Newcastle consider Favre appointment

An update has emerged on out-of-work manager Lucien Favre, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope, the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager is in the frame to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

Hope has claimed that Bruce is set to be sacked by the new owners, PIF, and Favre is one name on a long list of potential successors to the ex-Aston Villa and Sunderland coach.

Delight

This key update from Hope will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling delighted as, on paper, it would be a shrewd appointment by the new owners. The 63-year-old has an impressive C.V with a history of achieving success and could be perfect for what the Magpies need at this moment in time.

To paraphrase a famous saying, Premier League super teams are not built in a day. It will take time for PIF to invest in the squad and get Newcastle to a point, if they ever do, where they can be competing at the highest level domestically and in Europe.

This is why Favre could be the ideal candidate for Newcastle as he has a history of performing well without having a mega-squad at his disposal straight away.

He achieved four straight top-eight Bundesliga finishes with Borussia Monchengladbach before finding himself at Ligue 1 side Nice – finishing third and eighth in his two years at the club.

Interestingly, he signed current Magpies dynamo Allan Saint-Maximin for Nice in 2017, with the winger producing five goals and nine assists under Favre’s management. This means that he could get the best out of the French winger at St. James’ Park, having worked with him previously.

Favre also showed that he can do well with top players, such as Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and Erling Haaland at his disposal. In two full seasons at Borussia Dortmund, he led the German giants to second place behind Bayern Munich, averaging over two points per game in both years. This means that he has the experience and quality as a coach to work with teams in the top-ten bracket, whilst also being able to perform well at a title challenger like Dortmund.

Therefore, he could be the perfect man to handle Newcastle’s potential transition from a team battling against relegation to one competing for titles. This is why the fans should be delighted that PIF are looking at him to replace Bruce in the coming weeks.

Tendulkar salutes Dhoni's captaincy

Sachin Tendulkar has praised the leadership skills of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has overseen a successful six months for India after taking over as captain in all three formats

Tendulkar on MS Dhoni: “He has a sharp brain, his approach was pretty clear and not complicated”•AFP

Sachin Tendulkar has praised the leadership skills of MS Dhoni, who has overseen a successful six months for India after taking over as captain in all three formats.”I’m extremely happy and delighted at the way he [Dhoni] has conducted himself,” Tendulkar said. “He is a balanced guy, is always on his toes all the time. Before he was made the captain, standing in the slips I interacted with him, and [he] picked [up a] lot of things which clearly indicated that he has a sharp brain, his approach was pretty clear and not complicated.”India are fresh from their first Test series win in New Zealand in 41 years, and have also defeated Australia and England at home in the past eight months. India have an impressive record under Dhoni’s leadership, winning five out of seven Tests and losing none. Dhoni also led India to their longest winning-streak in one-dayers during comprehensive series wins over England and Sri Lanka, and most notably, led them to victory in the World Twenty20 in 2007. He’s captained his team in 51 ODIs, winning 31 of them.Dhoni’s record with the bat as captain is significantly better than his overall stats. In the seven Tests he’s led India, he averages 60 as compared to his overall average of 37.73. His figures have been boosted by seven half-centuries, four of which came against Australia at home. He scored fifties in each innings against New Zealand in the rain-affected final Test in Wellington, where India fell just two wickets shy of wrapping up the series 2-0. The trend is similar in ODIs as well. He was India’s second-highest run-getter in 2008 and averages 57.81 in 51 matches as captain, as opposed to 49.26 overall.Tendulkar on the multiple-captain theorySachin Tendulkar was not dismissive of John Buchanan’s idea of multiple captains for each team, but was clear that the Mumbai Indians, the team he represents in the IPL, will stick to its own plans. “Let them (Kolkata Knight Riders) do whatever they want. At Mumbai Indians we will do what we want,” Tendulkar told reporters on Tuesday. “It is not a matter of multiple captaincy but a matter of multiple strategists. Having one captain does not mean he himself does all the jobs. Other players also give him suggestions,” he said.”It is always nice for a captain to have more options. That is what we generally do.”Another experienced player who was impressed with Dhoni’s captaincy was VVS Laxman. “Dhoni is one of the best captains I have played under,” he said. “He is so calm and composed. He exudes a lot of confidence. It’s a great feeling to play under him.”One of Dhoni’s biggest accomplishments as a leader has been forging a strong team spirit, and former captain Tendulkar said he relished playing the role of a senior member. “To players like Harbhajan Singh or Yuvraj Singh, I’m like their elder brother. I share information not just with them but also with other members of the side. It’s a terrific atmosphere in the dressing room and it’s not just one-way traffic,” he said. “We learn from each other and if someone has some issues, there is the coach. Generally it’s a great atmosphere and I enjoy being part of this side.”When asked about his decision to not be part of the national Twenty20 side, Tendulkar said he did not want to upset a winning combination. India had won the inaugural World Twenty in South Africa two years ago, but Tendulkar had not been part of that team because of fitness problems. “It’s a team sport so, even if there is one weak link, it affects the whole team. I didn’t want it to happen. The team went to South Africa and did well. They settled quite nicely. I don’t want to disturb the combination now when they are going terrific.”

– Nós amadurecemos bastante no decorrer do campeonato.

O time que jogar melhor e estiver melhor preparado vai vencer a partida.

LFC fans criticise Andy Robertson’s display

A number of Liverpool fans have criticised Andy Robertson’s first-half performance against Atletico Madrid in their Champions League clash.

The Reds are back in European action this evening, making the testing trip to Spain to face reigning La Liga champions Atletico.

