Series win beckons for South Africa

ESPNcricinfo previews the fourth ODI of Pakistan’s series against South Africa in Dubai

The Preview by Firdose Moonda and Liam Brickhill01-Nov-2010Match FactsNovember 5, Dubai
Start time 15:00 (11:00 GMT)Pakistan fell two runs short in the third ODI despite a gutsy half-century from Fawad Alam•Associated Press

The Big PictureSouth Africa have an opportunity to wrap up the five-match series in the fourth match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, but to make sure that happens, they will have to improve on an area that they are traditionally world class in: fielding. Daryll Cullinan, the former South Africa batsman, labelled the current team “the worst fielding side since readmission”, and while the situation may not be quite that dire, the number of dropped catches and missed run-out chances in Tuesday’s match suggested there is still some work to be done. The bowling has also been a concern for South Africa, and although they successfully defended 228 in the third ODI, Pakistan came within two runs of a thrilling win. The bowlers leaked 56 runs during the batting Powerplay in that match and have to find a way of plugging the gap soon. The likely return of Dale Steyn should help in that regard, but Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s withdrawal due to a back spasm is unfortunate. Tsotsobe had done a great deal to further his claims for a full-time spot as South Africa’s limited-overs new-ball bowler on this tour, picking up six wickets in the first three games at a parsimonious 3.13 runs to the over. His canny changes of pace and unhittable lengths played a major role in South Africa’s triumph on Tuesday, and he will surely be missed.Pakistan have already pulled off one magnificent series leveller, in the second match, and will have to aim for a repeat performance. Their bowling, Mohammed Hafeez in particular, has kept the pressure on the South Africans and Akhtar also showed how vicious he can still be, even on a slow, low Dubai wicket, in Tuesday’s match. It’s the batting that has really let Pakistan down. Abdul Razzaq’s magnificent century bailed them out in the second ODI and Fawad Alam’s gutsy, unbeaten 59 almost did the trick on Tuesday, but without a strong performance from the top six, Pakistan are always at risk of being found wanting.Form guide(most recent first)
South Africa: WLWWW
Pakistan: LWLLWWatch out for…Such is the nature of the role of ‘finisher’ in the one-day game, a particularly acute focus is brought to bear on the successes or failures of any player designated with that position. Fawad Alam’s place in Pakistan’s middle order has been open to such scrutiny since his inauspicious debut on one of their previous visits to Abu Dhabi, but he appears to be settling into the role and registered his fourth ODI fifty in the third match. With another close finish a distinct possibility, his contribution at the death could prove the difference.Wayne Parnell wasn’t quite at his best on his return from injury against Zimbabwe in October, but appeared increasingly confident with each outing and his enviable limited-overs record suggests he’ll have a leading role to play – particularly, as a left-armer, in Tsotsobe’s absence. His value is increased by his stubborn batting and youthful energy in the field.Team newsGraeme Smith has recovered from the blow to his hand courtesy of Shoaib Ahktar in the first match, and returns to the top of the order. Steyn’s return will go some way towards making up for Tsotsobe’s absence, while Parnell slots in as an allround option.South Africa (possible): 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 Colin Ingram, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Albie Morkel 8 Johan Botha, 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne MorkelPakistan need something inspirational to draw level with South Africa, and so the temptation to bring back Umar Akmal’s X-factor will arise once again. It’s unclear who might make way for him, with Asad Shafiq the likeliest to sit out. With Umar Gul yet to recover from injury, and Wahab Riaz performing admirably in his absence, the bowling line-up should be settled. However, Shahid Afridi has hinted that left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman could come in for Saeed Ajmal, who has been less effective than it was hoped he would be.Pakistan (possible): 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Shahid Afridi (capt), 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Zulqarnain Haider (wk), 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Shoaib Akhtar, 11 Saeed Ajmal/Abdur Rehman
Pitch and conditionsThe wicket generally played true, although slightly slow and low, on Tuesday and there’s no reason for conditions to be any different on Friday with the same strip being used for all three games. With the wear and tear from the last match, there should be a little life in the pitch to keep both the seamers and spinners interested. Hot, sunny conditions should prevail in the afternoon with a warm, dry evening to follow.Stats and trivia South Africa’s 228 for 9 in the last game is the highest ever total at the Dubai International Stadium, although it was also just the third ODI to be played at the venue. It has hosted 12 Twenty20 internationals, many of which have also been low-scoring affairs with Pakistan’s 161 for 8 against New Zealand last year the highest score in that format.
Hashim Amla has scored eight international hundreds, three in Tests and five in ODIs, this year, with 1782 runs at 81.00 in 20 matches. His 119 in the last match took him straight to the top of the list of leading run-scorers at the Dubai International cricket stadium. Shahid Afridi tops the wicket-takers’ list for this venue, with 10 scalps in three games here.Quotes”The victory in the second one-day match and the close finish here has given us the confidence. If we can play with a positive mind, we can win the fourth match.”
“”The wicket is not going to be easier as it is going to be same strip for all three one-dayers and that is going to be interesting.”

Spurs handed Juan Cuadrado boost

Aside from the arrival of Emerson, Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Fabio Paratici hasn’t got a lot wrong and he could well seal another fine signing indeed…

What’s the word?

Last month, journalist Rudy Galetti reported of Spurs’ interest in Juventus wing-back Juan Cuadrado, claiming that the Italian supremo would “be glad to welcome” him to north London.

