Big-hitting Paul Winslow dies aged 82

Paul Winslow, who played five Test for South Africa as a middle-order batsman in the decade after the war, has died at his home in Johannesburg

Peter Martin29-May-2011Paul Winslow, who played five Tests for South Africa as a middle-order batsman in the decade after the war, has died at Rosebank Netcare Clinic, Rosebank, Johannesburg. He had turned 82 earlier in the week.Winslow gained the reputation of a big hitter and throughout his career attacked the bowling, in contrast to most of the batsmen of his era.His most memorable innings came in the third Test at Old Trafford in 1955. South Africa went into the match trailing 2-0, and in reply to England’s 284, were 245 for 5 when Winslow joined wicketkeeper John Waite. The pair added 171 for the sixth wicket, Waite scoring 113 and Winslow 108. Winslow brought up his maiden first-class hundred with a towering straight six off Tony Lock which sailed out of the ground.Set 145 at a little over a run-a-minute, South Africa scrambled home by three wickets with minutes to spare, Winslow making a rapid 16.Winslow failed in the fourth Test – also won by South Africa – and thereafter did nothing of note in his career except for scoring 81 and 139 for Rhodesia against the touring Australian team of 1957-58 in Salisbury. There was talk of him being recalled for the Test series, but this did not happen. He did, however, play for a South African XI in a match at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria, scoring 12 and 22.Winslow was educated at King Edward VII and represented the SA Nuffield XI in 1947 and 1948 before playing for Sussex second XI in 1949. He played in one first-class match for Sussex against Cambridge University two weeks before his 20th birthday. Returning to South Africa, he played for Transvaal in two matches against Lindsay Hassett’s 1949-50 touring Australian team, making his Test debut in the fourth match of the series at Ellis Park, with little success. In 1954-55 he had a successful season for Transvaal, scoring 379 runs (42.11) with a highest of 94 and was recalled for the tour of England. In 22 matches on tour he scored 758 runs at an average of 23.68, 156 of the runs in the three Tests he played (26.00). Against Lancashire he smashed 61 in only 43 minutes, smiting spinner Jack Ikin for 30 (4,4,6,6,4,6) off an over.He retired at the end of the 1959-60 at the age of 30 to concentrate on his business career, having scored 2,755 runs in 75 matches (ave 23.34) with two centuries and 13 fifties. He is survived by his wife, Moira, who he met on the 1955 tour. She was the co-ordinator of Drive Alive after the death of four family members in 1989.

Ponting to miss first ODI against Sri Lanka

Ricky Ponting will miss Australia’s first one-day international against Sri Lanka in Melbourne on Wednesday after the death of his grandmother in Tasmania

Brydon Coverdale02-Nov-2010Ricky Ponting will miss Australia’s first one-day international against Sri Lanka in Melbourne on Wednesday after the death of his grandmother in Tasmania. Michael Clarke will captain the side in the first of this week’s three ODIs but Ponting will be available for the second match at the SCG on Friday.”I won’t be playing tomorrow’s game,” Ponting said at the MCG on Tuesday. “My grandmother down in Launceston has passed away on the weekend. The funeral is down in Launceston tomorrow. I’ll be flying out tomorrow morning to attend the funeral and then flying straight back to the ground tomorrow afternoon.”Ponting sat out of Australia’s recent one-dayers in India and has not played an ODI since the series against England finished in July. Last time Clarke captained Australia in a home ODI, he made 98 opening the batting in a loss to New Zealand at the MCG.The Australians have not confirmed a starting line-up for the first ODI after their training session on Tuesday was interrupted by rain. However, the Tasmanian spinner Xavier Doherty is set to make his international debut, a week after taking a five-wicket haul in the Sheffield Shield on the same ground.”There’s no doubt that he’s been probably the best-performed spinner in Australia in the shorter forms of the game for the last few years now,” Ponting said of his state team-mate Doherty. “He’s become a match-winner for Tassie in that period of time. He’s someone that I do know quite well.”He’s a boy from Launceston, the same as me, and it’s great reward for someone like him having put in the hard yards for a long time, to finally get an opportunity to play. With Hauritz being away and having played that Shield game, Hauritz won’t play the game tomorrow, so Doherty will play if the weather is not too inclement for the spinners.”Australia have regained several first-choice players including Mitchell Johnson and Michael Hussey, who sat out of Sunday’s Twenty20 loss at the WACA. The hosts are aiming to turn around their losing streak across all formats, having not won an international match since the Lord’s Test against Pakistan in July.

