Quiney sees his window narrowing

A week after he made what the coach Mickey Arthur joked was the best 9 he had ever seen, Rob Quiney knows that another low score in the Adelaide Test will be no laughing matter

A week after he made what the coach Mickey Arthur joked was the best 9 he had ever seen, Rob Quiney knows that another low score in the Adelaide Test will be no laughing matter. Quiney kept his place in Australia’s squad for the second Test against South Africa, which begins on Thursday, and his chances of playing appear strong, with Shane Watson facing a difficult challenge to prove his fitness in time.On debut at the Gabba, Quiney got off the mark in Test cricket by pulling Dale Steyn through midwicket from his first ball and he appeared confident throughout his short stay. After the game, Arthur said light-heartedly that Quiney’s innings was the best 9 he had ever seen, and he added that Quiney had offered much in the dressing room and did not look out of depth at Test level.Should he play in Adelaide, Quiney knows that he must show the kind of skill that brought him to Test level if he is to stay ahead of others such as Usman Khawaja in the national queue. The list of Australia’s Test cricketers abounds with men who were only given one chance in the baggy green – including his Victoria team-mates Chris Rogers, Clint McKay and Bryce McGain – and Quiney is well aware that two lean matches could spell the end of his Test dreams.”I’d rather make a scratchy fifty than a good nine,” Quiney told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday. “I see this little window as being little. If I can get a score on the board and show that I can get runs at that level, it’s going to help me out in the future. If I don’t, the depth of the batting is getting better and better and people are scoring runs at Shield level and one-day level and they’re doing a job. It’s good healthy competition in the Australian setup.”Not that Quiney failed to contribute to Australia’s strong showing at the Gabba. He took three catches, including two very sharp takes at gully, and bowled 11 overs of medium pace that conceded only 13 runs. Remarkably, he has the best economy rate of any player who has bowled at least ten overs for Australia in Test cricket, but Quiney knows that only runs off his own bat will determine whether he remains a Test cricketer.”With the bat I was a little bit disappointed,” he said. “My job is to make runs and I didn’t make runs … it can turn around pretty quickly. I’ve only had one innings in Test match cricket. If I get another couple of innings, hopefully I can turn that around and score some runs for the side and help out to contribute to a win.”For the time being, all Quiney can do is wait and see whether he will be given another opportunity in Adelaide, or if he is squeezed out to accommodate the return of Watson, Australia’s vice-captain. Watson, who missed the first Test due to a calf injury, was named in a 13-man squad on Friday but he will only be considered if he is able contribute with the ball.”It’s a good limbo,” Quiney said. “I’d rather be in this limbo than not being in the mix at all. If Shane gets fit, it’s going to be beneficial for the team … but if he doesn’t get up and he’s still unfit, I feel like the last Test was a bit of a dream and I’ve got a job to do now. If I do get the chance I’ve just got to knuckle down and get some runs.”

Broad suffers recurrence of heel injury

Fast bowler Stuart Broad has been sent for scan on his left heel and is a doubt for England’s two T20 matches against India.Broad suffered a recurrence of the heel injury that threatened his involvement in the first Test of the series during training at the VCA Stadium on Tuesday, ahead of the fourth and final Test of the series that starts on Thursday. While Broad is unlikely to win a recall to the side for that game, he remains a key player in England’s T20 side. His absence would also necessitate England naming a new captain for the two games. Eoin Morgan would appear to be the likely replacement. It may be an inexperienced looking England squad assembled for the T20 games. Not only have experienced players such as Graeme Swann and Kevin Pietersen been rested, but senior coaches Andy Flower, Graham Gooch and the team manager Phil Neale are also going home immediately after the Test. Richard Halsall, the assistant coach, will take charge. The training session also afforded England their first look at the Nagpur pitch. While it has not been used recently, unlike the tracks used in Mumbai and Kolkata, it looks white and dry. The curator has been asked by the BCCI not to talk to the media, but those close to him suggest the groundstaff stopped watering the pitch a couple of days ago and expect it to start assisting spinners on the second day. The outfield, however, is lush and green which may not aid the seamers on either side as they search for reverse swing. There have only been three Tests at this ground and none of them have ended in a draw. On all three occasions, the side winning the toss has batted first – as they surely will again – and on two of those occasions they have gone on to win the game.

