England fast bowler Steve Harmison has signed a four-year deal with Durham that will keep him at Chester-le-Street till 2013. Harmison, 31, may be having a torrid time internationally, yo-yoed in and out of the England squad, but he had an impressive 2009 with the Division One side, picking up fifty Championship wickets to take his career tally to over 400 first-class wickets.”I have always loved playing cricket for Durham and I’m incredibly proud to represent the club and be part of the setup here,” Harmison said. “I’m looking forward to the next four seasons, especially 2010 as we look to win the Championship for a record third year.”Harmison, however, insisted that his England career wasn’t over. He played two Tests in the Ashes, took five wickets but was omitted for the tour of South Africa. Commenting on his omission, he understood the national selectors’ plans of building a team for the future.”I will go out like I did this year and the year before that to try and take wickets for Durham,” Harmison was quoted in the . “If that sees my name put in the hat to play for England again and I can be of service, I will be happy to do that.”But the way it has been explained to me is that England are trying to move on to the next level for their next big series in Australia in 2010. They don’t see me being a part of that and I think I would struggle because of all the international cricket between the last Test I played at the Oval and that first Ashes Test in Brisbane next year.”England have made their decision to build for the future, which is fine by me. They are going through an exciting time, they are going with a group of young fast bowlers to South Africa which will be helpful for them. I hope they do well. If I knew it wasn’t possible for me to go to Australia in 2010, then I would come out and retire [from international cricket] for the sake of everybody.”Harmison, in fact, claimed the wicket that clinched the County Championship in both of Durham’s title wins in 2008 and 2009, and was named the county’s Bowler of the Year for the second year running. Despite the achievements, Harmison failed to make England’s squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.Durham head coach Geoff Cook, however, was delighted that Harmison had committed his future. “Stephen is a huge asset to our team, he has a great presence, both on the field and in the dressing room, and his commitment and dedication to the Club has always been fantastic,” Cook said. The sentiment was similar from David Harker, Durham’s chief executive. “Stephen is a great performer for Durham and we are absolutely delighted that he will remain a major partof the team for the foreseeable future. Off the field we have a number of young players benefiting from his experience and guidance and that contribution cannot be underestimated.”

Key reappointed as Kent captain

Rob Key has been reappointed as Kent’s captain for 2010, after signing a new long-term contract

Cricinfo staff15-Oct-2009Rob Key has been reappointed as Kent’s captain for 2010, after signing a new long-term contract with the side that returned to the top flight of the County Championship after finishing the recent season as Division Two champions.Key made his first class debut for Kent in 1998 and has since scored more than 14,000 runs at an average of 42.33. He produced his career-best score of 270 not out against Glamorgan last summer and was also part of England’s ICC World Twenty20 squad. He had been linked with a move to Surrey, given their desire to return to the First Division after another disappointing season.”I’m very happy to commit my future to Kent,” said Key. “There have been lots of rumours about me leaving the club but at no stage have I spoken or have other clubs spoken to me. I am and always will be committed to trying to win trophies and bring success to Kent County Cricket Club.”Graham Johnson, Kent’s Chairman of Cricket, added: “Rob has made a tremendous contribution to the club, both as a player and captain. We see him, along with some other key players, as being the core of our side so I am very pleased that he has committed his long-term future to Kent.”He was open and honest throughout contract talks and brought a sense of fun to discussions. We look forward to him continuing to bring these characteristics to what he does, both on and off the field. The cricket committee was unanimous in wanting him to continue as captain in 2010.”

Carrick must axe Anthony Martial

Manchester United will be hoping to build on their positive result and improved performance against Villarreal last time out when they take on Chelsea in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Red Devils secured qualification to the last-16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday evening, providing them with a much-needed boost coming into this one.

But it’s set to be an extremely tricky test for United, with the hosts currently in imperious form and sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

In his first game in charge, Carrick made some bold selection calls as he looked to inject some life back into the 20-time English champions.

And although the retired midfielder clearly had his charges well organised, some of the personnel who he selected from the off arguably didn’t justify his faith in their ability to affect the play.

One of those players who failed to grasp their chance under Carrick was Anthony Martial.

Following a hugely underwhelming 2020/21 campaign, it was hoped that the France international would return to form this term, but a change in fortunes has yet to materialise.

Against Villarreal, Martial had just 42 touches before he was brought off on the 66-minute mark, failed to have a single shot, didn’t play a single key pass and lost possession eight times, highlighting his ineffective display.

