Nottinghamshire’s Championship hopes were finally extinguished at 3.57pm when Charlie Shreck struck a catch to backward point and Hampshire completed a massive 203-run victory. In reality, they were over when the day started. It would have needed a miracle for Nottinghamshire after being set 442 in 76 overs and Dimitri Mascarenhas’ four top-order wickets ensured there would be no Lazarus-like revival from the home side. Durham were already on the team bus back home and now the celebrations can truly begin for them.As soon as Kent were bowled out earlier today, Nottinghamshire’s pursuit of a second title in four years was over barring an extraordinary run chase. Twelve months ago Lancashire almost pulled off a miracle against Surrey, coming up 24 runs short at The Oval, but Nottinghamshire had fewer overs to repeat them. The asking rate was 5.82 an over before they even began and they were emotionally gone, having seen the title wrestled away from them.Chris Read trudged off as the unbeaten batsman and it will take him a while to get over the last couple of weeks. Losing the deciding Pro40 match against Sussex was one thing, but seeing the Championship slip away with such a comprehensive defeat will be a bitter pill to swallow. Second place will be little consolation.”Where we really had our opportunity was on the second day with our batting,” Read said. “That to me was the way we were going to win, having elected to field first. We’d bowled them out for 200, which was fantastic, then we should have been looking at getting 350-400. We were in a reasonable position to do that, then it all fell apart.”They showed their intent by promoting Graeme Swann to open, but he lasted just 10 balls before having a wild heave at Mascarenhas and losing his leg stump. Two balls later Mark Wagh edged to second slip and, after a brief stand between Will Jefferson and Samit Patel, Jefferson drove the last ball before lunch straight to mid-off.This innings had all the makings of going into free fall. Nottinghamshire’s players probably wanted to leave as quickly as possible and forget about the last few weeks. Mascarenhas continued his one-man wicket-taking display when Ashwell Prince lobbed a return catch. Prince hasn’t produced the runs Nottinghamshire had hoped for when he joined following South Africa’s Test tour.Patel showed some resilience with a flamboyant display of striking, even if he had nothing to lose. Still, the sweetness of his striking again caught the eye, following his hundred against Surrey last week and first-innings 70 here. He is certainly finishing the season on a high, but will look back on his drive to mid-off on the second day – leading to Nottinghamshire’s collapse – as a crucial moment in this match. His fifty came off 51 balls and he’d struck 14 boundaries before being brilliantly caught by Mascarenhas, running backwards at least 30 yards from mid-on to take the ball over his shoulder. Mascarenhas covered the same distance in his celebration and Liam Dawson enjoyed his first wicket of the match. Bilal Shafayat then drove a low catch to mid-on and stood there before being given out following a consultation between the umpires. Both Shafayat and Nottinghamshire already knew their fate, though.Hampshire could have been more aggressive in setting their target, but there was lingering resentment about a match at the conclusion of the 2005 season, when Kent accepted Nottinghamshire’s one-sided offer to chase 420 in 70 overs to stay in the Championship race. It gave Dawson the chance to reach his maiden first-class century, off 153 balls, including a cover-driven six off Shreck. Hampshire were in no mood to give Nottinghamshire a sniff, and the Durham players will be the first to thank them for that.

EU ruling could spell end to Kolpaks

The number of Kolpak players in county cricket could be set for a drastic reduction after the European Union decided on a new interpretation of the employment law

Cricinfo staff22-Jul-2008The number of Kolpak players in county cricket could be set for a drastic reduction after the European Union decided on a new interpretation of the employment law that has brought about a huge influx of players from South Africa and the Caribbean.Under the rules of the Cotonou Treaty, free trade exists between the European Community and many African, Pacific and Caribbean countries, and in 2004, the Czech handball player, Maros Kolpak, won a ruling from the European Court of Justice which allowed him to play professionally in Germany without be classed as a foreigner. That set a precedent that has had a major impact on English cricket, with players such as Jacques Rudolph, Martin van Jaarsveld and Omari Banks choosing to ply their trade in England rather than seek international honours for South Africa or West Indies.A similar situation exists in French rugby union, which has up to 150 South Africans on its books, and as a result, a campaign was launched by the Central Council of Physical Recreation. It has resulted in the EU, under French presidency, ruling that the Cotonou Treaty was designed for the free trade of goods and services and should not be regarded as free movement of labour. It promises to be a significant development in the ECB’s battle to reduce the number of Kolpak players in county cricket, and a spokesman said: “The ECB have noted the recent developments and are looking at the possible implications of that.”One possible upshot would be for existing Kolpak players to be permitted to complete their existing contracts, but for future signings to be regarded as overseas players.

