Sylhet qualify with win over Dhaka

National Cricket League round up.

Mohammad Isam08-Dec-2011Sylhet confirmed their place in the second phase of the National Cricket League with an eight-wicket win over Dhaka in the last round of the first phase at Fatullah. The campaign of hapless Dhaka ended with their sixth loss in seven games and this game was over as a contest when their top-order fell in the first hour for 24 runs. The Sylhet pacemen led by Robiul Islam ran riot, taking four wickets while Tapash Baisya picked up three. After some resistance from the Dhaka lower-order, Nabil Samad and Enamul Haque Jnr finished up the job to bowl them out for 175.Sylhet replied as they are used to, slowly. They played out 117.1 overs to take a 110-run first innings lead with Ezaz Ahmed and Enamul providing the impetus at the end of the innings.Dhaka had another poor outing in the second innings. Opener Abdul Mazid hammered 92 but it was never enough as they were bowled out for 231 to leave Sylhet 122 to win. They took only the first session on the final day to pick up their fourth win in the competition.Chittagong didn’t have Sylhet’s luck of a lowly opponent in their crunch game for qualification. They played a peculiar game in Bogra which they eventually lost by a crushing 241 runs to Rangpur. Both teams were bowled out in the first day. Rangpur for 122 and Chittagong for 118 before Rangpur hit back ferociously. Dhiman Ghosh (183) and Alauddin Babu (180) notched up a 322-run fifth wicket partnership as Rangpur amassed 587. Dhiman’s form has been impressive for two seasons now while Alauddin is one of the very few seaming all-rounders in Bangladesh who is impressing in every game.Chittagong never matched up to the chase or played out for the draw. Nafees Iqbal struck his second century but it was adieu for a team that has once again flattered to deceive.Khulna rounded off the first phase with their fifth win, beating Dhaka Metropolis by 175 runs at Rajshahi to become one of three teams to win five games in this phase.Mithun Ali’s first innings 101 set up Khulna well but the rest crumbled to Arafat Sunny’s 7 for 49 as they were bowled out for 256. But Dhaka Metro made a meal of their first innings, getting to 164 for 8 before Mohammad Ashraful declared as Khulna had bonus points around the corner. The negative move and Khulna’s 250 in the second innings was enough to set Dhaka Metro a 343-run target and that too without Ashraful. The skipper had been called up for national duty and was replaced by Arman Hossain. It mattered very little as Khulna bowled out Dhaka Metro for 167 with Mehrab Hossain Jnr retired absent due to a hand injury.Rajshahi completed a 175-run win over Barisal in three days in Jessore. After an almost-even first innings, Rajshahi were powered by half-centuries from Mizanur Rahman, Junaid Siddique and Mukhtar Ali in the second innings and set Barisal 320 to win.Sohag Gazi’s whirlwind 63 apart, none of the batsmen dominated and the innings was over in just 31.4 overs with Barisal bowled out for 144. Sohag had a tremendous game, taking 9 for 188 and hammering two half-centuries.