Diego Simeone’s side knocked Liverpool out of Europe back in 2019/20, so revenge is certainly in the air from a Reds perspective.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won their opening two Group B matches against AC Milan and Porto and another victory tonight would all but book their place in the last-16 with three matches to spare.

The manager has fielded a strong starting lineup for game, but despite racing out to a two-goal lead courtesy of Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita, one player who has struggled to impress is Robertson.

Blows below the belt, and over the boundary

Andrew McGlashan presents the plays of the day from Chester-le-Street

Ramnaresh Sarwan got a serious working-over from Stuart Broad•Getty Images

Blow of the day
A cricket ball travelling at close to 90mph can cause real pain if it hits you – especially in a certain delicate area of the body. Ramnaresh Sarwan was facing James Anderson when a thunderbolt jagged back and struck him a precise blow in the box. Sarwan immediately keeled over in pain and writhed around on the ground in agony. The England players huddled round in concern, but when it became clear that Sarwan would recover the odd smirk and chuckle began to emerge. Sarwan needed a few swigs of water and a couple of deep breaths before resuming. He may have also have needed to ask the umpire, how many balls remaining?Best no-ball of the day
Perhaps one of the most important no-balls in England’s fairly recent history was the one that allowed Andrew Flintoff an extra delivery at Ricky Ponting during that thrilling over on the third day at Edgbaston, in 2005, which the Australia captain edged behind. Stuart Broad managed something similar here, albeit in more low-key circumstances. He’d overstepped in his 10th over, but with the seventh delivery he found Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s edge from round the wicket to give England a key breakthrough during the morning session.Working-over of the day
Broad was England’s star performer during the opening session as he showed the value of someone able to run in and hit the pitch hard. As the home side struggled to shift Sarwan for the umpteenth time in recent months Broad went into bouncer mode and gave him a real roughing-up. It was clearly a planned move as Andrew Strauss brought in a short leg and one ball nearly took the glove to Alastair Cook. Next over, Broad skimmed another past Sarwan’s helmet before the best of the lot reared at his throat, taking the glove as the batsman tried to fend it away and the ball looped into the gully. It was a top quality performance to remove a top quality batsman.Miss of the day
It’s early days for Tim Bresnan’s Test career, but if he finishes without a wicket to his name he will look back on the chance that went begging this afternoon. Coming round the wicket to Sulieman Benn he found the outside edge which flew at a neat catchable height on a line bisecting the wicketkeeper and first slip. Neither man moved for the catch, though, and the edge flew away to the boundary. It was going well to the right of Strauss at first slip so it’s fair to say it was Matt Prior’s catch, especially as he’s the one wearing the big gloves. All Bresnan could do was hold his head and hope another chance comes his way.Shot of the day
After the final day of this game it’s back into coloured-clothing mode, which will make Chris Gayle feel much better. The way he came out and started his second innings suggested he was already in one-day mode, particularly the stand-and-deliver drive over mid-on that carried the boundary for a huge six. James Anderson, who was happy to give Fidel Edwards a chirp earlier on, didn’t mutter a word and just turned on his heels to prepare for the next ball.Over of the day
This could easily have gone to Broad, but it only seems fair that Graham Onions gets a mention for his late double-strike to remove Sarwan and Gayle. That’s a decent pair of wickets especially after it had been a rocky start to the second innings for Onions as Gayle tucked into some short balls. However, Onions responded by trapping Sarwan lbw then got his revenge on Gayle when the West Indies captain edged a lifting delivery to first slip. The crowd wasn’t huge, but they gave the home-town boy a hearty ovation.Dedication of the day
Sarwan’s century seemed to mean a lot him as he screamed in celebration and punched the air. At the end-of-day press conference it became clear why as he dedicated his ton to a friend from Trinidad called Zalina who recently passed away. “I’d like to dedicate this hundred to a very close family friend of mine who passed away about two-and-half weeks ago,” he said. “I met her when I was about 13 or 14 and she has been very supportive of me over the years. I’d like wish her family all the best.”

Jota must start for Liverpool against Man U

After convincingly beating Watford 5-0 in their previous Premier League outing followed by a 3-2 Champions League win away at Atletico Madrid in midweek, Liverpool have a big game on their hands with Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, who are currently four points behind the Reds in the league table.

Jota should start

In terms of who Reds manager Jurgen Klopp could include in his starting XI this afternoon, we feel that Diogo Jota should definitely be in it.

Liverpool signed the Portugal forward in September 2020 from fellow Premier League club Wolves in a deal worth a reported £41m.

In his debut season with the Merseyside club, the 24-year-old – who is currently valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt – netted 13 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.

So far this season, Jota – who has previously been described as a “monster” by Liverpool’s assistant manager Pep Lijnders – has scored three goals in seven Premier League appearances.

Furthermore, he has averaged 2.6 shots and 1.6 key passes per game, showing how much of an attacking threat he has been for the Reds in the Premier League. That illustrates how he could be a terrifying prospect for United’s defenders to face on Sunday.

Even though he didn’t start in midweek against Atletico, Jota came on as a second half substitute, replacing Sadio Mane just after the hour mark. He managed to win Liverpool’s penalty, won three out of his five duels and ultimately earned himself an overall match rating of 7/10, higher than most Liverpool players who started the match according to SofaScore.

In terms of who he could replace in the starting XI tody, we feel that Jota could slot in the team ahead of Roberto Firmino, who failed to impress against Atletico as he didn’t register even one shot on target.

Whether or not Klopp chooses to start Jota, the Reds will definitely be aiming to secure all three points to keep them towards the top of the league table, especially considering how Chelsea recorded a resounding 7-0 win over Norwich City yesterday.

Ele assinou a demissão.
