Lancashire limp on rain-hit day

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, making his Lancashire debut against his former county, survived a mini collapse today as the visitors reached 136 for 5 before rain ended play at 3pm

20-Jul-2010
ScorecardShivnarine Chanderpaul, making his Lancashire debut against his former county, survived a mini collapse today as the visitors reached 136 for 5 before rain ended play at 3pm. The West Indian ended the day on 30 not out after lobbing the final ball just over mid-off when shaping to pull Callum Thorp. After being granted a flying start by the erratic Liam Plunkett, Lancashire slipped from 52 without loss to 59 for 3 after being put in as the change bowlers capitalised on favourable conditions. The ball swung under the overcast skies and there was also life in the pitch, as Mitch Claydon proved when finding the edge of both openers’ bats as they pushed forward.Stephen Moore was first to go, caught behind for 27, and Paul Horton followed for 29 when he edged at shoulder height to Michael Di Venuto at second slip. It was just as well for Durham that Thorp was at his most miserly to counter the profligacy of Plunkett. Thorp had figures of two for 14 from 14.2 overs while Plunkett conceded 45 runs off seven overs. When he last bowled, Plunkett had performed well for England Lions and Durham skipper Phil Mustard gambled by asking him to bowl the first over. With Steve Harmison at the other end, Plunkett conceded all the 11 runs which came off the first four overs and then saw the first ball of the fifth hooked over long leg for six by Moore. The ex-Worcestershire man cut the next ball for four, forcing Mustard to bring on Thorp. His away swing accounted for Mark Chilton, who edged to Dale Benkenstein at third slip, then Paul Collingwood struck with his 10th ball in his first championship appearance for two years. He nipped one back to have Steven Croft lbw for four before Tom Smith put on 36 with Chanderpaul, who survived a sharp chance off Collingwood on 10, when an edge flew low to Di Venuto’s right at second slip.Thorp had the one post-lunch success when extra bounce saw Smith caught behind for 23 when playing defensively on the back foot. Luke Sutton contributed 14 to an unbroken stand of 26 with Chanderpaul.

Bangladesh A completed a 2-0 series sweep against Zimbabwe A in the unofficial Test series, after winning by 118 runs on the final day in Fatullah. Saqlain Sajib was once again the catalyst behind the victory, as he picked up five wickets, taking his tally in the series to 21 after he had snared 15 wickets in the first match. The hosts batted for an hour and 40 minutes, and after Naeem Islam reached his fifty, they declared the innings on 172 for 6, setting Zimbabwe A 299 for a win.In the sixth over, the visitors’ captain Vusi Sibanda got out to Sajib and the left-arm spinner soon followed it up with the wicket of Mark Vermeulen. Three more wickets fell before Zimbabwe A reached 100, but Brian Chari and Joylord Gumbie engineered a brief recovery by adding 58 for the sixth wicket.Once Naeem took the wicket of Gumbie, Zimbabwe A soon folded, even though Chari went on to make 74 with two fours and three sixes. Legspinner Jubair Hossain finished with three wickets, while there was one each for Kamrul Islam Rabbi and Naeem.Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will next play a three-match ODI series starting on September 28 in Fatullah.

