Crystal Palace: Eagles keen on Thomas Delaney swoop

Crystal Palace are interested in a swoop for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Thomas Delaney as he eyes a move to England [The Boot Room via Sky Germany].

The Lowdown: Crystal Palace drift closer to the 2021/22 campaign

Looking towards 2021/22, much mystery still surrounds the direction of the Eagles as they remain manager-less owing to the departure of Roy Hodgson last month [Independent].

Still keen on recruiting players, they have made one addition to the Selhurst Park fold this window in the form of 22-year-old American midfielder Jacob Montes [Crystal Palace FC Official].

They could now be set to target a major coup following recent claims.

The Latest: Delaney linked with Palace; other Premier League sides are also interested

Palace are embroiled in a transfer pursuit for Denmark international Delaney [The Boot Room].

He is in the last year of his contract at the Signal Iduna Park, whilst is rumoured to have agitated for a switch to English football should the correct opportunity present itself.

Southampton and Norwich City are also said to be interested in the 29-year-old.

However, Crystal Palace may hold an advantage over at least one of these clubs, following news that the Canaries are set to acquire Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on a season-long loan deal instead [Sky Sports].

The Verdict: Delaney would be a major coup

On the face of it, Delaney would be a top signing whose attributes and mentality would be tailor-made for Premier League football.

In 2020/21, the anchor man was outstanding for the North-Rhine side, making 34 appearances and registering six goal contributions; one goal and five assists [Transfermarkt].

He has also shone at EURO 2020 with his native Denmark, making 16 ball recoveries in four games for the quarter-finalists [UEFA].

A born winner, he has amassed 11 trophies during his time in senior football; five Danish Superliga titles and four Danish Cup trophies with Copenhagen, accompanied by one DFL-Super Cup and a DFB-Pokal in 2021 with Borussia Dortmund [Transfermarkt].

Once described as a ‘very important player’ by Edin Terzić, he has been a midfield lynchpin throughout his career [FanSided], with a mixture of toughness and quality which is sure to improve the Eagles.

Providing battling midfield qualities with two tackles per game in the German top flight this season, Delaney is definitely a player Steve Parish and co should be going all out for.

Snape faces x-ray on injured thumb

England have yet another injury concern following their eight-wicket defeat at the hands of New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

CricInfo06-Dec-2002England have yet another injury concern following their eight-wicket defeat at the hands of New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground.Off-spinner Jeremy Snape was hit on the right thumb by the first delivery he faced from Brett Lee and will have an X-ray tomorrow, while Hussain left the field to receive ice treatment on a sore left thigh and right knee.England’s top scorer Ronnie Irani admitted: “It was difficult conditions for us and they didn’t have a lot to lose but showed superb flair and were quite awesome. We were probably about 30 or 40 runs short but in saying that they made it look easy in the end.”In Australia in one-day cricket, whatever score you think is good on that sort of wicket you have got to add 20 or 30 runs on because they’re that good at the moment – and that wasn’t Australia.”Nasser (Hussain) will be very disappointed,” added Irani. “He’s very passionate about his side whether they are playing New South Wales or Australia and he wants to do well. He’s obviously hurting inside about what’s happened on this tour, there’s no doubt about that.”He’s passionate as captain and wants England to do well and lives, sleepsand breathes every minute for the English national team. It’s a huge disappointment for him so far, but he’s up for these games and he’s up for the rest of the series.”It’s tough, but it’s tough when you’re at the top and he’s captain of England playing against the best team in the world – he’s a survivor, he’s not someone who gives up and he’s a fighter.”Meanwhile New South Wales centurion Michael Slater had some sympathy for England, and believes they can take some positives from the defeat as they prepare for Sunday’s day-night encounter with Australia A at the same venue.”It’s early on for them in this one-day campaign and tonight was a good outing for them,” said Slater. “They’ve come up against a strong NSW side who have been playing good cricket so far this summer.”I suppose some of the English lads have come in to join the one-day squad and they haven’t had a lot of cricket recently. Fortunately for England this is not the competition they’re here for and I’m sure they’ll take a lot out of thegame.”

