Craig Wright, Scotland’s most capped cricketer, has announced his retirement from internationals. Wright, 35, played 194 times for his country since his debut in 1997, which included 20 ODIs, and he will now concentrate on coaching.Wright, who was appointed captain in 2003, led his country on 107 occasions. Under his leadership Scotland won the 2004 Intercontinental Cup and the 2005 ICC Trophy, in addition to a number of victories over county sides. He also led the side to the 2007 World Cup before stepping down from the captaincy.”It has been an immense privilege to have represented my country in a sport I love over the past 12 years, and I am extremely proud to have had the honour of captaining the side during that period,” Wright said. “We have experienced several highs and lows over this time, but I am glad to have been involved during a period where the Scotland team took significant strides forward and became the leading associate nation in the mid-2000s.”Wright’s decision comes during a tumultuous time for Scotland in which they have taken several strides backwards, however. In the recent ICC World Cup Qualifiers, they failed to qualify for the 2011 tournament, and only by the skin of their teeth did they retain their one-day international status. The lack of World Cup status led to Lloyds TSB dropping their sponsorship, and Ryan Watson resigning as captain. He was replaced by Gavin Hamilton who then had a public falling out with John Blain, days before Scotland’s ICC World Twenty20 campaign, which led to Blain’s pulling out of the tournament.”It is important now that everyone involved in Scottish Cricket is working extremely hard to ensure we get things moving in the right direction again after a difficult period recently,” Wright said. “I wish Pete [Steindl] and Gav [Gavin Hamilton] all the best in driving the team forward and bringing further success, and I believe we have a solid group of young players – such as Richie Berrington, Kyle Coetzer, Callum MacLeod and Gordon Goudie – around which the next team can be built. They not only have the appropriate skill level, but also the right character to succeed.”Stepping back from international cricket will allow me to focus on my role as performance development manager. My ambition is to assist the next generation of Scottish cricketers in maximising their potential to raise the quality and quantity of players available at all levels of Scottish cricket.”Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland chief executive, said: “Craig has been one of the most important figures in the Scotland team since his debut, and has represented his country with great skill and passion on a record number of occasions. He played a vital role in the transformation of the national side and can take immense pride in the contribution he made to winning world competitions and beating English county sides.”It is a measure of Craig’s commitment to Scottish cricket that he put off his retirement in recent weeks to assist the side during a busy period when there were injury problems to other bowlers. I am sure now he will be even more focused on developing the next generation of Scottish cricketers in his professional role with us, building on the excellent work already being doing regionally and nationally throughout Scotland. As a role model and coach for aspiring international cricketers I can think of no better person.”

Sheff Wed fans slam Bannan performance

A number of Sheffield Wednesday supporters have laid into Barry Bannan’s performance after the Owls’ 1-1 draw at home to Lincoln City.

Darren Moore is now finding himself under increasing pressure after another disappointing result on Saturday afternoon.

Wednesday had to settle for a point against Lincoln at Hillsborough, with Dennis Adeniran’s opener cancelled out by Lewis Montsma’s late equaliser.

The draw leaves Moore’s side sitting ninth in League One but they should be higher had it not been for continually blowing leads this season, yesterday’s result their third consecutive draw.

One player who was poor against Lincoln was Bannan, with the Scot losing possession a total of 19 times in the match.

The midfielder is often a crowd favourite who is considered one of Wednesday’s most important players – he is their second-best performer this season according to WhoScored metrics – but that wasn’t the case on Saturday.

England seek to maintain momentum

After wrapping up the Test series 2-0, England now switch their focus to the one-day contests against West Indies

