Karachi Whites draw, and fail to make final

Rain allowed only 30 overs on the fourth day, and Karachi Whites managed a draw, but they had already lost their chance of making the finals

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Dec-2010Khan Research Laboratories pocketed first-innings points as Karachi Whites finished on 262 for 5 in their second innings in the 30 overs possible today in Karachi. Though Asif Zakir fell early to Yasir Arafat, Rameez Aziz carried on to make a half-century before he fell caught behind to seamer Shakeel-ur-Rehman for 61. Ali Asad and Javed Mansoor ensured no further damage for Karachi. However, after KRL had taken a massive first-innings lead, Karachi’s chances of making the final were dashed. They finished three points behind second-placed State Bank of Pakistan, who now take on leaders KRL in the final at Rawalpindi from December 31.

Gayle triple-century lights up Galle

Chris Gayle became the fourth batsman to make two Test triple-centuries to put West Indies on top in Galle

A mesmerising late spell from Ajantha Mendis was not enough to overshadow a Chris Gayle triple-century on the second day of the first Test in Galle, as the West Indies opener’s 333 took the visitors to a daunting first innings total of 580 for 9 declared. Gayle etched his name in history when he became just the fourth batsman after Bradman, Lara and Sehwag to make two 300-plus scores in Tests, and celebrated the milestone not by lying down on the pitch as he did yesterday, but by kneeling with his arms aloft, grateful that he had given his side the perfect platform to pursue their first ever Test win on Sri Lankan soil.Smart Stats

Chris Gayle became only the fourth batsman to score two triple centuries after Don Bradman (334 and 304), Brian Lara (375 and 400*) and Virender Sehwag (309 and 319).

Gayle went past Rohan Kanhai’s 256 to become the West Indian batsman with the highest individual score in the subcontinent.

The triple hundred is the 24th overall and the tenth by a left hander. It was also the third triple hundred in Sri Lanka.

Gayle holds the record for the highest individual score against Sri Lanka, going past Younis Khan’s 313.

Gayle’s 333 is the highest away score by a West Indies batsman, surpassing Viv Richards’ 291 at the Oval in 1976.

.Gayle’s knock is the highest individual score by a visiting batsman in Sri Lanka, going past Stephen Fleming’s 274.

With nine sixes in his innings, Gayle holds the record for the most sixes by a West Indian batsman in a Test innings.

The 167 run stand between Brendan Nash and Gayle for the fourth wicket is the best for the West Indies against Sri Lanka and the seventh highest for the fourth wicket against Sri Lanka.

This was Anjantha Mendis’ third five wicket haul and second at Galle after his 6 for 117 against India in July 2008. Of his 56 wickets, 46 have come at home at an average of 29.23. His away record is very poor with ten wickets at 46.80.

Yesterday Gayle broke the back of the Sri Lankan attack with a blistering double-ton. Today, he took careful aim at the records. First to go was the stadium top score. Mahela Jayawardene’s 237 was eclipsed in the morning session by a subdued Gayle, who seemed to be a more determined version of the swashbuckling dynamo that had set the ground alight on day one – he added just nine more boundaries in over two sessions of batting after smashing 26 fours and eight sixes on the first day. Soon after lunch Gayle bettered the highest score by a West Indies batsman in the subcontinent – Rohan Kanhai’s 256 in Kolkata – a record that had stood for 48 years. Following the tea break, he surpassed Younis Khan’s 313 to make the highest score by any batsman against Sri Lanka as well as improving on his own previous best of 317 a few deliveries later. The first milestone of the day however, was not Gayle’s, but Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s, as he went past 9000 Test runs before being undone by Suraj Randiv’s bounce on 32. Brendan Nash then hunkered down alongside Gayle as they accumulated intelligently, picking the gaps to good effect and hitting the odd boundary to keep the scoreboard moving at a decent clip. The pair cemented West Indies’ absolute dominance over the game with a 167-run partnership for the fourth wicket and, almost as crucially, ensured that the hosts were made to toil in the sapping Galle heat for two more sessions. Still a little dazed by Gayle’s first day ballistics, Sri Lanka were ground into the dust by a determined display from the West Indies top order. With the team flagging, Mendis somehow produced an inspired burst to run through the remainder of the West Indies order, and hastened a declaration that at one stage seemed light years away. Mendis first had Nash trapped plumb in front for 64 with a straighter delivery, before repeating the dose for Dwayne Bravo in his next over, this time with a googly. Gayle’s marathon knock finally came to an end when he was bowled by a terrific Mendis carrom ball, and when Darren Sammy departed the very next ball, the end was finally nigh for West Indies. Mendis picked up one more wicket to make it a six-wicket haul, and Suraj Randiv added one more to his tally, before Sammy ended the innings with a declaration that was long overdue.Tillekeratne Dilshan made matters worse for the hosts when he lamely lobbed Andre Russell’s second ball towards Shane Shillingford at mid on to leave the hosts at 6 for 1 and give Russell his first Test wicket, but Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara came out playing his shots, and his unbeaten 32-ball 33 would have given the hosts hope, especially if the pitch remains good for batting on day three.