Faisalabad fold for 217

A round-up of the action from the first day of the second round of Division One matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2011Faisalabad continued their poor start to this season’s competition by being bowled out for 217 on the first day against Water and Power Development Authority in Sargodha. Fast bowlers Imran Khan and Kashif Raza shared the first six wickets to fall, reducing Faisalabad to 106 for 6. Veteran Naved Latif, who missed the opening game of the campaign, was the only batsman to cross 30, remaining unbeaten on a brisk 59. Faisalabad did fight back, though, through their bowlers. Abdul Rauf, who has only bowled once before in his ten-match first-class career, was given the new ball and he struck twice early, as WAPDA finished the day on 33 for 3.Abbottabad were headed towards a middling total against Habib Bank Limited despite a century from their captain Rameez Ahmed and a 91 from Nadeem Akhtar at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. With five of the top eight making single-digit figures, the wickets tumbled either side of a 172-run stand between Ahmed and Akhtar. The pair rescued Abbottabad from a troublesome 48 for 4, but the dismissal of Akhtar set off a phase where four wickets went down for 28 runs. Ahmed was still unbeaten on 105 as Abbottabad reached 252 for 8 by stumps. Fast bowler Sarmad Anwar was the most effective of the HBL bowlers, finishing with four scalps.A batting failure meant Islamabad mustered only 198 against National Bank of Pakistan at the Diamond Club Ground. Four of the Islamabad batsmen made it to 30 but none of them could push on to a half-century, and the longest innings came from the opener Umair Khan who battled for 105 minutes to make only 13. Islamabad seemed headed for an even smaller total when they slumped to 117 for 6 but a 63-run eighth-wicket stand between Naeem Anjum and Imad Wasim lifted them. Kamran Akmal, who hasn’t played for Pakistan since the World Cup, took five catches in the innings. NBP had batting trouble of their own, losing three early wickets to end at 25 for 3.Opener Shahzaib Hasan’s century and left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Khalil’s strikes meant Karachi Blues and Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited shared the opening day honours at the National Stadium. Shahzaib made more than half of Karachi’s runs, shepherding the side to 251 for 5 despite a lack of support from the rest of the top order. Despite Shahzaib’s solidity, Karachi found themselves at a troublesome 79 for 4 as Khalil sliced through the batting. Wicketkeeper Javed Mansoor then provided the back-up Shahzaib needed, the pair adding 166 for the fifth wicket before Shahzaib was dismissed for 144.Seventies from Rameez Aziz and Gulraiz Sadaf helped State Bank of Pakistan recover from a top-order failure to reach 249 for 7 against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium. Mohammad Abbas took three wickets early to push SBP to a spot of bother. From 93 for 5, Aziz and Sadaf dragged SBP to some respectability with a 152-run stand, before a double-strike from fast bowler Prince Abbas meant Sialkot edged the day. Prince and Mohammad Abbas ended with three wickets apiece. There was another top-order failure at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium where Pakistan International Airlines lost four cheap wickets before recovering to end the day at 259 for 4 against Rawalpindi. A century from Fahad Iqbal and an unbeaten 70 from the experienced Shoaib Khan lifted PIA from 69 for 4. It was Iqbal’s fifth first-class century, an innings in which he hit 13 fours and a six. Shoaib came to the crease at nearly the same time as Iqbal but he was far more circumspect, striking at below 40, but played an important role in stabilising the innings.

It's a cut-throat business – Bopara

Ravi Bopara is not taking things for granted after recent success

After a couple of important innings for England during their home ODI series against India, Ravi Bopara started the tour of India with a score of 73 against Hyderabad, which was crucial to the England XI winning the game. However, Bopara, who has been in and out of the England side during his career, is not taking anything for granted.”It’s a cut-throat business,” he said. “You’ve just got to keep playing well whenever things are in your favour, and make sure you nail it.”England dominated India at home, winning the Test series 4-0 and the five-match ODI series 3-0, but the challenge for them will be to adapt to conditions in the subcontinent, where they struggled during the World Cup. Bopara said singles would be important since sometimes it was difficult to go through with your shots on Indian pitches.”You’ve always got to look for boundaries; you’ve got to keep hitting the ball very hard. But it is a lot more difficult in India because you do know that if the pitch is not playing quite right you can’t go through with all your shots. There is the worry of chipping it to the infield.”You’ve got to have that in mind. You don’t then hit the ball quite as hard or freely as you would like to. On those sorts of pitches, the singles do become very important – you don’t want to be tied up with too many dot balls and put yourself under pressure, and have to look for a big shot on a pitch that is not quite suited to the batters.”England’s batsmen had a tough time of it against Hyderabad, losing four wickets in the first 15 overs before Bopara and Chris Woakes took them to a score of 219. “It was a little bit of a difficult pitch, especially up front,” Bopara said. “With the new ball, it was quite tough. But once the ball got older, it got better.”It was hard to get the ball away, and quite a soft outfield. It was one of those where we thought we should be scoring a lot quicker, but in reality I thought 240 would have been a good score, and as it proved 220 was a good score.”Bopara recently put in a surprising performance with the ball, taking 4 for 10 to help England beat West Indies in a Twenty20 international at The Oval. He said he expected his bowling to be called upon against India as well.”I think it’s important for me to get my bowling right on this tour. At some stage my bowling is going to be called upon and I’m going to have to do a good job because, as we know, this Indian side have a very, very good batting line-up; they are playing in their own conditions too.” He said he hoped to kick on from the positive start to the tour.Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter is set to join England at practice for the first time on October 10, after Somerset were eliminated from the Champions League T20 at the semi-final stage. Kisewetter suffered a bruised arm during the semi-final against Mumbai Indians, when he was struck by a smash down the ground from his batting partner Jos Buttler. England will assess the injury as soon as possible.

Sassá fará companhia a Fred no departamento médico. O camisa 9 está mostrando evolução e a expectativa do clube mineiro é de que ele volte a atuar no mês de setembro.

