of those around him: "The Copa America was a special moment because of how we arrived, because of everything we had experienced during those 40 days. A special moment in the world due to the pandemic. We had to be alone, isolated, go play on empty fields because we were playing without an audience. At the World Cup it was a talk like we always do, more thinking about the game and what could happen than emotionally or motivationally. It was something more about the game.”

West Brom could ease Maja blow by signing £4m gem with 47 Championship goals

Carlos Corberan is getting the most out his threadbare West Bromwich Albion squad to date, arguably helping the Baggies punch above their weight in fifth spot in the Championship so far with an extensive injury list continuing to curse the second tier side.

Josh Maja's recent serious ankle ligament injury had those at the Hawthorns understandably panicking, leaving Brandon Thomas-Asante as the only readily available out-and-out striker with Daryl Dike also still on the mend.

With Maja ruled out for four months, this month will see Corberan target a new striker to add to his injury-ravaged group to give Thomas-Asante some much-needed competition.

The Baggies boss could well have found the striker he wants if transfer reports are correct coming out of the West Midlands, a proven Championship goalscorer one potential incoming through the door at the Hawthorns this January.

West Brom transfer latest – Kieffer Moore

The Sun reported earlier this week on the possibility of AFC Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore leaving the Vitality Stadium this month, with a whole host of Championship clubs scrambling to win his services if he was given the green light to depart.

West Brom were just one name among many included with the likes of Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough all also touted to be in for the towering attacker, with Alex Crook of talkSPORT further speculating that Moore's ex-club Cardiff City would test the waters over a possible reunion too.

The Baggies will hope the allure of coming in and being a key part of the West Brom squad can tempt Moore to swap the south coast for the West Midlands this January, easing the pressure on Thomas-Asante's shoulders tremendously and allowing Corberan not to worry about another injury being critical.

The stats that show why Kieffer Moore would be a good signing for West Brom

Scoring 47 goals in the Championship over his nomadic career so far – which has seen the 6 foot 5 attacker even play in far-off Norway – Moore would be an asset for any second-tier side this January near the top-end of the division.

25 of those came in a fruitful spell in Wales for the Bluebirds, before the Cherries came calling to win his services.

In contrast, Maja – who has experienced success by playing Ligue 1 football in his fledging career to date – has only amassed three Championship goals with fixed first-team forward Thomas-Asante only boasting 40 EFL goals in total across his back catalogue.

West Brom will hope Moore can pick up from where he left off and return to his potent best in the second tier if signed, with the likes of Jed Wallace and Grady Diangana licking their lips at the potential of the Welshman joining.

Wallace in particular will utilise Moore's height well with countless whipped crosses into the area directed at the imposing attacker to connect with, potentially adding more assists next to his name with his season tally currently at three.

Likewise, Diangana will know that a typical mazy run forward could well be converted by Moore sticking a leg out or firing home emphatically – the Congolese winger wanting to enhance his assist output with the prolific forward joining the club.

Once described as a "focal point" by Welsh centre-back Ashley Williams when talking about the lofty striker's importance for his nation in an article for BBC Sports, Corberan could base his entire Baggies team around Moore finishing off opportunities as a lone dangerman.

With Thomas-Asante still relatively inexperienced when it comes to Championship football, and Maja due to be out for an extended period of time, signing Moore should be a priority for West Brom this month to improve their odds of winning promotion to the Premier League.

Insider hints West Ham could seal double-signing if Benrahma and Fornals go

West Ham United insider ExWHUemployee has shared an update on the club's transfer plans, naming the two players they could sign if both Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma leave.

West Ham's busiest week in January

David Moyes' side officially announced the signing of midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a loan deal from Man City today, with the England international set to help their charge for a European qualification place.

There has been a reply.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 26, 2024

Phillips, who will wear the number 11 shirt, expressed his delight at joining West Ham when the club confirmed his arrival.

“I’m really pleased to be here,” said the Yorkshireman to their official website (whufc.co.uk).

“There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now. There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the Club and I can’t wait to be part of it.

“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season."

The 28-year-old could barely get a look-in at Eastlands, instead finding himself playing second fiddle behind one of the world's best defensive midfielders in Rodri.

Now, Phillips comes in to partner Edson Alvarez, and could prove to be an excellent alternative to the former when he is unavailable.

Following the ex-Leeds star, widespread reports indicate they have their eyes on two more players – Ibrahim Osman of FC Norsjaelland and Al-Ittihad winger Jota.

They're in talks to sign Osman and the deal has progressed quickly since earlier this week, according to Fabrizio Romano, while talkSPORT have also claimed that West Ham contact has been made with Jota.

ExWHUemployee shares Osman and Jota update

Now, club insider Ex has shared an update on the club's pursuit of both men. He says that West Ham doing a double deal for Jota and Osman is possible before February 1, but on the condition they manage to offload both Benrahma and Fornals.

“It appears that Betis are leading the way with the fact that our former manager Manuel Pellegrini is their manager and he was in fact the man that originally bought Fornals to East London," said Ex on the future of Fornals to West Ham Way.

“The Spanish side hope to complete this signing this window. This could free up further funds and if Benrahma can be sold it raises the chances of us signing both Osman and Jota the two original targets."

“The main problem for the deal could be however the financial situations of both Spanish teams who apparently do not have much of a budget and would prefer a loan deal.”