Kane Williamson led a fightback for New Zealand Under-19s as they built a 156-run lead against England in the second Test at Worcester. Greg Smith had just enough time to bring up his 150 when he ran out of partners, but not before England had taken a first-innings advantage of 30 in reaching 402, with Ben Brown making 49.New Zealand’s second innings got off to a shaky start as Ian Saxelby dismissed both openers to have them 38 for 2 and three runs later Stuart Meaker claimed another wicket, Fraser Colton for a duck. Meaker struck again soon after with the wicket of Craig Chapoca and they were in trouble at 65 for 4.But Williamson stood firm, reaching 108 by the close from 113 balls, and he was supported by Harry Boam who brought up his half-century just before the end of play. New Zealand will have to play aggressive cricket on the final day if they want to level the series after losing the opening Test at Taunton.

Tottenham ‘progressing’ in Martinez talks

According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur are now ‘progressing’ in talks to sign Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez.

The Lowdown: Martinez saga emerges…

The Times also first broke news of Spurs and the Nerazzurri agreeing a fee for the Argentine which could reach ‘more than £60 million’, with reliable correspondent football.london Alasdair Gold also backing this up on Twitter.

However, Romelu Lukaku’s move to Chelsea seemingly put a spanner in the works, as Fabrizio Romano says Inter have now changed their mind and don’t want to sell.

Intriguingly, his agent has also come out to say that Martinez and Inter are set for contract renewal talks, but FcInterNews believe that Spurs could still tempt the 23-year-old into leaving Italy.

The Latest: Spurs talks ‘progressing’ for Martinez…

As per an update by The Times, a move for Martinez certainly isn’t dead in the water and Lilywhites talks are ‘progressing’ over a potential £60m deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the reliable news source indicates that Spurs are moving forward in their negotiations for the player despite the statement of his agent and Inter’s reported U-turn.

After Spurs’ current transfer activity, it is stated that the club – and by extension managing director Fabio Paratici – are ‘far from finished’ in terms of building the foundations for this season. Alongside talks to sign Martinez, they are also ready to swoop for Villarreal defender Pau Torres, although it is claimed that the player has ‘serious reservations’ over leaving Estadio de la Cerámica.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Signing Martinez as a possible partner to Harry Kane, or even as his replacement depending on developments, would certainly be Paratici’s biggest coup yet.

The exciting forward bagged 19 goals and 11 assists and 48 appearances for Inter last season and has even been called ‘spectacular’ by Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi (talkSPORT).

At such a young age, Martinez also comes with plenty of sell-on value and could represent a big money maker for Spurs in years to come – if they decide to cash in, that is.

Indeed, somehow snapping him up would be quite the move by Tottenham.

Newcastle United make bid for Jens Cajuste

Newcastle United have made an offer for FC Midtjylland’s Jens Cajuste, according to a reliable journalist.

What’s the story?

Despite the Magpies agreeing a fee with Arsenal’s Joe Willock, it appears Steve Bruce isn’t done with strengthening his midfield ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

And, writing on Twitter, RMC Sport’s Loic Tanzi, claimed: “Newcastle have made an offer of € 14million + 2million Bonus to Midtjylland for Jens Cajuste. Rennes have yet to make a fourth offer but the competition is now intensifying #Mercato#RMCLive”

Fans will be buzzing

With his experience playing in the Champions League, and at the age of 22, Cajuste fits the bill as a player who could really freshen up Newcastle’s midfield with some young legs and energy – much like Willock brought to the table last season when he arrived on loan from Arsenal.

A profile done by Leeds Live, said of the Midtjylland powerhouse: “Cajuste is an all-action midfielder whose attributes look ready-made for Premier League football. Tough tackling, close control and accurate passing are seen as his main strengths but he offers everything you would want in a player of his position.

“Standing at 6 foot 2, he is dominant both in the air and on the surface which would provide vital stability in the middle of the park for Leeds. The 21-year-old also enjoys exhibiting his flair with a number of fancy but effective touches and passes being a particular stand-out feature of his overall game.”

With Willock only 21 himself, Newcastle could be looking at a starting midfield pairing who are both incredibly young and with vast amounts of potential to really grow and develop at St James’ Park.

It’s an exciting prospect that Magpies fans can look forward to with real hope for the future, and they will surely be buzzing with Tanzi’s latest update on their move for Cajuste.

What’s just as important, and will have supporters optimistic for the rest of the window, is that they seemingly have the funds to sign both Willock and Cajuste after reports in recent months had suggested Bruce would have virtually little to spend this summer.

Meanwhile, Newcastle could sign a dream Joe Willock partner in this star…

Ganguly not hanging up boots yet

Sourav Ganguly has brushed off suggestions of his ODI retirement after being left out of India’s preliminary squad of 30 for the Champions Trophy

