Cricinfo staff21-May-2010Kieron Pollard, the West Indies batsman, has been fined 25% of his match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during his team’s one-run defeat at the hands of South Africa in Antigua. Pollard was charged with a Level 1 offence under article 2.1.8 of the code which relates to conduct contrary to the spirit of cricket.The incident took place in the 18th over of West Indies’ innings when Pollard ran towards the non-striker’s end in such a way that he impeded the bowler’s – Dale Steyn – path to the ball. Pollard pleaded guilty to the charge.”A competitive attitude is to be promoted and cherished on the cricket field but players must also remember at all times to play within the spirit of the game,” Roshan Mahanama, the match referee, said. “On this occasion Kieron has overstepped the mark and I have fined him 25 per cent of his match fee, a penalty that he has accepted.”

Rangers’ hopes of signing James McAtee in January were stymied by his current club, according to Heart & Hand. 

The lowdown

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has made three senior appearances for Manchester City, with The Athletic correspondent Sam Lee reporting on transfer deadline day that the teenager had rejected a loan proposal from Rangers, as well as clubs in the English Football League, Spain, Netherlands and Belgium.

The Gers were able to recruit another Premier League youngster on a temporary basis last month, with winger Amad Diallo joining from City’s local rivals Manchester United until the end of the season.

However, official Rangers media partner Heart & Hand took to Twitter to challenge The Athletic’s report, claiming that McAtee’s chances of moving to Ibrox were hindered by his club rather than the player.

Their tweet read: “James McAtee didn’t reject a loan move to Rangers. Rangers are in a long line of admirers for the player unfortunately headed by Pep Guardiola who has told him he is staying at Manchester City!”

The verdict

McAtee looks a real gem. His record at under-23 level for Man City is outstanding – 44 games, 23 goals, 16 assists. It’s little wonder that Guardiola has previously described him as an “exceptional” young talent.

He seems to be too good to be playing youth football at this stage, so from that point of view it’s perhaps slightly surprising that City aren’t willing to loan him out to get him some more senior experience.

The reigning Premier League champions are said to be ‘confident’ that McAtee will sign a new contract in the coming weeks, with his current Etihad Stadium deal set to expire in less than 18 months.

If an agreement can’t be reached for whatever reason, perhaps Rangers will be one of the clubs who might look to pounce at that stage.

Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf is aiming to return to the international fray during the tour of UAE in October and November, where Pakistan will face South Africa for two Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20. Yousuf has kept a low profile since his sudden retirement from international cricket in March, but he’s now taking his first steps back in to some form of cricketing action by appearing in the Lahore Premier League, a local club tournament.”I plan to play domestic cricket this season but right now international cricket is not on my mind. If I do plan to return I will target the Test and one-day series against South Africa later this year in the UAE,” Yousuf told .Yousuf was the captain during Pakistan’s win-less tour of Australia, where the team came under fire for their performances. The PCB responded by penalising seven players it believed were responsible for the defeats, Yousuf among them. He and Younis Khan were banned indefinitely, and as a mark of protest, Yousuf announced he was quitting the game “for now”, hinting at a possible return later on. He was the only one among the seven players not to appeal against the punishment, despite the PCB leaving the door open for him to return. However, Yousuf hadn’t responded to those messages from the board so the national selectors could not consider him for the tour of England.Though the domestic season won’t start for a few more months, Yousuf is looking forward to the club tournament to get back in to the groove.”Cricket is in my blood and I still enjoy playing the sport. What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Bristol World, who claim that the senior Celtic scout, Craig Strachan, was in attendance for Bristol City’s 2-1 win over Reading on Wednesday evening, with the 22-year-old centre-forward believed to be the focus of the talent-spotter’s gaze.

The report goes on to state that the Championship side are hoping to tie the striker down to a new deal at Ashton Gate, however, it is also claimed that the Robins would be willing to part with Semenyo this summer – should they receive an offer totalling somewhere around £20m for his services.

Considering just how impressive Semenyo has been for Bristol City so far this season, it is easy to see why Ange Postecoglou would be interested in a move for the 22-year-old this summer.

Indeed, over his 17 Championship appearances in the current campaign, the £1.08m-rated hitman has been in breathtaking form for the Robins, having already bagged five goals, registered six assists and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £3.5k-per-week forward who Phil Parkinson dubbed a “dangerous” player average a SofaScore match rating of 6.99, ranking him as Nigel Pearson’s fourth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

Furthermore, with Semenyo also being comfortable operating on the right-wing, the 22-year-old could very easily slot into Postecoglou’s front three, or even play in a front two alongside one of Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda or Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Either way, the signing of the Bristol City goal-machine would appear to be an extremely exciting one for the Bhoys, however, with a figure in the region of £20m being mooted for his services, whether or not Celtic will be looking to splash this sort of cash on a single target this summer is another matter entirely.
