Na noite desta quinta-feira, o time do Bahia deu um importante passo na Copa do Nordeste, vencendo o Botafogo-PB por 2 a 0 na última rodada da fase de grupos. Com o resultado, o Esquadrão de Açoterminou a primeira fase na liderança do Grupo C, com 12 pontos conquistados.

Um dos principais jogadores do Bahia, o meia Zé Rafael destacou a importância da vitória, jogando fora de casa, para a sequência do torneio:

-Sabíamos que seria um jogo difícil, pois era um confronto direto pela primeira colocação do grupo e por ser na casa do adversário. Graças a Deus entramos concentrados, confiantes em fazer uma grande partida, e conseguimos sair com o resultado positivo, que nos garantiu na próxima fase da competição como líderes da nossa chave.

Neste domingo, o Bahia volta a entrar em campo, desta vez para fazer o primeiro jogo da decisão do Baiano, contra o maior rival Vitória.Zé Rafael falou sobre o duelo e pediu paz no clássico, para que se evite cenas como as do último Ba-Vi.

-Agora temos um grande desafio no domingo, contra o nosso maior rival, dentro do nosso estádio, com o apoio da nossa torcida. Temos que usar esses fatores para buscar o triunfo e sair na frente nessa decisão. Além disso, temos que pedir que seja um jogo disputado na bola, sem que haja cenas como as que vimos no último jogo entre as duas equipes, pois aquilo não é o futebol que o público quer assistir, não é o exemplo que pretendemos passar para quem vê de fora. Sabemos da nossa responsabilidade como atletas, e, por isso, espero que seja um confronto da paz, tanto na Fonte Nova quanto no Barradão, para que seja um grande espetáculo.

They pride themselves on their fielding, and tonight they dropped two catches they would normally take nine times out of 10. Zaheer Khan got reprieved on nought, Harbhajan Singh on 12, and the duo carried India home. Something similar happened when they were batting: after recovering well from an average start, they slumped from 198 for 4 in 44.4 overs to 220 all out.Graeme Smith chose to focus on that period – during the end of an innings – that has hurt them the most in this series. “I think 220 gave us a chance. The wicket was very difficult to bat on, had sort of plates on it, and its two-paced nature made strokes very difficult. It also had up and down bounce,” he said. “[But] we were really hoping for 240. I think 240 would have been a really good total there. JP [Duminy] and [debutant] Faff du Plessis played well together to take us to a decent total [rescuing them from 90 for 4]. Our Powerplay was poor again, we lost JP and Faff within two overs, and we only got 19 overs in our last six overs.”I really felt if we got 240 we were in with a real good chance of winning the game. We came real close, we missed two crucial chances at the back end, but I can’t fault the guys’ commitment tonight, their intensity and the effort they gave.”The commitment was of course there, in the way Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn bowled, in the way they caught, Steyn off his own bowling and Morkel at third man. Just got to keep training hard and keep doing the right things and hopefully the things will kick into place.”The World Cup squad comes out tonight, that will ease a lot of minds and stress on players. Hopefully free up a lot of players, and make them play with sort of freedom in the next few games.”They will need all the freedom because the opposition – an under-strength one at that – is sensing they are under pressure. “Our team is full of confidence right now,” Yusuf Pathan, Man of the Match tonight, said. “South Africa will obviously be under pressure because they have lost two matches, and we have done better in pressure situation. We made a comeback in the previous game, and here too. So the pressure will be there.”