Series win beckons for South Africa

ESPNcricinfo previews the fourth ODI of Pakistan’s series against South Africa in Dubai

The Preview by Firdose Moonda and Liam Brickhill01-Nov-2010Match FactsNovember 5, Dubai
Start time 15:00 (11:00 GMT)Pakistan fell two runs short in the third ODI despite a gutsy half-century from Fawad Alam•Associated Press

The Big PictureSouth Africa have an opportunity to wrap up the five-match series in the fourth match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, but to make sure that happens, they will have to improve on an area that they are traditionally world class in: fielding. Daryll Cullinan, the former South Africa batsman, labelled the current team “the worst fielding side since readmission”, and while the situation may not be quite that dire, the number of dropped catches and missed run-out chances in Tuesday’s match suggested there is still some work to be done. The bowling has also been a concern for South Africa, and although they successfully defended 228 in the third ODI, Pakistan came within two runs of a thrilling win. The bowlers leaked 56 runs during the batting Powerplay in that match and have to find a way of plugging the gap soon. The likely return of Dale Steyn should help in that regard, but Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s withdrawal due to a back spasm is unfortunate. Tsotsobe had done a great deal to further his claims for a full-time spot as South Africa’s limited-overs new-ball bowler on this tour, picking up six wickets in the first three games at a parsimonious 3.13 runs to the over. His canny changes of pace and unhittable lengths played a major role in South Africa’s triumph on Tuesday, and he will surely be missed.Pakistan have already pulled off one magnificent series leveller, in the second match, and will have to aim for a repeat performance. Their bowling, Mohammed Hafeez in particular, has kept the pressure on the South Africans and Akhtar also showed how vicious he can still be, even on a slow, low Dubai wicket, in Tuesday’s match. It’s the batting that has really let Pakistan down. Abdul Razzaq’s magnificent century bailed them out in the second ODI and Fawad Alam’s gutsy, unbeaten 59 almost did the trick on Tuesday, but without a strong performance from the top six, Pakistan are always at risk of being found wanting.Form guide(most recent first)
South Africa: WLWWW
Pakistan: LWLLWWatch out for…Such is the nature of the role of ‘finisher’ in the one-day game, a particularly acute focus is brought to bear on the successes or failures of any player designated with that position. Fawad Alam’s place in Pakistan’s middle order has been open to such scrutiny since his inauspicious debut on one of their previous visits to Abu Dhabi, but he appears to be settling into the role and registered his fourth ODI fifty in the third match. With another close finish a distinct possibility, his contribution at the death could prove the difference.Wayne Parnell wasn’t quite at his best on his return from injury against Zimbabwe in October, but appeared increasingly confident with each outing and his enviable limited-overs record suggests he’ll have a leading role to play – particularly, as a left-armer, in Tsotsobe’s absence. His value is increased by his stubborn batting and youthful energy in the field.Team newsGraeme Smith has recovered from the blow to his hand courtesy of Shoaib Ahktar in the first match, and returns to the top of the order. Steyn’s return will go some way towards making up for Tsotsobe’s absence, while Parnell slots in as an allround option.South Africa (possible): 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 Colin Ingram, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Albie Morkel 8 Johan Botha, 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne MorkelPakistan need something inspirational to draw level with South Africa, and so the temptation to bring back Umar Akmal’s X-factor will arise once again. It’s unclear who might make way for him, with Asad Shafiq the likeliest to sit out. With Umar Gul yet to recover from injury, and Wahab Riaz performing admirably in his absence, the bowling line-up should be settled. However, Shahid Afridi has hinted that left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman could come in for Saeed Ajmal, who has been less effective than it was hoped he would be.Pakistan (possible): 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Shahid Afridi (capt), 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Zulqarnain Haider (wk), 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Shoaib Akhtar, 11 Saeed Ajmal/Abdur Rehman
Pitch and conditionsThe wicket generally played true, although slightly slow and low, on Tuesday and there’s no reason for conditions to be any different on Friday with the same strip being used for all three games. With the wear and tear from the last match, there should be a little life in the pitch to keep both the seamers and spinners interested. Hot, sunny conditions should prevail in the afternoon with a warm, dry evening to follow.Stats and trivia South Africa’s 228 for 9 in the last game is the highest ever total at the Dubai International Stadium, although it was also just the third ODI to be played at the venue. It has hosted 12 Twenty20 internationals, many of which have also been low-scoring affairs with Pakistan’s 161 for 8 against New Zealand last year the highest score in that format.
Hashim Amla has scored eight international hundreds, three in Tests and five in ODIs, this year, with 1782 runs at 81.00 in 20 matches. His 119 in the last match took him straight to the top of the list of leading run-scorers at the Dubai International cricket stadium. Shahid Afridi tops the wicket-takers’ list for this venue, with 10 scalps in three games here.Quotes”The victory in the second one-day match and the close finish here has given us the confidence. If we can play with a positive mind, we can win the fourth match.”
“”The wicket is not going to be easier as it is going to be same strip for all three one-dayers and that is going to be interesting.”

