Arsenal make Calvert-Lewin no.1 target

Arsenal have reportedly made Dominic Calvert-Lewin their top target in the summer, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

What’s the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the ever-reliable reporter said:

“I’m told Calvert-Lewin is the one they really want. They’ve been monitoring him for a long, long time.

“I think even before [Mikel] Arteta came in, he was someone that was flagged up to Arsenal’s recruitment people as a player they thought could one day become a big star.

“He is becoming a big star at Everton, but Arsenal are aware there’s absolutely no chance of Everton sanctioning Calvert-Lewin’s sale this window.”

Striker solution?

Indeed, the Gunners were linked with a move for the England international during the summer but he’s now quoted to be worth around £60m.

Arteta desperately needs to sort out his frontline, whether that’s now or at the end of the season as come to the 2022/23 campaign, it is likely that he will have no senior options in the role.

Alexandre Lacazette is out of contract and doesn’t seem as if he’s keen to stay in north London, as is Eddie Nketiah, who could be sold before Monday’s deadline amid interest from Saudi-backed Newcastle United.

Then there is the matter of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s situation. He has not played for the club since early December when he was stripped of the captaincy following ‘another’ behind the scenes disciplinary breach. He’s attracted interest from the Middle East as well as Juventus and Barcelona ahead of deadline day.

It seems as if his Arsenal career has come to a premature end.

So, evidently, the club needs to find Arteta his new talisman and they could do little wrong in going all out for Calvert-Lewin in the summer.

The 24-year-old colossus has been injured for much of the season but has still delivered three goals in six appearances – one fewer than Aubameyang and the same as Lacazette in a fraction of the games played.

Last campaign, he bagged 21 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions, further adding to his tally of 15 in 2019/20.

Also dubbed a “nightmare” to play against, Calvert-Lewin looked up to none other than Thierry Henry growing up, so he’d be an instant hit around the Emirates Stadium.

Therefore, fans must be buzzing by Brown’s latest revelation as the Gunners look to solve their striker crisis in the coming months.

AND in other news, Arsenal eye “phenomenal” £25m dynamo with “quick feet”, he’s shades of Thierry Henry…

Kieron Pollard fined for blocking bowler's path

Kieron Pollard, the West Indies batsman, has been fined 25% of his match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct

Cricinfo staff21-May-2010Kieron Pollard, the West Indies batsman, has been fined 25% of his match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during his team’s one-run defeat at the hands of South Africa in Antigua. Pollard was charged with a Level 1 offence under article 2.1.8 of the code which relates to conduct contrary to the spirit of cricket. The incident took place in the 18th over of West Indies’ innings when Pollard ran towards the non-striker’s end in such a way that he impeded the bowler’s – Dale Steyn – path to the ball. Pollard pleaded guilty to the charge.”A competitive attitude is to be promoted and cherished on the cricket field but players must also remember at all times to play within the spirit of the game,” Roshan Mahanama, the match referee, said. “On this occasion Kieron has overstepped the mark and I have fined him 25 per cent of his match fee, a penalty that he has accepted.”

Sri Lanka run into hot Australia

Australia and Sri Lanka enter their second Super Eight encounter with bright hopes after they were successful in the opening fixtures

