Late Boje blast earns Northants tie

02-Jul-2010
ScorecardFormer South Africa international Herschelle Gibbs’ first century in Twenty20 cricket was not enough to earn Yorkshire a win as Nicky Boje somehow snatched Northamptonshire a tie at Wantage Road.Gibbs hammered a magnificent 101 not out off 53 balls with his explosive knock including five sixes and eight fours, as Yorkshire made an imposing 180 for 3 off their 20 overs. Improbably, with Northamptonshire needing 13 off the final ball, Richard Pyrah’s no ball was clouted for six by Boje over long leg with Gibbs’ former South Africa team-mate smashing the following delivery through midwicket for four to claim a share of the spoils.Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat first, but they got off to a bad start when, in the third over, Adam Lyth launched Chaminda Vaas to Alex Wakely at extra cover. Captain Jacques Rudolph made 14 before chipping Boje to Northamptonshire skipper Andrew Hall at extra cover. But Gibbs made it to 50 off just 28 balls as he continued to punish the Steelbacks attack. He and Anthony McGrath added 58 runs together for the third wicket before the latter, who made 16, hammered Lee Daggett to David Willey at long-onAfter his dismissal, the visitors really cut loose with Gibbs and Jonathan Bairstow blasting 73 runs between them in the last five overs. Bairstow smashed two sixes in consecutive balls off Vaas in the penultimate over on his way to an unbeaten 32 off 14 balls, with Gibbs claiming his century in the final over from 53 balls.Chasing 181, Northamptonshire openers David Sales and Vaas raced to 50 off just 27 balls as they took the game to the Yorkshire attack. Former West Indies paceman Tino Best finally made the breakthrough when he forced Sales, who was just one short of a deserved half-century, to edge to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy. The in-form Vaas did make his 50, off 38 balls including two sixes, before smashing Adil Rashid to Azeem Rafiq at mid-wicket. Elton Chigumbura made 11 before launching Pyrah to Rashid at deep midwicket as the wheels began to fall off the Steelbacks chase. Two wickets by McGrath in the penultimate over threatened to seal Northamptonshire’s fate as O’Brien was caught by Lyth at long-off before Hall smashed him to Pyrah at deep midwicket. But Boje struck a six and a four off the last two deliveries to claim an unlikely tie.

Celtic: Jones drops worrying Semenyo claim

Dean Jones has dropped a worrying claim on reported Celtic transfer target Antoine Semenyo.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider stated his belief that, despite it being reported that Celtic have sent scouts to watch the Bristol City centre-forward in action ahead of a potential swoop for the 22-year-old this summer, Ange Postecoglou’s side will not be able to afford a move for the striker – with the Robins believed to be demanding a figure of £20m for Semenyo’s services.

When asked about Celtic’s interest in the Englishman, Jones replied: “I don’t know if they could afford him.”

Fans will be gutted

While it is true that Celtic do not exactly lack in central attacking options, with Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Giorgos Giakoumakis all comfortable operating in the centre-forward role, considering the sheer amount of potential Semenyo quite clearly possesses, the news that the Bhoys may be priced out of a move for the 22-year-old this summer is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful gutted.

Indeed, despite Bristol City’s struggles so far this season – with the Robins currently sitting 16th in the Championship standings – the £3.5k-per-week forward has nevertheless been in devastating form over his 19 league appearances, having already scored six goals, registered eight assists and created four big chances for his teammates.

These returns have seen the £1.08m-rated hitman average a quite extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.02, ranking him as his club’s third-best performer in the second tier of English football.

However, while Semenyo’s ability in the final third is without question, whether or not Nigel Pearson’s side will be successful in demanding such an astronomical figure as £20m for the transfer of the 22-year-old very much remains to be seen.

Either way, considering Celtic’s recent business model of signing undervalued players, before developing them and subsequently selling them on for big profits, the Robins hitman does not exactly fit this bill – especially not for tens of millions of pounds.

Leeds target Fofana hints at Lens exit

Leeds United transfer target Seko Fofana has refused to rule out the idea of leaving Lens this summer, giving the Whites fresh hope of sealing a move for him.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with Fofana move

The Whites may have had a quiet January transfer window but incomings are expected in the summer, with reinforcements needed particularly in midfield, where Brenden Aaronson is said to be a target again after the failed bids last month.

Another player Leeds have been linked with recently is Fofana, who is enjoying a good season with Lens, scoring seven goals in 24 Ligue 1 appearances.

Other Premier League clubs, namely Burnley and Newcastle, are also keen, and they have all been boosted after new comments from the French-born Ivory Coast international emerged.

The Latest: Midfield hints at exit

Speaking to Foot Mercato [via Sport Witness], Fofana claimed that ‘nothing is impossible’ regarding a potential Lens exit at the end of the season, with Leeds name-checked with ‘real interest’ in the report:

“To be honest, nothing is impossible. Today, I can very well say yes (stay at Lens) and tomorrow it will be no.

“There are a lot of parameters and we don’t control everything. I am very happy to be here. We try to go as far as possible and I remain focused on this end of the season. I hope we will go as far as possible.”

The Verdict: Strong summer addition

Midfield is an area that clearly needs strengthening this summer, with Kalvin Phillips relied upon far too much and Adam Forshaw suffering huge injury problems over the last few years.