Alastair Cook shrugged off a testing start to the tour with a century while Andrew Strauss displayed more attacking intent as England completed a strong warm-up against South Australia. The hundreds for the openers capped an encouraging three days for the tourists, even though rain limited the bowlers’ work on the final afternoon and the contest finished in a draw.Cook’s unbeaten 111 followed Strauss’s blazing 102 off 121 balls as they shared a 181-run opening stand that put them in touch ahead of the first Ashes Test on November 25. Strauss declared shortly before lunch at 1 for 240, setting the hosts 380 for a victory which became even more improbable when rain washed out the second session.James Anderson showed more spark with 2 for 23, removing James Smith to an edge to third slip and seeing Jonathan Trott dive to catch Michael Klinger’s pull. Callum Ferguson was on 11 and Daniel Harris on 18 when bad light ended the game. The only problem with the fine display of the England openers on the second and third days was it prevented Kevin Pietersen from having a bat. Still, there is nothing better for a touring team than having their captain in excellent touch, and Strauss quickly picked up where he left off on Friday.England re-started from 0 for 94 and Strauss skipped towards his century, his second of the trip. After accelerating with three fours off a Peter George over, Strauss brought up his hundred by launching the spinner Aaron O’Brien to long-on. Three balls later he tried for another big shot off O’Brien and was bowled, departing with 13 fours and four sixes.Cook, who started the trip with scores of 5, 9 and 32, was more patient and eased his way towards his milestone, although he showed flashes off aggression. His collection of 18 fours included three in a row off Tim Lang to go to 92. He also lifted O’Brien for six to midwicket during his 162-ball stay.Jonathan Trott was unbeaten on 20 while Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Ian Bell were unused. It’s a minor issue after such a handy all-round performance.

Duminy propels South Africa to series win

JP Duminy smashed Zimbabwe’s insipid lengths to all corners in an entertaining, unbeaten 95 to launch his side to 194, a total that his bowling colleagues defended after a few hiccups, to give their side a 2-0 series win.