Time to infuse new talent, say former India cricketers

Former India players react to their team’s 4-0 loss to England in the Test series

India’s drubbing in the just-concluded Test series in England has signalled the urgent need for youngsters to be blooded into the Test team, according to former India captain Anil Kumble. Kumble said that while it could take time for India to return to their best, players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh needed to be given an extended run to allow the rebuilding process to take place.”They have to be given a long rope,” Kumble told . “You may not see India come back to the top in quick time. But we have to ensure that with these youngsters, we remain in the top three and climb to the top spot after a few years.”Arun Lal, the former India batsman, echoed Kumble’s view. “You cannot go on with 35 or 38-year-olds till eternity,” Lal said. “We need to infuse new talent. What happened in England was in a way good. We needed an awakening.”India’s 4-0 loss is the their first whitewash since the three-match series in Australia in 1999-2000, and the first by a four-game margin since the 1967-68 tour of Australia. Since Sourav Ganguly took over the captaincy in 2000, India’s overseas record has shown marked improvement – India have won 24 away Tests in the last 11 years as compared to only four between 1980-99.However, the players responsible for several of these wins have already gone – Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly – or are close to retirement, while the likes of Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh, who were part of these wins, have been dogged by injuries recently.Kapil Dev, another former captain, said several of these players would be hard to replace, making India’s task that much harder. “We were fortunate to have such good players all at one time, but they can’t go on forever,” Dev said. “It won’t be easy to replace them.”Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said, during commentary, that while England were the better side, he had not expected India to cave in so meekly. “Losing is part of the game but for a top-ranked side to lose so badly is inexcusable,” he said. “England were magnificent, they were much superior to India and much better prepared. But I did expect India to show more fight than they did in the four Tests.”With the Don Argus-led review of Australian cricket getting a lot of attention over the last week, there has been speculation over whether the BCCI will commission a similar appraisal in the aftermath of the England series. Former captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi said he didn’t anticipate too many changes coming into place. “The BCCI is not going to show a great deal of vision,” Pataudi said. “Cricket will continue [in India] the way it is, but I sincerely hope that some sense does come in.”Ravi Shastri, another former captain, said it was time to look at different players for the different formats, with an emphasis on Test cricket. “It’s time for Indian cricket to identify players who are specifically suited to the different formats of the game,” Shastri wrote in the . “A way has to be found to encourage those cricketers who want to give Test cricket priority. There ought to be superior remuneration or compensation.”

India's stand pulled the plug on league – SLC

Sri Lanka Cricket has admitted that India’s decision to withdraw its players from the Sri Lanka Premier League effectively pulled the plug on the tournament

India’s boycott has forced SLC to revive the inter-provincial domestic tournament for this year, featuring only Sri Lankan players•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Sri Lanka Cricket has admitted that India’s decision to withdraw its players from the Sri Lanka Premier League effectively pulled the plug on the tournament.”Honestly, we are finding it difficult to have the Premier League without India’s support,” SLC spokesman Brian Thomas told . “We can’t get into more debt.”Thomas’ confirmation came after two South African players linked to the tournament – Herschelle Gibbs and Davy Jacobs – told ESPNcricinfo that they had been informed of the one-year deferral. On Friday, the agent for Lonwabo Tsotosbe said he’d received similar information from Somerset Entertainment Ventures, the league’s organisers.India’s boycott deprived the tournament of a broadcaster for the lucrative Indian market, making it unviable at a time when SLC is going through financial instability. Adding to the sense of confusion was last week’s dissolution of the SLC committee that had created the tournament, and its replacement by a new panel.Consequently, the tournament’s inaugural edition has been pushed to August 2012, following a meeting between the new committee and Somerset. In its place, SLC will conduct the regular inter-provincial Twenty20 tournament featuring five domestic sides without involving foreign players, with the winner becoming eligible for the Champions League in September.Meanwhile the SLC will continue to lobby for Indian participation in next year’s event. Thomas said the country’s cricket authorities were hopeful of reaching an agreement with India on the issue. The SLPL ran into trouble when BCCI withheld its permission on the grounds that Somerset, which owned the commercial rights, would be handling the contracts for international players and that could lead to complications should disputes arise over payments. The SLC was willing to back the Indian players’ contracts so that their financial interests were protected, but that was not enough to satisfy the BCCI. There have been suggestions that former IPL chairman Lalit Modi had a hand in the event, but SLC and Somerset repeatedly denied the allegation, as did Modi. The Indian board’s stand – which marked a U-turn of sorts after an initial green signal – was contrary to that of the boards of Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan, all of whom extended their support to the tournament. Tim May, the chief executive of Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), had also backed the event.