Southampton offer Mario Lemina to Newcastle

An update has emerged regarding Southampton’s valuation of Newcastle transfer target Mario Lemina.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Saints are interested in signing Isaac Hayden from the Magpies and are now willing to offer Lemina in exchange for the 26-year-old.

The report claims that the Saints are in talks over a possible swap deal with Newcastle, with Hayden valued at £12m and Lemina at £4m, although it remains to be seen whether it would be a straight swap or cash coming Steve Bruce’s way along with the former Juventus man.

Bruce would love it

Newcastle must sanction a deal to sign Lemina from Southampton. Even if a swap deal with Hayden does not materialise, the Magpies should be looking to snap up the Saints enforcer if he is available for £4m as it could be a bargain deal for the Tyneside club.

Lemina is valued at £9m by Transfermarkt and arrived at St Mary’s from Juventus for around £15.5m in the summer of 2017. This suggests that £4m could be a terrific price for the midfielder, who has one year left on his contract on the south coast.

In terms of how he stacks up against Hayden, the Gabon international could be a significant improvement. In 11 starts as a central midfielder for Fulham in the Premier League, Lemina averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.88. Hayden, on the other hand, recorded an average rating of 6.66 in 16 starts in the same position for Bruce’s side, suggesting that Mike Ashley would be improving the squad by swapping the two players.

Garth Crooks once labelled the 27-year-old a midfield “powerhouse” and claimed that he was good enough to play for a Champions League club, citing his experience with Juventus in the Serie A earlier in his career.

The BBC Sport pundit said: “My goodness, this lad looks a powerhouse. I suppose when you’ve played for one of the biggest clubs in the world in Juventus, you should have all the tools to survive in any league.

“The former Juve man was composed on the ball and timely in the tackle – and for a holding midfielder, he was very capable of hurting the opposition. Lemina is a top-four player in my opinion.”

Therefore, Bruce would surely be buzzing if Lemina arrived at St James’ Park. He could be getting a top-class midfielder who is an upgrade on Hayden, whilst potentially getting money to spend because of Lemina’s bargain £4m valuation. If Bruce can get the Gabon midfielder on song and playing at his best, then he could land a real coup this summer judging his performances for Fulham and Crooks’ previous comments about him.

Liverpool fans fume at Neuhaus update

A number of Liverpool fans have been bemoaning the news that Florian Neuhaus could stay at Borussia Monchengladbach for another year.

The Reds could be set for a busy summer, with Ibrahima Konate already joining from RB Leipzig and other incomings now linked.

Not only that, but some players could head the other way, as Jurgen Klopp gets rids of individuals who are deemed surplus to requirements.

Liverpool have been mentioned in connection with a host of players already this summer, but Neuhaus has arguably been one of the most talked-about targets.

The 24-year-old is currently at Euro 2020 with Germany, but it has been hoped that a deal to bring him to Anfield could be agreed after the tournament.

According to Bild journalist Tobi Altschaffl on Twitter, however, Neuhaus will stay put at Monchengladbach ‘for at least another year’.

Windass: Crystal Palace would welcome Joshua King - Exclusive

Crystal Palace would take former Everton attacker Joshua King “all day long”, claims former Premier League striker Dean Windass.

Everton signed King on a short-term deal from Bournemouth at the beginning of February and had an option to extend it.

However, the Merseyside club have opted against doing so and he will now leave Goodison Park at the end of the month.

It leaves the 29-year-old now needing to find a new team, and Windass believes he would be welcomed warmly at a side like Crystal Palace.

Speaking exclusively to TT about the player’s future, the ex-Hull City star said:

“Crystal Palace would take him all day long, but he needs to be playing, he needs to be proving he’s a goalscorer.

“Listen, it’s hard when you’ve done ever so well for Bournemouth and you’re scoring goals, you get a move and you hardly play. And then people think you’re a bad player overnight.