JP Duminy smashed Zimbabwe’s insipid lengths to all corners in an entertaining, unbeaten 96 to launch his side to 194, a total that his bowling colleagues defended after a few hiccups, to give their side a 2-0 series win. Duminy’s dazzling innings, the highest individual score by a South Africa batsman, was matched by fifties from Brendon Taylor and Chamu Chibhabha, but South Africa emerged in front thanks to Juan Theron’s unhittable lengths, on a day when bowlers from both sides struggled to find their range.Zimbabwe’s openers began the chase in meek fashion, as the Powerplay overs, including three without boundaries, yielded only 45 for the loss of Hamilton Masakadza. Taylor and Chibhabha, however, were only just loading their guns.Taylor imposed himself on Johan Botha’s niggardly lines by stepping out and teeing off down the ground in the seventh over. Robin Petersen, introduced in the eighth, ran into Chibhabha who announced his intentions with a swipe over cow corner. Taylor pulled another six in the same over and the chase was on its way.Botha had enjoyed an exceptionally economical Champions League, but Taylor’s quicksilver feet converted his flat and full lengths into full tosses and half-volleys. Eleven runs came off Botha’s second over, forcing an unscheduled bowling change as South Africa began to sweat. Duminy, who came on in the 11th, delivered three friendly half-trackers, all of which Chibhabha redirected towards and beyond the leg-side boundary. 106 for 1, with nine overs to go – game on.With 73 required off 43, Chibhabha mistimed a sweep off Botha, who had resorted to a round the wicket angle. South Africa used the opening to claw back into the game, as Taylor was deprived of the strike, resulting in a mounting asking-rate. Charles Coventry’s exit in the 15th over gave the hosts the upper hand, and they should have assumed total control once Taylor perished trying to inside-out Petersen over the covers. However, Wayne Parnell’s inability to find the right lengths helped Elton Chigumbura and Tatenda Taibu keep the game alive until the last over. Theron’s nerveless finish stalled them on the home stretch though Zimbabwe managed to record their highest Twenty20 total. As in the first game, Zimbabwe had their bowlers to blame for the defeat. Graeme Smith began brightly, with the free spirit of someone unfettered by responsibility. His aggression offset the tight start from Prosper Utseya, who forced Loots Bosman and Colin Ingram into early indiscretions with his lack of pace.Smith, on the other hand, relished the pace and waywardness served up at the other end. Shingirai Masakadza and Chris Mpofu kept dropping short and into his body, and Smith responded with an array of pulls. Over-compensation duly followed, and Smith got into position early to cream boundaries through the off side. The highlight of his innings was when he stepped out to deposit Graeme Cremer over long-on, before Taylor induced Smith to top-edge in the ninth over.Zimbabwe’s hopes of pulling things back were neutralised by Duminy’s innovativeness against their army of offspinners. He kept setting himself up for the reverse-sweep, dispatching Cremer with the spin towards third man, before launching him over deep midwicket in the 12th over, forcing Chigumbura to bring back the fast bowlers. The move played into Duminy’s hands, as he prepared for the final assault by lifting the listless Mpofu through midwicket. After David Miller’s exit, he mowed a poorly-disguised slower ball from Shingirai Masakadza over deep midwicket as Zimbabwe ran out of viable options. Unfortunately for them, Duminy still had a lot of ammunition in the tank.Mpofu suffered the brunt of his blitz, but he did his cause little good by serving up hit-me lengths in the death overs. A half-volley in the 18th was knifed over covers; a full toss later in the same over went in the same direction. Duminy went into the last over with 75 against his name, but Mpofu had more largesse in store, raising hopes of the maiden Twenty20 century by a South African. There was to be another full toss, and a smattering of half-volleys in that over, all of which Duminy gladly tucked into. Fours through the covers, and sixes straight and over midwicket, left Mpofu nursing figures of 1 for 59 off four, Duminy four short of a ton, and Zimbabwe chasing a mountain.Around 90 minutes of poor bowling later, Theron showed Mpofu how it should have been done. The difference between their last-over lengths was the difference between their sides today.

Leeds suffer injury blow before Man City

Leeds United have suffered a fresh injury setback ahead of their Premier League clash against Manchester City on Saturday evening…

What’s the story?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against the league leaders, Marsch revealed: “Crysencio Summerville picked up an injury in the last training we had before the Palace match which is really unfortunate because he’s been in really good form.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

“He twisted his ankle and he will be done for the season unfortunately. That one was disappointing and then Adam (Forshaw) is moving forward in a good way but it’ll still be some time for him.”

Marsch will be gutted

While Summerville may have just seven minutes of Premier League action to his name since the turn of the year, he has been a shining light for the club’s under-23s, netting a fine hat-trick against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

After watching him make his senior debut at St James’ Park against Newcastle earlier this season, Whites under-23 boss Mark Jackson said: “Proud to see any player step up and make a debut. I was watching the game, Cry’s worked extremely hard.

“He’s been one of them players, like I said with Amari (Miller), the new players, it takes time to gel but I spoke to him yesterday at the training ground. I said ‘that’s your little taste of it, now the hardest part is trying to establish yourself in the team for any player.”

Hailed as a “bag of tricks” by Chris Powell, his former coach when Summerville was a teenager at Dutch side ADO Den Haag, the 20-year-old was in excellent form for Leeds’ youth teams last season, netting an impressive six goals and providing a further six assists in just 12 Premier League 2 games.