Alastair Cook shrugged off a testing start to the tour with a century while Andrew Strauss displayed more attacking intent as England completed a strong warm-up against South Australia. The hundreds for the openers capped an encouraging three days for the tourists, even though rain limited the bowlers’ work on the final afternoon and the contest finished in a draw.Cook’s unbeaten 111 followed Strauss’s blazing 102 off 121 balls as they shared a 181-run opening stand that put them in touch ahead of the first Ashes Test on November 25. Strauss declared shortly before lunch at 1 for 240, setting the hosts 380 for a victory which became even more improbable when rain washed out the second session.James Anderson showed more spark with 2 for 23, removing James Smith to an edge to third slip and seeing Jonathan Trott dive to catch Michael Klinger’s pull. Callum Ferguson was on 11 and Daniel Harris on 18 when bad light ended the game.The only problem with the fine display of the England openers on the second and third days was it prevented Kevin Pietersen from having a bat. Still, there is nothing better for a touring team than having their captain in excellent touch, and Strauss quickly picked up where he left off on Friday.England re-started from 0 for 94 and Strauss skipped towards his century, his second of the trip. After accelerating with three fours off a Peter George over, Strauss brought up his hundred by launching the spinner Aaron O’Brien to long-on. Three balls later he tried for another big shot off O’Brien and was bowled, departing with 13 fours and four sixes.Cook, who started the trip with scores of 5, 9 and 32, was more patient and eased his way towards his milestone, although he showed flashes off aggression. His collection of 18 fours included three in a row off Tim Lang to go to 92. He also lifted O’Brien for six to midwicket during his 162-ball stay.Jonathan Trott was unbeaten on 20 while Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Ian Bell were unused. It’s a minor issue after such a handy all-round performance.

Aston Villa are expected to make a ‘serious offer’ for Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.

The Lowdown: Nelsson profiled

Nelsson, a Denmark international, is 23 years of age and is primarily a centre-back who can also play in midfield.

He made a £6.3m move to Galatasaray from FC Copenhagen last summer and has turned out 41 times in Turkey since.

Nelsson, described as a ‘Danish lion’, has a €25m (£21m) release clause in his Galatasaray deal, and it looks as if he has caught the eye of fellow countryman Johan Lange.

The Latest: Villa interest

Reports from Turkey on Wednesday looked at six Galatasaray players who have been catching the eye across Europe.

One of those was Nelsson, with Aston Villa the only side name-checked with an interest, reportedly ready to make a ‘serious offer’ in the summer.

The Verdict: Needed?

Steven Gerrard has just four senior centre-backs on the books, two of which are Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa, with reports casting doubt over their Villa Park futures.

Therefore, a number of defensive reinforcements may well be required ahead of Gerrard’s first full season in charge, with Nelsson possibly one of those.

Nelsson is at the top of his game with a career-high £9m Transfermarkt valuation, and you’d like to think he still has room for improvement, potentially at Bodymoor Heath.

What’s the story?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against the league leaders, Marsch revealed: “Crysencio Summerville picked up an injury in the last training we had before the Palace match which is really unfortunate because he’s been in really good form.

Marsch will be gutted

While Summerville may have just seven minutes of Premier League action to his name since the turn of the year, he has been a shining light for the club’s under-23s, netting a fine hat-trick against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

After watching him make his senior debut at St James’ Park against Newcastle earlier this season, Whites under-23 boss Mark Jackson said: “Proud to see any player step up and make a debut. I was watching the game, Cry’s worked extremely hard.

“He’s been one of them players, like I said with Amari (Miller), the new players, it takes time to gel but I spoke to him yesterday at the training ground. I said ‘that’s your little taste of it, now the hardest part is trying to establish yourself in the team for any player.”

Hailed as a “bag of tricks” by Chris Powell, his former coach when Summerville was a teenager at Dutch side ADO Den Haag, the 20-year-old was in excellent form for Leeds’ youth teams last season, netting an impressive six goals and providing a further six assists in just 12 Premier League 2 games.

Given that Leeds are still contending with injuries at the top end of the pitch to the likes of Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts, having another attacking option in their ranks like Summerville would have been a welcome boost for Marsch.

While relegation is still certainly on the cards, Leeds look unlikely to go down that given Everton and Burnley remain below them and with a point buffer between them.

Summerville could well have been given further opportunities to shine in the first-team had he not gone down with injury, and it’s exactly why Marsch may be gutted at not being able to get a deeper first-hand look at the youngster.

Leeds United have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Eddie Nketiah back to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that, despite the centre-forward revealing that he is in discussions with Arsenal regarding a new contract, the 22-year-old will wait until the end of the season – when his current deal at The Emirates expires – before making a decision on his future.

This is likely to come as a huge boost to Victor Orta and Leeds United, who have once again been rumoured to be interested in the signing of the former England U21 international this summer.

“Extraordinary at his age”

Considering the fact that Leeds were linked with a £20m move for Nketiah as recently as last summer, the news that the Whites could land the striker for free at the end of the current campaign is sure to have left Orta buzzing.