Leeds close in on Aaronson agreement

Leeds United have finally got their man, although there’s a catch…

What’s the word?

According to TEAMtalk, the Yorkshire outfit are confident in tying up a deal for no.1 target Brenden Aaronson ahead of the January transfer window deadline on Monday.

Director of football Victor Orta has been in Europe for talks with RB Salzburg over a potential deal this week.

However, the Whites have accepted the fact that they may have to wait until the summer to actually get him to Elland Road with the Austria Bundesliga champions keen to keep hold of him ahead of their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

A deal could be agreed now ahead of the summer window.

A double-edged sword

So whilst it seems as if manager Marcelo Bielsa isn’t going to get the midfield reinforcement he desperately needs right now, it does appear as if he’ll land his main target after all.

Leeds were left frustrated in their attempts to sign him, having seen two bids of £15m and £20m swiftly knocked back. Both of those fees would have seen Salzburg earn their third most expensive sale ever, so that goes to show how much they value him right now.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Aaronson is a hugely exciting and versatile attacking midfielder capable of providing goals and assists in the final third.

Indeed, the 21-year-old dynamo has delivered three goals and seven assists across all competitions this season, including vital goals in the Champions League, beating Brondby to make the group stages, where they have since advanced from.

Capped 15 times by the USMNT, Aaronson could be one of the brightest talents to emerge from the other side of the pond since Christian Pulisic.

He has been nicknamed the ‘Medford Messi’, compared to American great Clint Dempsey and been described as “silky” on the ball by ex-MLS star DeMarcus Beasley.

His performances on Europe’s biggest stage have been rather impressive as he ranks amongst the top 1% of midfielders for pressures in the final third (27.84 per 90), which results in a forced turnover of possession 8.55 times per 90, as per FBRef.

That sort of work rate and hunger is right up Bielsa’s street, so it’s no wonder the Argentine has been so keen to sign the £10.8m-rated gem this month.

As his side now close in on a deal, the Leeds boss must be absolutely buzzing to have finally got his man, albeit he’ll have to wait until the summer, if he sticks around.

Tottenham: Source shares big Palhinha news

Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias has now shared a major update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Sporting Lisbon star Joao Palhinha.

The Lowdown: Tottenham in mix?

The Lilywhites have been linked with a move for the Sporting midfield powerhouse since as far back as last summer with former boss Nuno Espirito Santo allegedly green-lighting a move in 2021.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Since then, reports have suggested that Tottenham remain very interested long into the Antonio Conte era, coming as the Italian eyes a plethora of new additions over a major summer rebuild.

Palhinha is also attracting Premier League interest from the likes of Manchester United and Wolves, but according to a new report, it’s Spurs who are signalling the most intent.

The Latest: Spurs set for bid…

According to Jornal de Notícias, via Sport Witness, Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici will make a bid for Palhinha ‘within the month’.

The newspaper adds that Conte personally sees Sporting’s star as the ‘ideal element’ to upgrade his Lilywhites midfield.

The Verdict: Perfect man?

Tottenham’s head coach is apparently keen to add two new midfield signings in the next transfer window and we believe Palhinha would be a more-than capable fresh face.

The 6 foot 3 midfield mountain, called a ‘sensational player’ by Islington Gazette reporter Josh Bunting, has also averaged more tackles per 90 in Portugal’s top flight than any Spurs man has in England (WhoScored).

Going by his numbers, Palhinha could add even more steel to the Spurs midfield alongside the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp (when fit) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

As the summer fast approaches, we believe the Lilywhites should make an attempt at the very least.

West Ham must finally sign Nikola Milenkovic

West Ham must finally go ahead and sign Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic amid a recent transfer update…

What’s the story?