Late Boje blast earns Northants tie

02-Jul-2010
ScorecardFormer South Africa international Herschelle Gibbs’ first century in Twenty20 cricket was not enough to earn Yorkshire a win as Nicky Boje somehow snatched Northamptonshire a tie at Wantage Road.Gibbs hammered a magnificent 101 not out off 53 balls with his explosive knock including five sixes and eight fours, as Yorkshire made an imposing 180 for 3 off their 20 overs. Improbably, with Northamptonshire needing 13 off the final ball, Richard Pyrah’s no ball was clouted for six by Boje over long leg with Gibbs’ former South Africa team-mate smashing the following delivery through midwicket for four to claim a share of the spoils.Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat first, but they got off to a bad start when, in the third over, Adam Lyth launched Chaminda Vaas to Alex Wakely at extra cover. Captain Jacques Rudolph made 14 before chipping Boje to Northamptonshire skipper Andrew Hall at extra cover. But Gibbs made it to 50 off just 28 balls as he continued to punish the Steelbacks attack. He and Anthony McGrath added 58 runs together for the third wicket before the latter, who made 16, hammered Lee Daggett to David Willey at long-onAfter his dismissal, the visitors really cut loose with Gibbs and Jonathan Bairstow blasting 73 runs between them in the last five overs. Bairstow smashed two sixes in consecutive balls off Vaas in the penultimate over on his way to an unbeaten 32 off 14 balls, with Gibbs claiming his century in the final over from 53 balls.Chasing 181, Northamptonshire openers David Sales and Vaas raced to 50 off just 27 balls as they took the game to the Yorkshire attack. Former West Indies paceman Tino Best finally made the breakthrough when he forced Sales, who was just one short of a deserved half-century, to edge to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy. The in-form Vaas did make his 50, off 38 balls including two sixes, before smashing Adil Rashid to Azeem Rafiq at mid-wicket. Elton Chigumbura made 11 before launching Pyrah to Rashid at deep midwicket as the wheels began to fall off the Steelbacks chase. Two wickets by McGrath in the penultimate over threatened to seal Northamptonshire’s fate as O’Brien was caught by Lyth at long-off before Hall smashed him to Pyrah at deep midwicket. But Boje struck a six and a four off the last two deliveries to claim an unlikely tie.

England, India set for Anderson hearing

The hearing into the Trent Bridge incident between James Anderson and Ravindra Jadeja is scheduled on Friday, with massive implications on the series

The Southampton Test has ended but the tussle between the two sides will continue into a sixth day with the hearing into the Trent Bridge incident between James Anderson and Ravindra Jadeja scheduled on Friday, with massive implications on the series.India charged Anderson with a Level 3 offence before the second Test, at Lord’s, following an alleged altercation in the first. India contend that Anderson pushed Jadeja when the players were walking back for lunch on day two of the Trent Bridge Test. If found guilty, he could face a ban of up to four Tests. The hearing will take place in India’s team hotel, with the judicial commissioner Gordon Lewis listening in via Skype from Australia. Jadeja and Anderson will be mandatory presences. Apart from their legal team, India are likely to be have captain MS Dhoni, coach Duncan Fletcher and physiotherapist Evan Speechly in attendance. An ICC ethics and regulatory lawyer will be present. The hearing will be almost like a court case, with oral witnesses, legal submissions, cross examinations and video evidence if it exists. If the video evidence doesn’t exist, it is, like Sydney 2008, one team’s word against the other. England’s response during Jadeja’s hearing was that the India allrounder had turned around aggressively, and that Anderson had acted in self-defence.The onus will be on the ICC to provide evidence. Principles of natural justice will take effect: ICC’s legal team will have to prove Anderson’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt to get their desired result, a sentence under Level 3. Jadeja, who was found guilty under Level 1 (after being charged at Level 2) by match referee David Boon in the same case, has earned the right to appeal his verdict. His case will also come up for hearing during the same meeting.Lewis will have 48 hours to deliver his verdict. If Anderson is found guilty under Level 3, there is a provision for an appeal against it. Only the player found guilty or the ICC CEO can appeal, within seven days of having received the verdict. The ICC’s Head of Legal would then appoint an Appeals Panel, comprising three members from ICC Code of Conduct commission. However, Lewis’ decision will remain in effect while under appeal, unless any properly convened Appeal Panel orders otherwise. India have no right of appeal if Anderson is not found guilty under Level 3.Anderson’s hearing will follow the day after he was adjudged Man of the Match in the Ageas Bowl Test. “I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Anderson said. “I want to be playing at Old Trafford, my home Test, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.”We’ve done brilliantly, the ECB have done a great job of keeping everything separate. So once we get to the ground it was all about the cricket and how we would win the Test match – and that’s exactly what we did this week. Everyone did it brilliantly. Once we got on the field the only thoughts we had were winning.”