Sourav Ganguly has brushed off suggestions of his retirement after being left out of India’s preliminary squad of 30 for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September.”I’ve been out of India’s one-day team for the last three months and I am not going to play one-dayers for the next three. So I’m not thinking about ODIs at the moment,” Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata. “I’m concentrating on Tests and the upcoming Sri Lanka series.”I’m still enjoying cricket,” he said, “and as long as I do that, I’m not going to hang up my boots.”One of the challenges ahead would be facing Ajantha Mendis, who rattled India’s ODI team with figures of 6 for 13 in the Asia Cup final in Karachi. Mendis is also contracted with the Indian Premier League’s Kolkata Knight Riders, captained by Ganguly.”He [Mendis] is an excellent prospect. Has a lot of variety,” Ganguly said. “But I have faced him in the nets when he came here to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Also, players like Sachin [Tendulkar], Rahul [Dravid], [VVS] Laxman are very good against spin bowling.”I’m doing some home work to counter his bowling,” Ganguly said. “I have special plans for him. We have to read him off the hand. It will be too late if you start picking him off the wicket.”Watching him on TV, I got the impression that he relies more on change of pace … his legspinner doesn’t turn much.” Ganguly also pointed out Sri Lanka had Muttiah Muralitharan in their ranks. “But I think Murali would be a bigger threat. He has variation and pace and can turn the ball a mile. He is in a different league altogether.”On Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to sit out of the Test series in Sri Lanka, Ganguly said: “It’s his personal decision. Being the captain and a wicketkeeper-batsman, Dhoni takes a lot of pressure. So it’s natural to feel fatigued. But very few cricketers can afford to take a break.”I don’t remember pulling out of a Test series because of fatigue when I was the captain,” he said. “It also depends on your position in the side; I’m sure not many players, with a place in the side not guaranteed, will be able to do that. I know only one player who has been able to do it successfully — Sachin Tendulkar.”Ganguly, though, played down the IPL factor. “I don’t think it opens up the IPL versus country debate.” He also disagreed with the view that ODI cricket was on the decline thanks to Twenty20. “I was in England recently. I went to watch a one-dayer between New Zealand and England. It was a full house.”So I don’t think people don’t like ODIs anymore. I’m sure when the ODI format returns to India, we’ll see the same packed house as it was earlier.”

PCB sacks World Cup organising committee official

The Pakistan board has sacked Saleem Altaf, the chief executive officer of the World Cup organising committee, shortly after the leaking of an email from Nasim Ashraf

The Pakistan board has sacked Saleem Altaf, a senior board official, reportedly after alleging that he has leaked sensitive information to the press.Though it appears as if the leaked email from Nasim Ashraf, the board chairman, criticising the Pakistan side for their embarrassing 140-run loss to India on Tuesday was the reason behind the sacking, a broader story has been at work.”Altaf’s services were no longer required. It has nothing to do with the leaking of the email,” PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi told Cricinfo. It is believed that conversations Altaf has had with several journalists over a period of time were being recorded by the board. Transcripts of these conversations were read out to him this afternoon. Altaf was then told that he had been leaking sensitive information to the press about the board and was given a choice to either resign or be sacked. Altaf reportedly refused to resign and asked to be chargesheeted for the allegations. He was later escorted from the board headquarters in Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, by security guards.Altaf, a trained lawyer himself, is now considering legal action against the board. “The acts of the chairman are unlawful, especially with regards to taping of my conversations. I am seeking legal advice about this and will act accordingly,” Altaf told Cricinfo.Though he has worked in the selection committee in the past, Altaf was appointed by the PCB in this current stint in March 2005. His first duty was as manager of the Pakistan side touring India that month. Under Shaharyar Khan’s tenure as chairman, Altaf became one of the seniormost decision-makers at the board. But after Ashraf took over, Altaf was widely thought to have been sidelined into his current role as director special projects, in charge of the organising committee for the World Cup 2011. Altaf played 21 Tests for Pakistan between 1967 and 1978 as a lively fast-medium bowler, ending up with 46 Test wickets.

Gers close in on Alegria

According to The Daily Record, Glasgow Rangers are closing in on the signing of Juan Alegria from FC Honka.

The Lowdown: Gers prepare for Malmo clash

The Gers started their 2021/22 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Livingston in the Premiership – they already find themselves three points ahead of their fierce city rivals Celtic.

Now, they will face Swedish side Malmo in their third Champions League qualifying round as they aim to reach the group stages of the competition.

Ahead to the crucial match in southern Sweden, it seems the Gers have kickstarted some more transfer business after last week’s signing of Charlie McCann.

The Latest: Gers close in Alegria

The Gers were believed to be very close to capturing to capturing the 19-year-old during the January transfer window, but problems caused by Brexit delayed the deal.

Now, though, he is said to be within touching distance of finally completing that switch to the 55-time Scottish champions.

He would become the fifth signing of the summer at Ibrox, after McCann’s arrival added to three senior signings.

The Verdict: One for the future

So far during his career, the 19-year-old has managed four goals in four matches for Honka’s second team, but just one in 23 for the first team (Transfermarkt). With a number of options available for Steven Gerrard upfront, Alegria is unlikely to be challenging for a starting spot any time soon – this is a transfer for the future.

Alegria is from Colombia, just like Rangers’ star striker Alfredo Morelos. The younger of the two has admitted he is looking forward to getting to Ibrox to be able to learn from Morelos (The Scottish Sun).

If he can turn that adoration into even half the impact the 25-year-old has had with the Gers, he will prove to be a top signing.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid with this journalist’s tweet.