The Big PictureThe last time Australia and Sri Lanka played in Barbados was the 2007 World Cup final, an ODI which finished in darkness and with a third global trophy in a row for Ricky Ponting. Both teams have changed considerably since then, with Australia having only four players in the Caribbean who appeared in that game and Sri Lanka six. Each side enters their second Super Eight encounter with bright hopes after they were successful in the opening fixtures. Australia have shown their power and no signs of the slips that have softened up their previous two World Twenty20 campaigns. Following group victories against Pakistan and Bangladesh and a convincing 49-run win over India, they are the form team of the competition.Sri Lanka, who stumbled in the tournament-opener against New Zealand, lost the rust that their board complained publicly about with a 57-run thrashing of West Indies on Friday. Both teams have on-song batsmen at the top of the order while their bowling attacks are also clicking. Whoever wins will probably have done enough to earn a spot in the semi-finals, so there is extra motivation in this compelling fixture.Form guide (most recent first)Australia WWWTW
Sri Lanka WWLLWWatch out for…Mahela Jayawardene is the player of the tournament so far and a shining example for the team. In only three matches he has flooded 279 runs at 139.50, with a strike-rate of 163.15, and done it while being true to the roots of his traditional technique. If Jayawardene can keep his streak going – he has scores of 81, 100 and 98 – he can carry Sri Lanka to the final. In comparison to Jayawardene’s heroics, Shane Watson isn’t doing anything stunning. However, Watson and his partner David Warner are quickly forging a reputation as the most feared combination in the game. Watson has two half-centuries in his collection of 139 runs at 46.33, along with a strike-rate of 157.95. Sri Lanka will increase their chances of success if they take care of this brutal pair.Team newsMitchell Johnson returned against India as Australia chose their preferred XI, and there will be no need to change unless Johnson’s elbow infection flares. With their batsmen and bowlers firing, Australia have no concerns.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 Brad Haddin (wk), 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Michael Hussey, 8 Steven Smith, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Dirk Nannes, 11 Shaun Tait.Muttiah Muralitharan is out of the tournament after re-injuring his groin against West Indies and will leave a big hole. This should give another chance to the offspinner Suraj Randiv, who stepped in for Murali against Zimbabwe, or the last-minute replacement Thilan Thushara.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Mahela Jayawardene, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt, wk), 4 Chamara Kapugedera, 5 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thissara Perera, 8 Lasith Malinga, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Nuwan Kulasekara, 11 Suraj Randiv.Pitch and conditionsThis is the final game of the Super Eight stage in Barbados before the tournament heads back to St Lucia. The surface has suited the bounce of the Australian fast bowlers and the Sri Lankan batsmen can expect a lot of short balls. Another warm day is predicted for Kensington Oval.Stats and trivia Mahela Jayawardene needs another 39 runs to overhaul Tillakaratne Dilshan’s World Twenty20 tournament record of 317, which was set last year. Jayawardene has already passed Matthew Hayden’s haul of 265 in South Africa in 2007 The last time the teams played Sri Lanka knocked Australia out of the 2009 World Twenty20 in Nottingham. Australia won the only other exchange they have had in this format, which occurred in the 2007 event Michael Clarke dropped himself down the order and didn’t get a hit against India. He hasn’t batted in T20 internationals six times and on five of those occasions Australia have wonQuotes”Whatever the role you’re given, you back yourself to contribute. Opening the batting gives you more time, it suits my game.”
Mahela Jayawardene”If we can continue to make totals like that, with our bowling and the way we’re fielding, it’s going to be hard for opposition teams to beat us.”
Michael Clarke has faith in his men after they disposed of India

Bizarre endings, and Gony's nightmare

Plays of the Day from the IPL fixture between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai

Siddarth Ravindran at the MA Chidambaram Stadium31-Mar-2010
This was last year in South Africa; Manpreet Gony’s IPL 2010 has been a nightmare (file photo)•AFP

It’s not over yet
Welcome to the IPL, where things are so exciting no one’s even sure when thegame’s over. With seven deliveries remaining and Chennai Super Kings needingthree to win, R Vinay Kumar charged in to bowl. Suresh Raina slapped thewide full toss served up through covers for two, and umpire Rudi Koertzensignalled a no-ball – the extra run should have ended the match, but itdidn’t. Raina faced another delivery from Vinay, crashing it for four totake Chennai’s total five runs beyond Royal Challengers Bangalore’s and giving cricket statisticians something to quarrel about in their next meeting. The extra ball and runs were eventually discounted, and Chennai finished the game on 162.Such is life
With Chennai’s chase off to a cracking start, Harsha Bhogle, in the commentary box, was chatting to Virat Kohli, who was fielding at point, over the microphone. M Vijay slashed the next delivery towards Kohli, who was nutmegged when attempting aregulation stop. Bhogle asked after the misfield whether talking on-airhad distracted Kohli, to which his reply was: “Shit happens”.Gony baloney
It’s hard to think of a player having a worse tournament than ManpreetGony. He’s leaking runs at nearly two-a-ball, being butter-fingered in thefield, and the one chance he had to bat ended in an outrageous swipe thatcontributed to Chennai’s choke inthe match against Kings XI Punjab. It continued today, with his threeovers being smashed for 39 runs, and him dropping a straightforward catchoff Robin Uthappa at mid-off. Chennai had let off Uthappa twice in theteams’ previous encounter, but this time the batsman didn’t turn on thefireworks as he had at the Chinnaswamy.Vijay runs amuck
There’s already been a game in which Virender Sehwag was outscored by his openingpartner 29-0. It is not so far-fetched when you notice that the one makingthe runs is the explosive David Warner. It is a bit more freakish to seethe scorecard reading 38-0 (ML Hayden 0*, M Vijay 37*). Vijay isn’texactly renowned for his big hitting, but he showed off his ability tosmash the ball in the fourth over, lashing 24 leg-side runs off PraveenKumar. The over read: 0, 6, 2, 6, 4, 6.Keeping the crowd guessing
The last time Chennai played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, they made a mess of a game theyshould have won with ease. At one stage today, Chennai had needed 57 off54 with eight wickets remaining. But some tight Bangalore bowling and thewickets of MS Dhoni and Albie Morkel left Chennai needing 16 off the finaltwo overs, and the crowd remembering last week’s collapse. S Badrinath’scheeky four turned the crowd gung-ho again, before his dismissal switchedthem back to nervy. The very next delivery, though, Raina settled their worries by clubbing a no-ball for six to start the celebrations.Edgy Kallis
Jacques Kallis may have reclaimed the Orange cap with his fourthhalf-century of the tournament, but it wasn’t a classic Kallis inningstoday. He started off confidently, but couldn’t find the boundaries as theinnings progressed. In fact, his last three fours were all fortuitousoutside edges to third man. After failing to connect with five out of sixdeliveries in a row, he was dismissed attempting a sharp single off the seventh.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Luis Suarez update