Mukund to lead India A in New Zealand

Tamil Nadu opener Abhinav Mukund, who averaged 7.66 on India A’s tour of the West Indies, has been selected to captain the 16-member India A squad for their tour of New Zealand in September and October. Robin Bist, who got one innings on that West Indies tour, Parvinder Awana, who got one match, and Wriddhiman Saha, easily the second-best choice as wicketkeeper in the country, all suddenly find themselves out of reckoning.Cheteshwar Pujara, Ashok Dinda, Ajinkya Rahane, Manoj Tiwary and Rohit Sharma have been picked for either Tests or the World Twenty20, and are hence unavailable. Apart from Abhinav, spinners Akshay Darekar, Jalaj Saxena, Rahul Sharma, and quicks Shami Ahmed and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the only survivors from what was an average West Indies tour.India’s Under-19 captain, Unmukt Chand, who has been impressive with his batting in some crunch situations in U-19 games, was duly rewarded with a place on the tour. Rajasthan’s Ashok Menaria, who scored 462 runs at 77 in last year’s Ranji Trophy, was rewarded with a place in the side, but he will miss team-mate Bist, who was the leading run-getter in the tournament. Naman Ojha, who averaged 61 in Ranji Trophy, replaced Saha as the wicketkeeper. Ambati Rayudu finally finds himself in a representative side after his return from the ICL. Vinay Kumar found himself demoted one level, and will be the leader of this attack. Praveen Kumar continued to be out of favour even for the A tour.Punjab’s Mandeep Singh, Bengal’s Anustup Majumdar and Mumbai’s Suryakumar Yadav took the remaining batting slots. Seamers Rituraj Singh of Rajasthan and Jaydev Unadkat of Saurashtra were left-field picks. Rituraj has played just five first-class games, but averages 18 for his 27 wickets. Unadkat had failed to impress on his Test debut, and got 26 wickets in Ranji Trophy at an average of 27.India A squad: Abhinav Mukund (capt.), Naman Ojha (wk), Mandeep Singh, Anustup Majumdar, Unmukt Chand, Ashok Menaria, Ambati Rayudu, Suryakumar Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Akshay Darekar, Vinay Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Jalaj Saxena, Rahul Sharma, Rituraj Singh and Jaydev Unadkat

Player strike 'a last resort' – Paul Marsh

Australia’s players have not ruled out industrial action if they cannot reach agreement with Cricket Australia over a new pay deal by the June 30 deadline

Brydon Coverdale04-Jun-2012

Paul Marsh believes there is still time for a deal to be reached between Cricket Australia and the players•Australian Cricketers’ Association