The 33-year-old, who is out of contract at Juventus in the summer, has also been tipped as a potential target for the Lilywhites by reporter Pete O’Rourke.

He said to This Is Futbol:

“Maybe if they’re not able to land a Djed Spence or a [Tino] Livramento, Cuadrado could fit the bill.”

Now, it’s been suggested that the long-serving defender has “differences” over a new contract at the Serie A giants, according to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra.

“Despite having reached a verbal agreement last October, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado (33) has not yet renewed with #Juventus due to recent differences.

“The ‘Bianconeri’ offer 2 years (option to 3) and salary reduction. The Colombian asks for the same payment and 2 seasons,” he tweeted.

Perfect fit

Although the 111-time Colombian international is the wrong side of 30, he could be quite an ideal fit under Antonio Conte at Hotspur Way.

Since leaving arch-rivals Chelsea for the Old Lady, Cuadrado has emerged as an impressive right wing-back option, playing 64.1% of his 262 appearances in the role, where he has also delivered 42 assists, via Transfermarkt.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

With Matt Doherty’s season over with a nasty injury, and subsequently his long-term future at the club in doubt, Spurs could well be in need of a new right wing-back heading into next season, even more so when you combine that with Emerson, who could be sold after a poor debut campaign.

A younger player may be what the fans want but it’s hard to ignore someone of Cuadrado’s experience, especially if the Lilywhites make the top four.

Evidently, the veteran is still a durable and reliable option, having played 30 of Juve’s 32 league games this season, where he ranks as Max Allegri’s second-best performer with an average WhoScored rating of 7.22 – only Paulo Dybala has managed higher.

He leads the squad for chances created (1.7 key passes per game) and has been solid defensively (1.4 tackles per game) too.

Paratici has a history of securing high-value freebies as during his time at the Allianz Stadium he secured the likes of Paul Pogba, Andrea Pirlo and Kingsley Coman without paying a single transfer fee, whilst his work at Spurs in signing the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur is also encouraging.

Cuadrado, who was once dubbed as a “different animal” by journalist Zach Lowry, would surely be another name to add to the tally, and the fact that he is unlikely to sign a new deal is certainly a huge boost for Spurs heading into the summer.

AND in other news, Shades of Kane: Conte can save Spurs millions with “flashy” 14 G/A gem who’s “flying”…

Nilesh Kulkarni quits first-class cricket

Nilesh Kulkarni, the left-arm spinner who played three Tests and ten ODIs for India, has announced his retirement from first-class cricket. “I have a small announcement to make that I am retiring from international and first-class cricket,” Kulkarni said at the launch of Indian Institute of Sports Management, in Mumbai.Kulkarni, 37, has been a stalwart for Mumbai since 1994-95. He took 308 first-class wickets for his team and 95 wickets in List A games. Kulkarni made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1997-98 and he hit the record books immediately by claiming a wicket off his first ball in Tests, that of Marvan Atapattu. He is the only Indian bowler to achieve this feat and the 12th bowler in the history of the game. He sent down 70 overs but amazingly enough that was the only Test wicket he took for he had the misfortune to bowl when the Sri Lankan batsmen set several records in running up the highest total in Tests. He played in one more Test at home against Sri Lanka but had to wait till 2001 for a Test return. He took one more wicket in the Chennai Test against Australia, which turned out to be his last. He claimed 11 wickets in ten ODIs with a best of 3 for 27.He ends his first-class career with 357 wickets and List A with 135 strikes.

Leeds target Fofana hints at Lens exit

Leeds United transfer target Seko Fofana has refused to rule out the idea of leaving Lens this summer, giving the Whites fresh hope of sealing a move for him.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with Fofana move

The Whites may have had a quiet January transfer window but incomings are expected in the summer, with reinforcements needed particularly in midfield, where Brenden Aaronson is said to be a target again after the failed bids last month.

Another player Leeds have been linked with recently is Fofana, who is enjoying a good season with Lens, scoring seven goals in 24 Ligue 1 appearances.

Other Premier League clubs, namely Burnley and Newcastle, are also keen, and they have all been boosted after new comments from the French-born Ivory Coast international emerged.

The Latest: Midfield hints at exit

Speaking to Foot Mercato [via Sport Witness], Fofana claimed that ‘nothing is impossible’ regarding a potential Lens exit at the end of the season, with Leeds name-checked with ‘real interest’ in the report:

“To be honest, nothing is impossible. Today, I can very well say yes (stay at Lens) and tomorrow it will be no.

“There are a lot of parameters and we don’t control everything. I am very happy to be here. We try to go as far as possible and I remain focused on this end of the season. I hope we will go as far as possible.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-34/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Strong summer addition

Midfield is an area that clearly needs strengthening this summer, with Kalvin Phillips relied upon far too much and Adam Forshaw suffering huge injury problems over the last few years.

Fofana looks an ideal man to come in and add quality in the middle of the park, with his aforementioned scoring record coupled with a hugely impressive 90.7% pass completion rate in the league this season.

Not only that but he has also averaged 0.7 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per match, which although not earth-shattering numbers, show he is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades who can chip in defensively when needed.

He produced a ‘masterclass’ performance against French giants PSG back in December, with journalist Zach Lowy saying he is a ‘phenom’ who ‘absolutely dominated’ Marco Verratti, Danilo Pereira and Leandro Paredes.

In other news, Phil Hay claims one Leeds player could require surgery. Find out who it is here.