“It doesn’t work like that. You need to be playing week in, week out to be scoring goals.”

Indeed, it was hard for King to get any sort of real rhythm last season at Everton, with the Norway international receiving limited minutes.

In contrast, during his time at Bournemouth, King did play when fit and delivered. While he was not at his best in the Cherries’ last Premier League season, he did manage to score 16 goals in the 2016/17 campaign before hitting double digits again in the 2018/19 campaign.

So, on a free transfer, perhaps it is something worth exploring for Palace’s new manager.

Barisic may have played last Rangers game

Rangers fans will have been keeping a close eye on the England vs Croatia game on Sunday afternoon, not only because both teams are in Scotland’s group, but also because Borna Barisic was set to represent Zlatko Dalic’s side at Wembley.

However, an injury saw him miss out on the squad, one which could prove to be a blow for Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox outfit ahead of next season.

After a superb season for the Gers, which saw the 28-year-old contribute five goals and 14 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, it was no surprise that he earned a call up to the Croatian side ahead of the European Championships this summer.

Barisic is arguably Croatia’s first-choice at left-back but unfortunately, he missed the opening game of the Euros against Gareth Southgate’s side, and they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Dalic confirmed after Barisic missed out on the squad for the game against England that:

“Barisic has had problems with injuries for the last ten days, Gvardiol is now the most prepared.”

He doesn’t allude to how long the defender will be out for, but the last thing Gerrard needs is one of his key players returning injured ahead of next season, which is set to kick off in around six weeks time, with Rangers confirmed to be facing Livingston in the opening game at Ibrox on July 31st.

The fact that he went into the Euros with an issue, and that he has picked up another, suggests that Barisic isn’t 100% fit and firing. Given Croatia’s precarious position in their group, it would not be a shock if the defender pushes to get back for their upcoming game with the Czech Republic and if he goes into that game without having fully recovered, he risks further aggravating his injury.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

The former Osijek man missed the final few games of last season after picking up an injury in the Old Firm derby, which forced Gerrard to deploy Joe Aribo at left-back due to Calvin Bassey also being missing through suspension, and the 40-year-old will surely be desperate to avoid a similar situation as they get their title defence underway next month.

If Barisic’s injury issue does end up costing him time at the start of next season, then he may well have already played his last game for the Gers, when you consider that he has been attracting serious interest from the Premier League in recent weeks, which could well see him depart Ibrox in the current transfer window.

Given his ability as a player, it’s easy to see why Premier League clubs would be keen to sign him and if a big-money offer comes in, it could be tough for Rangers to prevent him from moving on.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

It would be a massive blow for the Gers to lose the “exceptional” defender and their fans will be desperate for him to make a swift recovery with Croatia so he is fit in time for the start of the next campaign, as they’ll be keen to see him in a blue shirt once again.

Ralph Dellor29-Jul-2002England had to work hard – rather harder than might have been expected – to secure their victory, but at half past two on a hot and sultry afternoon, Craig White bowled a ball to Ashish Nehra who pushed forward to give a catch to Graham Thorpe at second slip and England had won by 170 runs. Ajit Agarkar, who had gone into the match with a Test average of 7.81, was left not out on 109 as he and Nehra had forced England to sweat through a record last wicket partnership of 63 before they were separated and celebrations could begin.Unlike their more illustrious colleagues, VVS Laxman and Agarkar provided stubborn resistance to England’s bowlers on the final morning. With England moving in for the kill, the batsmen refused to be flustered as they showed great resolve in face of the inevitable. Both passed fifty and runs flowed as they exploited the vast areas left vacant so that close catchers could be deployed all round the bat.Sixty runs came in the first hour as Nasser Hussain juggled his resources until he found the right answer. For the fourth time in the innings, a bowling change resulted in a wicket in the new bowler’s first over. The pair had added 126 for the seventh wicket and had defied the attack in all its guises for 209 balls when Simon Jones induced Laxman to drive on the off side. The ball flew to point where Michael Vaughan held the catch.Still runs accumulated; still the slips, gullies and short legs were in attendance. The new batsman, Anil Kumble might not have appeared as comfortable as Laxman had, but he survived in company with the admirable Agarkar until giving Matthew Hoggard a simple return catch. Zaheer Khan’s stay was a short one before he edged Craig White to Alec Stewart, but Agarkar and Ashish Nehra at least ensured that the catering staff were required at lunch. They probably had the dishes washed and dried when Nehra brought up the fifty partnership with a disdainfully hooked six off Andrew Flintoff. Then Agarkar reached his hundred by pushing Jones through the covers for two when on 99. His first run was a mixture of single and celebration, while he probably floated back for the second without his feet touching the ground.Of course, it could not last and after the batsmen had enjoyed their fun in delaying England’s inevitable win, White found the ball that brought the entertainment to an end and England head for Trent Bridge leading the series one-nil.