Australia’s players have not ruled out industrial action if they cannot reach agreement with Cricket Australia over a new pay deal by the June 30 deadline. However, the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) chief executive Paul Marsh said the player union would prefer to roll the existing pay agreement forward if a deal is not finalised by the end of the month, instead of resorting to a player strike.Talks between the ACA and Cricket Australia have so far failed to resolve the issue of the players’ share of cricket revenue, which looms as the major stumbling block to a new memorandum of understanding (MoU). A new MoU was due last year but instead the existing arrangement was extended for another year as the parties could not agree on some matters, and discussions have been no smoother this year.At the weekend, reports emerged of the possibility that the players might even boycott the upcoming one-day tour of England or the ICC World Twenty20 if a deal was not reached. However, Marsh said that while the ACA was preparing for all eventualities, it was still hopeful of a resolution with Cricket Australia and failing that, a potential extension of the existing MoU.”That sort of stuff [a strike] is always an absolute last resort,” Marsh said on ABC Radio on Monday. “I think our preferred method here, and I don’t know what Cricket Australia’s position is, but our preferred strategy would be to keep rolling the current deal until we can reach an agreement. Nobody wants a situation where the players aren’t playing. But I guess it takes two to tango.”Where the story has come from over the weekend, the question was put to us are you preparing for a boycott or strike action… we’re preparing for everything. We’re not going to get to the 30th of June and say we haven’t got a deal, what do we do now? Our job is to make sure when that time comes, hopefully we have got a deal, that’s our absolute priority, but if we haven’t then we’ve got to be able to talk different options. Obviously we’ll take those options back to the collective player group and we’ll make a decision from there.”One issue that has held up discussions has been the move to a performance-based player payment model, although Marsh said the two parties had almost reached agreement. But the major point of contention is the make-up of the cricket revenue pool, which includes revenue streams such as media rights, sponsorships and gate takings, from which Australia’s players receive a 26% cut.”Cricket Australia pretty late in the piece have come to us and tried to take a couple of revenue streams out of that definition as well as turning one from what currently now a gross revenue definition into a net revenue definition,” Marsh said. “The amount of money at stake is pretty significant and I think for very reasonable reasons we’re not agreeing to that. At the moment it’s a little bit of a stalemate on that particular issue.”If you have a look at what players from a lot of the overseas type sports get it’s up over 50%. So we’re pretty reasonable in terms of what we’re asking for. If Cricket Australia want to start to unbundle all the revenue streams and say we don’t want you to have this one now … then we quite rightly should turn around and say we want more of the high-margin revenue streams.”The prolonged nature of the negotiations is affecting the ability of the state and Big Bash League teams to finalise their playing lists, for deals cannot be confirmed until the MoU is completed. That means a longer period of uncertainty for men such as Usman Khawaja, who has been linked with a move from New South Wales to Queensland but cannot yet sign a contract.Marsh conceded the state organisations were “screaming out” for a resolution and that the talks could be an unwelcome distraction from the business of preparing players for first-class and international cricket. However, he said he remained confident that an agreement could be reached before the end of the month.”The only thing I can go by is the history and historically we have always got a deal done,” he said. “I’m confident we’ll get a deal done this time but it does take two to tango and Cricket Australia, we need to understand what their intentions are. They’re firmly digging in pretty strongly here and equally we’re doing the same.”

West Indies' best chance for rare series win

Preview of the first ODI between West Indies and New Zealand in Kingston

The Preview by Abhishek Purohit04-Jul-2012Match factsThursday, July 5

Big PictureWest Indies have long been at that level where mediocrity becomes so much of a routine that you lose track of how poor they have actually become. It has been more than four years since they have won an ODI series against Test-level opposition, apart from Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. That is 14 straight bilateral series. Recent performances and the current opposition give a faint glimmer of hope, though, that the woeful run could end.West Indies tied a hard-fought series with Australia at home in March. They were expected to be beaten, but they fought. Another factor in their favour is that their opponents, New Zealand, are fellow laggards. They are ranked seventh, a point ahead of West Indies in the ICC one-day rankings, and a gulf separates the two and sixth-ranked Pakistan. Since December 2008, New Zealand have won only one bilateral ODI series against top Test-level opposition. They have even suffered a 0-4 rout to Bangladesh. If the Twenty20s were a sign of things to come, New Zealand stand no chance. They were hammered in both games in Florida. The ODI format does afford a team the time to withstand shocks and come back. But on paper, things look loaded against New Zealand. They are coming off after a long break, the conditions certainly won’t suit them, West Indies are packed with power-hitters and New Zealand are without their injured captain Ross Taylor and other key players. Again, it’s time to ‘punch above their weight’.Form guide West Indies LLLWT (completed games, most recent first)
New Zealand LLLWWWatch out for…This is the best chance for Darren Sammy to record his first ODI series win over top opposition. All the talk during his captaincy has been about ‘team over individuals’, building for the future and encouraging youth. They need to start winning some as well.It will be a tough initiation to captaincy for Kane Williamson, the youngest to lead New Zealand, and of whom much is expected for many years to come. At the very least, this short leadership stint, till Taylor comes back, can only build his character. And offer New Zealand a glimpse into the long-term future.Team newsWest Indies have stuck to the same squad that lost the ODI series to England, minus Darren Bravo and Fidel Edwards. Again, the choice to be made will be which allrounder to leave out.West Indies: (possible) 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Dwayne Smith, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Tino Best, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Sunil NarineNew Zealand have added fast bowler Trent Boult to the squad for the one-dayers. He was already part of the Test squad but is yet to make his ODI debut. Jacob Oram missed the second Twenty20 on Sunday with a knee strain but is expected to be fit for the ODIs.New Zealand: (possible) 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Daniel Flynn, 5 Dean Brownlie, 6 Tom Latham/BJ Watling (wk), 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Doug Bracewell/Tarun Nethula 11 Kyle MillsStats and trivia The last time New Zealand toured the West Indies for a bilateral series was in 2002 The last time Chris Gayle played for West Indies at Sabina Park, his home ground, was in June 2009Quotes”Without Brendon and Ross in the side we lose a bit of that experience. We’ve got quite a young batting line-up, but the guys are picked in this squad for a reason.”