It was just the latest disappointing showing from the 25-year-old in the opening weeks of the current campaign, though, with his dismal performance against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup back in September attracting much criticism.

“His (Martial’s) positioning was, to put it simply, was god awful,” said Mike Parrott of the Manchester Evening News.

“We all saw how absurd it was to see how slow he was when he is supposed to be in his absolute prime or if not even a bit earlier than his prime. He just looked really off the mark, and technically he just wasn’t there.”

Martial has bagged just one goal and provided no assists in his nine outings this season, and with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes waiting in the wings, Carrick must make the bold decision to axe the £250k-per-week liability for the trip to west London.

Bangalore Provident make it to semis

A round-up of the 13th day’s action at the KPL Cup

Cricinfo staff21-Sep-2009Bangalore Provident (Rural) cemented their place in the KPL Cup semi-finals with a ten-run win over Mysore Maharaajas. Mysore needed to win this game to entertain hopes to making it to the knockout stage, but a target of 156 proved beyond their reach. Bangalore Brigadiers (Urban), who lead the points table, take on Belagavi Panthers in the first semi-final tomorrow while Bangalore Provident battle with Bijapur Bulls in the second.Asked to bat, Bangalore Provident were dented early, the first wicket falling in the second over. But Thilak Naidu (43 in 42 balls) and Amit Verma (41) led the recovery with a 75-run stand, and Balachandra Akhil then blasted 41, including four sixes, in just 20 balls to help steer Bangalore Provident to a competitive score in a crunch game.Mysore Maharaajas were under pressure from the outset, for they had to chase down the target in under 16 overs to get their net run-rate to a level which would ensure their qualification into the final four. But they were in the hunt at 85 for 1 in the 10th over before left-arm spinner Sarfaraz Ashraf (4 for 16) and Akhil (2 for 27) combined to cause a collapse, where Mysore lost six wickets for 16 runs to be shut out of contention. A 27-run tenth-wicket stand gave Mysore a glimmer of hope of winning the game, if not progressing to the next stage, but a last-over run-out sealed their fate.Bangalore Brigadiers (Urban) continued their successful run in the KPL Cup, and rounded off their league phase with an emphatic eight-wicket win over Shamanoor Davangere Diamonds at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The game was effectively a dead rubber, for Davangere, now at the bottom of the points table, had failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Bangalore had already sealed a place in the final four, and are table-toppers with six wins in seven games.Bangalore’s performance today centered around a disciplined bowling display which helped restrict Davangere to 118 for 5. Mohanram Nidesh made 54, rescuing his team from 40 for 4 but his effort was in vain. David Mathias (2 for 12) and Narayanan Prasad (1 for 12 in four overs) ensured the scoring was kept in check and the target, well within reach.Robin Uthappa was the star with the bat, striking six fours and four sixes in his 32-ball 69, and was supported by opener Nishant Shekawat (28 in 26). Uthappa’s blazing innings meant Bangalore reached their target with close to seven overs to spare.

NZ's defensive approach helped us – Bayliss

The Sri Lanka coach has said that his team capitalised on New Zealand’s negative bowling to finish on top on the first day at the SSC

Trevor Bayliss: “His (Jayawardene’s) powers of concentration and his mental strength are exceptional”•AFP

Trevor Bayliss, the Sri Lanka coach, has said that his team capitalised on New Zealand’s negative bowling to finish on top on the first day at the SSC. On a slow-paced day, half-centuries by Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera took Sri Lanka to a strong 262 for 3. Daniel Vettori and Iain O’Brien were the only wicket-takers on a day when the tourists toiled hard on a flat pitch after losing the toss.”It would have been a bit difficult for us if we had to play a few more balls,” Bayliss said. “They looked like they didn’t want us to get away but on this track, which looked like it had a little bit of seam on it, maybe bowling around the off stump might have had us in a bit more trouble.”In a truncated first session, Sri Lanka scored 62 and lost a wicket; in the second they lost two and scored 83. In the final session, they scored 116 runs and lost no wickets, with Samaraweera and Jayawardene going strong.”The New Zealanders came out with a plan obviously not to let us get away probably the way we did in Galle,” Bayliss said. “We spoke about being patient and not chasing the wide balls. I thought we did that pretty well, especially Mahela [Jayawardene] and [Thilan] Samaraweera. They wore the opposition down to a certain degree and later on in the day, when they started to come and bowl a bit closer to the stumps, we were able to score a little bit quicker. It was a good day for us and we are in a good position.”Bayliss described the wicket as slow, with tennis-ball type bounce. “Earlier on we were thinking if we get to 300 we will be happy with it. The wicket became a little bit easier to bat on as the day wore on. We will be very happy with 350 if we can get to 400 we would be very pleased.”Bayliss was also full of praise for Jayawardene, who he says has played some exceptional knocks over the last two years in charge as coach. Jayawardene looked on course to another century in his favourite venue, batting on 79. He was watchful during his stint and focused on playing a long innings.”His powers of concentration and his mental strength are exceptional,” Bayliss said. “Some of the innings that he’s played, and under pressure, have been sensational. He showed it again today.”On Daniel Vettori’s achievement of reaching 300 Test wickets to add to his 3000 Test runs, Bayliss said: “It’s testament to not only his skill but his long period in the game, since he started at 18. He has a lot of good cricket ahead of him.”

