Harmison extends Durham stint to 2013

England fast bowler Steve Harmison has signed a four-year deal with Durham, which will keep him at Chester-le-Street till 2013

England fast bowler Steve Harmison has signed a four-year deal with Durham that will keep him at Chester-le-Street till 2013. Harmison, 31, may be having a torrid time internationally, yo-yoed in and out of the England squad, but he had an impressive 2009 with the Division One side, picking up fifty Championship wickets to take his career tally to over 400 first-class wickets.”I have always loved playing cricket for Durham and I’m incredibly proud to represent the club and be part of the setup here,” Harmison said. “I’m looking forward to the next four seasons, especially 2010 as we look to win the Championship for a record third year.”Harmison, however, insisted that his England career wasn’t over. He played two Tests in the Ashes, took five wickets but was omitted for the tour of South Africa. Commenting on his omission, he understood the national selectors’ plans of building a team for the future.”I will go out like I did this year and the year before that to try and take wickets for Durham,” Harmison was quoted in the . “If that sees my name put in the hat to play for England again and I can be of service, I will be happy to do that.”But the way it has been explained to me is that England are trying to move on to the next level for their next big series in Australia in 2010. They don’t see me being a part of that and I think I would struggle because of all the international cricket between the last Test I played at the Oval and that first Ashes Test in Brisbane next year.”England have made their decision to build for the future, which is fine by me. They are going through an exciting time, they are going with a group of young fast bowlers to South Africa which will be helpful for them. I hope they do well. If I knew it wasn’t possible for me to go to Australia in 2010, then I would come out and retire [from international cricket] for the sake of everybody.”Harmison, in fact, claimed the wicket that clinched the County Championship in both of Durham’s title wins in 2008 and 2009, and was named the county’s Bowler of the Year for the second year running. Despite the achievements, Harmison failed to make England’s squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.Durham head coach Geoff Cook, however, was delighted that Harmison had committed his future. “Stephen is a huge asset to our team, he has a great presence, both on the field and in the dressing room, and his commitment and dedication to the Club has always been fantastic,” Cook said. The sentiment was similar from David Harker, Durham’s chief executive. “Stephen is a great performer for Durham and we are absolutely delighted that he will remain a major partof the team for the foreseeable future. Off the field we have a number of young players benefiting from his experience and guidance and that contribution cannot be underestimated.”

West Ham United linked with Jason Knight

West Ham United are reportedly contemplating making a move for Derby County midfielder Jason Knight in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to club insider ExWHUemployee (as relayed by West Ham News & Views), the Hammers could be set to capitalise on Derby’s financial turmoil by making an offer for the highly-rated 20-year-old this winter.

They tweeted: “West Ham could look to capitalise on Derby County’s financial situation in the January transfer window. One player we like is 20-year-old Irish midfielder Jason Knight. We looked at him last January and could look at him again this January. [@ExWHUemployee].”

The next Declan Rice?

The Pride Park academy graduate has established himself as one of the Championship’s most promising prospects in recent years after scoring 11 goals and providing three assists in 94 appearances for the Rams.

Earlier this year, Derby boss Wayne Rooney dubbed the youngster a “manager’s dream” who “gives everything”, highlighting his work ethic and dedication to make it to the top of his game. Coincidentally, those are two attributes that epitomise the current Hammers talisman; Declan Rice.

His hard work is clearly being rewarded by the Manchester United legend, as Knight has started 11 of his 14 league appearances this term, helping him earn eight caps for the Republic of Ireland along the way.

However, due to the Midlands outfit’s off-field troubles, they could have no choice but to offload their young star in order to balance the books.

That’s according to Football League World, who claimed that Derby are at risk of losing several of their academy prospects in the near future as their struggles to find a new owner continue.

It’s thought that the club’s administrators have failed to rule out the prospect of selling players in January, and Knight is a prime candidate to depart Pride Park.

With Mark Noble set to retire at the end of the season and summer signing Alex Kral yet to make a serious impression in the first team, Moyes may be tempted to move for Knight over the coming months and his arrival would surely get the club’s supporters buzzing.

And that’s because the youngster already appears to be outperforming West Ham’s club captain in the current campaign.

As per WhoScored, Knight has averaged 0.7 key passes, 0.7 shots per game, 0.9 tackles and 1.6 aerial duels won in his league outings, bettering Noble’s tallies in each metric. With a suitable all-round game, he’d surely be the perfect midfielder for Moyes, mirroring what somebody like Rice brings to the team.