The Hammers were linked with a swoop for the Serbia international back in the summer, and now, journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed David Moyes’ side could revisit a move for the centre-back in this month’s January transfer window.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “The one that probably stands out for me is Milenkovic at Fiorentina. They tried to get him in the summer before the deal fell through.

“I think it fell through because of his agents demands, so that could possibly be revisited. He’s definitely been a long-term target for West Ham.”

Huge upgrade on Issa Diop

With Angelo Ogbonna ruled out with an ACL injury, Moyes has had to shuffle his back-line this season in the Premier League, and against Crystal Palace last time out, turned to Issa Diop.

The Frenchman however put in a dismal showing, with Football.London giving him a measly five in their post-match player ratings and even declaring that “his place could come under pressure if the Hammers bring in another defender during the transfer window”.

And if that’s the case, then Milenkovic surely has to be that man.

The Serbian is an absolute powerhouse in the centre of defence, averaging 1.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions in Serie A last season – both stats in the top five among Fiorentina’s entire squad.

The £20.7m-rated titan has already earned rave reviews for his abilities and potential, being described as someone who is “fearless” and is a “beast”.

Mozzart journalist Dejan Stankovic revealed that the defender could well be the next Nemanja Vidic, saying: “Milenkovic is better than Vidic with the ball at his feet, and he is much calmer on the field. He is the most talented centre-back Serbia have had since Vidic, and they definitely have one thing in common – both are fearless.”

Milenkovic has shown he could also develop into the leader Ogbonna is right now, having captained Fiorentina on a couple of occasions already last season, despite only being 23.

Standing at 6 foot 5, Milenkovic is a towering presence in the Viola’s backline; indeed, his height makes him taller than Diop by an inch.

With Diop looking shaky and unconvincing as a long-term answer, the Fiorentina man could be the perfect upgrade for the Hammers this month.

Meanwhile, West Ham are also interested in another Premier League star…

West Ham: Insider makes ‘£150m’ claim

West Ham United boss David Moyes could now be set for real backing this summer as a club insider shares some ‘£150 million’ news out of Rush Green.

The Lowdown: Moyes eyeing fresh faces…

Reliable reports indicate that Moyes and the Hammers are eyeing a real summer overhaul amid their chase for Champions League qualification and chase for unprecedented Europa League silverware.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Times claim that West Ham’s boss could want as many as four major signings in the next window, including a possible goalkeeper, left-sided centre-half, central midfield player and, of course, a striker.

His transfer kitty to acquire this many fresh faces will be a crucial determining factor as Moyes aims to build upon another impressive campaign over-all.

Club insider Claret & Hugh, sharing an update on star man Declan Rice’s future, have also dropped news in their piece on just how much Moyes will be allocated to spend.

The Latest: C&H make big-money claim…

The Irons source, making a claim in the last line of their article, say that West Ham and Moyes will be backed with a ‘£150m’ kitty.

They also state that the club are ‘set to spend in the summer’ as this potentially exciting update emerges ahead of what could be a very interesting summer window.

The Verdict: Promising…

The lack of finalised moves in January could be made up for in the summer going by this news.

West Ham are certainly short in a number of positions, namely centre-back amid their current injury crisis, while striker Michail Antonio is still their only recognised option up front.

If the Irons are to maintain their place among the Premier League’s best, they will need sufficient backing, and it will certainly be intriguing to see if GSB do indeed grant Moyes the signings he requires with this big £150m kitty.

Holder, Searles star in easy win for Barbados

A stirring lower-order counterattack led by Alcindo Holder lifted Barbados to a challenging score of 159 and killed the fight in Windward Islands, who crashed to their second successive defeat in the Caribbean T20