Leeds named as transfer suitors for Okay Yokuslu

Leeds United have emerged as contenders for the signing of former West Brom loanee Okay Yokuslu.

What’s the story?

With the Premier League season now over, all eyes will be on how Marcelo Bielsa looks to strengthen his side ahead of the new campaign, and it appears he’s got another holding midfielder in his sights.

According to Faro de Vigo (via Sport Witness), the Whites have identified Yokuslu as a potential transfer target, with the Turkey international having joined West Brom on loan back in January from La Liga side Celta Vigo.

The report claims that Yokuslu’s performances in England have opened the door to a permanent switch to the Premier League, with only Bielsa’s side being name-checked as being interested thus far.

Another Kalvin Phillips

The 6 foot 3 Yokuslu was a virtual revelation after joining the Baggies earlier in the year, establishing himself as a key part of Sam Allardyce’s side and earning some rave reviews along the way.

His teammate at the Hawthorns, Kyle Bartley, waxed lyrical about the kind of impression the holding midfielder made at the club, saying: “He’s been brilliant. He seems to have settled in really quickly which is always important for a player at a new club. You can see already that he’s a really good player.

“I thought he was great against Manchester United on his full debut and then he backed that up with another impressive performance on Saturday against Burnley. He’s tenacious. He’s good on the ball. He’s calm and composed.”

And, former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson has previously suggested Yokuslu would be a good signing for the Whites, claiming that he has shades of Kalvin Phillips to his game.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “He will be highly sought-after this summer. He plays in a very similar way to Kalvin Phillips and that is the type of player that Leeds need.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/leeds-united-marcelo-bielsa-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-elland-road-rodrigo-de-paul” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

“It is going to be a difficult one to sell though. Would he want to be Kalvin Phillips’ backup? He is playing week in, week out right now. I would like to see him play across the midfield in other positions.”

Given his performances in the Premier League, it’s no surprise that Bielsa is eyeing a move for the midfielder this summer.

Meanwhile, Bielsa is close to clinching his first permanent signing…

SPCL 1 – Guard against complacency is BAT's key

BAT Sports must guard against complacency when they face ECB Southern Electric Premier League strugglers Liphook & Ripsley at Southern Gardens tomorrow, 11am