For context, he has managed 0.7 shots per match of his own and 0.9 key passes which are near identical tallies to Knight. Furthermore, the England international has won 1.3 aerial battles an outing, just 0.3 fewer than West Ham’s latest transfer target.

Therefore, Moyes could secure an upgrade in midfield on Kral and Noble, all while potentially discovering his next Rice in the process. That’s certainly something for the fanbase to get excited about.

Twenty20 suits my style as I have scored good amount of runs in the ICL as well,” Gavaskar said at the end of the day’s practice session. “The association with someone so successful like Dav Whatmore should benefit me.

Rodada perfeita?!

Gold reveals Spurs blow before Leicester

Tottenham Hotspur may still be without Sergio Reguilon on Thursday as Antonio Conte’s depleted side head to the Midlands to face Leicester City…

What’s the latest?

That’s according to the ever-reliable football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, who delivered a fresh update on the Spaniard’s situation ahead of the game, having been absent since his withdrawal just 22 minutes into the win over Norwich City ten days ago.

The 24-year-old posted on social media after the match that it wasn’t anything to worry about and that he would be back soon, though that does not appear to be the case now.

“I am told that Sergio Reguilon is not fully training yet after that one (his injury against Norwich), he is on his way back but I just wonder if Thursday might come too soon,” Gold claimed on his YouTube channel.

Big blow

The young left-back has been a vital player for Spurs this season, particularly under the Italian as his wing-back system has allowed him to thrive in both attack and defence.

He had started 13 games in the Premier League prior to injury, with WhoScored ranking him as Conte’s fifth-best player so far. Defensively, he has chipped in with a squad-high 1.9 interceptions and 1.5 tackles, whilst in the final third, he leads the way for assists (three) and has also averaged one key pass per game.

Reguilon’s importance to the 52-year-old head coach is reflected by comments from the player himself just last month. He told the Evening Standard:

“I’ve never played five at the back before. I have to learn quickly. The gaffer has told me he wants me to be solid in defence but at the same moment I have to arrive in the box, help the strikers, score goals, give assists. Now I have more of a chance to score goals and give assists. So let’s work.”

Now, if he is unavailable on Thursday, it remains to be seen exactly who could replace him in the starting XI because Conte has not had his full squad available due to a virus outbreak at the club’s training ground.

That has put pay to two fixtures thus far and no players have been named. If everyone is available, then he is likely to turn to Ryan Sessegnon, who was sent off in his first start under Conte, as Ben Davies is a left-sided centre-back in this system.

On the above evidence, not having the £22.5m-rated dynamo back involved is certainly a gutting blow to Spurs and one that should leave the manager concerned.

AND in other news, Conte could sign an even better Moses at Spurs with “unplayable” £27m-rated “machine”…

Ange drops Celtic injury news before St Johnstone

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has delivered a worrying update on his Hoops side’s injury situation following the disappointing 0-0 draw to St Mirren on Wednesday night.

What’s the story?

The likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Joe Hart were left out of the side in midweek, and speaking in his post-match press conference, Postecoglou was quick to insist that anyone who did miss out, was because they were either injured or suspended.

He said: “All of them were unavailable, none of them were rested. I don’t know where that came out. I don’t rest players, if they want a rest they can have a rest when they’re 45. Everyone who wasn’t playing tonight was unavailable. Either suspended or injured so that’s the case.”

Then, when asked whether any of them would potentially be back for the Boxing Day clash against St Johnstone, he added: “Not sure. We’ll see, it’s unlikely that anyone will definitely come back into it. There’s a couple who might be close but we’ll see over the next couple of days how they recover.”

Fans surely worried

With Hart and Furuhasi out, and the likes of David Turnbull, Jota, Giorgos Giakoumakis and James Forrest also missing, the Hoops find themselves in a bit of a tricky situation heading into the game against St Johnstone on Sunday.

That match will be the Hoops’ final game in the Scottish Premiership before the winter break, and with the title still very much up for grabs, a slip-up now could prove to be season-defining.

The draw against strugglers St Mirren was a misstep in itself, and anything but a win against bottom side St Johnstone at the weekend would be frankly unforgivable. After all, they are now six points behind their Old Firm rivals and are at risk of a bit of a collapse heading into the New Year period.

Celtic’s injury problems have begun to stack up right at the moment they could have done without it, and fans will surely be worried about the prospect of seeing their depleted team drop some more valuable points this Sunday.

Meanwhile, this Celtic man let Ange down vs St Mirren…