Given that Leeds are still contending with injuries at the top end of the pitch to the likes of Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts, having another attacking option in their ranks like Summerville would have been a welcome boost for Marsch.

While relegation is still certainly on the cards, Leeds look unlikely to go down that given Everton and Burnley remain below them and with a point buffer between them.

Summerville could well have been given further opportunities to shine in the first-team had he not gone down with injury, and it’s exactly why Marsch may be gutted at not being able to get a deeper first-hand look at the youngster.

Leeds: Orta handed Nketiah boost

Leeds United have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Eddie Nketiah back to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that, despite the centre-forward revealing that he is in discussions with Arsenal regarding a new contract, the 22-year-old will wait until the end of the season – when his current deal at The Emirates expires – before making a decision on his future.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

This is likely to come as a huge boost to Victor Orta and Leeds United, who have once again been rumoured to be interested in the signing of the former England U21 international this summer.

“Extraordinary at his age”

Considering the fact that Leeds were linked with a £20m move for Nketiah as recently as last summer, the news that the Whites could land the striker for free at the end of the current campaign is sure to have left Orta buzzing.

While it is true that the £9m-rated forward has not had much chance to impress under the management of Mikel Arteta this season – making 21 appearances in all competitions, only seven of which have come as starts – the 22-year-old has nevertheless proven that when given the opportunity he is more than capable of finding the back of the net.

Indeed, over his five Carabao Cup fixtures this term, the £45k-per-week hitman bagged an extremely impressive five goals – including one in a 2-0 victory over Leeds – on the Gunners’ way to the semi-final of the competition, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Liverpool.

Furthermore, the player who Noel Whelan dubbed a “dangerous” talent and Arteta claimed is “extraordinary at his age” also impressed during a loan spell at Elland Road back in 2019, scoring five goals and registering one assist over his 19 appearances for the Whites – averaging a direct goal involvement every 106 minutes of football played.

As such, considering his undoubted goalscoring ability and potential for development in the future, Nketiah’s signing would certainly appear to be a huge coup for Jesse Marsch’s side – particularly with it looking as if Orta could land the 22-year-old for nothing.

Fixing allegations could taint Sydney win – Ponting

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said his team’s performance in last year’s Sydney Test would be tarnished if the match-fixing allegations are true

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said the performances of his players in last year’s Sydney Test against Pakistan would be tainted if the allegations of match-fixing surrounding that game turn out to be true. Ponting was reacting to murmurs about the Sydney game following the scandal unfolding at Lord’s where Pakistan’s players were alleged to have indulged in spot-fixing by a sting operation.”The way we won was one of the more satisfying moments that I’ve had on the cricket field,” Ponting told . “And now when some of these things come to light is when you start to slightly doubt some of the things that have happened.”Australia won the Test by 36 runs after conceding a first innings lead of 206. In their second innings, Australia were 49 runs ahead with just two wickets in hand, but managed to extend their advantage to 176 thanks to an obstinate 123-run ninth-wicket partnership between Michael Hussey and Peter Siddle. Pakistan then floundered badly against Nathan Hauritz, whose five-wicket haul ensured the tourists fell agonisingly short in their pursuit.”The thing that I’m most worried about if any of this is proven to be true is some of the individual performances that took place in that game,” Ponting said. “You look at Mike Hussey’s second innings hundred and Peter Siddle’s batting and the way he was with Mike Hussey that day and Nathan Hauritz taking five wickets on the final day to win us the game. All of those individual milestones will be tainted as well.”Ponting said he had no inclination that anything was amiss at the time but the manner of Pakistan’s capitulation raised more than a few eyebrows and the Test was investigated by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, which found no evidence of match-fixing.Meawhile Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland also said he believes the Sydney Test was clean and that Australia won the game on merit. He reacted to the news of the alleged spot-fixing by calling for a thorough investigation into the incident by both the UK police and the ICC.”It is critical for cricket that the public has confidence in the integrity of the outcomes of games,” Sutherland said, “which is why CA and other ICC members have supported the significant world cricket investment in anti-corruption over the last decade or more.”While admitting he was not aware of the details of the sting operation, Sutherland said such incidents are the reason the ICC must remain ever vigilant.”As Lord Paul Condon, the founder of the ICC anti-corruption process has always said, vigilance can never be relaxed.”