“We are looking for consistency. For the past few home series we have not started well and have played catch up.”

Kapil another green shoot for Worcestershire

Jon Culley at New Road28-Apr-2012
ScorecardAneesh Kapil scored 41 to go with the three wickets he took on the first day•Getty Images

If the Met Office is to be believed, spectators still determined to attend the final day at New Road should come equipped with sou’westers and wellingtons, and possibly even access to a boat, so all of what happened on day three may be academic after Worcestershire blocked off Nottinghamshire’s attempt to secure what appeared to be the only realistic route to a positive outcome.Having reduced Worcestershire to 66 for 6 on Friday evening, before poor light soon afterwards deprived them of the chance to make further inroads, Nottinghamshire needed to stop them reaching the 94 required to avoid the follow-on and then seek to bowl them out a second time.Their plan was foiled, though, in no small part thanks to a young allrounder who is putting another feather in the cap of Worcestershire’s academy director, Damian D’Oliveira.Aneesh Kapil, an England U-19 from Wolverhampton, who joined fellow academy products Matt Pardoe, Jack Manuel and Neil Pinner in the senior squad last season, had already justified his selection by taking three wickets with his whippy fast-medium in Nottinghamshire’s first innings.Yet he is clearly capable of making his name in either discipline, as he demonstrated by making a composed and stylish 41 to help steer Worcestershire out of trouble and ensure, in all likelihood, that this match ends in a soggy draw. Not 19 until August, Kapil returned to first-team action having been blooded with some promise last summer, when his highlights included figures of 3 for 9 from four overs against Northamptonshire in Twenty20 and a half-century on his first-class debut against Sussex at Hove.He shared a partnership of 39 with James Cameron for the seventh wicket that enabled Worcestershire to steer a course into safe waters then helped Richard Jones add useful late-order runs, clipping Nottinghamshire’s lead to 86.It was a measured innings spanning two hours that included four boundaries, including one sumptuous off-drive off Harry Gurney. He succumbed finally to Andre Adams, consistently Nottinghamshire’s most dangerous bowler, although not before smacking the New Zealander’s opening delivery after lunch over extra cover for a one-bounce four.Adams, who took five in an innings seven times last season, more than any bowler in Division One, gained revenge when the youngster was leg before two balls later, completing his first five-wicket haul of the season.Harry Gurney also justified his selection by taking four wickets, the pick of them with a ball that drew Cameron into a push outside off stump that he edged to wicketkeeper Chris Read. Nottinghamshire will have Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann available to face Lancashire at Old Trafford next Wednesday but may find it difficult to leave out Gurney in favour of Luke Fletcher on this evidence. With such poor weather in prospect, Nottinghamshire may not have a chance to set up a run chase, which would be their normal course of action after closing on 88 for 2, a lead of 174.With Alan Richardson off the field nursing a minor side strain, Worcestershire gave Jones and David Lucas the new ball. Jones made an early breakthrough as Alex Hales clipped tamely to square leg, and Lucas appealed successfully for leg before against Michael Lumb, even though the ball looked a touch leg side.Neil Edwards, who was dropped by Daryl Mitchell, the captain, at second slip off Lucas on nine, went on to pull Jones for six just before the last of several interruptions for bad light. He finished unbeaten on 49.