Match factsThursday May 21
Start time 10.45 (9.45GMT)Big PictureEngland wrapped up the Test series and regained the Wisden Trophy with impressive efficiency in their final five-day action before the Ashes. However, before thoughts can seriously turn to Australia, there is a busy period of limited-overs action, beginning with this three-match series against West Indies. After the win at Chester-le-Street, Andrew Strauss said that it was important England focussed on their one-day cricket and not think too far ahead. They came back to steal the series in the Caribbean 3-2 with Andrew Flintoff taking a hat-trick in the final match, but yet again Flintoff is injured and on the sidelines. So too is Kevin Pietersen, who has been withdrawn with an Achilles injury, leaving the door open for a possible debut for Eoin MorganWest Indies are always a dangerous one-day team with a batting line-up packed with explosive hitters, none more so than their captain, Chris Gayle, who found top gear in the second innings at Durham with 54 off 43 balls. He might not have much time for Test cricket, but the one-day variety is much more up his street. Dwayne Bravo’s return to the squad adds depth with bat and ball, so although England have been comfortably superior in recent weeks that might change in the coming days.Form guideEngland WWLLW
West Indies LLWWLWatch out for…Ravi Bopara has solved England’s Test No. 3 position for the foreseeable future and now he needs to cement his position at the top of the one-day order. He was promoted to open in India and retained the role in West Indies with a modicum of success, but England are still searching for the ideal combination. His approach is refreshingly simple – “you just attack more balls in one-day cricket” – and with his confidence riding high this is Bopara’s chance to make another position his own.How West Indies could have done with Dwayne Bravo during the Test series, but he was controversially omitted after medical advice said his ankle hadn’t recovered sufficiently. He has spent the last six weeks batting, bowling and diving around at the IPL and his return brings so much to the tourists’ side. He can bat anyway, but favours the ‘finishers’ role, is a brilliant death bowler and is one of best fielders in the world.Team newsAlastair Cook and Graham Onions are the two players who drop out from the Test side and their places are likely to be taken by Owais Shah and Dimitri Mascarenhas. Shah has a point to prove after losing his Test place and failing to break into the Delhi Daredevils side during the IPL and could be joined in the middle-order by Morgan, who has played 23 ODIs for Ireland, or Ian Bell. Kieron Pollard, who played against England in the Caribbean, could join him in the middle order while Darren Sammy is a valuable player in one-day cricket with his tight wicket-to-wicket bowling. Parnell returns to Kent for five weeks

Wayne Parnell, the South Africa fast bowler, has been signed by Kent for another five weeks during the domestic season

Cricinfo staff09-Jul-2009Wayne Parnell, the South Africa fast bowler, has been signed by Kent for another five weeks during the domestic season. Parnell impressed with both ball and bat during his initial six-week stint with the county and was one of the best bowlers during the World Twenty20 in June.”Wayne is very keen to get on with the job, he put a request in to come back and play county cricket,” coach Simon Willis told . “He felt it improved his game immensely last time so he’s keen to make an impression and hopefully that will start at the Oval.”There has been a lot of interest from IPL and other countries, with regard to his services. The World Twenty20 certainly put Wayne Parnell on the map.”Parnell is expected to play Kent’s Championship match against Surrey. He will be available for the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals, three county championship games and a Pro40 match between July 10 and August 4.

Everton must axe Cenk Tosun

Everton striker Cenk Tosun is set to be offered a way out of his Goodison Park nightmare, with Besiktas reportedly keen to secure his signature over the coming months.

What’s the story?

According to Turkish outlet FotoMac (as relayed by SportWitness), the Black Eagles have begun work to re-sign the 30-year-old after two previous spells with the club.

The report states that Besiktas manager Sergen Yalçın wants Tosun “very much,” while the club’s president Ahmet Nur Cebi has reportedly said in a statement: “We definitely want Cenk in the team.”

FotoMac also claim that the officials of the two clubs have agreed to come face to face during the upcoming international break where the terms of the transfer will be discussed during a meeting.

However, with Tosun set to become a free agent next summer, the Istanbul outfit have yet to decide whether to splash out in January and immediately secure his signature or wait an extra few months in order to avoid paying a transfer fee.

Rafa Benitez must axe him

Tosun has struggled to find his best form since arriving on English shores halfway through the 2017/18 campaign for a whopping £27m as former Everton manager Sam Allardyce looked to add a prolific target man to their attack.

The 6-foot striker had scored 41 goals in 96 Turkish Super Lig games since the start of the 2014/15 season and it was hoped that he’d be able to hit the back of the net on a regular basis following his switch to the Premier League.

Unfortunately for Tosun, though, things haven’t turned out as he had hoped during his time as a Toffees player.

Despite making a solid start – bagging five goals in 14 league games during his maiden campaign – a miserly five further strikes followed in his following 35 top-flight appearances between 2018/19 and 2019/20, with five of those outings coming during a loan spell at Crystal Palace.

His underwhelming performances led to severe criticism from certain sections of the media and fanbase alike, with Andy Gray claiming the Turkey international was “not good enough” for Everton following a disappointing display against West Ham United.

“There’s a lot of players that they have got that are out of the side. What he needs to do is get them all fit,” he told beIN SPORTS back in 2018.

“What my problem will be is I didn’t see it today. I didn’t see Tosun being good enough. We saw Oumar Niasse not good enough at this level. When I say this level, I mean the top half of the Premier League. Those boys are not good enough.”

With that in mind, one could argue that he’s even worse than new signing Salomon Rondon. He’s yet to score for the Toffees but that is mainly down to a lack of fitness. His game time would also suggest that he’s firmly in the manager’s plans, an honour that has never fallen on the shoulders of Tosun.

As a result, new Blues boss Benitez should axe the £60,000-per-week flop during the winter window, adding further funds to the Spaniard’s budget ahead of his potential rebuild on Merseyside.

A partir do clássico.

Tabu no Allianz Parque – quatro jogos e quatro derrotas

Tabu no Allianz Parque