While it is true that the £9m-rated forward has not had much chance to impress under the management of Mikel Arteta this season – making 21 appearances in all competitions, only seven of which have come as starts – the 22-year-old has nevertheless proven that when given the opportunity he is more than capable of finding the back of the net.

Indeed, over his five Carabao Cup fixtures this term, the £45k-per-week hitman bagged an extremely impressive five goals – including one in a 2-0 victory over Leeds – on the Gunners’ way to the semi-final of the competition, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Liverpool.

Furthermore, the player who Noel Whelan dubbed a “dangerous” talent and Arteta claimed is “extraordinary at his age” also impressed during a loan spell at Elland Road back in 2019, scoring five goals and registering one assist over his 19 appearances for the Whites – averaging a direct goal involvement every 106 minutes of football played.

As such, considering his undoubted goalscoring ability and potential for development in the future, Nketiah’s signing would certainly appear to be a huge coup for Jesse Marsch’s side – particularly with it looking as if Orta could land the 22-year-old for nothing.

The Big PictureSouth Africa have an opportunity to wrap up the five-match series in the fourth match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, but to make sure that happens, they will have to improve on an area that they are traditionally world class in: fielding. Daryll Cullinan, the former South Africa batsman, labelled the current team “the worst fielding side since readmission”, and while the situation may not be quite that dire, the number of dropped catches and missed run-out chances in Tuesday’s match suggested there is still some work to be done.The bowling has also been a concern for South Africa, and although they successfully defended 228 in the third ODI, Pakistan came within two runs of a thrilling win. The bowlers leaked 56 runs during the batting Powerplay in that match and have to find a way of plugging the gap soon.The likely return of Dale Steyn should help in that regard, but Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s withdrawal due to a back spasm is unfortunate. Tsotsobe had done a great deal to further his claims for a full-time spot as South Africa’s limited-overs new-ball bowler on this tour, picking up six wickets in the first three games at a parsimonious 3.13 runs to the over. His canny changes of pace and unhittable lengths played a major role in South Africa’s triumph on Tuesday, and he will surely be missed.Pakistan have already pulled off one magnificent series leveller, in the second match, and will have to aim for a repeat performance. Their bowling, Mohammed Hafeez in particular, has kept the pressure on the South Africans and Akhtar also showed how vicious he can still be, even on a slow, low Dubai wicket, in Tuesday’s match.It’s the batting that has really let Pakistan down. Abdul Razzaq’s magnificent century bailed them out in the second ODI and Fawad Alam’s gutsy, unbeaten 59 almost did the trick on Tuesday, but without a strong performance from the top six, Pakistan are always at risk of being found wanting.Form guide(most recent first)

Pakistan: LWLLWWatch out for…Such is the nature of the role of ‘finisher’ in the one-day game, a particularly acute focus is brought to bear on the successes or failures of any player designated with that position. Fawad Alam’s place in Pakistan’s middle order has been open to such scrutiny since his inauspicious debut on one of their previous visits to Abu Dhabi, but he appears to be settling into the role and registered his fourth ODI fifty in the third match. With another close finish a distinct possibility, his contribution at the death could prove the difference.Wayne Parnell wasn’t quite at his best on his return from injury against Zimbabwe in October, but appeared increasingly confident with each outing and his enviable limited-overs record suggests he’ll have a leading role to play – particularly, as a left-armer, in Tsotsobe’s absence. Pitch and conditionsThe wicket generally played true, although slightly slow and low, on Tuesday and there’s no reason for conditions to be any different on Friday with the same strip being used for all three games. With the wear and tear from the last match, there should be a little life in the pitch to keep both the seamers and spinners interested. Hot, sunny conditions should prevail in the afternoon with a warm, dry evening to follow.Stats and trivia South Africa’s 228 for 9 in the last game is the highest ever total at the Dubai International Stadium, although it was also just the third ODI to be played at the venue. It has hosted 12 Twenty20 internationals, many of which have also been low-scoring affairs with Pakistan’s 161 for 8 against New Zealand last year the highest score in that format.
Hashim Amla has scored eight international hundreds, three in Tests and five in ODIs, this year, with 1782 runs at 81.00 in 20 matches. His 119 in the last match took him straight to the top of the list of leading run-scorers at the Dubai International cricket stadium.