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has ‘called’ former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez ahead of a possible summer swoop.

That’s according to journalist Gerard Romero, and, as to be expected, the update has received plenty of interaction from Villa supporters on social media.

Romero, who has over 300,000 Twitter followers, had previously shared details of an offer from Villa, with Suarez apparently turning down approaches from Palmeiras, Corinthians, Atletico Mineiro and a Saudi Arabian side to focus on a move to the Midlands.

He’s now added that Gerrard has ‘called’ Suarez ‘for the summer’, with the 34-year-old into his last six months on his Atletico Madrid contract.

Gerrard’s former Reds teammate will turn 35 on Monday, but it seems as if a return to the Premier League to reunite with Gerrard and possibly Philippe Coutinho could be on the cards.

Villa fans react

@villareport relayed Romero’s update regarding Suarez on Twitter. This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with one labelling a possible move as ‘incredible’.

A inexperiência do quarteto comprometerá o próximo ano?

Carli – 79 jogos e quatro gols – 31 anos

Sky share live TV Spurs news on Kessie

Speaking live on Sky Sports, reporter Dharmesh Sheth has shared some transfer news out of Tottenham Hotspur involving AC Milan star Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Top Spurs target…

As reported in recent weeks, the Ivory Coast star is well and truly a target for Spurs and manager Antonio Conte as the Italian seeks to kickstart the N17 rebuild.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Telegraph have most recently backed that the Lilywhites and transfer chief Fabio Paratici are considering a move for Kessie before Janaury 31 to avoid a free agent bidding war in the summer.

His San Siro contract expires at the end of this season but Spurs apparently want to get ahead of the competition and sign a player high on Conte’s agenda.

Sharing news on live TV, Sky have now dropped their own update as they back Tottenham’s interest.

The Latest: Sky drop Kessie to Spurs claim…

Sheth, speaking to Sky, reiterates that Tottenham are indeed in the picture in a live-on-air transfer message.

“Another line just reaching us now as well, this was mooted us to by Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio, you remember, in our Christmas special,” he explained.

“Tottenham manager Antonio Conte a long term admirer of Franck Kessie.

“Tottenham, we’re told, are interested in a deal to sign Kessie in this transfer window, I’ve just messaged Di Marzio just now as well.

“He’s come back very, very quickly – I said ‘look, what’s the latest with Kessie’ and he seems to think there’s a possibility of PSG as well as this Tottenham interest.”

The Verdict: Mixed update…

News of a reliable source backing Tottenham’s interest in the player will come as potentially promising, but the presence of financial powerhouses and Ligue 1 giants PSG in the race could come as a slight blow.

There is little arguing that Kessie’s addition would be a welcome boost for Conte given the midfielder has bagged an impressive 19 goals since the start of 2020/2021 and could leave for much lower than his estimated £43.2 million valuation (Transfermarkt).

Conte’s big name manager status and the pull of the Premier League could be enough to sway the African star as clubs form an orderly queue, but it will be interesting to see if Spurs do in fact win the signing race.

I’m looking forward to seeing him play for Yorkshire this year and I’m sure our members and supporters will enjoy Herschelle’s style of cricket too.”