Coaching England is a temptation – Arthur

South Africa coach Mickey Arthur has said he would welcome a stint with England before quitting international cricket. Arthur, 41, took up his current job in May 2005, replacing Ray Jennings, and his contract expires in April 2012.He was heavily linked with the England job before Andy Flower took over in April, and now says he was looking forward other challenges in England as well. “The England job is certainly something I would like to look at,” Arthur told . “I think Andy Flower will be there for a long time but England’s a temptation for my family and I to explore.””If not with the England team, then perhaps one of the counties because I used to follow country cricket extensively when I was growing up. There’s such history and culture in England with cricket and that really fascinates me.”South Africa, currently No. 1 in both Tests and ODIs, will be enjoying home support in the Champions Trophy, beginning September 22, before they host England for four Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20s during the winter. And Arthur believes England’s Ashes victory will set up an exciting series.”For Flower and Andrew Strauss to have won the Ashes in their first series as a combination is unbelievable and will give them great confidence,” he said. “I actually thought Australia would win 2-1 because they had so much quality in the batting department but England played well and were full value for their triumph.””We respect England highly and realise it’s going to be a tip-top series where we must maintain our standards throughout if we are to be successful.”Arthur said the focus would be on clinging to the top spots. “It’s something we wanted to do and set out to achieve – and to have got there is obviously very rewarding,” he added. “We realise now that the easy part was getting there, so our next challenge is maintaining our consistency over the last two years so that we can stay there for a long time.”We have a really good one-day side with probably the best fielding unit in world cricket. I don’t think this side has reached its full potential yet, which is very exciting. We’re just starting to tap into the potential so the next couple of years are going to be very bright and rewarding – but we must work hard and do things right.”

Crystal Palace linked to Reyes Cleary

Crystal Palace have been linked with a transfer move for West Bromwich Albion striker Reyes Cleary as the January transfer window fast approaches.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, the Eagles are one of a number of sides interested in securing the highly-rated 17-year-old’s services, with several Premier League and Bundesliga clubs listed amongst his potential suitors.

The report states that: “Cleary has been compared in style to a young Romelu Lukaku. He is quick, strong and has a goalscorer’s instinct and, as Sportsmail reported, has already been drawing interest from Crystal Palace, Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim.”

German giants Bayern Munich and the newest members of football’s financial elite Newcastle United are also believed to be tracking Cleary ahead of a potential offer, meaning Palace chairman Steve Parish may have to move quickly in order to secure his target.

He’s just what Patrick Vieira needs

Cleary has been in sensational form in the opening weeks of the current campaign, finding the back of the net on 14 occasions in just 12 appearances after bagging another brace against Leicester City last weekend.

It’s believed that Munich sent a contingency to watch the stocky striker in action against Stoke City Under-23s last month and are planning on further scouting missions as interest in him continues to grow.

But with Cleary yet to sign a professional contract, an imminent Hawthorns exit could be on the cards, and the youngster may be just what Patrick Vieira needs at Palace.

The French tactician has made a successful start to his squad rebuild in south London, bringing in Odsonne Edouard from Celtic in order to bolster his forward line.

However, with both Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew approaching the twilight years of their careers and Jean-Philippe Mateta failing to impress, Vieira is expected to delve back into the transfer market for further attacking reinforcements.

As a result, Cleary could be the ideal addition for the capital club. The teenage prodigy has been compared to Lukaku, would arrive for a relatively small fee, and has plenty of room to grow while Edouard continues to lead the line.

It remains to be seen whether Parish can convince the Englishman to join Vieira’s revolution at Palace, but it’s a deal that would signal the Eagles’ intentions in the years ahead.