Barbados went the other way, charting their second win in as many games to enter the semi-finals.Windwards made a promising start to their chase with Johnson Charles crashing Kemar Roach for a six and a four in his opening over, but things unraveled quickly thereafter. Devon Smith cut Ryan Hinds straight to Dwayne Smith in the third over, and Charles, possibly disturbed by constant chatter from Sulieman Benn, was run-out attempting a tight single to cover.Andre Fletcher continued to attack with his trademark whips to cow corner, picking 20 runs off six balls he faced either side of Charles’ dismissal. Offspinner Ashley Nurse then wrested back the initiative, pinning Fletcher in front of the stumps for 33 off 17 balls and castling Liam Sebastien with a full delivery.Darren Sammy tried to stay in the game with some risk-free cricket but once he perished, pulling the impressive debutant Javon Searles to square-leg, the asking rate began to go out of control. Searles continued to keep things tight, but the match as a contest fizzled out long before he picked the last of his four wickets. It was not always so easy for Barbados whose innings seemed to have stalled on the starting line after they were asked to bat first. Jason Hinds, opening in his Twenty20 debut, was scratchy against the Windwards seamers and it was left to Dale Richards to generate the early push. He targeted left-arm spinner Gary Mathurin whose tight lines were interspersed with boundary balls. Craig Emmanuel who came on in the fifth over hit impressive lines and began with a maiden as Jason struggled to get bat on ball. In his second over, Emmanuel struck with his nagging length, getting Richards to miscue a pull to third man.Spinners Sebastien and Rawl Lewis maintained pressure following the Powerplay period before Jason’s listless innings ended in a mix-up in the eleventh over amidst cheers from his home crowd. Jonathan Carter dispatched Lewis for two sixes towards midwicket to reignite the innings, but fell attempting another heave off Shane Shillingford. In the meantime, Ryan Hinds lofted Nelon Pascal to long on and the innings seemed to be falling apart, but Alcindo Holder and Dwayne Smith had other plans.Holder was reprieved early, eluding the grasp of a diving attempt in the outfield with a lofted cover drive. Smith served notice with two lusty swings off Shillingford over midwicket before Holder trained his guns on Pascal’s hittable lengths. He smashed the first ball of the 17th over past long on for six, before pulling over midwicket, edging past the wicketkeeper and lofting over extra-cover as 19 runs were looted off the over. Butler was re-introduced to exert control, but he too was punished as Holder pinged long-on for six and point for four.Emmanuel got the better of Dwayne despite conceding a six over fine leg, and finished off with the wicket of Carlo Morris caught smartly by Sebastien at long on. Holder stayed put till the end and hustled Lewis for another six over long on as Barbados plundered 104 runs off their last ten overs. They had been helped along by some poor fielding under pressure, and muddled thinking from Windwards, who failed to make full use of Emmanuel, their best bowler on the day. As it transpired, their batting effort was even worse, and the 39-run margin of defeat summarised the rift between the two sides perfectly.

Nelson Odhiambo included for ODI series

Insider makes Hause to West Ham claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones of Eurosport has dropped an encouraging update on West Ham United’s links to Aston Villa defender Kortney Hause.

The Lowdown: West Ham talks held…

According to Football Insider, sharing news in the past week, there has been a development in manager David Moyes’ hunt for a centre-half as the Irons and transfer chief Rob Newman target Villa’s defender.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As per their information, preliminary talks have been held over signing the 6 foot 3 powerhouse before January 31 with a reunion in east London now ‘on the cards’ if both the Villans and West Ham can reach an agreement.

In another update, FI state that Hause himself is ‘keen’ to link up with Moyes at the London Stadium with insider Jones now sharing what he knows on the situation.

The Latest: Insider makes encouraging claim…

According to Eurosport’s reporter, in an interview with GMS, a West Ham move to sign the 26-year-old is ‘definitely possible’ as he backs that the club hold an interest.

“It’s definitely possible,” he explained.

“It’s one that West Ham are looking at, I think in the last week it’s one that’s become clearer.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

The towering homegrown defender is also able to fill various roles across the backline, including at left-back (WhoScored), potentially strengthening Moyes’ options in an array of positions.

Still fairly young, Hause may also be an astute option to have at West Ham for years to come and it’s little wonder both Newman and the club are apparently weighing up a bid.

Valued at around £4.5 million by Transfermarkt, the left-footed ace has proven dependable and reliable when slotting in as a back up option for Villa this season – winning the second-most aerial duels per 90 on average out of their squad (WhoScored).

He’s also received praised for his cameos in the Premier League over 2021/2022 with Villa journalist Ashley Preece calling Hause ‘incredible’ (Claret & Blue podcast via This is Futbol).

We believe he could certainly come as a shrewd option for Moyes this transfer window.