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)03-Jul-2002BAT Sports must guard against complacency when they face ECB Southern Electric Premier League strugglers Liphook & Ripsley at Southern Gardens tomorrow, 11am.It’s effectively a top versus bottom encounter, with BAT anxious to keep Havant within their sights in the championship race and second-from-bottom Liphook equally eager to pull away from the bottom."It’s paramount we go into the game with the right attitude," says BAT skipper Dave Banks, whose second-placed side have strung together a remarkable sequence of 12 successive all-day `time’ wins."We beat Liphook easily on the opening day of the season, but they won’t want to lose and showed against Portsmouth last week they they don’t buckle easily."In any case, we want to go into next week’s match at Havant – a potential title decider – with 13 straight wins under our belts," he stressed.BAT are without Chris Thomason against Liphook, whereas title rivals Havant could be without key all-rounders Malcolm Hobson and Bevis Moynan for the awkward derby match with Portsmouth at St Helen’s."They ran us very close on the opening day of the season," recalls Havant captain Dominic Carson."To beat Havant would be a real feather in Portsmouth’s cap – and it’s essential we don’t let it happen, particularly at St Helen’s."Third-placed Andover, whose win at Bashley (Rydal) last week rekindled fading title aspirations, entertain South Wilts at London Road. The availability of Jerry Hayward and Mark Miller is in doubt for Andover, but South Wilts, though being without left-arm strike bowler James Tomlinson, have Dorset’s Tim Lamb back to bolster a strong-looking batting line up.Russell Rowe is anxious to bounce back to form after slipping behind BAT’s Damian Shirazi in the Premier League run scoring charts.Rowe, who has been out of nick recently, has scored 352 runs, compared with Shirazi’s 399 haul for BAT, the defending champions. The back problem that affected Matt Swarbrick during Dorset’s recent Minor Counties Championship defeat by Cornwall could rule the Bournemouth skipper out of the ECB Premier Division match with lowly Burridge at Chapel Gate, 11am."I was in a tremendous amount of pain last weekend and batted down the order in our second innings," Swarbrick explained. "I really do not know whether my back will stand up to 120-odd overs tomorrow."If Swarbrick does miss the game, then Martin Miller will skipper the side, with either Andy Bell or Morgan Parkin promoted from Bournemouth promotion chasing Hampshire League side.Tom Webley is set to return from Somerset commitments against a Burridge side that lies bottom of the table, after just win (against Portsmouth) in six matches.Weakened Burridge, without influential opening batsman Neil Cunningham (injured ankle), could be pressed to provide fourth-placed Bournemouth with their first `time’ game win this season.Chris Sketchley and Andy Neal return to a full strength Bashley (Rydal) side against off-colour Calmore Sports at the Bashley Cricket Ground, 11am. The two teams occupy seventh and eighth spots in the Premier 1 table, respectively, and are both in need of a win.Richard Knowles, who hit an unbeaten century in last week’s defeat by Andover, will be expected to continue his good form. But both Neil Thurgood and Luke Ronchi are due a big score.

Everton linked with Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Everton have been linked with a move for Ruben Loftus-Cheek recently, and if he were to join the Toffees this summer, it could be bad news for Tom Davies’ future at Goodison Park.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton are interested in signing the Chelsea midfielder this summer despite the recent exit of Carlo Ancelotti, with Aston Villa and Southampton also said to be keen on the Englishman.

The Stamford Bridge outfit are reportedly planning a max exodus this summer despite their recent Champions League final win, which could see Loftus-Cheek finally depart on a permanent deal after a number of loan spells.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan with Fulham but was unable to save Scott Parker’s side from relegation, making 30 appearances in the Premier League, in which he managed just one goal and no assists, averaging a modest 6.50 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

During his time at Chelsea, the midfielder – who once earned comparisons with Michael Ballack – has made just 82 senior appearances, contributing 12 goals and 11 assists.

However, it seems clear now that he won’t make it as a regular with the west London side, and he arguably needs a permanent transfer away so he can settle at another club and start to realise his potential.

If he were to join Everton and rediscover the form which led Parker to label him “exceptional” in last season’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool, then he could prove to be a solid addition at Goodison Park this summer.

Although the identity of the next Everton manager is currently unknown, if sporting director Marcel Brands were to shell out close to Loftus-Cheek’s current £18m market value in order to sign him this summer, it seems likely that he would be challenging for a regular first team spot in the team next season.

This could be bad news for Davies, who despite being handed numerous opportunities by Ancelotti last season managed just one assist and no goals in 25 Premier League appearances, averaging a less than impressive 6.46 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Therefore, with Southampton having been linked with a move for Davies recently, Loftus-Cheek’s potential arrival could well be the catalyst for the 22-year-old departing Goodison Park for good this summer.