Fofana looks an ideal man to come in and add quality in the middle of the park, with his aforementioned scoring record coupled with a hugely impressive 90.7% pass completion rate in the league this season.

Not only that but he has also averaged 0.7 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per match, which although not earth-shattering numbers, show he is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades who can chip in defensively when needed.

He produced a ‘masterclass’ performance against French giants PSG back in December, with journalist Zach Lowy saying he is a ‘phenom’ who ‘absolutely dominated’ Marco Verratti, Danilo Pereira and Leandro Paredes.

Lancashire limp on rain-hit day

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, making his Lancashire debut against his former county, survived a mini collapse today as the visitors reached 136 for 5 before rain ended play at 3pm

ScorecardShivnarine Chanderpaul, making his Lancashire debut against his former county, survived a mini collapse today as the visitors reached 136 for 5 before rain ended play at 3pm. The West Indian ended the day on 30 not out after lobbing the final ball just over mid-off when shaping to pull Callum Thorp. After being granted a flying start by the erratic Liam Plunkett, Lancashire slipped from 52 without loss to 59 for 3 after being put in as the change bowlers capitalised on favourable conditions. The ball swung under the overcast skies and there was also life in the pitch, as Mitch Claydon proved when finding the edge of both openers’ bats as they pushed forward.Stephen Moore was first to go, caught behind for 27, and Paul Horton followed for 29 when he edged at shoulder height to Michael Di Venuto at second slip. It was just as well for Durham that Thorp was at his most miserly to counter the profligacy of Plunkett. Thorp had figures of two for 14 from 14.2 overs while Plunkett conceded 45 runs off seven overs. When he last bowled, Plunkett had performed well for England Lions and Durham skipper Phil Mustard gambled by asking him to bowl the first over. With Steve Harmison at the other end, Plunkett conceded all the 11 runs which came off the first four overs and then saw the first ball of the fifth hooked over long leg for six by Moore. The ex-Worcestershire man cut the next ball for four, forcing Mustard to bring on Thorp. His away swing accounted for Mark Chilton, who edged to Dale Benkenstein at third slip, then Paul Collingwood struck with his 10th ball in his first championship appearance for two years. He nipped one back to have Steven Croft lbw for four before Tom Smith put on 36 with Chanderpaul, who survived a sharp chance off Collingwood on 10, when an edge flew low to Di Venuto’s right at second slip.Thorp had the one post-lunch success when extra bounce saw Smith caught behind for 23 when playing defensively on the back foot. Luke Sutton contributed 14 to an unbroken stand of 26 with Chanderpaul.

Nilesh Kulkarni, the left-arm spinner who played three Tests and ten ODIs for India, has announced his retirement from first-class cricket. “I have a small announcement to make that I am retiring from international and first-class cricket,” Kulkarni said at the launch of Indian Institute of Sports Management, in Mumbai.Kulkarni, 37, has been a stalwart for Mumbai since 1994-95. He took 308 first-class wickets for his team and 95 wickets in List A games. Kulkarni made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1997-98 and he hit the record books immediately by claiming a wicket off his first ball in Tests, that of Marvan Atapattu. He is the only Indian bowler to achieve this feat and the 12th bowler in the history of the game. He sent down 70 overs but amazingly enough that was the only Test wicket he took for he had the misfortune to bowl when the Sri Lankan batsmen set several records in running up the highest total in Tests. He played in one more Test at home against Sri Lanka but had to wait till 2001 for a Test return. He took one more wicket in the Chennai Test against Australia, which turned out to be his last. He claimed 11 wickets in ten ODIs with a best of 3 for 27.He ends his first-class career with 357 wickets and List A with 135 strikes.

West Ham may sign Niakhate to replace Diop

West Ham didn’t add any new signings to their side in January but David Moyes will surely be hoping to make up for it this summer as the Hammers push on again for a place in European football as news of a potential transfer target emerges.

What’s the word?

According to The Telegraph, West Ham are plotting a bid for Mainz captain Moussa Niakhate and could snap up the centre-back for just £8m in the summer.

Mainz reportedly do not want to lose the 26-year-old on a free transfer when his contract expires in 2023, so would be interested in accepting a lower fee this summer to cash in on him.

The East London club joins two other Premier League clubs in the pursuit for the Frenchman’s signature, as Newcastle United and Everton are also linked in the report.

Diop replacement

West Ham supporters will surely be delighted that the club is linked with a new player to freshen up the defensive line after an abject season from Issa Diop, and they will be even more thrilled about replacing their current defender with Niakhate when you compare their output this season.

According to Squawka, the 26-year-old defender, who was hailed “ambitious” by Mainz manager Bo Svensson, has also been highly effective in offensive play with three more goals and ten more chances created than the current West Ham centre-back who was labelled “poor” by Ian Wright this season.

It’s also evident that he is well-oiled machine in defence, registering numbers that eclipse far and away what Diop can produce.

With the Europa League trophy and an outside chance of stealing the fourth spot in the Premier League table to qualify for Champions League still in sight, it was thought Moyes might have added some depth to his squad in the winter transfer window, but clearly the club felt that they could progress without new additions.

The recent success for West Ham in finishing higher in the league, and their continued efforts to become a force in the Europa League will surely mean that adding to and upgrading on their current options will be a priority this summer, and Niakhate could be a great place to start for the side.
