The Lowdown: Hoops struggles

The Greece international hasn’t exactly had the start to life in Scotland he would’ve wanted after joining the Hoops on transfer deadline day over the summer.

The 26-year-old, labelled as ‘special’ by Dutch reporter Rik Elfrink after a four-goal performance in one match last season, has started just two games in green and white, scoring once.

He has been in and out of the squad following his arrival due to fitness and injury issues, with his latest knock coming last week.

The Latest: Out of Leverkusen clash

Ange Postecoglou confirmed to the media that the Hoops look set to be without Tom Rogic and Carl Starfelt, while Giakoumakis also won’t make it for this evening’s match in Germany.

Hendry relayed Postecoglou’s comments on Twitter, claiming that the striker requires ‘further investigation’ on his knee injury.

The Verdict: Not good…

Postecoglou shared news of Giakoumakis’ latest injury prior to the Scottish League Cup semi-final win over St Johnstone last week, claiming that he would be out for at least seven days.

However, it now seems as if that will be a lot longer, with the Hoops needing to look into the issue further and no timeframe on a return.

Hopefully it isn’t serious and Giakoumakis can be back playing next month; but if it is, questions may well be asked regarding the £2.5m summer signing and his inability to remain fit.

– Estou indignado, isso não pode acontecer. Futebol é alegria. Por mais que o resultado não tenha vindo, não pode fazer isso com um jogador nosso – disparou Léo Artur, em entrevista à Rádio Bandeirantes de Campinas.

Quem também reclamou muito foi o técnico Eduardo Baptista, que, no domingo, comandou a equipe pela primeira vez desde que saiu do clube, em 2016.

– Minha vontade é de ir embora e não voltar mais – afirmou o treinador.

Após a confusão, o Gorilão, que é o ônibus da Ponte Preta, foi direto para o 4º Distrito Policial de Campinas, no Taquaral, para registrar um boletim de ocorrência contra os torcedores que participaram das agressões. Em nota, o clube paulista repudiou o acontecido:

“A Ponte Preta confirma que, neste momento (18h48), o ônibus que transporta atletas, comissão técnica e dirigentes acaba de chegar ao quarto DP onde será realizado Boletim de Ocorrência contra os indivíduos que agrediram física e verbalmente jogadores, comissão técnica e seguranças no aeroporto de Viracopos. Além do BO por agressão, também será registrada formalmente a denúncia por ameaça não só aos presentes como aos familiares deles, e por vandalismo contra o ônibus, que teve danos como vidros quebrados.”

Manchester United are set to appoint Ralf Rangnick as their new interim manager after dismissing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the weekend.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the innovative tactician is expected to take charge of the Red Devils on a six-month deal until the end of May before moving into a consultancy role for the next two years.

The news will be warmly welcomed by everyone associated with United, given his reputation and previous exploits, but the 63-year-old will also likely demand many changes.

Rangnick is commonly believed to be the founding father of modern-day tactics in his homeland, with his Gegenpressing style influencing the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann.

Such a physically demanding style requires a certain type of player, and therefore, it’s probable that considerable investments will be made in the upcoming January transfer window.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects Rangnick to lineup following a whopping £196.5 million spending spree…

Despite David de Gea’s return to form in the opening weeks of the current campaign, Rangnick’s sides require a sweeper-keeper due to their high defensive line, meaning the more proactive Dean Henderson would likely be preferred to the Spaniard.

Ahead of the 24-year-old would be a familiar back four, but with one significant change.

While Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane would almost certainly keep their places, Diogo Dalot could complete the defensive unit ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka due to his superior attacking prowess.

And there would likely be some major changes in the engine room, too. Rangnick prefers to play a 4-2-2-2 formation, meaning the two central midfielders are required to be extremely mobile.

Therefore, a £42.5m move for Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni could be sanctioned, allowing him to partner Donny van de Beek in the middle of the pitch.

Out wide, the stamina and creativity of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes could see them secure regular starting spots, although Jadon Sancho would also feature heavily after proving his pressing credentials at Borussia Dortmund.

And one of Sancho’s former teammates could link up with the England international at Old Trafford once again.

Erling Haaland has long been linked with the Red Devils, and Rangnick’s arrival could prompt the Glazers to meet his reported £154m price tag, with Mason Greenwood completely a fearsome forward line.

– Nosso objetivo inicial era vencer todas as partidas da primeira fase e chegamos muito próximos disso, com 16 vitórias. A excelente campanha da Ponte Preta no Paulista sub-20 é fruto do trabalho do Departamento de Formação de Atletas. Artilheiro da competição com 21 gols, o atacante Yuri é figura constante entre os relacionados do time no Brasileirão. Assim como o meia Felipe Saraiva, lateral-direito Emerson e o zagueiro Reynaldo.

– Toda a campanha na primeira fase foi conquistada sem deixar de fazer o essencial do nosso trabalho que é ter atletas preparados para a equipe principal, como o Felipe Saraiva, que foi efetivado, Reynaldo e Yuri alternando entre Sub-20 e principal e o Emerson, que, além disso, foi convocado para a Seleção Brasileira Sub-20 na disputa do Torneio de Toulon – finalizou o comandante da Macaca.

O primeiro duelo entre Ponte Preta e Votuporanguense acontecerá no próximo sábado, às 15 horas, em Votuporanga. A volta acontecerá no dia 21 de outubro, às 16 horas, em Paulínia.

Manchester United will be hoping to build on their positive result and improved performance against Villarreal last time out when they take on Chelsea in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Red Devils secured qualification to the last-16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday evening, providing them with a much-needed boost coming into this one.

But it’s set to be an extremely tricky test for United, with the hosts currently in imperious form and sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

In his first game in charge, Carrick made some bold selection calls as he looked to inject some life back into the 20-time English champions.

And although the retired midfielder clearly had his charges well organised, some of the personnel who he selected from the off arguably didn’t justify his faith in their ability to affect the play.

One of those players who failed to grasp their chance under Carrick was Anthony Martial.

Following a hugely underwhelming 2020/21 campaign, it was hoped that the France international would return to form this term, but a change in fortunes has yet to materialise.

Against Villarreal, Martial had just 42 touches before he was brought off on the 66-minute mark, failed to have a single shot, didn’t play a single key pass and lost possession eight times, highlighting his ineffective display.

It was just the latest disappointing showing from the 25-year-old in the opening weeks of the current campaign, though, with his dismal performance against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup back in September attracting much criticism.

“His (Martial’s) positioning was, to put it simply, was god awful,” said Mike Parrott of the Manchester Evening News.

“We all saw how absurd it was to see how slow he was when he is supposed to be in his absolute prime or if not even a bit earlier than his prime. He just looked really off the mark, and technically he just wasn’t there.”

Martial has bagged just one goal and provided no assists in his nine outings this season, and with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes waiting in the wings, Carrick must make the bold decision to axe the £250k-per-week liability for the trip to west London.
